Henry J. Koch Jr.

Henry Jacob Koch Jr., 86, of 411 Belview Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 24, 1911, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Henry Jacob Koch Sr. and Ida Rebman Koch.

His wife, Doris L. Brook Koch, died in 1983.

He was a 1933 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University School of Engineering.

He retired from Western Maryland Railroad after more than 30 years as a mechanical engineer.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, where he had been an elder.

He was a member of Pennsylvania State Alumni Association, Hagerstown Masonic Lodge 217 AF&AM, and a 32nd-degree member of Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Ali Ghan Temple of Cumberland, Maryland Society of Professional Engineers, Western Maryland Retired Railroaders Association, Western Maryland Railroad Historical Society, BPOE Lodge 378, and AARP, and a member and past president of the Southern Engineering Society.

He was a past member of the Pennsylvania National Guard, and City of Hagerstown Board of Public Works.

He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Koch Messinger of Leominster, Mass.; one son, Henry "Jay" Koch III of Hagerstown; one sister, Eleanor Fell of Seattle, Wash.; one granddaughter; and two grandsons.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. John W. Ailstock and the Rev. J. Russell Butcher will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

A viewing will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hagerstown Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Elsie E. Stottlemyer

Elsie Elizabeth Stottlemyer, 77, of 16863 Shinham Road, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 16, 1920, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Horace and Ella Lillian Anderson Renner.

Her husband, Albert Joseph "Alvie" Stottlemyer, died in 1993.

She was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She also was a member of E.L.C.A. Women's Group of Sharpsburg Lutheran Parish.

She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Pryor of Hagerstown; five sisters, Virginia Kline, Louise Fuller and Lorraine Walker, all of Hagerstown, Frances Norris and Anna Kunz, both of Boonsboro; one brother, Howard Renner of Keedysville; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ella Mae Staley Deavers.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Blaine E. Feightner will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 17626 Bakersville Road, Boonsboro, Md. 21713.

William E. Barthlow Jr.

MYERSVILLE, Md. - William E. "Buzz" Barthlow Jr., 56, of Myersville, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born Jan. 4, 1942, he was the son of the late William E. Barthlow Sr. and Hazel L. Brightwell Barthlow.

He was employed for 31 years by the Food and Drug Administration at National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

He was a former scoutmaster in the Wolfsville, Md., area. He hiked the length of the C&O Canal twice and the Appalachian Trail in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

He was involved with Myersville Junior Baseball and was a coach. He umpired for Myersville Junior Baseball and Myersville Mount Zion United Methodist Church baseball tournaments, and recently received a plaque of appreciation. He also umpired for Quincy-Mont Alto, Pa.-area baseball teams.

He was a member of South Mountain Rod and Gun Club, Smithsburg; Bassmasters, Hagerstown Model Railroad Museum, Western Maryland Railroad Society and K-Line Collectors Club.

He is survived by his wife, June D. Lewis Barthlow; two sons, Chris E. Barthlow Sr. and Brian E. Barthlow, both of Myersville; a sister, Frances Joan Divel of Frederick; a brother, Ray Barthlow of Frederick; a grandson; a stepgranddaughter; 12 nephews and eight nieces.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Alban Barthlow; an infant sister, Mae Elizabeth Barthlow; and a brother, Melvin T. Barthlow.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville. The Revs. Ronald A. Beverlin and James Flora will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Myersville.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Myersville Junior Baseball Association, P.O. Box 218, Myersville, Md. 21773; American Cancer Society, 1011 E. Patrick St., Frederick, Md. 21701; or Boy Scouts of America, 18600 Crestwood Drive, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

E. Jane Bowser

WILLIAMSPORT - Emma Jane Bowser, 74, of 15 N. Conococheague St., died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Oct. 24, 1923, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Virginia Conley Bowser.

She was employed as a secretary for U.S. Reps. Goodloe and Beverly Byron until her retirement. She previously was employed by Fairchild Aircraft and Brandt Cabinet Works.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport.

She was an honorary life member and current president of Potomac Post 202 American Legion Auxiliary, Williamsport; past president of Western Maryland District American Legion Auxiliary; and Department of Maryland American Legion Auxiliary; American Legion Auxiliary, Martinsburg, W.Va.; Chapter 1136 Women of the Moose, Waynesboro, Pa.; Order of the Eastern Star; Chapter 6319 Ladies Auxiliary VFW; Red Feather Council 59 Degree of Pocahontas IORM; Chapter 306 National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

She is survived by two nephews, James Bowser Jr. and Fred Bowser, both of Melbourne, Fla.; and six cousins.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James Bowser Sr.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the Albert L. Leaf Memorial Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport. The Rev. W. Gregory Martin will officiate. Private burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williamsport.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 1 to 2:45 p.m., with an American Legion Auxiliary memorial service at 2:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 37 W. Potomac St., Williamsport, Md. 21795.

William C. Tasker

William C. Tasker, 64, of 17020 Bentwood Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at his home.

Born Sept. 12, 1933, in Deer Park, Md., he was the son of the late James Edward and Ada Ruth Johnson Tasker.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was employed by AT&T for 35 years, retiring in 1991.

He attended St. Andrew's United Methodist Church.

He was a member of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42; Telephone Pioneers; and Communications Workers of America Local 2105 Retired Members Club.

He is survived by his wife, Jean E. Eversole Tasker; three daughters, Linda D. Weeks, Diane R. Kline and Susan E. Weeks, all of Hagerstown; two sons, Richard P. "Pat" Walsh of North Hollywood, Calif., and William E. Tasker of Maugansville; four sisters, Wilda Kildow, Eileen McCartney and Sheila O'Neill, all of Mountain Lake Park, Md., and Sharon Groves of San Jose, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James A. Tasker.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 1020 Maryland Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Andrew J. Cooney will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 1020 Maryland Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Patsy A. Phillips

BOONSBORO - Patsy Ann Phillips, 43, of 109 St. Paul St., died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, at Frederick Health Care Center, Frederick, Md.

Born March 13, 1955, in Ranson, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Franklin Charles and Della "Polly" Allen Phillips.

She was a former clerk at High's Store in Lovettsville, Va.

She was a Protestant.

She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1136 of Brunswick, Md.

She is survived by a daughter, Amber Nicole Phillips at home; a sister, Mary Lou Bowers of Boonsboro; a brother, Terry Franklin Phillips of Hagerstown; and three nieces.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. Carroll L. Boyer will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights Cemetery, Brownsville Heights, Md.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Francis J. Grandfield

LEBANON, Ill. - Francis Joseph Grandfield, 70, of 54 Harman Drive, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 12, 1927, in Panama City, Panama, he was the son of the late Francis J. and Marion Forestelle Grandfield.

He was a 1951 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

He had commanded the submarine the USS Remora in Hawaii. He retired in 1977 as commander with DCASR in St. Louis. He then was the financial aid director at McKendree College in Lebanon, until his retirement in 1988.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lebanon.

He is survived by his wife, Josette Ballanger Grandfield; three children, Nicole Grandfield Sheppard of Bedford, Va., Capt. Philip Wayne Grandfield of Alexandria, Va., and Denise Grandfield Brenneman of Jefferson, Va.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lynn Grandfield Bennett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at Main Chapel at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis. Burial will be on the U.S. Naval Academy grounds.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Lebanon, Ill. 66254; or Francis J. Grandfield Scholarship Fund at McKendree College, Lebanon, Ill. 66254.

Arrangements are by Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, Middletown, Md.

Anna M. Lindberg

Anna Mae Lindberg, 73, of 44 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 15, 1925, in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Moses and Bertha Mae Grube Habecker.

She is survived by her husband, Amos M. Lindberg; two daughters, Althea Rollman of Ephrata, Pa., and Angela Mae Smith of Hagerstown; four granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.

Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown.
