June 3, 2000

Bertha Elizabeth Sparks of Sudlersville, Maryland died Saturday, June 3, 2000 at Talbot Hospice in Easton after a long courageous battle with cancer which she fought with great dignity and grace. She was 80.

Born in Queen Anne’s County, Bertha Elizabeth Sparks was the daughter of the late Joseph B. Taylor and Sarah Rebecca Taylor. Mrs. Sparks worked in the Sudlersville Elementary School Cafeteria for 27 years before retirement. Mrs. Sparks was a member of the Double Creek Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Top of the Hill Club in Sudlersville and the Modern Maturity out of Dover, Delaware. She enjoyed gardening, spending time in the kitchen baking and loved spending time with her family.

Mrs. Sparks was preceded in death by 1 daughter Janice Ransom and 1 brother Joseph B. Taylor.

Mrs. Sparks is survived by 2 sons, David Wayne Sparks of Arkansas and Donald Keith Sparks of Crumpton, Maryland, 2 daughters, Patricia Anne Klaus of Florida and Diane Russell of Texas, 2 sisters, Ruth Clough of Price, Maryland and Ethel Mae VonKleek of Bethany Beach, Delaware, 6 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held June 6, 2000 at 2:00 pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md 21651.

Interment will follow at the Crumpton Cemetery, in Crumpton, Md.

In Lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Talbot Hospice Foundation 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, Md 21601.

June 2, 2000

Pamela Felton Miller of Rock Hall, MD died on Friday, June 2, 2000 at Christiana Hospital, New Castle, DE. She was 56 years old.

She was the daughter of the late Francis Joseph & Violet Bradley Felton.

After graduating from high school she received her bachelors degree in arts and a master degree of education from Cornell University in Ithica, New York. Mrs. Miller married Richard Miller in August 1967. They made their home in Ithica, then they moved to Rockville, MD where she worked as an Elementary Ed. Teacher for the Prince Georges County School system. They also resided in Crofton for 12 years and Crownsville for 10 years before she retired in 1998 and moved to Rock Hall, MD.

Mrs. Miller was a member of several professional/teaching organizations. Member of the Great Oak Landing Yacht Club. She also was a New York State, Jr. Champion of Skeet Shooting.

In addition to her husband she is survived by 2 sons: Brett Charles Miller of Baltimore, MD and Christopher Francis Miller of Ellicott City, MD and on Sister –in-law Karen Leavy of East Amherst, NY.

Memorial services will be private.

June 1, 2000

Vernon H. Diers of Chestertown, Md. died on June 1, 2000 at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 86.

He was born in Oregon on October 7, 1913, the son of the late Henry and Carrie Hinze Diers. Mr. Diers enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force where he served during WW II in the European Theatre. Mr. Diers then attended Rutgers University and Capital Radio Engineering College in Washington, D.C.

He married Catherine Dunn in 1948; they lived in Washington D.C. then Seattle, Washington, and later New Jersey. Mr. Diers worked with Westinghouse and Philco for the majority of his working career as a quality control engineer. He retired around 1980, and moved to Chestertown, Md. He worked in Chestertown in the same capacity for several more years before fully retiring. He enjoyed walking and conversation.

He is survived by his wife Catherine Diers of Chestertown, Md., a sister: Esther Smith of Seattle, Washington, along with many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday June 4, 2000 at 10:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. 21620. Interment will be in Old Bohemia Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the charity of your choice.

John George Leiss of Cordova died on Thursday, June 1, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital in Easton. He was 87.

Born in Bloomfield, NJ on January 27, 1913, he was the son of the late George and Bertha Hochstool Leiss. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45. In 1951, he married the former Helen "June" Christman and they made their home in Connecticut where he worked as a salesman for International Harvester for twenty years. In 1976, he moved to the Eastern Shore where he worked for the Caroline Center until retiring in 1983.

Mr. Leiss was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hillsboro and an active volunteer at the Memorial Hospital in Easton.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Pamela Helmer of Cordova; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hillsboro on at . Burial was private at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Beulah.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box , Hillsboro, MD 21641.

July 30, 2000

Doris Warner Raughley of Easton died at her home on Sunday, July 30, 2000. She was 82.

Born in Bridgeville, DE on March 14, 1918, she was the daughter of the late J. Walter and Addie Sheets Warner. After graduating from Milford High School in 1935, she attended Marinello School of Cosmeticians in Philadelphia. Before moving to Easton in 1943, she owned and operated a beauty shop in Milford. Her husband, James J. Raughley, whom she married in 1938, died in October 1980. She was a member of the Royal Oak Community United Methodist Church in Royal Oak where she was a member of the Methodist Women. She was also a former member of the Ladies of the Elks, Lodge #1622, Easton.

Mrs. Raughley is survived by two sons, J. Brent Raughley and Richard D. Raughley, both of Easton; four grandchildren, Lisa Raughley of Richmond, VA, Kim Morgan of Trappe, Josh Raughley, and Blair Raughley, both of Easton; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Kristin Morgan. Five sisters, Blanch Eisenbrey, Maude Hall, Hazel Waldron, Stella Willis, and Ethel Burns, and five brothers, Gordon Warner, Harvey Warner, Floyd Warner, Howard Warner, and Wilbur "Bill" Warner, are deceased.

Funeral services will be held at the Royal Oak Community United Methodist Church in Royal Oak on Thursday, August 3, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Wednesday evening from 7-9 PM. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Royal Oak Community United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 126, Royal Oak, MD 21662.

July 27, 2000

Leslie M. Dulin of Galena, MD formally of Kennedyville, MD died on Thursday, July 27th, 2000 in the Magnolia Hall Nursing Center, Chestertown, MD. He was 80 years old.

Mr. Dulin was born in Wye Mills, MD the son of the late John P. Dulin, Jr. and Alma B. Welch Dulin. Mr. Dulin attended school in Cordova, MD. He worked as a farmer and truck driver for 29 years. Mr. Dulin was the farm manager at Solitude Farm, near St. Michael, MD for 10 years. He was the beef manager at Bloomfield Farms, Kennedyville, MD for 6 years. He was the rural mail carrier in Kennedyville, MD for 4 years and retired from Tri-Gas & Oil, of Chestertown, MD as a truck driver after serving 17 years there. Mr. Dulin had served as a 4 H leader in Talbot and Kent Counties and was a member of the Healthy Hearts in Chestertown, MD. Mr. Dulin was a very active member of the Betterton-Still Pond Lions Club serving as President 3 times and was also very active in the District level of Lions Clubs serving District 22-B. In his 36 years of service. In 1993 Mr. Dulin was given by his club one of the highest forms of recognition, he was awarded the Melvin-Jones Fellowship through Lions International and his home club. Mr. Dulin was also very active in the Volunteer Fire Service, 1st in St. Michaels, MD and the Kennedyville Vol. Fire Co. In his 50 plus years of service Mr. Dulin served in many offices and positions. Mr. Dulin enjoyed selling fund raising tickets for the fire co. and Lions Club. He also served as president of the Talbot County Corn Club in 1956. Mr. Dulin enjoyed putting puzzles together with the other residents of Briscoe Manor, and for over 50 years, he enjoyed telling everyone who would listen about the wonderful Christmas village under their Christmas tree. Mr. Dulin loved to talk to people.

Mr. Dulin is survived by his wife of 57 years Mildred Chance Dulin; 1 daughter Joanne Fish and her husband Don of Kennedyville, MD; 1 grandson James F. Williams, IV of Trappe, MD; 1 great Grandson James F. Williams V of Glen Burnie, MD; his step-mother, Mattie Whitby Dulin of Easton, MD; 2 brothers, Crawford Dulin of Wye Mills, MD, Franklin Dulin of Preston, MD, 5 sisters; Alma Chance of Trappe, MD, Lillian Mahoney of Mannassus, VA, Myrtle Preesley, Jacquelyn Hurley and Eloise Dulin all of Easton, MD. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Leslie M. Dulin, a granddaughter, Nancy Jo Elizabeth Williams and 2 brothers John P. and Elsworth Dulin and a baby sister Dorothy Dulin.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, July 30th at 2:00p.m. from the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, MD. Friends and family may call Saturday, July 29th from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. and again one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Chester Cemetery, Chestertown, MD. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Kennedyville Vol. Fire Co., PO Box 98, Kennedyville, MD 21645 or to the Betterton-Still Pond Lions Club C/O Richard Gorsuch, 13246 Still Pond Road, Still Pond, MD 21667.

Shirley Mae (Ansorg) Schauber of Nokomis, Florida formerly of Trappe, Maryland died on Thursday July 27, 2000 in Chestertown, Maryland. She was 65.

Born on October 5, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Arthur C. and Dorothy M. Winters Ansorg. Mrs. Schauber was a 1955 graduate from York Hospital School of Nursing. She married Adam B. Schauber, Jr. and due to Mr. Schauber's career with the U.S. Air Force they resided in many locals. In 1970 they retired to Trappe, Maryland where Mrs. Schauber worked as a nurse with Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge, Md. and later House in the Pines Nursing Center in Easton, Md. In 1985 they moved to Florida and resided in the Sarasota area. She enjoyed traveling.

In addition to her husband she is survived by 2 sons: Jon Schauber USN Retired of Mechanicsburg, Pa. and Dr. Michael Schauber of Fredericksburg, Maryland; also survived by a daughter: Dorothy M. Carroll of Cordova, Md. along with 4 grandchildren.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to your local American Lung Association or to local Hospice Foundation.

Hiram "Eddie" Walter, Jr. of Stevensville, MD. Died Thursday July 27, 2000 at his home in Stevensville, MD. He was 77.

Born on May 29, 1923 in Baltimore, MD. The son of the late Hiram Edward Walter, Sr. and Grace Teresa Ochs. He was a graduate from Poly Tech in Baltimore, MD. He later attended John's Hopkins University for two years. Mr. Walter enlisted in the Navy on July 27, 1942 and served during WW II with service at Usntsch Auburn, ALA., NAS Lakehurst, N.J., A Squad. 14 & Blimp Squad. 14 & 12. He received a European Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and a Victory Medal. He was Honorably Discharged on January 31, 1946. He married Mary Jane Wenger on November 28, 1946. They resided in the Randallstown area where Mr. Walter worked as a General Foreman for Baltimore Gas & Electric in Baltimore, MD. After 43 years of service he retired in 1985. He was a member of the American Legion Post 278 in Stevensville, MD. VFW and Knights of Columbus #3960 in Randallstown, MD.

He is survived by his wife Mary Jane Walter of Stevensville, MD. A son Mark Edward Walter of Westminster, MD. Four daughters (4) Martha Jane Kellogg of Hunt Valley, MD. Ann Clarice Durkee of Lutherville, MD., Elise Teresa Jones of Sparks, MD. and Mary John Anderson of Stevensville, MD. And eight (8) grandchildren. A sister Teresa B. Walter predeceased on June 20, 2000. Funeral Service will be held 11AM on Monday July 31, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday July 30, 2000 from 3PM to 5PM. Burial will be in Maryland's Veterans Cemetery Eastern Shore near Hurlock, MD. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to American Heart Association 300 Hope Road Centreville, MD. 21617.

July 26, 2000

Minnie Bennum Balderson of Oxford died at Talbot Hospice House on Wednesday July 26, 2000. She was 79. Born in Georgetown, DE on August 2, 1920, she was one of 10 children of the late George Washington and Virginia Torbert Bennum. In 1938 she moved to Oxford, where she met her husband, Emory Leon Balderson, whom she married in January 1940. They moved to Easton where Mr. Balderson died in September 1990. Her twin sister, Ruth Bennum Pope died in May 1989. Mrs. Balderson is survived by a daughter, Bonnie B. Taylor of Easton; a son, Barry Balderson of Newport, DE; a sister, Isabelle L. Bennum of Oxford and four grandchildren, Christian N. Koste, Jason A. Koste, Emily N. Balderson and Diana M. Balderson. Funeral services will be held at the graveside at Oxford Cemetery on Saturday July 29 at 2 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

Franklin LeRoy "Pete" Cronshaw of Chestertown, Maryland died on July 26, 2000 at Kent and Queens Hospital in Chestertown. He was 74.

Born on Sept. 25, 1925 he was the son of the late Edward Sylvester and Katie Price Cronshaw. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Louise Smith in 1974 and his son William E. Cronshaw in 1964. Mr. Cronshaw was engaged in farming for the majority of his life. While residing in Centreville, in his earlier years, he was active with the Goodwill Vol. Fire Department and the Odd Fellows Club. Mr. Cronshaw moved to Chestertown where he was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church for 50 years. He served as chairman of the board of trustees and was actively involved in restoration of the church steeple. He was a member of the Kent County Farm Bureau and a Director with Kent County Southern States Coop. On June 6, 1998 he married the former Miriam Sewell Perkins. Mr. Cronshaw enjoyed hunting, boating, and crabbing. He was an accomplished skeet shooter and enjoyed playing cards.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 sister-in-laws: Dorothy Mae Cronshaw of Chestertown, Md., Florence Cronshaw of Barclay, Md., and Julia Cronshaw of Smyrna, De., a special niece and nephew: Phyllis and Arthur Cannon of Sudlersville, Md. along with several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 6 siblings: Catherine Cronshaw Cosden, Edward P. Cronshaw, Earl P. Cronshaw, Eldridge P. Cronshaw, George H. Cronshaw, and Linwood Cronshaw.

Funeral service will be held on Monday July 31, 2000 at 12:00 noon at Christ United Methodist Church in Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday evening July 30, 2000 between the hours of 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Interment will be in Chester Cemetery Chestertown.

Contributions may be made in his name to Kent and Queen Anne's Rescue Squad P.O. Box 126 Chestertown, Md. 21620 or Christ United Methodist Church P.O. Box 262 Chestertown, Md. 21620.

Ernest Egon Kramer of Centreville, MD. died Wednesday July 26, 2000 at his home. He was 71.

Born on March 3, 1929 in Sidney, Australia he is the son of Ester Schoellkofs and the late Ernest Kramer. Raised in Connecticut he attended Pomforet and later received his BA. From Dartmouth College. He married Pamela Wahl in 1951. They lived in Japan for a while and later returned to the United States to New York State where Mr. Kramer was a farmer; in 1958 they moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and would later settle in Centreville where Mr. Kramer was a self employed farmer. His wife Pamela Wahl Kramer predeceased him in April of 1988. He is survived by his mother Ester S. Kramer Roberts of Connecticut, two sons Matthew Kramer of Mass. and Zachary of Denton, MD. Three daughters Amadea Kramer of California, Alexandra Kramer of Baltimore, MD. And Theodora Kramer of Wisconsin. And a brother Daniel F. Kramer of Wye Mills, MD.

Services will be private.
