Goldie M. Donaldson
GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Goldie M. Donaldson, 73, of Gaithersburg, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md.
Born July 24, 1925, in Luray, Va., she was the daughter of the late Cleveland Lee and Virginia Miller Foster.
She was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School, Rockville.
She retired in 1980 from National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., as a secretary after 36 years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Rockville.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Leonard E. Donaldson; a son, Tracy Stiles of Boonsboro; a sister, Joyce Lopez of Washington state; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Foster and George Foster.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home, 228 S. Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester, Va., where friends may visit one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Rockland Cemetery, Rockland, Va.
Friends may visit Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville, Md.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
Neal B. Kitchen
BOONSBORO - Neal Brown "Pap" Kitchen, 71, of 116 Lakin Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 14, 1927, in Tomahawk, W.Va., he was the son of the late James and Sylvia B. Everhart Kitchen.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a veteran World War II, serving with the U.S. Air Force.
He retired from Mack Trucks in 1987.
He was a member of Boonsboro American Legion Clopper-Michael Post 10.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqulyn R. "Jackie" Morgan Kitchen, whom he married July 15, 1950; three daughters, Terry L. Kitchen and Tina L. Yommer, both of Boonsboro and Tammy L. Stewart of Sharpsburg; a son, Steven N. Kitchen of Frederick; a sister, Beulah Cazer of Boonsboro; two brothers, Edward Kitchen of Martinsburg, W.Va. and Roy Kitchen of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Dwight David Kitchen; two sisters; and a brother.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Blessed Hope Church, 6371 Zittlestown Road, Boonsboro/Middletown. The Rev. Carroll L. Boyer and the Rev. John Yommer will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery, Boonsboro.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Friends may call at the funeral home anytime on Monday after 11 a.m.
Helen M. Bowen
Helen Miller Bowen, 87, of 11926 Dormayne Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 26, 1911, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Albert R. and Minnie Idella Cline Miller.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Corliss H. Bowen.
She was a graduate of Hagerstown High School; and attended Hagerstown Business College.
She retired from Geico Insurance Co. in Chevy Chase, Md., after more than 30 years of service.
She was a member of Hagerstown Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She was a member of AARP, a volunteer of Hagerstown Community College and a volunteer for American Red Cross.
She is survived by three sisters, Mary L. Bragunier, Betty J. Delosier and Glenna E. Brechbill, all of Hagerstown; two brothers, A. Romayne Miller and John Harlan Miller, both of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte R. Baker; and a brother, Robert K. Miller.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Revs. Jim Hoffer and John W. Schildt will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The viewing will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
James W. Crawford
James William "Bill" Crawford, 75, of Crest Drive, Hagerstown, and formerly of Little Orleans, Md., died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at his home.
Born Nov. 30, 1922, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late James M. and Gladys Lashley Crawford.
He retired in 1984 from Fairchild Industries as an inspector.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He was a member of Potomac Post 202 American Legion in Williamsport, Harry D. Ziegler Post 6319 VFW in Greencastle, Pa., Sportsmans Association in Greencastle, James W. Bowers Lodge 173 A.F.&A.M., Hancock, Ithiel Chapter 27 R.A.M. in Hagerstown, Palestine Council 16 R.&S.M., St. Bernard Commandary 9 Knights Temple, Hagerstown Forest 95 Tall Cedars of Lebanon in Hagerstown, Ali Gahn Shrine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. in Cumberland and Hagerstown Shrine Club.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gloria Oakman Crawford; a daughter, Sheila D. Hiteshue of Hagerstown; and two grandsons, James W. Hiteshue and Scott L. Hiteshue, both of Hagerstown.
He was preceded in death by a sister, L. Jean Shanholtz; and a stepbrother, Robert Conry.
Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Fairview Christian Church in Artemas, Pa. The Rev. Milton Morris will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by Tri-State Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., where a Masonic service will be conducted by James W. Bowers Lodge 173 A.F.&A.M. at 7 p.m. Friends may also call at the church one hour prior to services Tuesday.

Menno A. Martin
Menno A. Martin, 76, of 18519 Maugans Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 29, 1922, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late Daniel S. and Mary R. Sollenberger Martin.
His first wife, Pauline E. Lehman Martin, died in 1970.
He was a self-employed orchardist and a partner in the original Martin's Food Market on Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown. He also was the original owner and operator of Maugans Avenue Car Wash in Hagerstown from 1988 to 1993.
He was a member of Hagerstown Mennonite Fellowship Church.
He is survived by his second wife, Mary E. Burkholder Martin, whom he married Nov. 25, 1971; two daughters, Arliss M. Strite of Hagerstown and Ruby A. Strite of Bluford, Ill.; four sons, Lee E. Martin of Ear Falls, Ontario, Arvin D. Martin of Hagerstown, Dennis R. Martin of Lansing, Minn., and David L. Martin of Elida, Ohio; two sisters, Anna M. Eby of Hagerstown and Rebecca E. Lehman of Chambersburg, Pa.; three brothers, Maurice S. Martin of Hagerstown, James S. Martin of Maugansville and Silas S. Martin of LaGrande, Ore.; 26 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Hagerstown Mennonite Fellowship Church, 12403 Huyett Lane, Hagerstown. Ministers Ralph Horst, Landis Martin and Jacob Byers will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Hagerstown, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The family requests the omission of flowers.
Lawrence W. Hoffman
SMITHSBURG - Lawrence W. Hoffman, 81, of Franks Run Road, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, at his home.
Born May 18, 1917, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles and Effie Poffenberger Hoffman.
He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown for 43 years, retiring in 1983.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Greensburg, Md.
He was a member of Elks Lodge 378 in Hagerstown and AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Elsa M. Kretsinger Hoffman, whom he married April 26, 1947; twin sons, Larry P. Hoffman of San Francisco and Gary M. Hoffman of Smithsburg; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five brothers.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Julie Brigham will officiate. Burial will be in Ringgold Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Laura J. Hawbaker
Laura J. Hawbaker, 84, of 13851 Sunrise Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at Morning Glory Retirement Home, State Line, Pa.
Born July 1, 1914, in Pinola, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Howard E. and Florence Crusey Johnston.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Maugansville Bible Brethren Church in Maugansville, and taught Junior Sunday School classes in various other churches over the years.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Paul G. Hawbaker, whom she married Aug. 30, 1940; two daughters, Delores Kuhn of Westminster, Md., and Linda Healan of West Hartford, Conn.; two sons, Ronald Hawbaker of Boonsboro, and Paul E. Hawbaker of State Line; a sister, Betty Perry of Mainsville, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Maugansville Bible Brethren Church, 17904 Binkley Ave., Maugansville. The Rev. John Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa., today from 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to services Tuesday.

Frederick S. Gipe
Frederick Samuel Gipe, 63, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, at his home.
Born March 2, 1935, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of Gladys Louise Appenzellar Osborne of Hagerstown and the late Fred Bernard Gipe.
He was a member of Woodpoint Christian Chapel.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Amelia "Millie" Berry of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Elmer Gipe.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Noel L. Huffman will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
