William C. Caskey

William Clayton Caskey, 83, of 1307 Hamilton Blvd., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Homewood Nursing Center, Williamsport.

Born April 14, 1915, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry Clayton and Inez Strode Caskey.

He retired from Marquette Cement Co., Hagerstown, in 1977. He was previously employed by Potomac Edison; and Caskey Baking Co.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army with the 351st Ordnance Maintenance Co.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Josephine Caskey of Hagerstown; a daughter, Scarlett A. Michael of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; a nephew; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant son and a sister, Ruth Bishop Caskey.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. David M. Buchenroth will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Clear Spring.

Visitation will be Monday from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Washington County Free Library, 100 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

E. Lorraine Keller

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - E. Lorraine Keller, 79, formerly of 102 E. Green St., died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Homewood Retirement Center, where she had lived since 1991.

Born Nov. 5, 1918, in Brunswick, Md., she was the daughter of the late Archie and Leviah Pumphrey Moler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell R. Keller, in 1990.

She was a member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Middletown, where she was a teacher of the upper junior department of the Sunday school, and a member of the women's guild.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star in Middletown, where she also was a worthy matron.

She is survived by two sisters, Ellie Cavanaugh of Colorado and Charlotte Weet of Upper Marlboro, Md.; and two brothers, Richard Moler of Baltimore and Donald Moler of South Carolina.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Middletown. The Rev. Mark A. Wakefield will officiate. Burial will be in Reformed Cemetery, Middletown.

There will be no hours of visitation at the funeral home. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday.

Arrangements are by Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, Middletown.

Della A.S. Talbert

Della Alice "Abby" Smedley Talbert, 99, of 1183 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village, Hagerstown.

Born June 13, 1899, in Big Pool, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Mary Alice Virginia Shoemaker McLucas.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas G. Smedley; and by her second husband, John E. Talbert.

She was a supervisor at Troy Laundry for 27 years. She later was a manager at Beck Dry Cleaners. After her retirement, she was employed as a seamstress by Diamonds Boutique.

She was a member of Stonebridge Church of the Brethren, Millstone, Md.

She is survived by two daughters, Hilda E. Marks and Thomasine Kovaleski, both of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; five nieces; and 10 nephews.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Vivian Smedley and Clarice Bailey; three sisters, Ida Elizabeth Hart, Mary Ellen McLucas and Fanny L. Shoemaker; and three brothers, Johnnie Lewis McLucas Sr., Jessie Ray McLucas and Samuel Luther McLucas.

Graveside services will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Millstone (Little Cove). The Rev. James E. Swecker will officiate.

Arrangements are by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Paul M. Mossburg

FREDERICK, Md. - Paul Michael "Moose" Mossburg, 41, of 360 W. Patrick St., died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born June 7, 1957, in Frederick, he was the son of Paul W. Mossburg of Frederick and the late Doris Lackey Mossburg.

He was a 1976 graduate of Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.

He had been employed for more than 13 years with Frederick Iron and Steel.

He was a member of Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, Frederick.

He was a member and past president of Chippewa Tribe, Loyal Order of Redmen; and a member of Sons of the American Legion, FSK Post 11, Frederick.

In addition to his father, he is survived by three brothers, Blaine Phillip Mossburg of Frederick, Brian Bennett Mossburg of Walkersville, Md., and Mark Allan Ramsburg of Hagerstown; one niece; and two nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Etchison Memorial Chapel at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. Matthew P. Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, 407 Central Ave., Baltimore, Md. 21136; or Hospice of Frederick County Inc., P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, Md. 21702.

Riley Bitner Jr.

LEITERSBURG - Riley Bitner Jr., 57, of Leitersburg Pike, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.

Born Sept. 13, 1940, in St. James, he was the son of the late Riley D. and Lorette Warrenfeltz Bitner.

He was employed with United Concrete Co. in Frederick, Md., Hagerstown Block Co. and as a farmer.

He was a member of AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Fox Bitner; a son, Riley Bitner III of Leitersburg; adopted children, Lisa Bitner and Douglas Bitner, both of Hagerstown; five sisters, Ruth Smith of Fairplay, Blanche Ebersole of Maugansville, Evelyn Keebaugh of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Coqueisa Domer of Fort Myers, Fla., and Margaret Miles of Hagerstown; and four brothers, Howard Bitner and Walter Bitner, both of Leitersburg, and Joseph Bitner and Omer Bitner, both of Hedgesville, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Orville, Ray and Earl Bitner.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Wayside Baptist Church, 21303 Leiter St., Leitersburg. Pastor Odell Stone will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The viewing will be Monday one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Martha Bitner, 21314 Leitersburg Pike, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Richard I. Hammond

Richard Irvin Hammond, 85, of 21704 Black Rock Road, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 8, 1913, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Franklin L. and E. Maude Muritz Hammond.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Oneda Louise Hammond, on June 17, 1998.

He was employed as a shop supervisor with Bester and Long Inc. for 38 years.

He was a member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest 95 and Salem Lodge 196 AF & AM of Smithsburg.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara L. Hammond of Hagerstown and Nancy E. Shank of Smithsburg; three sons, Richard L. Hammond of Seattle, Donavan G. Hammond of Williamsport and Robert W. Hammond of Hagerstown; a sister, Geraldine Itnyer of Damascus, Md.; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jonathan D. Laye will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Friends and relatives may call Monday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Joseph A. Hillebert Sr.

Joseph Arthur Hillebert Sr., 82, of 6 Princeton Place, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 28, 1915, in Cattaurgus, N.Y., he was the son of the late Chester Arthur and Rita Maude Jack Hillebert.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church of Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred V. "Milly" Hillebert; two sons, Joseph A. Hillebert Jr. of Whitmore, Calif., and Gary R. Hillebert of Buchanan, Mich.; a sister, Ruth T. Corson of Stanley, Va.; a brother, Paul A. Hillebert of Takoma Park, Md.; three grandchildren; two nieces and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Frank Harrison.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Pastors James Hoffer and George Wennerberg will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The viewing will be Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of Seventh-day Adventist Church of Hagerstown, 11507 Robinwood Drive, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Frank E. Helsel

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Frank E. Helsel, of Carroll Lutheran Village, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at his home.

Born in Hollidaysburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Nellie Reinewald and Howard M. Helsel.

He was a graduate of Gettysburg College and Gettysburg Theological Seminary. His first pastorate was in Jeannette, Pa.

During World War II, he joined the armed services and was assigned to the Pacific Theater as a chaplain. He was awarded the Silver Star during World War II and the Ist Oak Leaf Cluster during the Korean War. He also was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal and Legion of Merit. He retired after 26 years of military service with the rank of colonel.

The next year, he became a pastor of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boonsboro. He spent seven years with the Boonsboro congregation.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Helsel; two daughters, Nancy Linda Davis of Frederick, Md., and Carol Diane McCaffrey of Houston; a sister, Marian E. Helsel of Frederick; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter A. Helsel.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. David G. Oravec will officiate. Entombment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Evangelical 2000 Campaign, Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 E. Church St., Frederick, Md. 21701.
