Anthony J. Rudez Jr.

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Anthony John "Tony" Rudez Jr., 49, of 7008 Willowtree Drive, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at his home.

Born May 28, 1949, in Clairton, Pa., he was the son of Anthony John and Rose Marie Ward Rudez Sr. of Clairton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadette F. Rudez, in 1996.

He was a graduate of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

He was employed as assistant comptroller with the Department of Commerce in Gaithersburg, Md.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Community, Middletown.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Anthony John Rudez III of Middletown; a sister, Christine E. Martini of Clairton; and a brother, Richard W. Rudez of Bel Air, Md.

Services will be private. The Rev. John C. Moore, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church, Middletown, will officiate. Burial will be in Reformed Cemetery, Middletown.

The family will receive friends today from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Memorial donations may be made to Holy Family Catholic Community Church, 7321 Burkittsville Road, Middletown, Md. 21769.

Mary M. Sowers

Mary Margaret Sowers, 90, formerly of 11403 Stonecroft Court, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Home.

Born Oct. 7, 1907, in Rochester, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Winfield Scott and Nellie Denniston Sowers.

She was a graduate of Rochester High School. She attended Methodist Missionary Training School. She then was associated with Church of God (Universal). She graduated from Anderson Theological Seminary in Indiana with a bachelor of theology degree.

She served as full-time pastor, youth camp director and field evangelist for the Montrose Church of God. She did printing and office work in the Way of Truth and served in various fields until she accepted the pastorate at Ripley Church of God in West Virginia. She later accepted service in the Hagerstown Way of Truth. She also was a full-time teacher for Truth for Youth School and a substitute teacher for Washington County Public Schools. She then went to Durbin, W.Va., as pastor of the Church of God, where she served until her retirement.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and a friend, David Allen Mills.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Jean Stover, Sowell Cann and Narcissus "Nar" Sowers; and a brother, W.H. Sowers.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Pastor Henry Marquiss will officiate. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday one hour prior to services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Robinwood Church of God, 12030 Warrenfeltz Lane, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Esther F.R. Boyer

Esther F. Ravenscraft Boyer, 54, of Hagerstown, and formerly of Farmington, Pa., died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 24, 1943, in Farmington, Pa., she was the daughter of Esther F. Ravenscraft of High House, Pa., and the late Walter Ravenscraft.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, David Boyer; a daughter, Marla Neisser of Hagerstown; three sons, David Boyer Jr. of Mercersburg, Pa., Monte Boyer of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Brian Boyer at home; two sisters, Patty Osborne and Deborah Ravenscraft, both of High House; two brothers, Roy Ravenscraft of Hagerstown and Thomas Ravenscraft of Masontown, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Fairchance Pentecostal Church, Fairchance, Pa. The Rev. Daniel DeFrank will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset View Cemetery, Chalk Hill, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the church Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Arrangements are by Goldsboro-Tomi Funeral Home, Fairchance.

Charles L. Van Haelen

RICHMOND, Va. - Charles Lewis Van Haelen, 96, of Richmond, and formerly of Charles Town, W.Va., died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, in Richmond.

He was born in New York City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred C. Marshall Van Haelen, in 1991.

He was a 1923 graduate of Yale University.

He was a former member and elder of Charles Town Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Joan Everett of Richmond; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown, W.Va. The Rev. William Everhart will officiate.

Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.

James K. Carter

James Kenneth Carter, 77, of 1207 Frederick St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 3, 1921, in Yarrowsburg, he was the son of the late James Howard and Ellen Naomi Himes Carter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen Carter, in 1981.

He was a graduate of Boonsboro High School.

He retired from Pangborn Corp. after 27 years. He previously was employed by B&O Railroad.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Euro-African Theater.

He was a member of American Legion Funkstown Post 211.

He is survived by three daughters, Carole Kline and Lana Durboraw, both of Hagerstown, and Maria Zeller of Williamsport; a son, Shane Carter of Hagerstown; a sister, Shirley Barnhouse of Yarrowsburg; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Alton Carter.

Graveside services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m.

Elmer E. Nicodemus

Elmer Evers "Scoop" Nicodemus, 71, of 10913 Rosewood Drive, Hagerstown, and a resident of Ravenwood Nursing Home, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 5, 1927, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late William and Anna Mae Huntzberry Nicodemus.

He was employed by Fort Ritchie Commissary for 27 years, retiring in 1989.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in Germany.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown.

He was a member of Moose Lodge 2462 of Williamsport; American Legion Funkstown Post 211; VFW Post 1936; Red Men Conococheague Tribe 84; Federal Employee Union 1153; AMVETS Post 10; and AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Nicodemus; three sons, Richard Nicodemus of Alabama, Robert Nicodemus and Keith Nicodemus, both of Hagerstown; a brother, Gerald Nicodemus of Hagerstown; three stepdaughters, Christy Karn, Kathy Moore and Ann Bond, all of Hagerstown; two stepsons, Gilbert Shumaker and Tony Shumaker, both of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a nephew.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Darrell L. Layman will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown. Graveside military services will be conducted by American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Marvin R. Munch

Marvin Richard Munch, 81, of 11210 Greenberry Road, Hagerstown, who died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, traveled in all states but three.

Thomas V. Durboraw

Thomas Victor Durboraw, 45, of 1207 Frederick St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at his home.

Born in Washington County, he was the son of Raymond M. Durboraw Sr. of Williamsport and the late Rebecca J. McElroy Durboraw.

He was a self-employed automobile body technician.

He was a Protestant.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Lana C. Carter Durboraw; a daughter, Chasity Gronados of Springlake, Ark.; a stepson, Troy A. Carter of Hagerstown; two brothers, Paul A. Durboraw of West Virginia and Raymond M. "Pete" Durboraw Jr. of Virginia; and three grandchildren.

Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Mary I. Royce

Mary I. Royce, 93, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, who died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, is survived by a brother, Gilbert H. Myers of Knoxville, Tenn.

Edith A. Cauley

HOT SPRINGS, Va. - Edith Miriam Armentrout Cauley, 88, of Box 157, and a resident of The Springs Nursing Home, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at the home.

Born May 8, 1910, in Harrisonburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Richard Emory and Elsie Irene Bowman Armentrout.

She received a teaching certificate from New York City Conservatory of Music and Arts in 1927.

She taught piano for 50 years, including more than 20 years in Hagerstown.

She was a member and elder of Milboro Presbyterian Church, where she had been choir director and pianist for 20 years.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert Alston Cauley, whom she married July 23, 1938; and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Smith.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at West Augusta Cemetery, West Augusta, Va. The Revs. John Haney and Otis Fisher will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Bear Funeral Home, Churchville, Va., on Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Lisle H. Gehr

Lisle Hastings Gehr, 81, of 17740 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at Homewood Nursing Home, Williamsport.

Born Nov. 28, 1916, in Big Pool, he was the son of the late Ralph Raymond and Rachael Ann Shank Gehr.

He was employed by Greyhound Bus Lines, retiring in 1973. He was the former owner of Gehr's Hardware in Clear Spring and Gehr's Greenhouse in Maugansville.

He was a Protestant.

He was a member of United Commercial Travelers and AFL-CIO C.T.C.

He is survived by his wife, Helen J. Gehr; a son, Donald L. Gehr of Hagerstown; two sisters, Loie Sheffer and Katherine Shellenberger, both of York, Pa.; four brothers, Alonza D. Gehr of Florida, Walter L. Gehr of Whiteford, Md., J. Clifford Gehr of York and Ralph N. Gehr of Big Pool; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva "Billie" Mohler; and a brother, Orville E. Gehr.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Donald Moul will officiate. Burial will be in Shanktown Cemetery, Big Pool.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Church of the Holy Trinity, 17805 Oak Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
