Miriam L. Newman
SMITHSBURG - Miriam L. Newman, 80, of West Water Street, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at her home.
Born Nov. 7, 1917, near Smithsburg, she was the daughter of the late Frank W. and Mary A. Hershey Stouffer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard P. Newman, in 1986.
She was employed with Doubleday Co. in Smithsburg, retiring in 1979.
She was a member of Christ's Reformed Church in Hagerstown.
She was a member of Washington County Temperance Union, serving as secretary and treasurer.
She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Alter of Waynesboro, Pa., and Emma Dunn of Maxton, N.C.; two brothers, Paul H. Stouffer of Waynesboro and John W. Stouffer of Smithsburg; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be Thursday at 8 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., in Smithsburg. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ's Reformed Church, 130 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
Patrick J. Soroko
Memorial services for Patrick James Soroko, 41, of Hagerstown, who died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, will be held Thursday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at Maple Tree Campground, 20716 Townsend Road, Gapland, Md. Philip Soroko will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Robert H. Kershner
OCEAN PINES, Md. - Robert H. Kershner, 77, of Ocean Pines, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at his home.
He was the son of the late Robert H. and Mildred M. Kershner.
He was a 1939 graduate of Martinsburg High School; and attended Shepherd College.
He retired as a machinist from Crown Cork and Seal, Baltimore.
He was a member of the Elks Club.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor T. Kershner; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Rawl of Bradshaw, Md., and Susan Reid of Birmingham, Md.; two sons, Robert L. Kershner of Ellicott City, Md., and Thomas H. Kershner of Ocean Pines; a brother, Rex E. Kershner of Ocean Pines; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be today at 11 a.m. at Community Church, Ocean Pines. Dr. P. Thomas McKelvey will officiate.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at New Norborne Cemetery, Martinsburg, W.Va. The Rev. Paul L. Flick will officiate.
Local arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
Franklin D. Russ Sr.
Franklin D. Russ Sr., 61, of 606 N. Prospect St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 7, 1937, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William M. and Eva Williams Russ.
He retired from Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1994, after 30 years. He also worked at the Alexander Hotel and Fountain Head Country Club.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda Jefferson Russ; one daughter, Marcelle Y. Russ of Hagerstown; three sons, Franklin D. Russ Jr., Rudolph T. Russ III, and Donald F. Russ, all of Hagerstown; two sisters, Beatrice Young and Margaret Barnett, both of Hagerstown; four brothers, Roy Russ, James Russ, Kenneth Russ and Rudolph T. Russ II, all of Hagerstown; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Temple Apostolic Church, 346 N. Jonathan St., Hagerstown. Fred McCoy, district elder, will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service.
Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.
Leonard Fehlauer
WILLIAMSPORT - Leonard Fehlauer, 95, of Williamsport Retirement Village, and formerly of Baltimore, Joppatown, Md., and 1647 Woodlands Run Road in Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998.
Born March 2, 1903, in Germany, he was the son of the late Rudolph and Ernstina Hein Fehlauer.
He graduated from Essex grade school and attended Sparrows Point High School. He graduated from Baltimore Business College.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He joined the Baltimore City Police Department in 1929, and retired as a lieutenant after 20 years.
While an officer, he earned his GED at the University of Baltimore, and graduated from the University of Baltimore with a law degree. He was a member of the Maryland bar. He practiced general law for 20 years.
He was director of the Baltimore Police Academy and directed Baltimore City Police Pistol Team. He was a graduate of the FBI Academy.
He was a member and past president of Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, and was lieutenant governor for Kiwanis International in 1956. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Baltimore Boumi Temple. He was a member of Baltimore Yacht Club and was parliamentarian for Sue Island Power Squadron.
He and his wife were accomplished ballroom dancers.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Linda Griesbach Fehlauer; a son, Kenneth Fehlauer of Hagerstown; two grandsons, Steven K. Fehlauer of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Jeffery G. Fehlauer of Hagerstown; and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Ruck Funeral Home, 1050 York Road, Towson, Md. Burial will be in Dulany Valley Cemetery, Towson.
The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ella D. Hart
Ella Davis Hart, 84, of 321 Henry Ave., Hagerstown, who died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, is survived by one granddaughter.
William A. Grimes
William A. Grimes, 65, of 20423 Jefferson Blvd., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at his home.
Born Oct. 20, 1932, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late William E. and Frances V. Crawford Grimes.
A supervisor at Independent Cement, he retired in 1996 after 27 years.
He was a member of St. Peter's (Beard's) Lutheran Church, Old Forge Road, Hagerstown.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was a member of North American Rod and Gun Club; L.O.O.M. Lodge 1191 Waynesboro; AARP Hagerstown Chapter 623; National AARP; and Potomac Post 202 American Legion, Williamsport.
He is survived by his wife, Frances E. Nally Grimes; a son, Richard D. Vincent of Williamsport; four sisters, Ellen L. Foote of Brevard, N.C., Beverly J. Taylor of Clear Spring, Laura A. Bowers and Garnetta G. Shillingburg, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Samuel H. Grimes of Hagerstown and James E. Grimes of Clear Spring; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, William E. Grimes III; and a brother, Donald Lee Grimes.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. R. Terry Foor and the Rev. Richard A. Daughtridge will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Walter E. Baker
Walter Edward "Peach" Baker, 84, of 433 Salem Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at the Veterans Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Dec. 2, 1913, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Albert and Julia D. Warner Baker.
He was retired from Eastern Products, and previously was employed by Porter Chemical, Fairchild Aircraft and Southern Shoe Co. for 30 years.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the European Theater during World War II.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 1936, AMVETS Post 10 and Western Enterprise Fire Co.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth J. Shry Baker; one sister, Betty Weller of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Ralph M. "Sam" Baker of St. James; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Sellers; two sisters, Louise Metz and Hazel Ecton; and five brothers, Robert L. Baker, Jack L. Baker, George O. Baker, Leroy Baker and Charles Melvin Baker.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Raymond L. Shriver will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Hubert B. Guessford
Hubert Bradley Guessford, 74, of 1014 Jefferson Blvd., who died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, is survived by two half sisters, Catherine Garling of Hagerstown and Lula Mae Griffith of Florida; and a half brother, Leroy Myers of Elkton, Md.
Alton C. Powell
THURMONT, Md. - Alton Clay Powell, 71, of 10630 Powell Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, Md.
Born Dec. 14, 1926, in Lewistown, Md., he was the son of the late Alton Parker and Marie Catherine Lohr Powell.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Florence McGraw.
He was a 1946 graduate of Frederick High School.
He was a member of Lewistown United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Edwin C. Creeger American Legion Post 168; Thurmont Senior Citizens; Catoctin Canaries; Korean Veterans Organization Chapter 142 of Frederick, and a former member of Lewistown Ruritan.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Rose Marie Williar Powell; one daughter, Bonnie S. Frey of Middletown, Md.; three sons, Carroll A. Powell of Thurmont, Donald A. Powell Sr. of Fairfield, Pa., and Ronald C. Powell of Frederick; one brother, Kenneth Hamilton Powell; 10 grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lewistown United Methodist Church, 11032 Hessong Bridge Road. The Rev. Susan E. Boehl will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick.
The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
