Robert A. Winter
OLNEY, Md. - Robert A. Winter, 59, of Olney, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney.
Born Oct. 4, 1938, in Hanover, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles and Emma Crouse Winter.
He was a 1956 graduate of Eichelberger High School in Hanover; and a 1960 graduate of Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va.
He served with the U.S. Army Reserves from 1960-1966.
He was a manger in the Data Center at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.
He was a member of Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church in Olney, sang on the church choir and with Oakdale Boys, among others.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jones Winter, formerly of Hagerstown; one daughter, Margaret Lyon of Frederick, Md.; a son, Andrew Winter of Chandler, Ariz.; one brother, Charles G. Winter of Little Rock, Ark.; two grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, June 18, at Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church. Burial was in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Mary E. Koons
Mary Elizabeth Koons, 87, of 214 Hager St., died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at Coffman Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 22, 1910, in Washington County, near State Line, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Clyde Newman and Mary Catherine "Mollie" Zimmerman Koons.
She retired from the pharmacy department of Washington County Hospital in 1972, after 25 years.
She was a member of Grace Bible Church near Greencastle, Pa.
She is survived by four sisters, Edna Koons, Jane Koons, Cora Koons and Martha Martin, all of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin Z. Koons.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m., at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. J. Herman Fisler will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Joseph S. Shuman
THURMONT, Md. - Joseph Small Shuman, 81, of 4 Goodwill Circle, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born Oct. 17, 1916, in Mont Alto, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert Pattison and Lizzie Burnside Small Shuman.
He was employed vy Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. of Maryland, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of Thurmont United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America; and was past master of Acacia Lodge 155 of Thurmont, AF & AM.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Mae Carbaugh Shuman; one daughter, Nancy Jo Shuman of Thurmont; one son, Robert E. Shuman of New Orleans; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. Matthew Poole will officiate.
There will be no viewing.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

John J. Fullen
FAIRFAX, Va. - John J. "Jack" Fullen, 86, of 9451 Lee Highway, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at his home.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Ghiold Fullen, in 1994.
He was the manager of reporters at Dun and Bradstreet, retiring in 1978. He also worked as a recruiter at St. John's University, retiring in 1990.
He attended St. Teresa's Church.
He was a member of First Friday Club.
He is survived by a son, the Rev. Jack Fullen of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Hagerstown; a brother, James Fullen of Cranbury, N.J.; and three grandchildren, Pamela Morrison, Jason Fullen and Michael Fullen.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, July 1, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Homer L. Brooks
Homer L. Brooks, 69, of East Franklin Street, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
He was born May 18, 1929, in Nashville, Tenn.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Rose L. Turner Brooks; two sons, Chat Hughes of Harrisburg, Pa., and Eddie Brooks of Baltimore; a stepdaughter, Edna L. Bigler of Hagerstown; and two stepgrandchildren.
There will be no service or burial.
Harry R. Hesson Jr.
WINTER PARK, Fla. - Harry R. Hesson Jr., 68, of Winter Park, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at his home.
Born in Washington County, he was the son of the late Harry R. and Thelma M. Knepper Hesson Sr.
Before retiring, he owned and operated The Pine Room in Hagerstown, and Penny Pinchers Bar in Winter Park.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.
He was a member of Hagerstown Masonic Lodge 217 AF&AM; Winter Park Masonic Lodge 239 AF&AM; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Scottish Rite of Cumberland, Md.; American Legion Post 242 Winter Park; LOOM 766 of Orlando, Fla.; and Western Maryland Sportsman Club at Dam 4.
He is survived by his wife, Mary M. Cline Hesson; three daughters, Debra D. Hesson of Norfolk, Va., Cathy L. Hesson of Wilmington, N.C., and Erin G. Woolshleger of Baltimore; two stepsons, Raymond Potts and Gregory Potts, both of Hanover, Pa.; four sisters, Joan Lizer of Tampa, Fla., Mary Ann Kriner of Hagerstown, Nickie Sue Myers of Clear Spring and Patty Binkley of Mercersburg, Pa.; a brother, Michael Hesson of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Burial will be in Leitersburg Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., where a Masonic memorial service will begin at 7 p.m.
Emma G. Thomas
BOONSBORO - Emma Gold Thomas, 83, of Boonsboro, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born Jan. 29, 1915, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Menefee and Jessie Dixon Stoner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brayden W. Thomas, in 1987.
She was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Boonsboro, where she was a member of Adult Sunday School Class. She also had served on the Cemetery Board.
She is survived by two sons, Stanley W. Thomas of Boonsboro and B. Randall Thomas of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and a sister, Katherine Stoner Miller of Waynesboro, Pa.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald D. Thomas; and a sister, Helen Stoner Olsen.
Private graveside services were held in Boonsboro Cemetery. The Rev. Kenneth L. Harrington officiated.

Martha M. Mellott
BIG POOL - Martha May Mellott, 96, of 10891 Big Pool Road, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 6, 1901, in Big Spring, she was the daughter of the late Richard Lewis and Sarah Katherine Rockwell Moyser.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Philbert Charles Mellott, in 1965.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Big Pool.
She is survived by a daughter, Hilda Hart of Clear Spring; three sons, P. Leroy Mellott and Charles L. Mellott, both of Big Pool, and Clarence D. Mellott of Clear Spring; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sarah Hart and Ruth Bowers; a sister; five brothers; and a granddaughter.
Graveside services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Cemetery in Clear Spring. The Rev. Dennis Whitmore will officiate. A memorial service will follow the burial at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Big Pool.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring.

Lucille I. Henson
Lucille Irene Henson, 73, of 1632 Howell Road, Hagerstown, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at Ravenwood Nursing Home.
Born June 11, 1925, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late George and Maude Alsip Pitsnogle.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She was employed with AMVETS Post 10, L'Aiglon, Dorbee Manufacturing and E.J. Fennel Co.
She is survived by a sister, Norma C. Nussear of Hagerstown; three nephews; and grand-nieces and nephews.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Elza Hurst will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
