Elmer L. Myers

Elmer Leroy Myers, major, U.S. Army, retired, 79, of 434 Stratford Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 19, 1919, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Leroy and Maggie Mae Weyant Myers.

He joined the Maryland National Guard, Co. B, 115th In., 29th Div. in 1939. In 1941, he was commissioned a second lieutenant. During World War II, he served in the European Theater, where he received the Purple Heart. In 1944, he was captured by the Germans. He escaped to Poland and was liberated to the Russian Red Army and sent to Moscow.

Following World War II, he was an Army recruiter in South Korea and elsewhere. He retired in 1964 from the 35th Artillery Brigade at Fort George G. Meade, Md. Following his retirement, he volunteered with the American Red Cross.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hagerstown.

He was a member of Morris-Frock Post 42 American Legion in Hagerstown, Korean Veteran's Last Man's Club, and the Forty and Eight Club.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma June Lynn Myers, whom he married Jan. 5, 1946; two daughters, Lynette S. Carobrese of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Cindy L. Streets of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; a son, Rodney L. Myers of Salisbury, Md.; two sisters, Hilda Rozier of Hagerstown and Ruth Miller of Waynesboro, Pa.; two brothers, Bernard Myers of Myersville, Md., and Calvin Myers of New York; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, David Myers, Jennings Myers and Harry Myers.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors by Morris-Frock Post 42 American Legion.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Marvin R. Munch

Memorial donations for Marvin Richard Munch, 81, of 11210 Greenberry Road, Hagerstown, who died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, may be made to Hagerstown Grace Brethren Church Missions, 837 Spruce St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Edith A. Cauley

HOT SPRINGS, Va. - Edith Miriam Armentrout Cauley, 88, of Box 157, and a resident of The Springs Nursing Home, who died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, is survived by her husband, Herman A. Cauley, of Box 157, Millboro, Va.

S. Katherine Beard

S. Katherine Beard, 70, of 124 Wayside Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Western Maryland Hospital Center, Hagerstown.

Born July 18, 1928, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Luther E. and Della M. Tabler Palmer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph L. Beard Jr., in 1997.

She had worked for Hagerstown Surgical Clinic; Richard Lauricella; and Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home.

She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, where she was a member of United Methodist Women; Sterling-Bell Class; and Sanctuary Choir.

She is survived by a son, Ralph L. Beard III of Falling Waters, W.Va.; a sister, Jane E. Strickler of Hagerstown; a brother, Jack W. Palmer of Hagerstown; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Faye, Helen Hartle and Ruth Guessford; and a brother, Robert Palmer.

Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church, 108 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Doris E. Keener

Doris Eldridge Keener, 81, of 13210 Fairfax Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 2, 1916, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence V. and Lillie May Ridenour Eldridge Sr.

She was a 1934 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She attended Catawba College. She graduated from Towson State College in 1938.

She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Fountain Head Country Club; and Town and Country Garden Club.

She is survived by her husband, Russell B. Keener of Hagerstown; a daughter, Lyn K. Totty of Atlanta; three sons, Timothy B. Keener, Stuart B. Keener and Keith B. Keener, all of Hagerstown; a brother, Clarence V. Eldridge Jr. of Hagerstown; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The viewing will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Faye E. Gearhart

THURMONT, Md. - Faye Elizabeth Gearhart, 82, of 20 E. Moser Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at her home.

Born Aug. 30, 1916, in Jefferson, Md., she was the daughter of the late Aaron Franklin and Estie Mae Guyton Rice.

She retired from Moores Business Communication, Thurmont.

She was a member of Deerfield United Methodist Church in Deerfield and attended Weller United Methodist Church in Thurmont.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Victor Gearhart Sr.; four daughters, Janice Snyder, Nancy Rice, Doris Kuhn and Carol Long, all of Thurmont; one son, Charles V. Gearhart Jr. of Florida; four sisters, Eileen Stull of Walkersville, Md., Olive Duble, Pauline Duble and Erma Black, all of Thurmont; two brothers, Emmert Rice of Chicago, and Ernest Rice of Westminster, Md.; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Eva Fogle; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Weller United Methodist Church, 101 N. Altamont Ave., Thurmont. Pastor Ruth Ann Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Earl L. Phillips

BOONSBORO - Earl L. "Bobby" Phillips, 71, of Boonsboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 14, 1927, in Brownsville, he was the son of the late Earl B. and Flora Shawen Phillips.

He was a graduate of Columbia Business College, Hagerstown.

He formerly was employed in the transportation office of Western Maryland Railway in Hagerstown; and later at the Veterans Affairs Center in Martinsburg, W.Va., and HEW in Rockville, Md. He retired in 1990 from the storeroom center of Fort Detrick, Frederick, Md. Most recently, he was employed at Sears in Francis Scott Key Mall, Frederick.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Maryland Minutemen Militia.

He was a member of Brownsville Church of the Brethren, through which he supported Moody Bible Institute, Billy Graham Crusade, Friends of Israel and Feed the Children.

He was a former secretary and president of Boonsboro Park Board, a member of Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion in Boonsboro, and AMVETS Post 10 in Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy E. Howell Phillips, whom he married Dec. 30, 1951; one daughter, Lorrie Phillips; two sisters, Ardell J. Cronise of Boonsboro, and Julia Green of Funkstown; one brother, Richard Marshall Phillips of Hagerstown; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur Preston "Jack" Phillips and Warren Ranson Phillips.

Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. R. Thomas Fralin Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Laurence D. Silverman

Laurence David Silverman, 25, of 624 Knights Bridge Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg, Pa.

Born Dec. 4, 1972, in Silver Spring, Md., he was the son of Neal Silverman of Baltimore and Joyce Shaw Silverman of Hagerstown.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Lauren Silverman of Thurmont, Md.; a sister, Dayna Silverman of Hagerstown; two brothers, Steven Silverman and Russell Silverman, both of Hagerstown; maternal grandparents, Thomas Shaw of Laurel, Md., and Stella Roberts of Tennessee; paternal grandmother, Rita Rosenfield of Laurel; and maternal great-grandmother, Roxxie Trent of Tennessee.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert M. Shank

Robert Morris Shank, 73, of 20413 Cool Hollow Road, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

Born June 1, 1925, in Washington County, he was the son of the late William and Mary Beckley Shank.

He was a self-employed farmer.

He was a member of Salem Reformed Church, where he was on the cemetery committee, a member and former assistant superintendent of the Sunday school.

He was a member of the Maryland Draft Horse and Mule Association, Appaloosa Horse Club, Maryland Percheron Association, Percheron Horse Association of America, Washington County Ag Expo and Washington County Farm Bureau. He was 4-H volunteer leader for 52 years and Maryland 4-H All Star.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma J. Martin Shank; two daughters, Joy Zepp of Hagerstown and Janet Stiles of Boonsboro; a stepdaughter, Lori Koontz of Greencastle, Pa.; a stepson, Roger Grimm of Hagerstown; a sister Geneva Clark of Clear Spring; two brothers, Ralph Shank and John Shank, both of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. J. Clark Hayes will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Reformed Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Salem Reformed Church Cemetery, P.O. Box 296, Maugansville, Md. 21767.

Lawrence R. Dailey

WINCHESTER, Va. - Lawrence Randolph Dailey, 83, of 211 Dodge Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at Winchester Medical Center.

Born Jan. 25, 1915, in Cross Junction, Va., he was the son of the late Walter E. and Grace Luttrell Dailey.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Brannon Dailey, in 1969. They were married in 1933.

He was a kilnman for Shenandoah Brick and Tile.

He was a member of Isaak Walton League.

He is survived by a daughter, Priscilla Dailey of Winchester; three sons, Donald R. Dailey of Hagerstown, Ellwood Randolph Dailey of Winchester and Harry W. Dailey of Glen Burnie, Md.; two sisters, Eva Lamp and Alberta Crosen, both of Winchester; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Dailey.

Services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Omps Funeral Home. Pastor Tom Boggess will officiate. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
