Gladys H. Nichols Hock
KNOXVILLE, Md. - Gladys Hazel Nichols Hock, 68, of Knoxville and formerly of Furnace Mountain, Md., and Lovettsville, Va., died of cancer Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998.
Born Sept. 20, 1929, in Charles Town, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James E. and Hazel Gladys Nichols.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A pianist and vocalist, she enjoyed music as well as antique furniture restoration, flower gardening, quilting, and rescuing and caring for animals.
She is survived by her husband, John Hock; five children, Carlos Myers of Leesburg, Va., Vanessa Moss of Knoxville, Timothy Moss of Frederick, Md., David Moss of Snow Hill, N.C., and Benjamin Moss of Hagerstown; a sister, Virginia Stocks of Leesburg; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Thurman Nichols, James E. Nichols and Eugene Nichols.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 199 North Place, Frederick. Bishop Leon Hewerdine will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Leesburg.
Friends and relatives may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick, Md., which will be open Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you send flowers to the loved one of your choice or donate to the charity of your choice.
Louise M. Hechinger
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Louise Mason Hechinger, 75, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at the home of her son, Russell M. Hechinger of Joyce Road, Alexandria.
Born March 3, 1923, in Pecktonville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Clarence B. and Christine Hunter Mason.
She was retired from the AFL-CIO in Washington, D.C. as assistant to longtime AFL-CIO President George Meany.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Falls Church, Va.
In addition to her son, she is survived by her husband, Russell W. Hechinger of Alexandria; a daughter, Christine A. Heneghan of Cary, N.C.; three sisters, Florence Pugh of Melbourne, Fla., Shirley Salladay of Falls Church, Va. and Eudora Knapp of Lemon Grove, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Isabelle Pettie.
A graveside service will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Parkhead Cemetery, Big Pool, Md.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

Edward L. Smallwood
DARGAN, Md. - Edward L. "Eddie" Smallwood, 77, of Dargan and formerly of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 29, 1920, in Charles Town, W.Va., he was the son of the late Henry and Irene Smallwood.
He was retired from Chessie Railroad System, Baltimore Division, formerly B & O Railroad.
He was a former city councilman and fire chief in Harpers Ferry. He was instrumental in obtaining garbage service for Harpers Ferry and later gave his business to the town.
He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany.
He was a 50-year member of Odd Fellows Virginia Lodge 1 in Harpers Ferry; American Legion Post 236 Sharpsburg; a life member of the Harpers Ferry Fire Department; and the Potomac Valley Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frances Fields Smallwood; a daughter, Donna Williams of Monroe, La.; a son, Richard L. Smallwood of Dargan; a brother, Woodrow Smallwood of Baltimore; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Diana Smallwood.
Military graveside services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Fairview Lutheran Cemetery, Bolivar, W.Va. The Rev. Roger Martin will officiate. Military services will be conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Ronald L. Snyder Sr.
Ronald Lee Snyder Sr., 60, of 909 Antietam Drive, Hagerstown, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born April 5, 1938, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Roy Samuel and Catherine Butts Snyder.
He was a 1956 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
He retired from Independent Cement Corp. in 1997, after 27 1/2 years of service. He was owner of Snyder's Antiques for 25 years.
He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He was a member of Antietam Fire Co.; scout leader of Fountaindale Elementary School and Potomac Heights School; a North Hagerstown High School Hub Band Booster; a coach in the Washington County Junior Football League, Federal Little League, Pony League and the Hagerstown Junior Basketball League. He was a member of Greencastle Sportman's Club; Williamsport Red Men Lodge 84; and a former member of Colts Corral. He was a member of United Paper Workers International Union 10038.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and woodworker.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Anita Louise Hatfield Snyder; a daughter, Kathi Jo Snyder of Hagerstown; two sons, Ronald "Rusty" Lee Snyder Jr. of Darien, Ill. and James M. Snyder of Hagerstown; a sister, Dolores Snyder of Hagerstown; a brother, Jack Snyder of Timonium, Md.; three grandchildren; and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Louise Beard.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond H. Shriver will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Infant Lesher
SMITHSBURG - The infant child of Ronnie E. and Shelley R. Henson Lesher Jr. of Smithsburg died at Washington County Hospital.
In addition to the infant's parents the child is survived by, a brother, Joshua Lesher, at home; maternal grandparents, Morris and Patsy Henson of Hagerstown; paternal grandparents, Ronald and DeEtta Lesher Sr. of Falling Waters, W.Va.; maternal great-grandfather, Alexander Henson of Hagerstown; and paternal great-grandfather, Charles Lesher Sr. of Hagerstown.
Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Georgianna F. McCarty
WINCHESTER, Va. - Georgianna Fletcher McCarty, 89, of Winchester, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at a nursing home.
Born Nov. 17, 1908, in Flint Hill, Va., she was the daughter of the late Presley Fletcher and Bessie Fletcher Flowers.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Smith Alger; her second husband, Thomas Reel; and her third husband, Lawrence McCarty.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Downsville Christian Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Betty Alger Davis of Williamsport, Anna Lou Alger Seal of Stephens City, Va., and Margaret "Peggy" Alger West and Patricia Alger Prokopovitch, both of Winchester; five sons, Walter Alger of Aleppo, Pa., Phillip Alger of Edinburg, Va., James Alger and Joseph Alger of Winchester and David Alger of Madison Heights, Va.; a sister, Margaret Starliper of Sevierville, Tenn.; two brothers, Robert Fletcher and Richard Fletcher, both of Winchester; 32 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four children, Charles Alger, Theodore Alger, Emily Alger Hawthorne and Doris Alger Baker.
Graveside services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Mount Hebron. Pastor E. Reese Davis will officiate.

Carl L. Atherton
MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Carl L. Atherton, 63, of 11098 Hunter Road, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at his home.
Born April 27, 1935, in Mercersburg, he was the son of the late C.D. and Hazel Atherton.
He attended Kasiesville School.
After his retirement, he worked for Senior Citizen Center in Greencastle, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Zeama I. Todd Atherton; three sons, Rickey E. Atherton, Dwight L. Atherton and Terry R. Atherton, all of Mercersburg; six sisters, Frances Reeder, Norma Clevenger and Vesta Fogelsonger, all of Mercersburg, Ethel Hull of Chambersburg, Pa., Mildred Youst of Clear Spring and Doris Tosten of Maryland; four brothers, Kenneth E. Atherton, Charles R. Atherton, Donald Atherton and Glen Atherton, all of Mercersburg; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Atherton; and a brother, Junior Atherton.
A memorial service will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Kasiesville Bible Church, 12639 Fort Loudon Road, Mercersburg. The Rev. James Dodge will officiate.

Myra L. Elias
BOONSBORO - Myra Leone Elias, 80, of 21055 Park Hall Road, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at her home.
Born March 6, 1918, in Racine, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Leopole and Agnes Myrup Schilling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxim M. Elias, in 1967.
She was a painter and art teacher. During the 1950s she was a protege of Dante Radice and studied with Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg, Austria, from 1954 to 1955. She headed the Georgetown Day School's art department and retired in 1975.
Her Georgetown Day School scholarship fund parties were social highlights in Washington, D.C., during the 1950s and 1960s.
She is survived by three daughters, Alix M. Elias of New York; Natasha E. Rosenbusch and Nicole E. Schmidt, both of Boonsboro; a son, Maxim K. Elias of Wolfsville, Md.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m. at her home, 21055 Park Hall Road, Boonsboro. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
