Thomas L. Zaffaroni

BOONSBORO - Thomas Lee Zaffaroni, 44, of 7743 Fairplay Road, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 6, 1954, in New Brighton, Pa., he was the son of Vivian Wolfe Sanner of Williamsport, and the late Alfred Zaffaroni.

He was a 1972 graduate of Williamsport High School.

He was employed as service manager at Interstate Ford in Shippensburg, Pa.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher and was a former council member.

He was active with the YMCA Swim Team, past president of the YMCA Swim Team Parents Association, and a National Level 2 Official for YMCA swimming.

He also was the district representative for C&P Swim League.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda R. Zaffaroni; one daughter, Kaitlyn M. Zaffaroni, at home; two sons, Michael T. Zaffaroni and Scott B. Zaffaroni, both at home; one sister, Sherry M. Zaffaroni of Williamsport; one brother, Donald Zaffaroni of Darlington, Pa.; and several nieces.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan and the Rev. Thomas L. Perry will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Visitation will be held at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or to Hagerstown YMCA Building Fund, 149 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Wilbur D. Hubbard

Wilbur DeWitt Hubbard, 81, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 1, 1916, in Utica Mills, Frederick County, Md., he was the son of the late Charles Clifton and Martha W. Shryock Hubbard.

He was a 1933 graduate of Taneytown High School in Carroll County, and later attended the University of Colorado and University of Denver.

He was employed by Pennsylvania Railroad and Conrail, retiring in 1978.

He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force on Okinawa during World War II, and in Guam during the Korean conflict.

He was a member of Old Otterbein United Methodist church in Baltimore.

He was a 33rd Degree Mason, having been a member of Friendship Lodge 84 and York Rite Bodies in Hagerstown; The Scottish Rite Bodies in Baltimore and Frederick, Md.; and The Boumi Shrine Temple and The Baldrick Club of Baltimore. He also was a member of Royal Order of Scotland of Washington, D.C., and The Baltimore Passenger Association of Maryland.

He was the last of his immediate family, and is survived by eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, George W. Hubbard, Henry R. Hubbard, Charles R. Hubbard and Emory Lee Hubbard.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Millard B. Knowles and the Rev. Edwin A. Schell will officiate. Burial will be in Keysville Union Cemetery in Keysville, Carroll County, Md.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Friendship Lodge 84 AF&AM will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m. Tuedsay at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation, 3800 N. Charles St., Baltimore, Md. 21218; or to Old Otterbein United Methodist Church, 112 W. Conway St., Baltimore, Md. 21201.

Travis A. Parker

Travis Allen Parker, infant son of Richard Allen Parker and Vanessa Leanne Canfield, of 141 High St., Hagerstown, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

He was born Aug. 6, 1998, in Baltimore.

He is survived by a sister, Kelsey Breanna Parker of Hagerstown; two brothers, Troy Allen Parker, his twin, and Richard Lee Parker, both of Hagerstown; maternal grandparents, Patrick Lynn Canfield of Butler, Pa., and Brenda Louise Dawson of Hagerstown; paternal grandparents, Jerry F. Benner and Linda Lou Benner of Hagerstown, Mallory "Hoot" Gibson of Pensacola, Fla., and Claude Parker of Pensacola; and aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandmother, Shirley Mae Bishop.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Robert Fitz will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in care of Vanessa Canfield, 141 High St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Edward M. Stoneberger

SMITHSBURG - Edward M. "Eddie" Stoneberger, 47, of South Main Street, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 8, 1951, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Milton W. and Genevieve M. Morrison Stoneberger.

He was a volunteer helper at Bisbee's Auction House in Smithsburg and a member of Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Co.

He is survived by three sisters, Frances E. Ford of Waldorf, Md., Florence D. Webb of Hagerstown, and Mary M. Stoneberger of Smithsburg; a brother, David W. Stoneberger of Edgemont; two aunts; an uncle; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg. Pastor Pat Malone will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mary M. Stoneberger, P.O. Box 254, Smithsburg, Md. 21783.

Sarah M. Bowman

WILLIAMSPORT - Sarah Mabel Bowman, 94, of 10608 Harry Heth Road, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born March 13, 1904, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Martin and Laura Elmira Shank Nave.

Her husband, Walter Lee Bowman, died in 1958.

She was employed as a weaver for Frederick Silk Mill for 30 years until retiring.

She was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church in Williamsport.

She is survived by a son, Rodney W. Nave of Williamsport; three nieces whom she raised, Freda D. Mumma of Hagerstown, Jean Harris and Patsy Landis, both of Williamsport; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery, Commerce Street, Williamsport.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, which will be open after 9 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Williamsport Ambulance Service, 30 W. Salisbury St., Williamsport, Md. 21795.

James E. Wilson Sr.

PASADENA, Md. - James Edward Wilson Sr., 62, of Pasadena, and formerly of Baltimore, died of cancer Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at his home.

He was born Oct. 13, 1935, in Maryland.

He was a graduate of Glen Burnie High School.

He was employed as a welder for BGE for 15 years, retiring in 1993.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman apprentice.

He was a member of Pasadena Sports Fishing Association and Local 101.

He enjoyed boating, fishing and crabbing.

He is survived by his wife, Mary C. Wilson; five children, James E. Wilson Jr. of Hagerstown, Robert Wilson of Severn, Md., and Jeanine Wilson, Deborah McElroy and Concetta Weibe, all of Pasadena; and five grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Jane Frances Catholic Church, with Monsignor Tinder as celebrant. Burial will be in Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home, Pasadena.

Carroll A. Holmes

Carroll Alfred "Pete" Holmes, 92, of 47 Devonshire Road, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 1, 1906, in Silver Grove, W.Va., he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Margaret Virginia Nick Holmes.

His first wife, Ruth Ellen Jamison Holmes, died in 1986.

He was a farmer and had been a barber in Sharpsburg. He retired in 1973 from Washington County Board of Education.

He was a charter member of Chestnut Grove Bible Church.

He is survived by his second wife, Mary C. Hardy Holmes, whom he married Feb. 13, 1988; a daughter, Esther J. Smith of Boonsboro; two sons, Ralph A. Holmes of Hagerstown and Wallace I. Holmes of Boonsboro; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a nephew and nieces.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Addie Webber; two brothers, Sylvester and Theodore Holmes; and a grandson.

Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Revs. Bruce Gephart and Dale R. Carver will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Richard M. Baker

MYERSVILLE, Md. - Richard Matthew Baker, 63, of 9433 Harmony Road, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center.

Born April 2, 1935, in Harmony, he was the son of the late Henry Benton and Jean Adele Meiklejohn Baker.

He was employed by Southern States Petroleum in Frederick, Md.

He was a member of Harmony Church of the Brethren, Myersville.

He also was a member of Valley Memorial Post 9 AMVETS in Middletown, Md.

He performed karaoke at area establishments.

Early in life, he was a well-known local baseball player. He was instrumental in the effort to obtain a memorial for Charlie Keller in Middletown Valley.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Patricia Coulter Baker; three daughters, Kimberly Adams, Lisa Scurto and Prandy Scurto, all of Myersville; a son, Kevin Matthew Baker of Myersville; two sisters, Etta Mae Wisner and Evelyn Baker Haines, both of Myersville; two grandsons; four granddaughters; cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer Baker and Mark Baker.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Harmony Church of the Brethren in Myersville. The Rev. Tracey Wiser will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Myersville.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, and at the church one hour prior to services on Wednesday. The funeral home will be open all day today.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 322-324 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
