Mary Jane Wagner
HANCOCK - Mary Jane Miller Wagner, 68, of 14631 Tollgate Ridge Road, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born April 24, 1930, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Oliver W. and Bertha M. Kauffman Miller.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy S. Wagner, in 1985. They were married in October 1951.
She attended Waynesboro, Pa., schools.
She worked for Avalon Manor Nursing Home in Hagerstown, then Hagerstown Shoe Factory and later, Reeder's Memorial Home, Boonsboro.
She is survived by one daughter, Joann C. Hott of Hancock; three sons, Roy E. Wagner Sr., Robert L. Wagner and George P. Wagner, all of Hagerstown; one sister, Janet P. Pepple, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, Pa.; two brothers, Joseph L. Miller and Glenn Eugene Miller, both of Waynesboro; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Douglas S. Wagner, in 1995; two sisters, Gertrude Carbaugh Monn in 1979, and Margaret Wagner, in 1996; and one brother, Robert B. Miller, in 1997.
Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Robert Fitz will officiate. Burial will be in Burns Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mary E. Sappington
Mary E. Sappington, 87, of 433 Michigan Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Center, Hagerstown.
Born Feb. 27, 1911, in Unionville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Nettie M. Lugenbeel Sappington.
She retired from Hagerstown Shoe Co. after 25 years of service.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
She is survived by a brother, Ridgely G. Sappington of Hagerstown.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances V. Sappington; and two brothers, Charles P. Sappington and Shriner Sappington.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Fullen will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Church Cemetery, Libertytown, Md.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Elliott M. Mackereth
Elliott M. Mackereth, 60, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Center, Hagerstown.
Born Aug. 29, 1937, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clinton and Evelyn Robertson Mackereth Sr.
He was a member of Hagerstown High School class of 1954.
He was employed as a press operator at Danzer Metal Works.
He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.
He also was a member of Carpenter's Union Local 340.
He was a baseball and basketball fan.
He is survived by one daughter, Leslie C. Saunders of Hagerstown; three sons, Kevin Mackereth, Eric D. Mackereth and Lloyd P. Mackereth, all of Hagerstown; three sisters, Gay Younker of Hancock, Carol Whitmore of Hagerstown and Elvanne Sturbel of Mound, Minn.; three brothers, Clifton Mackereth Jr., Richard Mackereth and Larry Mackereth, all of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Pastor Bill L. Clark will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.
Visitation will be at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service.
James E. Fox Sr.
James E. "Jim" Fox Sr., 62, of Interval Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 22, 1936, in Edgemont, he was the son of the late Victor L. and Dorothy J. Law Fox.
He was in the construction business.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by five daughters, Ruth Gorman, Teresa Fox, Kitty Fox, Gloria Domer and Loretta Brown, all of Hagerstown; one son, James E. Fox Jr. of Hagerstown; one sister, Martha Bitner of Leitersburg; a friend, Barbara Pradel of Hagerstown; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Dorothy Fox; and one brother, Daniel Fox.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Park Road Bible Church, 750 Park Road, Hagerstown. Pastor Ronald Key will officiate. Burial will be in Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery in Flintstone, Md., at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.

Mary F. Peacock
Mary French Peacock, 77, of 398 1/2 Bryan Place, Hagerstown, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at her home.
Born July 20, 1920, in Bath, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Paul Howard and Marion Scott French.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy Kenneth Peacock, in 1976.
She was employed by Westinghouse in Bath, retiring in 1980. She also worked part time for Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital, Bath.
She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Bath.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Spann and Paula M. Naylor, both of Hagerstown; one son, Chris J. Peacock of Greenwood, Ind.; one sister, Kaye A. Dorsey of Bath; one brother, Paul Scott French of Ellicott City, Md.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia Ann Peacock and Rikki I. Davis; one son, Edward J. Peacock; and one brother, Edward French.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing or visitation.

Preston P. Shupp
Preston Pershing Shupp, 79, formerly of Potomac Towers, Hagerstown, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at Clearview Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 29, 1918, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clayton C. and Nora E. Mowen Shupp.
He retired from Baker Trucking.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the 29th and 37th Division Combat Engineers in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Ribbon and Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He is survived by one daughter, Shelva Jean Belcher of Hagerstown; one sister, Ruth Shupp of Clear Spring; four brothers, William M. Shupp of Hagerstown, Clyde C. Shupp of Clear Spring, Robert G. Shupp of St. Thomas, Pa., and Donald L. Shupp of Pinesburg; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen M. Shupp and Catherine Ankeney; and three brothers, Hillard C. Shupp, John K. Shupp and Eugene Shupp.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jay Fretz will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Richard L. Mummert
MAUGANSVILLE - Deputy Richard Lee "Dick" Mummert, 62, of 13818 Maugansville Road, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 25, 1936, in Greencastle, Pa., he was the son of Hubert S. Mummert of Quincy, Pa., and the late Catherine Stickler Mummert.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie E. Breeden Mummert, in 1995.
A deputy first class, he had been with the Washington County Sheriff's Department for 28 years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Greencastle.
He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police, Blue Knights Motorcycle Club Maryland Chapter 2 and Washington County Sheriff's Association.
In addition to his father, he is survived by one daughter, Diane Lynn Small of Maugansville; two sons, Eddie Mummert and Mike W. Mummert, both of Maugansville; one sister, Louise Hummer of Sevierville, Tenn.; two brothers, Dennis Mummert of Hagerstown and David Mummert of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Evelyn Thomas of Marion, Pa.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sharon Kay Mummert; one sister, Janet Bradley; and one brother, Sonny Mummert.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. John Mills will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Clear Spring, with a graveside memorial service to be conducted by the Fraternal Order of Police.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Joseph W. Gerberich
Joseph W. Gerberich, 101, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Monday, July 13, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born April 27, 1897, in Palmyra, Pa., he was the son of the late John E. and Elizabeth Harts Gerberich.
He was retired from Hagerstown Shoe Co.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War I.
He was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, and the Men's Bible Class.
He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion; and Reno Barracks 152 World War I Veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah E. Cunningham Gerberich; great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Doris Kovachvich; one son, Wayne E. Gerberich; two sisters, Alice Funck and Carrie McClure; and one brother, John E. Gerberich.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dean M. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Funkstown Cemetery, Funkstown, with a military graveside service by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
