R. Hugh Beall

WILLIAMSPORT - Richard Hugh Beall, 88, of Homewood Retirement Center, and formerly of 1352 Sherman Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Homewood.

Born July 28, 1910, in Jones Spring, W.Va., he was the son of the late John William and Cora Sharff Beall.

His wife, Genevieve Marian Beall, died in 1995.

He graduated from Hedgesville (W.Va.) High School in 1926, Shepherd College in 1929, West Virginia University in 1933, and earned a master's degree in mathematics from West Virginia University in 1951.

During World War II, he was a civilian instructor of radar in the U.S. Army Air Force.

He was head of the Department of Mathematics and Engineering at Hagerstown Junior College from 1947 until his retirement in 1973.

He is survived by one daughter, Don Michele Moussa of Kansas City, Kan.; one son, Jedd W. Beall of Hagerstown; two sisters, Miriam Pitzer and Hilda Kinkead, both of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one brother, J. Wilton Beall of Martinsburg; and three granddaughters.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Odette Kilmer.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. W. Gregory Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Genevieve M. Jones

Genevieve Marie Jones, 84, formerly of 119 W. Antietam St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Center.

Born in Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Roy and Lula Downs Brant.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis C. Lucas, and by her second husband, Charles Stanley Jones.

She retired from Hagerstown Shoe Co. after 40 years of service.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son, Ronald H. Lucas of Hagerstown; one sister, Helen Wingerd of Hagerstown; one brother, Gerald E. Brant of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Darryl Zoller will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Emma K. Semler

Emma Kay Semler, 77, of 409 Liberty St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Western Maryland Hospital Center.

Born in Rockford, Ill., she was the daughter of the late John and Anna Ferraro.

She attended Sacred Heart School, Mallin Krodt Catholic and New Trier High Schools in Glencoe, Ill.

She retired from the State of Maryland Health Department in Baltimore, after 20 years of service. She was previously employed with the State of Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration for eight years, and Glen L. Martins for five years.

She was a member of Harvest Baptist Church.

She was a delegate for DMV Chapter for Maryland Classified Employees Association.

She loved to crochet and cook.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest T. "Ike" Semler; two sisters, Ida DeRose of Batavia, Ill., and Leonora Ferraro of Mount Viev, Calif.; and two brothers, Richard Ferraro of Boulder, Colo., and Gildo Ferraro of Delta, Colo.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Ferraro and John Ferraro II.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. James Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Roberta O. Smith

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Roberta "Nan" Orrison Smith, 80, of Washington, D.C., and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998.

Born in Taylorstown, Va., on Sept. 25, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Mary Jane Loye Orrison.

She was a 1936 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She is survived by a twin sister, Alberta Orrison of Nixa, Mo.; one niece; and two grandnephews.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery, Taylorstown.

Friends may call at DeVol Funeral Home, 2222 Wisconsin Ave., Northwest, Washington, D.C., today from 2 to 4 p.m.

Raymond T. McCarney

Raymond Todd McCarney, 33, of Northaven Mobile Home Park, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.

Born June 15, 1965, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Raymond S. McCarney of Chewsville and the late Joyce L. Lorshbaugh White.

In addition to his father, he is survived by one daughter, Ashley McCarney of Hagerstown; grandmother, Goldie Metz of Hagerstown; stepmother, Donna P. McCarney of Chewsville; two stepsisters, Kelli Shrader and Trutti Scott, both of Hagerstown; one stepbrother, Mark Hoffman of Hagerstown; and a friend, Patti McGurl of Hagerstown.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Glenn W.S. Humphreys

WILLIAMSPORT - Glenn W.S. Humphreys, 84, of 16505 Virginia Ave., and formerly of Albany, N.Y., and St. Petersburg, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport.

Born Aug. 17, 1914, in DuBois, Pa., he was the son of the late Glenn W.S. and Loretta Marie Brennan Humphreys.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Boyle Humphreys, on July 23, 1998.

He received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees from St. Bonaventure University, Olean, N.Y. He did postgraduate doctoral work at University of Chicago, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.

He was assistant professor at St. Rose College, Albany; professor and chairman of science and chemistry department at Siena College, Albany; and professor at State University of New York, Albany, retiring in 1975.

He was a member of St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Williamsport.

He was a member of American Chemical Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

He was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Society in Albany and Petersburg.

He was founder and regional chairman of the Northeast Region Society of St. Vincent dePaul, USA.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Anne Burke of Hagerstown; one son, Glenn W.S. Humphreys of Albany; one sister, Genevieve Aerts of St. Petersburg; two brothers, Robert Humphreys of Sun City, Fla., and William Humphreys of St. Petersburg; and four grandsons.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Humphreys.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, 32 E. Potomac St., Williamsport. The Rev. Alfred E. Smith will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Friends may call today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The funeral home will be open today after 9 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Williamsport Food Bank, P.O. Box 156, Williamsport, Md. 21795.

Milton R. Smith

WILLIAMSPORT - Milton Roosevelt Smith, 93, a resident of Homewood Retirement Center, and formerly of Bryan Place, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at the retirement center.

Born Dec. 14, 1904, in Fairplay, he was the son of the late John Henry and Ella Hayes Smith.

He owned and operated Smith Oil Co. in Hagerstown, retiring in 1972.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport.

He was a charter member of Western Maryland Sportmen's Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Laurie Reichter Smith of Williamsport; one niece, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

There will be no viewing.

Graveside services will be held at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown, at the convenience of the family. The Rev. W. Gregory Martin will officiate.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 37 W. Potomac St., Williamsport, Md. 21795.

Emma K. Semler

Emma Kay Semler, 77, of 409 Liberty St., Hagerstown, who died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ernest T. Semler.

Evelyn M. Needy

Evelyn Marie Needy, 89, of 609 Sunset Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Coffman Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 7, 1909, in Stanley, Va., she was the daughter of the late John W. and Bessie Nauman Phillips.

Her husband, William Isaac Needy Jr., died in 1977.

She was a graduate of Shenandoah (Va.) High School, and Columbia Business College, Hagerstown.

She was employed as secretary of admissions at Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, Pa.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hagerstown.

She was a member of Halfway Homemakers, and West End Senior Citizens, both in Hagerstown, and AARP.

She is survived by one daughter, Audrey Marie Baker of Funkstown; two sons, William P. Needy of Greencastle, Pa., and Robert I. Needy of King George, Va.; one sister, Mildred Phillips Switzer of Shenandoah, Va.; one brother, J. Edward Phillips of Shenandoah; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Phillips Fogle; and two brothers, William C. Phillips and Harold Phillips.

Services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Darryl Zoller will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
