July 16, 2000

S.E.W. Friel, Jr., Lumber and Canning Executive died suddenly on Sunday, July 16, 2000 at Queenstown, Maryland. Samuel Edward Whiting Friel, Jr., was born in Queenstown on January 13, 1909, the son of the late Martha W. D. Reynolds and Samuel Edward Whiting Friel.

Married Margery Kengla Holland of Montgomery County, Maryland and Washington, D.C. on July 15, 1941 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Forest Glen, Maryland.

Mr. Friel was a partner and CEO of the Friel Lumber Company and S.E.W. Friel Canning Company, which were founded in 1904. He was also Chairman of the Board and director of Queenstown Wholesale Supply Company and Chairman of the Board of King Foods, Inc.

During World War II, The S.E.W. Friel Firm received and “A” Award from the government in 1944 for outstanding services in providing food for the armed services. From 1945 to 1947 he was a member of the Prison Reform Commission. He was a member of the Mid-Atlantic Canners Association, formerly Tri-State Packers Association, serving as a Director 1945-54; Chairman of Legislative Committee 1956-58 and President 1951-52. He was also a director of National Canners Association 1942-46; 1953-56 and 1968-71; and a member of the Legislative Committee since 1956.

Also, he was a member of the National Food Processors Association and a Diamond Pin member of the Old Guard Society.

He was formerly a director, Vice President then President of Queen Anne’s County Free Library and Chairman of the Building Committee for the present library building.

Formerly he was Director and President of Queen Anne’s County Farmers Cooperative Association. He was also a former chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Queenstown. A former director and Vice President of Maryland Manufacturers Association.

He was a charter member, former President and then director of Tidewater Chamber of Commerce.

He also formerly served as chairman of the Board of Zoning Appeal of Queen Anne’s Co., Md.

He was formerly a member of the Advisory Board of the Economic Development Commission of Maryland. Also served on the board of Associated Industries of Maryland.

He was formerly a member of the Maryland State Planning Commission and a director of Maryland State Chamber of Commerce.

Also he was a former member of The General Assembly Compensation Commission (Md.).

He was a charter member of the Queenstown Lions Club, former Secretary then serving as President.

He was a charter member and former director of Queen Anne’s County Historical Society.

He was formerly a member of Mile River Yacht Club, former member of the Board of Governors of Corsica River Yacht Club and member of Kent Island Yacht Club. Was formerly member of the Bishop’s committee of the Laity Diocese of Wilmington, Del.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Friel is survived by a brother, Daniel D. Friel of Greenville, Delaware. A number of nieces and nephews survive Mr. Friel: Harriet A. Sisk, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Harvey E. Sisk, Jr., St. Cloud, Minnesota; Mary Eileen Sisk, St. Cloud,Minnesota; James G. Sisk, St. Cloud, Minnesota; Patricia Reynolds Friel, Chadds Ford, PA; Barbara June Friel, Denver, Colorado; Daniel D. Friel, Kennett Square, PA.; Mary Friel Huber, Allendale, NJ; James R. Friel, Jr., Centreville, Md.; Pamela Friel Bernard, Queenstown, Md.

He was predeceased by Brothers: James R. Friel, Sr., 1983; Albert B. Friel, 1990:

Harry Daniel Friel died at age 6; Sister: Emily Friel Owens 1992.

A mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Peter’s Catholic Church , Queenstown at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 21, 2000.

Friends may call 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 408 South Liberty Street, Centreville, Md. on Thursday, July 20,2000.

July 14, 2000

Ruth Lyman Mider of Silver Spring, MD died at her daughter’s home on Friday, July 14, 2000. She was 91.

Born October 16, 1908 in Middletown, New York, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Ada Boyd Lyman. She graduated from Middletown High School and received her B.S. and M.D. from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. She began working as a general physician in Middletown, NY for three years prior to her marriage to G. Burroughs Mider on January 7, 1939. They made their home in Rochester, NY and Bethesda, MD where she was a homemaker. Dr. Mider died in 1985.

She was a member of the American Association of University Women and the Women’s Club of Bethesda, MD.

Mrs. Mider is survived by a daughter, Betty Maynard of Queenstown, three grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to The Hospice of Queen Anne’s Inc., 300 Del Rhodes Avenue, Queenstown, MD 21658.

Mary Virginia “Ginny” Plummer of Fairlee, Md. died on Friday July 14, 2000 at her home after a long illness. She was 86.

Born in Kent County Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Sally Hudson Miller. She is the wife of Carl Plummer whom she married on March 11, 1937.

Mrs. Plummer was a 1932 graduate of Chestertown High School. In the 1950’s she was employed as manager and caretaker of the Broadnox Mansion by the then Glenn L. Martin Farms, later known as Remington Farms, and currently as Chesapeake Farms. Mrs. Plummer later worked as secretary for the Lands End Farm in Quaker Neck. In her youth, Mrs. Plummer had a great love for the outdoors, enjoying hunting and raising wildlife. She was also an avid gardener. A member of Salem United Methodist Church in Fairlee, Maryland for over 50 years, Mrs. Plummer was very active with the Methodist Women. She was also active in the Kent County Homemakers and volunteered her skills at the Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital.

In addition to her husband of 63 years, she is survived by a brother: Fred Miller of Hagerstown, Md., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday July 17, 2000 at 1:00 P.M. at Salem United Methodist Church in Fairlee, Maryland. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday July 16, 2000 between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Maryland.

Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery near Chestertown, Md. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Salem United Methodist Church 23055 Parsons Road Chestertown, Maryland 21620 or to Kent County Hospice 103 Dixon Drive Chestertown, Maryland 21620. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Chestertown, Maryland.

July 12, 2000

Kurt Frederick Roser of Queen Anne’s County died July 12, 2000 at Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore. He was 62.

He was the son of the late Gertrude Herold Roser and Frederick Herman Roser.

He was a former U.S. Marine and past Marine and past VFW Commander of Post 7464 in Grasonville.

Mr. Roser is survived by his wife Kay Seward Roser; three daughters, Veronica McCullough of Banner Elk, N.C., Michelle Stoops of Stevensville and Danita Roser of Centreville; two granddaughters ; his brother Fred Roser Jr. of Easton and sister, Elise Lister of Queenstown.

Funeral services will be held Sunday , July 23 at 3 p.m., at the Kent Island Alliance Church, Stevensville. The VFW will also present a memorial service with the church service. After the services the family will receive friends at VFW Post Home , Grasonville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to, the VFW Post 7464 and the Kent Island Alliance Church Building Fund.

Diane Priest Stinchcomb of Stevensville, MD. Died on July 12, 2000 at her parent’s home in Arnold, MD. She was 48.

Born on March 24, 1952 in Washington, D.C. the daughter of Robert W. and Jacqueline Millar Priest. She was a graduate of Severna Park High School Class of 1970. In 1974 she received her degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Married Earl R. Stinchcomb on July 13, 1974. Mrs. Stinchcomb began working for Dr. Ron Franks in Grasonville. She raised her family in Stevensville, MD. During this time she was a volunteer for Queen Anne’s County School Systems and was awarded as volunteer of the year in 1988.In 1996 she began working for Queen Anne’s County School System as a Library Assistant at the Queen Anne’s County High School and Kent Island High School.

Mrs. Stinchcomb was an active member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the church board and the church librarian., member of the Bay City Ladies Club, A noted soccer mom with Queen Anne’s Soccer and was treasurer for Commissioner Mark Belton.

She is survived by her husband Earl Raymond Stinchcomb of Stevensville, MD. Son Earl Wesley Stinchcomb of Stevensville, MD. A daughter Erin Elizabeth Stinchcomb of Stevensville, MD. Her parents Robert W. and Jacqueline M. Priest of Arnold, MD. and a brother Robert W. Priest of Reisterstown, MD.

A Memorial Service will be held 11am July 19, 2000 at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society P.O. Box 132, Queenstown MD 21658.

July 10, 2000

Christina Julia Franke died Monday July 10, 2000 at the Spa Creek Nursing Home in Annapolis, MD. She was 97.

Born December 11, 1902 in northeast Baltimore, she attended public schools there. While a pupil in school #37 she was one of the 6,500 Baltimore school children who formed the 90’ x 144’ human American Flag in the Star Spangled Banner Centennial Celebration at Fort McHenry, Sept. 12, 1914.

Following a business course at Strayer’s Business College she was employed as Stenographer in the Credit & Accounting Dept. of the American Oil Co. until her marriage to Stephen Bernnard Franke June 5, 1924. They resided in Catonsville where son, William, was born August 14, 1928.

During World War II she was employed in the Vocational War Production Training, State Dept. of Education office. After this program was discontinued she was transferred to the State Dept. of Health Bureau of Medical Services under Dr. Dean Roberts. In 1950 when her husband was employed by the CIA in Washington, D.C. the family moved to Landover, MD., then upon her husband’s retirement they moved to Kent Island Estates Stevensville, MD in 1963.

In 1972 she was employed as secretary to the Board of Directors of the Kent Island Estates Road Construction & Maintenance Assoc., Inc. and maintained the office in her home. She retired in 1978.

Mrs. Franke was active in Church work, having served as organist in several churches, including ten years as Volunteer Organist in Landover Christian Church and one year as Church Secretary; three years as Organist and one year as Secretary of the Sunday School in Galilee Lutheran Church when it was located in the Stevensville Shopping Center, and organized the Youth Choir there.

She is survived by her one son, William B. Franke of Mt. Airy, MD; one sister, Alice M. Grau of Columbia, MD; and two brothers, John W. Getterman of Baltimore, MD, Leonard A. Getterman of Lakeland, FL. Christina was predeceased by her husband, Stephen B. Frnake; a sister, Lenore I. Schmidt; and one step-brother, William E. Getterman.

Funeral Services will be held 11AM on Friday July 14, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Where family and friends may call one hour before and on Thursday July 13, 2000 from 3PM to 5PM and 7Pm to 9PM at the Funeral Home. Interment will be in V.F.W. Cemetery in Hurlock, MD.

William Frederick Gliss, Jr. of Easton died on Monday, July 10, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital in Easton. He was 81.

Born in Baltimore on July 8, 1919, he was the son of the late William F., Sr., and Pearl Taylor Gliss. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-46 and then in the National Guard for eight years. In 1955, he received a B.S. degree in Economics from John Hopkins University. While living in Baltimore, he was the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Legg Mason and then the President of the Investment Trust Department of Equitable Trust Company. He retired in 1984 and four years later moved to Savannah, GA until 1997 when he moved to Easton. He enjoyed golfing and riding with the Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club.

Mr. Gliss was a member and served on the vestry and as Senior Warden for the Immanuel Episcopal Church in Glencoe, MD and for the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Savannah, GA. He also served on the committees of the Diocese of Maryland and as a board member of St. Paul’s School for Girls, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Wesley College in Dover, DE.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, the former Ruth Sawyer, whom he married in December 1944, he is survived by two daughters, Christine Bowers of Baltimore and Susan Gliss of Dallas, TX; a brother, George Gliss of Augusta, GA; and a granddaughter, Laura Bowers of Baltimore. .

A Memorial Service will be held at the William Hill Manor Auditorium in Easton on July 21,2000 at 2 PM. Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Cathedral, 315 Goldsborough Street, Easton, MD 21601.

Gerald James Murphy Sr. of Rock Hall, Md. died Monday July 10, 2000 at the Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital in Chestertown, Md. He was 82.

Gerald James Murphy Sr. was born October 29, 1917 the son of the late James Michael Murphy and Anna Livsey. Mr. Murphy entered into active service in the United States Navy in 1944 and served on the U.S.S. Pathfinder in the Pacific during World War II . During his time in service he was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon, a Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon (one star), and the Pacific Theatre Ribbon. After his service in the Navy, Gerald Murphy returned home and worked as a truck driver for Penn Trucking in Chester, PA. Gerald J. Murphy belonged to the Frank M. Jarmin American Legion Post 36 in Chestertown, Md. and he was a in the Rock Hall Senior Citizens. Mr. Murphy also was a member of the Teamsters. He enjoyed attending the Centreville Church of God. He also enjoyed drawing and artwork and spending time with his family and friends.

Gerald James Murphy is survived by his wife Dorothy Ruth Murphy of Rock Hall, Md. 5 sons, Gerald James Murphy Jr. of Turnersville, NJ., Russell Joseph Murphy Sr. of Linfield, Pa., Albert Authur Murphy Sr. of Gaithersburg, Md., Robert Carl Murphy Sr. of Milford, De., and LTC James Michael Murphy of Burke, Va., 3 daughters, Patricia Marie Murphy of Tolchester, Md., Dorothy Ruth Cranfield of Rock Hall, Md., and Mary Jane Anderson of Newark, De., 1 sister, Rita Perry of Scranton, Pa., 26 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Gerald James Murphy was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 2 brothers.

Services will be held Thursday July 13, 2000 at 11 am. at the Centreville Church of God in Centreville, Md. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 7 – 9 and Thursday morning from 9-10 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Rd, Chestertown, Md.

Interment will follow services at the Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, Md.

In Lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be sent to the Centreville Church of God Building Fund 101 Gray Fox Lane, Centreville, Md. 21617.

William Coral Thomas, Sr. of Chester died Monday at the Corsica Hils Nursing Center in Centreville, MD. He was 79.

Born on September 21, 1921 in Stevensville, MD. He graduated from Stevensville High School in Stevensville, MD. Mr. Thomas began working as a school bus driver for Queen Anne’s County School System. He later served in the Army Air Core during WWII from 1941~1943. on March 30, 1943 he married Elizabeth M. Hopkins. Together they resided on Kent Island where Mr. Thomas continue his bus services with Queen anne’s County School System and owned and operated Bills Mobile and Thomas Auto Shop both on Kent Island. He retired in 1978. His wife predeceased him on January 23, 1981. He was a member of American Legion Post #278, Kent Island Yacht Club in Chester, mD. and Kent Island Volunteeer Fire Department.

He is survived by a son William Coral Thomas, Jr. of Easton, MD. three daughters Carol Thomas Mylander of Chestertown, MD., Elissa Thomas Crouch of Chester, MD. and Jennifer Thomas Morris of Chester, MD. Five (5) grandchildren and (3) great grandchilderen.

Funeral Services will be held 11AM on Thursday July 13, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Where family and friends may call one hour before and on Wednesday July 12, 2000 from 7Pm to 9PM at the Funeral Home. Interment will be in Stevensville Cemetery in Stevensville, MD. the family request that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Ave. Queenstown, MD. 21658.
