Mary H. Hoch

WILLIAMSPORT - Mary Helen Hoch, 93, of Milestone Garden Apartments and formerly of Mountain View Circle of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at Williamsport Retirement Village, Williamsport.

Born Sept. 13, 1904, in Fairview, Md., she was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Rhoda D. Weller Cromer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Austin Beard Hoch Sr., in 1981.

She was employed by Fairchild Aircraft from 1941 to 1949.

She was a charter member of Church of the Holy Trinity, Hagerstown.

She is survived by a daughter, Helen Marie Rauber of Wichita, Kan.; two brothers, Austin B. "Jack" Hoch Jr. and William O. Hoch, both of Williamsport; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma Kershner and Maude Shank; and one brother, Roy Cromer.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Church of the Holy Trinity, 17805 Oak Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport.

Faith L. Van Winkle Mills

BOONSBORO - Faith Lynn Van Winkle Mills, infant daughter of Roger Lee Mills and Debra Lynn Van Winkle of Boonsboro, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

She is survived by a sister, Ashley Morgan Rice at home; maternal grandparents, Henry A. and I. Jane Van Winkle of Boonsboro; paternal grandfather, Roger L. Mills Sr. of Williamsport; paternal grandmother, Ruby Taylor of Falling Waters, W.Va.; and five aunts, an uncle and cousins.

Service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Fonrose M. Grimm

Fonrose McClellan "Grimmie" Grimm, 67, of 17731 Broadfording Road, Hagerstown, died Friday, July 3, 1998, at his home.

Born Sept. 5, 1930, in Samples Manor, Md., he was the son of the late Thomas Howell and Laura Ethel Giffin Grimm.

He was employed as a service repairman for Hancock Home Center, Hancock, retiring in 1995. He was previously employed by H & T Maytag Co., Hagerstown.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a member and past deacon of Christ Reformed UCC, Franklin Street, Hagerstown.

He was a past member of Hub City Softball League of Washington County.

He was a member of Senior Softball League of Washington County and Wacohu Grange Hall 415 of Hagerstown. He was a life member of Antietam Fire Co. of Hagerstown and an avid bowler for more than 40 years.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Virginia J. "Jenny" Grove Grimm; a daughter, Kathy D. Stevens of Hagerstown; a son, Brad F. "Beef" Grimm of Hagerstown; two nieces whom he raised, Paula D. Stevens of Parsons, W.Va., and Tammy C. Benner of Tennessee; five sisters, Bertha Bussard, Theda Monninger and Wilda Crookshank, all of Hagerstown, Velma Cavender of Williamsport and Betty Kline of Samples Manor; a brother, Gerald L. Grim of Samples Manor; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. Military graveside services will be conducted by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open Monday after 9 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ Reformed UCC, 130 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or Senior Softball League, c/o Sam Ferguson, 20702 Emerald Drive, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Myrle Stottlemyer

Myrle Stottlemyer, 81, of 1360 Jefferson Blvd., Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at his home.

Born Aug. 11, 1916, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Elmer Charles and Minerva Alta Kline Stottlemyer.

He was a retired employee of Pangborn Corp.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

He is survived by a brother, Howard G. Stottlemyer of Hagerstown; two nephews, Lynn Stottlemyer of Bowie, Md., and Erman Stottlemyer; and four great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva N. Stottlemyer and Irene K. Deibert; and two brothers, Earmin Stottlemyer and George H. Stottlemyer.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Carroll L. Boyer will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Betty J. Whittington

LONACONING, Md. - Betty Jane Whittington, 75, of 42 W. Main St., died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

Born May 16, 1923, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late Hugh C. and Elizabeth "Bid" McKenty Fazenbaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Whittington, in 1993.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Bethel Holiness Church, Lonaconing. She was a past member of Lonaconing First Presbyterian Church.

She was a member of Morning Star Temple 1 Pythian Sisters and Georges Creek Senior Citizens, both of Lonaconing.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald Whittington of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Steve Whittington of Lonaconing; a brother, William Fazenbaker of Lonaconing; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, James Lee Whittington; and a sister, Bernice Mae Lancaster.

Services will be Monday at Bethel Holiness Church. The Rev. George Loar will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, and on Monday one hour prior to services at the church.

Mary L. Hull

Mary Louise Hull, 89, of Hagerstown, died Friday, July 3, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 27, 1909, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Franklin and Elva Shockey Addlesberger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Oscar Hull, in 1990.

She is survived by a daughter, Martha Doris Barnhart of Hagerstown; a son, Kenneth Junior Hull of Hagerstown; two sisters; a brother; three grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. J. Norman Mayer will officiate.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Arthur G. Peiffer

Arthur G. Peiffer, 75, of Hagerstown, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at Coffman Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born Feb. 18, 1923, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Aaron Gilbert and Ruth Minerva Sprankle Peiffer. He lived his early life in Waynesboro.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Mae Shultz Peiffer, in 1990.

He was a 1941 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

In his early life, he was employed by Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro, and Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing, Hagerstown. He then worked for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he worked on the Underground Pentagon Project known as Site R. Prior to retiring in 1981, he worked for Washington County Hospital as comptroller for 26 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II from 1943 to 1945. He was assigned to the 1214th Military Police Co. in the China-Burma-India Theater and was discharged as a corporal.

He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hagerstown, where he served on the church council, was a lay liturgist and was Sunday School superintendent for 10 years.

He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, Hagerstown; Acacia Lodge 586 Free and Accepted Masons, Waynesboro; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Consistory of Harrisburg, Pa.; Hospital Financial Management Association; charter member of Maryland Chapter of the IIFMA; member of Financial Advisory Committee of the Maryland, D.C., and a member of the Delaware Hospital Association; the Financial Review Board of the Health Services Cost Review Commission and served on various PTAs and CAC committees. He also served on the advisory council of the Ravenwood Lutheran Retirement Village.

He had been a member of the board of Civil Service Examiners at Fort Ritchie.

He is survived by one daughter, Karen S. Peiffer Smyth of Hagerstown; seven sisters, Lenora R. Shatzer of Hagerstown, J. Kathryn O'Donnell and Shirley M. Spealman, both of Chambersburg, Pa., Sandra D. Huber of Fayetteville, Pa., M. Jane Hoffman of Waynesboro, Margaret M. Wagaman of Mont Alto, Pa., and Trudy J. Wagaman of Springfield, Va.; five brothers, Charles A. Peiffer, Gerald E. Peiffer, Kenneth L. Peiffer, all of Waynesboro, Frederick D. Peiffer of Mercersburg, Pa., and Lowell E. Peiffer of West Virginia; one half-sister, Helen L. Minnich of Waynesboro; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Barbara Stenger of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by two half-sisters, V. Ruth Peiffer and M. Evelyn Shadle; and three half-brothers, J. Norman Peiffer, David L. Peiffer and Harold R. Peiffer.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Carroll L. Boyer will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. Military graveside services will be conducted by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Robert D. Swarner

Robert D. Swarner, 82, of Hagerstown, and formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at Avalon Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born July 31, 1915, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Daniel Robert and Agnes K. Irvin Swarner.

He retired in 1962 from Kelly-Springfield Tire Co., Cumberland, with 25 years of service. He had worked in the production department.

He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army.

He was a past president of the Kelly Retirement Organization. He was formerly active in the Kelco Federal Credit Union, where he served on the board of directors.

He was a member of Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion and Cumberland Aerie 245 Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Anna M. Swarner; one daughter, Sue A. Britton of Hagerstown; one son, Robert L. Swarner of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland. The Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, Md. A combined group from various veterans' organizations will accord military graveside services.

Friends will be received at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
