Marion T. Hoffman Sr.

FREDERICK, Md. - Marion Thomas Hoffman Sr., 76, of 3628 Basford Road, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 20, 1921, in Doubs, Md., he was the son of the late George William Hoffman Sr. and Ethel W. Thomas Hoffman.

He was a 1940 graduate of Frederick High School.

He was employed for 35 years with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources as a roadside tree supervisor.

He also worked part time at Jug Bridge Seafood, Frederick. Since 1985 he had worked part time at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home in Middletown, Md.

He was a life member of Doub Epworth United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Fervency Lodge 200 AF & AM, where he was a past master; Scottish Rite 18 Degree Valley of Maryland; 32nd degree of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He also was a charter and life member of Carroll Manor Volunteer Fire Co. and a member of the Frederick County Game and Protective Association. He was a Food Bank volunteer.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Stone Hoffman; a daughter, Sarah Jane Hoffman of Myersville, Md.; three sisters, Anna Mary Shankle of Frederick, Ruby Brashears of Adamstown, Md., and Helen Plunkard of Mount Airy, Md.; two brothers, George William Hoffman of Frederick and the Rev. John O. Hoffman of Huntington, Md.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, M. Thomas Hoffman Jr., on Jan. 16, 1998; and two sisters, Harriett Gibbons and Jane Phillips.

There will be a private family service. The Rev. Loretta Whitney Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

Friends may call at any time Sunday at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Doub Epworth United Methodist Church, Doubs, Md. 21710; Carroll Manor Volunteer Fire Co., Doubs, Md. 21710; or Jefferson Volunteer Fire Co., Jefferson, Md. 21755.

Julia M. Poole

CLEAR SPRING - Julia Matilda "Bunnie" Poole, 87, of Clear Spring, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at her daughter's home in Hagerstown.

Born July 3, 1910, in Blairs Valley, Md., she was the daughter of the late George David and Julia Matilda Suffecool Clopper.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Poole.

She attended Blairs Valley School.

She worked for many years as caretaker and cook for Johns Hopkins University's Camp Singawall in Clear Spring. She had been a homemaker in recent years.

She was a member of Indian Springs Church of God, Clear Spring.

She is survived by two daughters, Colleen Haupt of Boonsboro and Verda Phetteplace of Hagerstown; a son, Theodore Poole of Clear Spring; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four children, Phillip Poole, Robert Poole, Joan Poole and Belvia Poole; a sister, the Rev. Jessie Dent; a brother, Lawrence Clopper; her stepmother, Lottie V. Clopper; and two stepbrothers, Frank Clopper and Millard Clopper.

Graveside services will be Monday at 9 a.m. at Blairs Valley Church of God Cemetery. Elder Donald Mullen will officiate. Relatives and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery at 8:45 a.m. Monday.

Memorial donations may be made to Indian Springs Church of God, 12225 Funkhouser Road, Clear Spring, Md. 21722; or Mount Lena United Methodist Church, 21234 Mount Lena Road, Boonsboro, Md. 21713.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Catherine M. Martin

WILLIAMSPORT - Catherine Margaret Martin, 85, of Homewood Retirement Center, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Homewood Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 26, 1912, in Wolfsville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Alvey P. and Minnie Hooper Harshman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Martin, in 1958.

She retired in 1973 from L'Aiglon Apparel after 16 years of service.

She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and Grace and Grit Sunday School Class of Hagerstown.

She is survived by a niece, Betty Jane Wiles of Frederick, Md.; and a nephew, Harold L. Harshman of Frederick.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John W. Harshman.

There will be no viewing. Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church, 108 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Dorothy H. Poist

PARKVILLE, Md. - Dorothy H. Hopkins Poist, 83, of 8820 Walther Blvd., died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at her home.

Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late William A. Hopkins Sr. and Susan L. Baker Hopkins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert L. Poist.

She graduated from Hagerstown High School and received a two-year degree from Temple University, Philadelphia.

She was the office manager at North Point Automotive, a business owned by her son, David. During World War II, she was secretary to the vice president at Glen L. Martins in Baltimore.

She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Killmer of Highland, Ind., and Joanne Brown of McKinney, Texas; a son, David A. Poist of Timonium, Md.; two brothers, John "Pete" H. Hopkins and William A. Hopkins Jr.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Young.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Havenwood Presbyterian Church, Lutherville, Md. The Rev. J. Mark Killmer will officiate. Burial will be in Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Timonium.

Phillip S. Shatzer

Phillip S. Shatzer, 76, of 15 Bethlehem Court, Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Sept. 7, 1921, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Phillip S. and Mary E. Weaver Shatzer Sr.

He retired from Miller Furniture Co. in Hagerstown.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in Africa and Europe. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He is survived by a sister, Bertha C. Bryan of Hagerstown; a brother, Lewis A. Shatzer of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Perrott; and four brothers, John Shatzer, Charles Shatzer, Samuel Shatzer and Paul Shatzer.

Services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Franklin E. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Maurice C. Landers

HANCOCK - Maurice Clifford Landers, 79, of Virginia Ave., died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

Born Sept. 26, 1918, in Hancock, he was the son of the late Clifford Benjamin and Molly Elizabeth Reel Landers.

His first wife, Helen Lee Hovermale, died in 1973.

He was a 1936 graduate of Hancock High School.

He retired in 1989 as an agent for State Farm Insurance in the Hancock area after 38 years of service.

From 1943 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Asiatic Pacific Area as a radar power attendant, power supply mechanic and truck driver, leaving with the rank of corporal.

He served as mayor of Hancock for two terms, and was instrumental in bringing Rayloc and Prowler to Hancock.

He was commercial credit manager for People's and Hancock banks.

He was a member of Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church.

He was a life member and past commander of Webster B. Harrison Post 26 American Legion, life member of Hancock VFW Post 10502 and was a member of Hancock Volunteer Fire Co.

He is survived by his second wife, Virgie E. Miller Landers, whom he married Sept. 30, 1973; a daughter, Linda Ann Haupt of Hagerstown; a son, Donald Benny Landers of Hancock; a stepdaughter, Ellen Diane Golden of Hagerstown; two stepsons, David Joseph Diehl of Hancock and William Lee Rankin of Hagerstown; a sister, Catherine M. Mazingo of Hancock; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Pearl Caddie, Louise Hoffman, Esther Mitchell and Leola Landers; a brother, William Landers; and a grandson.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Phillip Unger will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, with military graveside services by Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday; and at the church an hour prior to services on Wednesday. The funeral home will be open from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to United Cerebral Palsy, 600 Salem Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or to Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 327, Hancock, Md. 21750.

Julia E. Shockey

WILLIAMSPORT - Julia Elizabeth Shockey, 93, formerly of West Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 7, 1904, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Tryon and Annie Rice Bragunier.

She retired in 1966 from the U.S. Navy in Panama.

She was a Protestant.

She was a member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and AARP.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Louise Easterday and Catherine Lynn, both of Hagerstown; a brother, Millard Bragunier of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Margaret Bragunier, Phyllis Bragunier, Frances Fangmyer, Daisy Fahrney and Florence Castle; and two brothers, James Bragunier and Thomas Bragunier.

Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
