Catherine I. Blair
Catherine Irene "Kitty" Blair, 69, of 17616 Burnside Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at her home.
Born Dec. 21, 1928, in Chewsville, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Lee and Katherine Warden Guessford.
She previously was employed by Robert Hall Clothing, and J. C. Penney's.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
She was a member of AARP; and American Legion Funkstown Post 211 Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Edward L. Blair; three daughters, Patricia Nichols of Daytona Beach, Fla., Diana Connell of Hagerstown and Kathleen Herrell of LaVale, Md.; a son, Ronald Blair of Hagerstown; two brothers, Samuel Guessford of Sharpsburg and Robert Guessford of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Blair.
Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Charlotte L. Boward
Charlotte L. Boward, 75, of 1090 Marshall St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 23, 1922, in Charles Town, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Martin and Myrtle Symons Kelly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Boward, in 1996.
She was a retired employee of Bon Ton Department Store.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Donald B. Boward of Greencastle, Pa.; a sister, Kathryn Ebersole of Hagerstown; a brother, Eugene Kelly of Hagerstown; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Merle F. "Lucky" Boward.
Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Darryl Zoller will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
William A. Devine
William A. Devine, 82, of 26 Garlinger Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 10, 1915, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late William P. and Mary A. Cleary Devine.
He was a bookkeeper for Miller Furniture Co.; and retired from Western Maryland Hospital Center.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Europe and was in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He was a member of VFW William D. Byron Post 1936.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine B. Kretzer Devine; four daughters, Catherine J. Gordon of Hanover, Pa., Joan C. Wilson and Mary A. Miller, both of Hagerstown, and Patricia A. Flynn of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a son, James M. Devine of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James M. Devine.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
There will be no viewing.
Edward L. Saum
AIKEN, S.C. - Edward L. Saum, 75, of 344 Outback Way, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
He was the son of the late John Lester and Mattie Middlecamp Saum.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Jean Newell Saum.
He is survived by a daughter, Sherry June Christensen of Aiken; two sons, Richard Lee Saum and David Allen Saum, both of Trenton, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Shirley Jean Aumock of Frametown, W.Va.; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Saum and Vivian Saum; and three brothers, Jack Saum, John Saum and George Saum.
Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel, 924 Hayne Ave., Aiken. The Rev. Kenneth Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery.
The family received friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

James A. Cottingham
WALKERSVILLE, Md. - James A. Cottingham, 71, of Walkersville, died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at the home of his son, John Cottingham, in Columbia, S.C.
Born March 9, 1927, in Randallstown, Md., he was the son of the late William O. and Mavis Jones Cottingham.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II.
Prior to working in the retail car business, he was chief of operations of Robert Ritchie's Investors Loan Co. of Frederick, Md.
He was a member of Tall Cedars.
He is survived by four children, John Cottingham of Columbia, Dee Cottingham of Frederick, Jim Cottingham of Baltimore and Janice Murray of Walkersville; a sister, Ruth Newey of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; two brothers, John Cottingham of Lancaster, Pa., and Jack Berger of Clear Spring; and 11 grandchildren.

Richard L. Hoffman Sr.
FREDERICK, Md. - Richard Lewis "Dick" Hoffman Sr., 73, of 5776 Old National Pike, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 8, 1924, in Doubs, Md., he was the son of the late Lewis N. and Mary R. Zimmerman Hoffman.
He was employed as a scalemaster at Alpha Portland Cement Co. until his retirement.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.
He was a member of American Legion, AMVETS and Fraternal Order of Eagles, all of Frederick.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Elizabeth Summers Hoffman; four children, Richard L. Hoffman Jr. of Braddock, Md., Mary A. King of Boonsboro, George R. Hoffman of Emmitsburg, Md., and Jerry W. Hoffman of Frederick; a sister, Margaret Mike of Washington, D.C.; four brothers, Nelson L. Hoffman and Lloyd H. Hoffman, both of Frederick, Roscoe D. Hoffman of Tampa, Fla., and Donald L. Hoffman of Charles Town, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, Md. The Rev. George M. Harpel, pastor of Braddock Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
Friends may call today from noon to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Daniel J. Rogalski
SMITHSBURG - Daniel Joseph Rogalski, infant son of George Joseph and Constance Marie Ziz Rogalski of 24035 Mong Road, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.
He was born Sept. 3, 1998, in Waynesboro.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandmother, Frances Ziz; paternal grandmother, Patricia Ann Rogalski of Tampa, Fla.; and paternal grandfather, Richard Joseph Rogalski of Northampton, Mass.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are by Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
Basil V. Skaggs
Basil Vernon Skaggs, 79, of Walnut Towers, Hagerstown, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Ansted, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Wesley and Lula A. Brown Skaggs.
He was employed with Eastern Products for seven years.
He attended Church of God on Linganore Avenue, Hagerstown.
He is survived by his former wife, Jessie E. Skaggs of Carlisle, Pa.; a daughter, Alberta Champagne of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be today at 11 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Lucille Marquiss will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

Dorsey M. Burdette
FREDERICK, Md. - Dorsey Martin Burdette, 86, of 7617 Old Receiver Road, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at his home.
Born April 22, 1912, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Charles C. and Bertha Elizabeth Sulcer Burdette.
He retired as a carpenter, from Washington Carpenters District Council Local 132, of which he had been a member for 41 years. Later, he and his son, Richard, built many homes in the Frederick area.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Edgewood First Church of God and the Men's Bible Class.
He was a member of United Civic Association of Shookstown, Md., Rocky Springs, Md., and Edgewood, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Schultz Burdette, whom he married Sept. 6, 1940; a daughter, Sandra J. Burdette of Frederick; two sons, Richard A. Burdette and the Rev. Joseph C. Burdette Sr., both of Frederick; two brothers, Austin J. Burdette of San Diego and Lewis C. Burdette of Middletown, Md.; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian C. Miss and Virginia Hiltner; and four brothers, Vernon, Foster, Melvin and Grayson Burdette.
Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Edgewood First Church of God, Frederick. The Rev. Duanne L. Beck, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
The family will receive friends Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Charlotte L. Boward, 75, of 1090 Marshall St., Hagerstown, who died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, was preceded in death by a sister, Hilda D. Galliher; and a brother, Martin Kelly.
Arthur C. Bachtell Sr.
CLEAR SPRING - Arthur Cecil Bachtell Sr., 55, of 15033 Hicksville Road, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 28, 1942, in Cavetown, he was the son of the late Arthur K. and Helen Stottlemyer Bachtell.
He entertained professionally for many years.
He was a member of Ringgold Church of Christ.
He was a Little League manager from 1979 to 1985 for the Smithsburg Little Sluggers.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Bachtell; two daughters, Rebecca D. Beall and Deborah A. Kindle, both of Smithsburg; three sons, Arthur C. Bachtell Jr. of Maugansville, and Jeffrey L. Bachtell and William A. Bachtell, both of Hagerstown; a sister, Saundra Gardner of Smithsburg; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Minister Bryan Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
Viewing will be Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
