August 25, 2000

Dorothy Marie Currens of Stevensville, MD. died Friday August 25, 2000 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. She was 81.

Born on October 1, 1918 in Portsmouth, VA. Daughter of the late Eugene & Bertha Johnson. She attended school in Virginia and later moved to Highlandtown, MD. She worked for Lever Brothers in Baltimore, and later for the Martins Defense Plant during WWII. She married Charles Currens, Jr. on March 29, 1941. Residing in Highland town & Govans, MD. During this time Ms. Currens was a homemaker until 1967 when they moved to Stevensville, MD. where Mrs. Currens worked as a hostess for Poseidon Restaurant and Fisherman’s Inn.

She was member of the Ladies of the Elk’s Lodge, Eastern Star, Metropolitan Area Papilon Club, volunteer with Queen Anne’s county Meal on Wheels, Kent Island Yacht Club and active in the Senior Center in Romancoke.

She is survived by a son Frank Gene Currens of Pasadena, MD. two daughters Carolyn Lee Goodman of Hurlock, MD. and Barbara Lee Currens of Stevensville, MD. Grandmother of 3 and Great grandmother of 4. Her husband predeceased her in 1984 and son Charles Currens, III. predeceased her in 1989.

Funeral Service will be held 1:30PM on Tuesday August 29, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 6PM to 8Pm and on Monday from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. Interment will be in Woodlawn memorial park in Easton, MD.

Family request that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association 114 Baptist Street Salisbury, MD. 21801 or the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department c/o Ambulance Fund P.O. Box 27 Stevensville, MD. 21666.

James Walling Long, M.D. of Oxford died on Friday, August 25, 2000. He was 80.

Doctor Long was born on November 20, 1919 in Allentown, PA. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland before attending George Washington University where he received his degree in medicine and later served as a faculty member for 30 years. He served in the Army Medical Corp in England, France, Belgium, and Germany from 1944-46.

Upon returning to the U.S. in 1947, he started his medical practice in Internal Medicine in the Washington D.C. area. In 1966, he began working for the U.S. government as part of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF), where he served as Director of Health Service, the medical advisor to the Antarctic Research Program, and the medical advisor for geological field research in Egypt. As a result of his work in these areas, he received the NSF Meritorious Service Medal, the NSF Distinguished Service Medal, and had a mountain in Antarctica, Long Peak, named for him in recognition of services to the NSF. He is the author of " The Essential Guide to Chronic Illness" and the original author of " The essential Guide to Prescription Drugs."

Dr. Long is survived by his wife Alice Robertson Long whom he married February 23, 1943 and one son, Steven M. Long of Annapolis. A memorial service will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Sunday September 10, 2000 at 2:00 PM. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203 or the Talbot County Humane Society, PO Box 1143, Easton, MD 21601.

William P. Perry of Easton died on Friday. August 25, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital in Easton. He was 85.

Born on May 27, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late William and Elise Paul Perry. He was married for 48 years to the late Emma Orrok Perry, who died in 1987. Before moving to Delaware in 1967, he had retired from Prudential Life Insurance where he worked for 25 years. Throughout his life, he has held associated positions in the Dover, DE area. He retired from Kent County as a building inspector/plans reviewer in the late 1980's. Mr. Perry also served his country during WWII by working in the shipyards in northern New Jersey.

Mr. Perry is survived by four children, Elaine Fleureton of Pasadena, MD, Roger Perry of Lakehurst, NJ, Debbie Harmon of Easton, and Valda Hoennicke of Felton, DE; 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 3 step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at 10:00 AM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6-8 PM. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden, DE.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Omaha Boys Town, 4343 North 52nd Street, Omaha, Nebraska or the WWII Memorial Fund, American Battle Monuments Commission, Attn: GR048, P.O. Box 96074, Washington, D.C. 20090-6074.

August 24, 2000

Catherine Madeline Lowery of Stevensville, MD. died Friday August 24, 2000 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. She was 88.

Born on Jan 20, 1912 in Stevensville, MD. She was the daughter of the late Charles Clark and Grace Grimes. She graduated from Stevensville High School. She married Samuel White Lowery on January 20,1934 They resided in Stevensville where she was a homemaker until 1969 when they established Lowery Antiques (now Lowery – Turner Antiques) in Stevensville, MD. where she work until present. Mr. Lowery predeceased her in 1977. She was a lifetime member of the Kent Island Fire Company Auxiliary and Kent Island United Methodist Church.

Ms. Lowery is survived by a daughter Edith Turner of Stevensville, MD. two sons Samuel White Lowery, Jr. of Centreville, MD. and William Thomas Lowery of Stevensville, MD. A sister Nellie Moore of Stevensville, MD. ten (10) grandchildren, (17) great grandchildren and (3) great great grandchildren. Four brothers Thomas Holden Clark, William Oliver Clark, Charles Clark, Jr., and William Barton Clark and four sisters Hazel Collier, Reba Collier, Elsie Smith and Mildred Boone all predeceased her.

Funeral Service will be held 11am Wednesday August 30, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Where family and friends may call on Tuesday August 29, 2000 from 3PM to 5PM and 7PM to 9PM. Interment will be in Stevensville Cemetery in Stevensville, MD.

The family request that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Ave Queenstown, MD. 21658.

Ann Malee Warner of Centreville, MD. died suddenly in a motor vehicle accident on August 24, 2000 in Price, MD. She was 31.

Born on April 15, 1969 in Silver Springs, MD. She was the daughter of James Fryer and the late Mary Jane Dubois. She attended school in Rockville and was a graduate of Rockville High School Class of 1986. She attended Towson University and later transfer to the University of Delaware where she received her B.S. in Dietetics & Nutrition. Mrs. Warner then graduated from the McQueen Gibbs School of Nursing in Easton, MD.

She began working with the State of Maryland based out of the Queen Anne’s County Health Department in Centreville, MD. As coordinator of the WIC program for Queen Anne’s and Kent Counties. She later was employed as a nurse with the Memorial Hospital at Easton in labor and delivery. And was currently working at the Chestertown Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, MD. She was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD.

She is survived by her husband to whom she married on March 13th, 1993 James “Zeke” Gregory Warner of Centreville, MD. Two daughters Mary Jane Warner and Margaret Mae Warner both of Centreville, MD. Her father and Step mother James and Sylvia Fryer of Stevensville, MD. Sister Marci Magrisso of Miami, FL. Brother Gary Fryer of Frederick, MD. and step brother Thomas Lester of Annapolis, MD.

Funeral Mass will be held 11am on Tuesday August 29, 2000 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. Family and friends may call on Monday August 28, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. from 7PM to 9PM.

The family request that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association 114 Baptist Street Salisbury, MD. 21801.

August 18, 2000

Charles Lansinger, Jr.: Charles Gordon “Bunky” Lansinger, Jr. of Stevensville died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. He was 63.

Born in Baltimore on Jan. 19, 1937, he was the son of the late Charles Gordon Lansinger, Sr., and Agnes Engers. Mr. Lansinger worked for Bethlehem Steel until 1976, when he moved to Cape St. Claire, where he worked as a test mechanic supervisor at David Taylor Research Lab. In 1978 he moved to Kent Island. He retired in 1995.

He belonged to many community groups, including Masonic Lodge 089 in Annapolis; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1456 in Glen Burnie and Elks Lodge 2576 in Stevensville, of which he was a charter member.

Mr. Lansinger is survived by his wife, Linda; two daughters, Deborah A. Mullins of Millington, TN and Saundra L. Stowe of Chester; a son, Charles “Chuck” Lansinger, III of Centreville; two stepsons, James A. and Jason A. Dawes, both of Stevensville; two brothers, William and Dennis Lansinger, both of Baltimore; one sister, Marguerite Clark of Baltimore; and six grandchildren. A sister, Susanne Smuck, is deceased.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Wednesday, Aug. 23 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, where friends may call from 3-5 or 7-9 PM on Tuesday. Burial will follow at Stevensville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his name to the Organ Donor Transplant Center of Maryland, 1540 Caton Center Drive, Suite R, Baltimore, MD 21227.

August 14, 2000

LOUISE L. COOK: Louise L. Cook of Centreville, MD died on Monday, August 14, 2000 at the Corsica Hills Nursing Center, Centreville as a result of heart failure. She was 98.

Born March 2, 1902, near Starr, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Henry and Lillian Estelle “Dolly” Reed Covington. A lifelong resident of Queen Anne County and surrounding area, she was a 1920 graduate of Centreville High School and later went on to Towsend Normal School where she graduated in 1922. She began a teaching career at Crumpton Elementary School. She married William Henry Cook, Sr. and they raised a family of three sons. When not teaching she worked the farm with her husband. She retired from the teaching profession in 1953. However, her love of teaching led her to substitute teaching from 1953 until the 1960’s. Mr. Cook died in 1976.

She was a very active member in the Bethany United Methodist Church in Price and was very active in the Eastern Star where she was Past Worthy Matron. She was also a member of the Price Community Club.

She is survived by three sons, William N. Cook, Jr. of Queenstown, MD, Edwin D. Cook and Howard T. Cook, both of Centreville, MD; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Mary Chambers, Esther Hollingsworth, Edward, Henry, Alfred and Calvin Covington.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2000 at 1:00 PM at the Bethany United Methodist Church, Price, MD where Rev. Charles Covington will officiate.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 from 7 –9 PM.

Burial will be at the Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 6, Church Hill, MD 21623.

August 13, 2000

JOAN M. ELLIOTT: Joan Martha Elliott of Easton died at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, from complications from a recent organ transplant surgery on Sunday, August 13, 2000. She was 60.

Born September 7, 1939 in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Susan Murcavage of Sewell, NJ and the late John Victor Murcavage.

After graduating from Pitman High School, Pitman, NJ in 1957, she married Charles Elliott and in 1980 they were divorced. She was a homemaker and had worked as a legal secretary and prior to becoming disabled she had worked for Tidewater Publishing in Centreville, MD.

She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Easton.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Elliott is survived by a son, Michael Elliott of Orlando, FL; two daughters, Sharon Elliott of Queenstown, MD and Sandra Elliott of Easton, MD; a brother, Leon Murcavage of Sewell, NJ; a sister, Susan Ann Frambes of Pitman, NJ and one grandchild, Amanda Marie Singleton of Queenstown, MD. She was predeceased by her very dear friend, Ernest Lee Whitby.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, MD on Thursday, August 17, 2000 at 2:00 where prayers will be said.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to The American Diabetes Association, 114 Baptist St., Salisbury, MD 21801.

August 10, 2000

Gilbert Norris Tanner. Gilbert Norris Tanner of Winter Haven, FL formally of Seabrook, MD died on August 10, 2000 at his daughters home in Chester, MD. He was 83.

Born on June 27, 1917 in East Lake, GA. He was the son of the late William G. Tanner and Bessie Blossom Nicola. He attended School in Ohio and later attended Columbia Missionary College in Takoma Park, MD. After school he married Janice Elizabeth Hauck. Together they lived in Hyattsville, MD and Seabrook, MD where he was a self employed automobile auto body mechanic. He was the owner of Tanner Motor Service in Georgetown, MD and Tanner Auto Body in Beltsville, MD and Washington, DC. Mr. Tanner then retired in 1989 and moved to Florida in 1999. He thoroughly enjoyed his summers in Otis, Maine from 1947 to the present.

He is survived by his son Gilbert Norris Tanner, Jr. and wife Maureen of Severn, MD; a daughter Janice Elizabeth Rodano and her husband Paul of Chester, MD; a sister H. Grace Tanner of Hains City, FL; three grandchildren: Michele Tanner, Michael Rodano, and Wendy Rodano Brueggeman; and one great grandchild Laura Brueggeman. His wife Janice Elizabeth Hauck Tanner predeceased him in 1997.
