Marie I. McCleary

MOUNT AIRY, Md. - Marie I. McCleary, 83, of Mount Airy, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville, Md.

Born Jan. 20, 1915, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Roy E. and Mary Bernice Mickley Benshoff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David A. McCleary.

She had been a member of Goshen Mennonite Church and Sunday School since 1957, and a Sunday School teacher for 18 years.

She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Jordan of Derwood, Md., Beverly Runion of Mount Airy and Sandra Kelbaugh of Fairplay; five sons, Dale A. McCleary of Gaithersburg, Md., Ronald A. McCleary of Hagerstown, Gary E. McCleary and Harry A. McCleary, both of Mount Airy, and Ricky S. McCleary of The Plains, Va.; seven sisters and brothers, Elsie King, Lloyd Benshoff, Luella Helman, Lois Hess, Arden Benshoff, Pauline Anthony and Clayton Benshoff, all of Waynesboro; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four grandsons, Walter Phillips Jr., Thomas Phillips, Jackie Phillips and Terry Phillips.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, Md. Pastors Lee Mummau and Henry Horst will officiate. Burial will be in Goshen Mennonite Church Cemetery, Laytonsville, Md.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Goshen Mennonite Church, c/o Deacon Alvin Gehman, 7825 Rocky Road, Laytonsville, Md. 20882.

Donald M. Hoffman Sr.

WILLIAMSPORT - Donald M. Hoffman Sr., 61, of Honeyfield Road, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 15, 1937, in Williamsport, he was the son of Johanna Maxine Curran Hoffman of Williamsport and the late Joseph Markwood Hoffman.

He was employed with Grove Worldwide, Shady Grove, Pa.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of AARP; Mathias Hunt Club, Mathias, W.Va.; and NRA.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ella L. Stouffer Hoffman; two sons, Donald M. Hoffman Jr. of Pinesburg, Md. and Joseph S. Hoffman of Sharpsburg; five grandchildren; and a stepgranddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert M. Hoffman.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Albert L. Leaf Memorial Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. James E. Swecker will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Friends may call Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open Monday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Earl S. Bryan

Earl S. "Pee Wee" Bryan, 81, of 1029 Woodland Way, Hagerstown, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 13, 1916, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Franklin Bruce and Josephine Fisher Bryan.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He was employed with Pangborn Corporation, retiring in 1981. After his retirement, he was employed with Washington County Parks Department.

He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Belle Dailey Bryan of Hagerstown; a son, Stanley T. Bryan of Hagerstown; a sister, Margaret Turner of Williamsport; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence G. "Lefty" Bryan.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Albert L. Leaf Memorial Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Friends may call Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open Monday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Mabel E. Eyler

Mabel Evelyn Eyler, 87, formerly of 316 Avon Road, Hagerstown, and a resident of Chestnut Grove, Williamsport, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 24, 1910, in Thurmont, Md., she was the daughter of the late Roger S. and Anna Mae Trout Lidie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd C. Eyler Sr., in 1980.

She was a 1928 graduate of Thurmont High School.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for 60 years. She was a member of Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Women's Missionary Society.

She was a member of Coffmans Home for Aging Auxiliary.

She is survived by one son, Lloyd C. Eyler Jr. of Hagerstown; two grandchildren, David Eyler of Williamsport and Krista Yavulla of Herndon, Va.; four great-granddaughters; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Carleen Stoner and Lillian Martz; and one brother, Richard Lidie.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Darryl Zoller will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Elevator Fund, Grace United Methodist Church, 712 W. Church St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Janet T. Apple

HANCOCK - Janet T. Apple, 88, of Sensel Road, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 31, 1910, in Warfordsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Nancy Weller Spiker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse J. Apple, in 1964.

She retired from London Town Corp., formerly in Hancock, as an examiner.

She was a member of Hancock Assembly of God Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Virginia LeFever and Marlene Williar, both of Hagerstown, and Janice Trail of Hancock; one son, Richard Apple of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six sisters, two brothers and one granddaughter.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rehobeth United Methodist Cemetery, near Hancock.

There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday one hour prior to the service.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Hancock Assembly of God Church, North Pennsylvania Avenue, Hancock, Md. 21750.

Leona D. Knighten

Leona D. Knighten, 79, of 17419 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 19, 1918, in Rileyville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Henry Benton and Mattie Blanch Deavers Dwyer.

She was employed by Hagerstown Shoe Co. until her retirement.

She was a member of Virginia Avenue Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew J. Knighten; one brother, Joseph J. Dwyer of Middletown, Va.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Landona Campbell, Lula Orndorff and Mary Jordan; and two brothers, Harless Norris and Ira Benton Dwyer.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Albert L. Leaf Memorial Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Richard A. Gross will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Falling Waters, W.Va.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Herbert E. Brenneman

BOONSBORO - Herbert Elwood Brenneman, 69, of 107 Grove Lane, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 1, 1929, in Bittinger, Md., he was the son of the late Edward S. and Agnes May Bittinger Brenneman.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Boonsboro, where he formerly served on the church council.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and served with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Boonsboro Optimist Club and Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 42, Boonsboro.

He is survived by his wife, Edda Marie Runze Brenneman, whom he married on April 25, 1952; one daughter, Ann M. Brenneman of Boonsboro; two sons, Tom E. Brenneman of Jefferson, Md., and David C. Brenneman of Inwood, W.Va.; three sisters, Blanche Glotfelty of Addison, Pa., Lucy Kelley of Chevy Chase, Md., and Ruth Bevans of Arlington, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Joseph I. Donovan III will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

There will be no evening visitation; however, the family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Memorial Fund, 64 S. Main St., Boonsboro, Md. 21713.

Paul V. Wiles

FREDERICK, Md. - Paul Vernon Wiles, 66, of 6011 Pleasant Drive, died Friday, Sept. 18, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick.

Born Feb. 13, 1932, near Frederick, he was the son of the late Roger Vernon and Dora Viola Ramsburg Wiles.

He was a self-employed painter until his retirement. He had previously been employed by F.M. Lawrence Co. in Gaithersburg, Md., as a painter.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served from 1952 to 1956.

He is survived by his former wife and friend, Charlotte Elliot Wiles of Frederick; two daughters, Paula A. Wiles of Brunswick, Md., and Jean M. Harley of Frederick; five sisters, Betty Lee Summers of Middletown, Md., Grace Ellen Page and Clantha Sheffer, both of Frederick, Mary Burns of Hagerstown and Dora Jane Schildknecht of Boonsboro; three brothers, Ralph Wiles and Clyde Wiles, both of Frederick, and Roger Wiles of Myersville, Md.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. The Rev. Ed Jordan will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Myersville.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the family in care of Jean Harley, 344C Prospect Blvd., 204, Frederick, Md. 21701.

Avis M. Jones

Avis Marie Jones, 81, a resident of Western Maryland Center, Hagerstown, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at the center.

Born Oct. 9, 1916, in Clevelandtown, near Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Maude A. Greenwalt Kline.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ellsworth Jones, in 1990.

She was a former employee of People's Drug Store in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Manor Church of the Brethren and was a former Sunday school teacher.

She was a member of ladies auxiliary of AMVETS Post 10, Hagerstown; and ladies auxiliary of District 12 Fire Co. in Fairplay.

She is survived by one son, John H. Jones of Hagerstown; two sisters, Virginia McMasters of Florida and Magdalene Green of Hagerstown; one brother, Junior L. Kline of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Lucy Kahleine, Edna Merrill, Beulah Edleblute and Sadie Edleblute; and two brothers, Elmer R. Kline and Thomas Kline.

Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Manor Cemetery in Tilghmanton.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
