July 8, 2000

Lucrecia delSocorra Schmitt of Stevensville, MD.died Saturday July 8th, 2000 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. She was 41.

Born on January 18, 1959 in Managua, Nicaragua the daughter of Lucrecia Salgado Pallais and the late Manuel Pallais. She attended school at the Unan University in Nicaragua. She came to the United States in 1979 and married Charles E. Schmidt, Jr. on December 14, 1980. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1990 with a B.S. in psychology. They later moved to Maryland where she received her Teaching Certificate from the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, MD. and began working in the Queen Anne’s County School System with Queen Anne’s County High School in Centreville, MD., Kent Island High School in Stevensville, MD. and Stevensville Middle School in Stevensville, MD as a Foreign Language Teacher. She was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. and the (N.E.A.) National Education Assocation. She is survived by her husband Charles E. Schmidt, Jr. of Stevensville, MD. a daughter Carla T. Schmidt of Stevensville, MD. her mother Lucrecia Pallais of Managua, Nicaragua. A brother Manuel Pallais of Montreal, Quebec. And a sister Karla Elais of Managua, Nicaragua.

A funeral mass will be held 12 noon on Wednesday July 12, 2000 at the St. Christophers Catholic Church in Chester, MD. Family and friends may call from 3PM to 5PM and 7PM to 9PM on Tuesday July 11, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, MD. The family request that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Ave. Queenstown, MD. 21658.

Irene Elizabeth Ritzel, (89), Chester, MD., formerly of Baltimore, died Thursday July 6, 2000 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD.

Beloved wife of the late Alexander William Ritzel, mother of Dennis Ritzel and Elaine A. Rippel, grandmother of 8 and great grandmother of 3.

Funeral Mass will be held 10am Monday July 10, 2000 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. Family and Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. on Sunday July 9, 2000 from 2PM to 4Pm and 6Pm to 8PM. Interment will be in Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens in Baltimore, MD.

July 5, 2000

Josephine F. Gray, 57yrs, of Baltimore, Maryland died at Harbor Hospital in Baltimore on July 5, 2000 as a result of heart failure.

The daughter of the late Grover C & Florance E. [Joiner] Ward. She was a life long resident of the Baltimore City area. She attended and graduated from Eastern High School and went on to Baltimore City Community College where she graduated with a degree in Business. She utilized her education by working in the accounting field. She had been employed by the A-Z Loose Leaf Accounting Company of Baltimore. She left her employment in 1999 due to health problems.

Ms. Gray led a quiet family orientated life. She enjoyed doing family activities and particularly loved being with her children and grandchildren. In her spare time she loved cooking, and watching cooking shows.

Her mother, Florance Elsie Bish, and a sister, Helen H. Gears, precede Ms. Gray in death.

Two daughters, Connie Lee Smith and Michele Lynn Gray both of Baltimore, Maryland and 5 grandchildren, survive Ms. Gray.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 8th at 11 a.m. from the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Rock Hall, Maryland. A viewing will be held at the Funeral home from 7 – 9 p.m. on Friday evening, July 7th. Interment will follow Saturday’s service in the Wesley Cemetery, Rock Hall, Maryland.

Harvey Smith of Grasonville, MD died at Memorial Hospital at Easton on July 5, 2000. He was 82.

Born on September 10, 1917 in Ridgely he was the son of the late Eli and Lidey Smith. He attended school in Ridgely, MD. He married in 1947 and moved to Grasonville where he and his wife raised their four children. He served in the Army during WWII and was later honorably discharged after serving four years. He was in the construction business and self employed. He helped to build the first Bay Bridge and the first shopping center on Kent Island. Mr. Smith’s hobbies include gardening and claming. He has been known to serenade his family with his harmonica on many occasions.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rosie Ethel Smith, Two daughters: Brenda Lee David of Easton , MD and Peggy Louise Wilhelm and her husband Eric John of Grasonville, MD. Two sons: Richard Harvey Smith of Grasonville, MD and James Allan Smith of Chester, MD. A son-in-law, Four grandchildren: Cierra Wilhelm, Jason Lowery, Amber Smith and Dillon Smith. Five brothers: Eugene Smith of Denton, Elwood Smith of Stevensville, Edward Smith of Queenstown, George Smith of Centreville and Calvin Smith of Federalsburg. Three sisters: Emma Hidgon of Queenstown, Betty Clark and Frances Hammond both of Centreville. He was pre-deceased by four brothers, Albert, Henry, Sam and Eli, Jr. A sister Lula Lewis.

Funeral services will be held 11am, Saturday, July 8, 2000 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, PA. In Centreville, MD. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, July 8th one hour before service. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Easton, MD

August 31, 2000

A Funeral Liturgy for Naomi E. Dean will be celebrated on Monday, September 4, 2000 at 11:00 at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Centreville. Mrs. Dean died on Thursday, August 31, 2000. She was 79.

Born on October 12, 1920 in Centreville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Edward and Bertie Draper Ewing, Sr. She attended public school in Queen Anne County. Her husband, William Henry Dean died May 28, 1988. She was a member of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Centreville and the Queen Anne County Farm Bureau.

Mrs. Dean is survived by two daughters, Janet D. Gaban and her husband, Robert G. Gaban of Centreville and Sandy L. Sullivan and her husband, John W. Sullivan of Salisbury, MD; two sisters, Gertrude E. Richardson of Clayton, DE and Virginia Lee Fleming of Denton, MD; two brothers, Lawrence E. Ewing, Jr. of Easton and Marion C. Ewing of Chestertown; three grandchildren, Dean J. Sullivan of Salisbury, Brittany L. Gaban of Centreville and Caitlin D. Gaban of Centreville. In addition to her husband, she was pre-deceased by a sister, Mabel Ann Rhodes.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville on Sunday, September 3, 2000 from7 – 9 PM. Burial at Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville, MD. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Queen Anne, 300 Del Rhodes Avenue, Queenstown, MD 21658.

Elizabeth Louise Jones of Stevensville died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Thursday, August 31, 2000. She was 71.

Born in Spindale, NC on September 18, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Theron and Sally Lynch Ledbetter. Following high school she entered the U.S. Navy and served four years in the Korean War as a Corpsman 1st Class Petty Officer and later went to school on the GI Bill to get her nursing degree. She did her nursing training in Bellevue Hospital, New York City and later graduated from NYU in 1958.

During her career she worked at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Baltimore,MD, and was Assistant Director of the Wesleyan Nursing Center, Denton, MD from 1983 ­ 1987 and she worked as a nurse at the Detention Center, Annapolis, MD from 1987-1990 and more recently she had been a substitute teacher in Queen Anne County and had just started reading to Day Care Groups at a local day care. She was a member of the Living Water Lutheran Church, Stevensville, MD.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her husband, Forrest Jones, whom she married in 1984; two daughters, Kathy Dorsay of Durham, NC and Karen Ettien of Jacksonville, NC; a son, David Martin of Florida; four step-daughters, Valerie Wiles of Rock Hill, SC, Diane Berberich, of Waldorf, MD, Heather Harris of Stevensville and Hilary Jones of Los Angeles, CA and 7 grandchildren.. She was pre-deceased by a brother.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, September 3, 2000 at 3:00 PM at the Living Water Lutheran Church, 121 E. Main St., Stevensville, MD 21666.

Chester: Jack Y. Kochen, a long-time resident of Chester, Maryland passed away on August 31,2000 at the Chesapeake Hospice from complications associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 87.

The son of Russian immigrants, Mr. Kochen enlisted in the Navy in 1932 at the age of nineteen and served as the official Russian interpreter aboard the U.S.S. Augusta in its visit to Vladivostok following the initial U.S. recognition of the Soviet Union in 1933. During the 30’s, he was on the Yangtze Patrol aboard the U.S. Gunboat Luzon, a sister ship of the U.S.S. Panay, which was sunk in a Japanese aerial attack in 1937. One of the last men off Corregidor in 1942, he was evacuated by submarine to Australia. He was awarded the bronze star for his duty on Corregidor. He spent the remainder of the war with Naval Intelligence decoding Japanese Naval traffic.

Retired from the Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1962, Mr. Kochen continued to work in intelligence at the National Security Agency until his final retirement in 1974 after 42 years of combined military and civilian service. In 1948 he married Marion Chatterton, who also served in the Navy as a nurse from 1940 to 1949 and as a public health nurse thereafter.

She survives him as does a son, Jackson Kochen, of Ellicott City, and a daughter, Michelle Christensen of Alexandria, Virginia.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, in Chester, MD on September 5, 2000 at 9:30AM, followed by interment at Crownsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Dept. of Aging in Centreville, MD.

Charlotte Ann Tressler of Oakland, MD, formerly of Centreville died on Thursday, August 31, 2000 at her home. She was 49.

Born February 2, 1951 in Easton, MD, she was the daughter of Lottie Apple Hastings of Centreville and the late Charles Windsor Hastings, who died in 1999. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Parke W. “Pete” Tressler of Oakland, MD.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2000 at 11:00 AM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be at the East New Market Cemetery, East New Market, MD.

August 30, 2000

A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, Chester, MD for Diane Marie Weaver of Stevensville, MD on Monday, September 4, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Mrs. Weaver died on Thursday, August 30, 2000 at Stevensville, Md. She was 45.

Born July 18, 1955 in Anchorage, Alaska, she is the daughter of Bruno and Martha Kasowski Seppi of Bowie, MD. When she was 10 years old she moved to Lanham, MD and two years later moved to Bowie. She graduated from Bowie High School in 1973 and received her B.A. Degree from Salisbury State College , Salisbury, Md and her Masters Degree from the University of Maryland. On July 1, 1977 she married Daniel Cleveland Weaver.

She began her teaching career at the Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in Easton, MD, where she taught for 13 years. She left teaching for about 10 years to raise her family and I 1999 she returned to teaching as a 5th grade teacher at the Bay Side Elementary School in Stevensville, where she was employed at the time of her death.

Mrs. Weaver was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, Chester, a member of the Maryland State Teachers Union, was a Girl Scout Troop Leader for Troop #1423 in Stevensville and was very active in her children’s P.T.A.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Weaver is survived by three children, Dawn Ashley Weaver, Denise Christine Weaver and Daniel Anthony Weaver, all of Stevensville; eight brothers and sisters, Bruno “Rocky” Seppi, Howard Seppi, Marilyn Seppi and Tino Seppi, all of Bowie, MD; Timothy Seppi of Chester, MD; Valerie Sedwick of Stevensville, MD; Perry Seppi of Davidsonville, MD and Gary Seppi of Riva, MD.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chester, MD on Sunday, September 3, 2000 from 3:00-5:00 and 7:00 – 9:00. Burial will be private at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Diane Weaver Memorial.

August 27, 2000

Marion James Hammer of Chestertown, Md. died at Magnolia Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, Md. on August 27, 2000. He was 74.

He was born in Centreville, Md. on Sept. 25, 1925, the son of the late Alfred Marion James Hammer of Chestertown, Md. died at Magnolia Hall and Lillian Rhodes Hammer. He is the husband of Nancy Usilton Hammer whom he married in 1952. Mr. Hammer attended Church Hill High School and in 1946 enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in Food Service for 22 years and was honorably discharged in 1968 as Master Sergeant. Mr. Hammer then went to work with Maryland State Roads and retired from there in 1985. He was a member of Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post #36 in Chestertown, Md.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son: James Gary Hammer of Nanticoke, Md.; a daughter: Pamela K. Hammer of California, Md.; a sister: Louise H. Jester of Chester, Pa.; and a brother: Bernard L. Hammer of Centreville, Md.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday August 31,2000 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock, Md. Interment will be in the adjacent cemetery. For directions call the cemetery office at 410-943-3420 or the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Kent and Queen Anne's Rescue Squad P.O. Box 126 Chestertown, Md. 21620 or to the Chestertown Vol. Fire Dept. P.O. Box 296 Chestertown, Md. 21620.

August 26, 2000

Ruth Voelker Chirumbole of Chester, MD. Died Saturday August 26, 2000 at her son’s home in Chester, MD. She was 85.

Born on January 9, 1915 in Pittsburgh, PA. she was the daughter of the late Alloys Voelker and Ida Moeller. She was a graduate of Bellevue High School Class of 1933. Married Nicholas R. Chirumbole on July 15, 1941. Mrs. Chirumbole was homemaker and resided in Pittsburgh, PA. Until 1952 moving to Baltimore, MD and returning to Pittsburgh, PA. in 1965. Upon her husbands retirement in 1977 they moved to Chester, MD.

She was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD.

She is survived by two sons Robert Chirumbole of Pasadena, MD. and Richard Chirumbole of Chester, MD. a daughter Judith C. Mudd of La Plata, MD. two brothers Thomas Voelker of Bellevue, PA. and Robert Voelker of Long Beach, CA. (6) grandchildren and (5) great grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her on April 15, 1999 & Three sisters Dorothy Sokol, Mary Treon & Mildred Voelker all predeceased her.

Funeral mass will be held 3PM on Wednesday August 29, 2000 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. Family and friends may call on Wednesday August 29, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD. from 1PM to 2:45PM Interment will be in St. Peter’s Church Cemetery in Queenstown, MD.
