Joseph W. Nuse
Joseph W. Nuse, 68, of 851 Pine St., Hagerstown, died Monday, July 13, 1998, at his home.
Born Feb. 22, 1930, in Yarrisburg, Md., he was the son of the late Joseph R. and Ellen Phillips Nuse.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Domer Nuse, in 1993.
He was employed by Western Maryland Railway for 30 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a veteran of the Korean War; and served with the K.M.A.G. Group; and 25th Infantry Division.
He attended Christ Fellowship Assembly of God.
He is survived by three sons, Steven M. Nuse and Gregory L. Nuse, both of Hagerstown, and Joseph A. Nuse of Greencastle, Pa.; one sister, Rose Hawthorne of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Noel L. Huffman will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, with military honors by American Legion Morris Frock Post 42.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Raymond F. Symonds Jr.
SMITHSBURG - Raymond Frederick Symonds Jr., 45, of Smithsburg, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 11, 1953, in Staten Island, N.Y., he was the son of Raymond Frederick and Glenys Lorraine Savary Symonds Sr. of Cascade.
He was a 1971 graduate of Smithsburg High School. He graduated from Hagerstown Junior College with an associate degree; and received a bachelor of arts degree from Hood College, Frederick, Md.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He was employed as a manager of Martin's Hardware, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. He later was employed as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 14 years.
He attended Bethel United Methodist Church, Chewsville.
He was a member of National Association of Letter Carriers; was a scoutmaster with Troop 66 Boy Scouts of America, First Christian Church, Hagerstown; he was a life Scout; a member of Order of the Arrow; and a member of the National Arbor Society.
He was a whitewater rafting guide with River and Trail Outfitters, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; and was a fisherman.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Katherine "Kassie" E. Norman Symonds of Smithsburg; three brothers, Richard W. Symonds of Gloucester, Va., Douglas P. Symonds of Monroe, N.C., and Dan W. Symonds of Smithsburg; two nieces; and four nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. John W. Schildt will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The viewing will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hubert N. Seal
FUNKSTOWN - Hubert N. Seal, 91, formerly of West Baltimore Street, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Reeders Memorial Home, Boonsboro.
Born Feb. 26, 1907, in Luray, Va., he was the son of the late Isaac Hubert and Essie R. Cave Seal.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Iva Catherine Short Seal; and by his second wife, Marie Dayhoff Seal.
As a young man he worked on Skyline Drive in Luray; Pennsylvania Railroad; and Moller Organ Co. He was a farmer. While living in Funkstown, he had a produce stand, and honey bees, making his own honey.
He was a member of Calvary Grace Brethren Church.
He is survived by three sons, Cecil H. Seal Sr. of Boonsboro, Frank D. Seal and Kenneth L. Seal, both of Hagerstown; three stepsons, Walter R. Dayhoff of Florence, Ala., Richard L. Dayhoff of Smithsburg and George Dayhoff of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Geneva Pearl Pettit of Luray; one brother, Roy J. Seal of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Donald L. Seal; three sisters, Esther Mae Shenk, Mattie V. Seal and Annie Seal; and eight brothers, Isaac Prudence Seal, Harry Benton Seal, Elmer J. Seal, Gilbert Cletus Seal, Andrew William Seal, Virgil H. Seal, John Samuel Seal and Daniel Nathaniel Seal.
Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Douglas A. Courter will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Boonsboro.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Nellie E. Carter
DOVER, Del. - Nellie Elizabeith Lane Carter, 78, formerly of Dover, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, in Greeley County.
She was born Oct. 1, 1919, in Templeville, Md.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Carter Sr., in 1995.
She was a 1937 graduate of Sudlersville High School.
She worked at Bryan's Drug Store on Loockerman Street, Dover. She also was a nurses' aide at K.G.H. in Dover. She was the manager at the day-care center on Dover Air Force Base.
She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Dover. She was associate pastor at the Dover church and Sussex/Central church in Rehoboth Beach, Del., and Corner Stone Church in Accomack, Va. She was a Bible worker from 1969 to 1981 for churches in Tridelphia, Md., Hagerstown, Accomack and at the Indiana conference in Cicero, Ind., Noblesville, Ind., and Elwood, Ind.
She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Ann Carter Farrell and Thelma Louise Carter, both of Greeley County, and Trudy Sharp of Milford, Del.; a son, Thomas C. Carter Jr. of Canterbury, Del.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchhildren.
Services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Wyoming Avenue, Dover. Burial will be in Sudlersville Cemetery, Sudlersville.
Friends may call Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sussex/Central Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Rehoboth Beach, Del. 19971.

Sidney N. Rice
Sidney N. "Johnny" Rice, 61, of 238 S. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 25, 1937, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Victor Davis and Lillian Elizabeth Hill Rice.
He was employed by Jamison Door Co. for 36 years.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.
He also was a member of Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.; Greencastle American Legion Post 373, and Jamison Golf League.
He is survived by his wife, Helen M. Ridenour Rice; two daughters, Kendra L. Showe and Krista T. Feigley, both of Hagerstown; one brother, James W. Rice of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald E. Rice.
Services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Lauren H. Lay will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Daisy F. Eardley
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Daisy F. Eardley, 88, of North Kings Highway, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 15, 1909, in Horry County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John C. and Ellen Harper Whittington.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell C. Eardley.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the DOES.
She is survived by three stepsons, Russell C. Eardley Jr., Clifford C. Eardley and George T. Eardley, all of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Delores E. Detrich of Myrtle Beach and Connie Maile of Maugansville; and a niece.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at McMillan-Small Funeral Home Chapel, Myrtle Beach.
The family will receive friends Sunday after the service.

Daniel C. Flook Jr.
Daniel Charles Flook Jr., 86, of Hagerstown, formerly of Petersville, Md., died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 20, 1911, in Petersville, he was the son of the late Daniel Charles and Nena Hemp Flook.
He was a retired farmer and former employee with Southern States Co-op in Brunswick, Md.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Brunswick.
He was a member of the Lawrence Everhart Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
He is survived by a daughter, Jane E. Sundstrom of Sharpsburg; two sons, Daniel C. Flook III of Williamsport and William C. Flook II of Hagerstown; a sister, Margaret H. Flook of Aurora, Colo.; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Louise Cincotta, E. Evelyn Flook, Adele Hedges and Eleanor Aris; and a brother, William Clayton Flook.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 112 E. A St., Brunswick. The Rev. Stephen Swift will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mark's Cemetery, Petersville.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

John W. Snyder
John William Snyder, 61, of 407 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore.
Born July 17, 1936, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late George William and Margaret Irene Jacobs Snyder.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dolores Jean Weir Snyder, in 1968.
He was employed by Union Rescue Mission in Hagerstown. He previously was employed by Mack Trucks, Food Lion and Conservit. He had been a farmer.
He was a member of First Brethren Church in Hagerstown.
He was a member of Aerie 694 FOE in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Henneberger Snyder; four daughters, Judy L. Goltz, Bev A. Snyder and Ann Marie Herold, all of Hagerstown, and Brenda Lee Snyder of Texas; a son, John William Snyder Jr. of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; four sisters, Nancy Rebecca James of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Bonnie Kay Fraley of Williamsport, and Ruth Ann Shipley and Connie Fay Noll, both of Martinsburg; four brothers, Paul Franklin Snyder of Winchester, Va., Keith Seldon Snyder of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Bernard David Snyder and Gary Wayne Snyder, both of Martinsburg; special friend, Marie Grim of Hagerstown; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Rachael Irene Snyder; and a brother, George Kenneth Snyder.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Falling Waters Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Falling Waters, W.Va. The Rev. Bruce Foster will officiate.
