Jesse A. Alger

GAPLAND - Jesse Allen Alger, 77, of 3214 Gapland Road, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born May 26, 1921, in Ranson, W.Va., he was the son of the late Hubert and Lora Burner Alger.

He retired in 1983 after 23 years with the General Services Administration, Washington, D.C.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a member of Charles Town Baptist Church. He attended Burkittsville Lutheran Church.

He was a member of Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion in Boonsboro; W.D. Byron Post 1936 VFW, Hagerstown; and AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Regina E. Bealer Alger, whom he married on Nov. 26, 1960; one daughter, Rebecca Briggs of Charles Town, W.Va.; one son, Jesse A. Alger Jr. of Charles Town; two sisters, Yvonne Drewry of Green Valley, Ariz., and Anice Darroch of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one brother, Leslie Alger of Charles Town; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. George M. Harpel will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Beverly C.T. Everly

FREDERICK, Md. - Beverly C. Treaster Everly, 62, of Catoctin Avenue, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born Jan. 22, 1936, in Milroy, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Carrie Lee Reed Treaster.

She was employed by the Frederick County Board of Education, working in the cafeteria at Frederick High School for nearly 15 years.

She was a member of Frederick Church of the Brethren.

She was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

She sewed, cooked and played the piano.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, David E. Everly; two daughters, Vicky E. Bonner of Keedysville and Brenda K. Jones of Frederick; one son, R. Bruce Everly of Denver; two sisters, Joyce Gantz and Leona Wagner, both of Milroy, Pa.; two brothers, Richard Treaster of Douglasville, Ga., and Edgar Allen Treaster of Centre Hall, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Pastor Wendell McClellan will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society, Frederick County Chapter, 15 E. Main St., Westminster, Md. 21157.

Lillian S. Hendershot Spalding

WILLIAMSPORT - Lillian S. Hendershot Spalding, 85, of 16812 Tammany Manor Drive, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Homewood Nursing Home, Williamsport.

Born Feb. 28, 1913, in Greenridge, Md., she was the daughter of the late David and Harriett Twigg Snyder.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Hendershot, in 1951; and by her second husband, William Norman Spalding Sr., in 1994.

She retired after many years as a cook at Homewood Retirement Center.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by three daughters, Joann Fields and Bobbie Buskirk, both of Greencastle, Pa., and Lois Fisher Myers of Hagerstown; one son, David Hendershot of Marlowe, W.Va.; one stepson, William Spalding Jr. of San Diego; one sister, Gladys Roy of Cumberland, Md.; one brother, Stanley Snyder of Little Orleans, Md.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Effie Hebb and Dorothy Kesler; and six brothers, James Snyder, Albert Snyder, Eugene Snyder, John Snyder, David Snyder and Leonard Snyder.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble will officiate. Burial will be in Madley Cemetery, Madley, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Lillie L. Divelbliss

BOONSBORO - Lillie Lucille Divelbliss, 84, a resident of Charlotte's Home, 212 Maple Ave., Boonsboro, and formerly of Dunn Irvin Drive, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Center, Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 11, 1914, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Markie Olin and Nellie Louise Shafer Rutherford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence G. Divelbliss, in 1984.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son, Carl W. Rutherford of Hagerstown; one sister, Edna Jennings of Baltimore; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Maryetta Rice, Margarette Henninger and Louise Osborne; and one brother, Clinton Rutherford.

Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Harry G. Miller

Harry Gochenour Miller, 75, of 11240 Greenmount Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 6, 1922, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Elizabeth M. Gochenour Miller.

He was a graduate of McCaskey High School, Lancaster, Pa.; Hagerstown Junior College and the University of Maryland with a master's equivalent in electronics.

He was a licensed broadcast engineer with radio station WJEJ AM/FM and an announcer. He was a licensed amateur radio operator with call letters K3NZN.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in April 1943. He served in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He retired with the rank of colonel in December 1976 after 34 years active and reserve service. His last assignment was with the Selective Service System.

He retired from the Washington County Board of Education after 23 years as an electronics teacher. He taught at South Hagerstown High School, Vo-Tech Center, Career Studies Center and Hagerstown Junior College.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.

He was a member of Washington County Retired Teachers Association; a life member of Reserve Officers Association; member of Retired Officers Association; and USA Signal Corps OCS Association.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Crilley Miller; one daughter, Carol Ann Miller of Hagerstown; and cousins.

Private graveside services will be Wednesday at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. Edward H. Heim will officiate.

Friends may call today from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

Sidney S. Metzner

MYERSVILLE, Md. - Sidney Samuel Metzner, 72, of Harmony Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at his home.

Born May 17, 1926, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Jack and Lillian Cherry Metzner.

He was a graduate of Central High School, Philadelphia. He received a bachelor of science in commerce and engineering from Drexel Institute of Technology. He received his master's in business administration from George Washington University, and had completed the doctoral curriculum in business administration at George Washington University.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served with the 69th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions in the Battle of Arden Forest.

He was a member and past president of B'nai Abraham Congregation of Hagerstown.

He was co-founder of Conservit Inc.; and was chairman of the board.

He was a member of a state commission advising the state on the problem of abandoned vehicles.

He was a member of Fighting 69th Association; Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries; and was on a variety of committees; American Iron and Steel Institute, and was director of the Metal Scrap Research and Educational Foundation.

He was past president of Hagerstown Junior Basketball League; and had served on the boards of the Salvation Army, The Maryland Theatre, and First Federal Savings and Loan Association.

He was an adjunct assistant professor of the graduate school of Frostburg State University; and adjunct assistant professor of economics of the University of Baltimore.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne R. Metzner, whom he married March 23, 1947; a daughter, Carol Ann Metzner of Germantown, Md.; four sons, Stephen Elliott Metzner and Lewis Craig Metzner, both of Hagerstown, Jeffrey Lee Metzner of Englewood, Colo., and Jack Eric Metzner, of Myersville, Md.; a sister, Gloria Schwartz of Agoura, Calif.; a brother, Stoney Metzner of Tempe, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and two nieces.

Services will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Rabbi Janice Garfunkle will officiate. Burial will be in B'nai Abraham Cemetery.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Charlotte L. Fales

KEEDYSVILLE - Charlotte Lorraine Fales, 64, of 4731 Mount Briar Road, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at her home.

Born Jan. 16, 1934, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Daniel G. and Theresa L. Zimmerly Mumma.

She formerly was employed as a nursing assistant at Washington County Hospital; and had provided private home care.

She was a member of Mount Briar Church of God.

She had been a volunteer with Boonsboro Volunteer Fire Co.

She is survived by her husband, Neil L. Fales, whom she married Nov. 4, 1951; a daughter, Noreen L. Haupt of Boonsboro; two sons, Scott C. Fales of Stafford, Va., and Curt N. Fales of Boonsboro; a sister, Audrey Morris; four brothers, George Mumma, Hubert Mumma, Lawrence Mumma and Layman Mumma; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six sisters and five brothers.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Joseph C. Burdette Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where friends may call today any time after 11 a.m.

Hubert B. Guessford

Hubert Bradley Guessford, 74, of 1014 Jefferson Blvd., died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at his home.

Born Jan. 21, 1924, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Minerva Myers Guessford.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Louise Guessford, in 1992.

He was employed by Hagerstown City Light for 15 years. He earlier was employed at the Maryland Correctional Institution as a guard for 25 years.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in World War II.

He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

He was a member of American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42.

He is survived by a friend, Ruth Spurdens of Hagerstown.

Graveside services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Rose Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Lauren Lay will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. Hagerstown.
