Lois V. Howser

BERRYVILLE, Va. - Lois Virginia Howser, 74, formerly of Madison House, Leesburg, Va., died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, in Berryville.

Born Sept. 1, 1924, in Yarrowsburg, she was the daughter of the late John Augustus and Eleanor Elizabeth Nokes Bowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Frederick Howser Jr.

She worked as a nurse in Loudoun Hospital and on private duty until the 1970s.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Ann Fewell of Leesburg and Sue Lynn Farris of Lovettsville, Va.; two sisters, Wonda Grace Bowers Rohr and Marlene Regina Bowers Kelley, both of Hagerstown; four brothers, James Lee Bowers of Boonsboro, John Augustus Bowers Jr. and Robert Marshall Bowers, both of Yarrowsburg, and Arthur Eugene Bowers of Sterling, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Md. 67, Brownsville. The Rev. R. Thomas Fralin Jr. and the Rev. William Brett Lowry will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Brownsville, Md. 21715.

Arrangements are by Loudoun Funeral Chapel.

Donna L.C. Jacobs

Donna Lea Carolyn Jacobs, 58, of Potomac Towers, Hagerstown, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 15, 1940, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Gaylord and Ellen Strawser of Warrenton, Va.

She was a member of Faith Chapel, Hagerstown.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by five daughters, Linda King, Donna Carpenter, Vickie Socks and Gail Higgins, all of Hagerstown, and Sharon Busey of West Virginia; one son, Brian Jacobs of Hagerstown; two brothers, Ronald Strawser and Donald Strawser, both of Virginia; 13 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A church service will be Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Chapel, 14 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. A memorial service, location to be announced at the church, will follow and end by 4:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association or American Association for the Blind. If you wish to send flowers in her memory, contact Vickie Socks at 301-797-6570.

Robert W. Miller Jr.

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Robert W. "Bob" Miller Jr., 69, of 5941 Lincoln Way West, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born May 30, 1929, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Robert Miller Sr. and Sara Wadel Miller.

He was a milkman, first employed by Hoffman-Minnich Dairy and later by Dairymaid. He retired from Harrisburg Dairies in 1991.

He was a member of King Street United Brethren Church, where he was secretary of Burton Men's Bible Class and was an usher.

He pitched for the church league softball team for more than 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Holtry Miller; two daughters, Cathy Miller, at home, and Roxann Musser of Chambersburg; and one grandson.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at King Street United Brethren Church, 172 E. King St., Chambersburg.

The Rev. Lester Stine and the Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service Thursday in the Rotz Foyer of the church.

Edna M. Gordon

Edna Mae Gordon, 91, of 933 Kenwood Drive, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at her home.

Born March 15, 1907, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Annie Hoffman Kennel.

Her husband, Bernard L. Gordon, died in 1977.

She formerly was employed by Hagerstown Rubber Co.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

She attended Ravenwood Day Care.

She is survived by a daughter, Connie L. Mozingo of Hagerstown; one son, Donald L. Gordon of Hagerstown; one brother, George Kennel of Fairfield, Pa.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Mary E. Shields

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Mary Emline Manahan Shields, 84, of Old Emmitsburg Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at her home.

Born April 17, 1914, in Frederick County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Dennis Calvin and Della Catherine Smith Manahan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Francis Shields, in 1985.

She retired in 1982 from the laundry department at Mount St. Mary's College, after 44 years.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Shrine Parish, Emmitsburg.

She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Catherine Shields of Emmitsburg; a foster sister, Catherine E. Manahan Pittinger of Emmitsburg; a foster brother, Cyrus L. Manahan of Accident, Md.; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Cyrus Levi Manahan and Calvin Dennis Manahan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Shrine Parish. The Rev. Leo R. Tittler will be celebrant. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick, Md.

The family will meet Friday at 10 a.m. at Skiles Funeral Home, Emmitsburg prior to going to the Mass.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where a Christian wake service will be held at 8 p.m.

Dayle D. Sheppard

OCALA, Fla. - Dayle Dean Sheppard, 70, of Ocala, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Born May 11, 1928, in Lincoln, Neb., he was the son of Gladys Robson Sheppard of California and the late Dale Sheppard.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a Protestant.

He is survived by two daughters, Tammy Sheppard of California and Dawn Schmal of Ranson, W.Va.; two sons, James Sheppard of California and Bane Sheppard of Nevada; a brother, Jack Sheppard of Arizona; three grandchildren; and his companion, Amber.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dale Sheppard; and a sister, Glenda Sheppard.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Charles Town. The Rev. Richard E. Neal will officiate. Burial will be private.

Arrangements are by Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson.

Allen B. Brown

Allen B. "Brownie" Brown, 81, of 539 Security Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Feb. 15, 1917, in Lucketts, Va., he was the son of the late Basil Allen and Zula "Ursula" Mae Harper Brown.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the European Theater during World War II.

He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps. After the war, he started a trucking business in Mississippi. He moved to Hagerstown in 1950 and worked as a brakeman, fireman and conductor for Western Maryland Railway. He retired on disability in 1960 and started a small trucking business in Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Miriam P. Brown; a daughter, Wendy J. Ramsey of Hagerstown; a son, E. Allen Brown of Laurel, Md.; a sister, Mildred Dial of Baltimore; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Archer Brown; and two sisters, Agnes Brown and Olivia Hartsock.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. J. Norman Mayer will officiate.

The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742; or to American Diabetes Association, Maryland Affiliate.

James L. Hutson Sr.

WILLIAMSPORT - James L. Hutson Sr., 73, of Williamsport, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 23, 1925, in Sharpsburg, he was the son of the late James H. and Elsie M. Holmes Hutson.

He was employed in maintenance at the Maryland Correctional Institution, retiring in 1988. He previously worked for Victor Products and Western Maryland Railway.

He was a Protestant.

He was a member and past sachem of Williamsport Redmen Tribe 84. He was a member of Mediary Lodge 140 AF&AM in Williamsport, a life member of Western Maryland Sportsman's Club, and a member of Eagles Club Inc. in Waynesboro and Retired Chapter 152 of Maryland Classified Employees Association.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eleanor L. "Ellie" Griffith Hutson; a daughter, Linda L. Faith of Hagerstown; a son, James L. Hutson Jr. of Clear Spring; a sister, Shirley Hewitt of Keedysville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Vonnie Allen; and two brothers, John and Ralph Hutson.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Richard A. Kroll will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

A masonic service will be held at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, and the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Mary K. Barkanic

LAUREL, Md. - Mary K. Diffenderfer Barkanic, 87, a resident of Mariner Health Care of Greater Laurel, and formerly of Waynesboro, Pa., died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, in Laurel Regional Hospital.

Born April 4, 1911, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Alvie E. and Emma Reeves Diffenderfer.

Her husband, John J. Barkanic, died in 1995. They were married Nov. 4, 1939.

She graduated from Waynesboro High School.

Prior to her marriage, she was employed by Waynesboro Knitting Mill.

She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro.

She is survived by a son, Richard J. Barkanic of Highland, Md.; a daughter, Barbara B. Harrison of Laurel; three grandchildren; and a cousin.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Evanshaw.

Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. John L. Rauch will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services on Friday.
