Lawrence C. Hulshart

Lawrence C. Hulshart, 77, of 7 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 23, 1921, in Norrisville, Md., he was the son of the late Bradford L. and Florence Hostler Hulshart.

He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II.

He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot after 33 years.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Hulshart of Paw Paw, W.Va.; a daughter, Marica H. Hanifan of Kearneysville, W.Va.; and two sisters, Nancy Waltimer of Pylesville, Md., and Gloria Anderson of Stewartstown, Pa.

A service will be held Friday, Oct. 2, in Stewartstown. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery in Fawn Grove, Pa.

Memorial donations may be made to American Legion Post 202, 400 American Legion Way, Williamsport, Md. 21795.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Edgar E. Long Jr.

Edgar E. Long Jr., 41, of 125 Elm St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 5, 1957, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Edgar E. Long Sr. and Frances E. Cooksey Long.

He retired from Bowman Trucking in 1995. He owned and operated an automotive body shop.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by a sister, Constance L. Everts of Greencastle, Pa.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until services begin.

Edith M. Ott

KENSINGTON, Md. - Edith M. Ott, 71, of Kensington and formerly of Bolivar, W.Va., died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at her home.

Born Sept. 1, 1927, in Bolivar, she was the daughter of the late Harry T. and Ethel Staubs Longerbeam.

She graduated from Harpers Ferry High School in 1945.

She retired after almost 30 years of U.S. government service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She had been chief of the Cost Analysis and Budget Section, Center Engineer Division. She also worked in the office of Dr. Charles Farwell in Wheaton, Md., and as a credit solicitor for Montgomery Ward.

She attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Kensington.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Calvin S. Ott; two sons, Calvin S. Ott Jr. and Ronald K. Ott, both of Kensington; a granddaughter; a grandson; and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen D. Jackson and Frances E. Tusing, and a brother, Harry E. Longerbeam.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. B.G. Turner will officiate. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry.

Leon E. Hoover

NORFOLK, Va. - Leon Edward Hoover, 86, of the 700 block of Miller Street, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998.

He was a native of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Evelyn Harne Hoover.

He retired from NAS Norfolk as a division director after 35 years of service.

He was a member and former Eucharistic minister of Christ the King Catholic Church in Norfolk.

He was a past president of Ryan Club of Norfolk; board member of Catholic Family and Children's Services; 4th degree member and past state master of Knights of Columbus 367 Norfolk; first president and fellow of Crossroads Lyons Club; former member of International Order of the Alhambra, Padul Caravan 69, Norfolk; and active with Holy Family Retreat House in Hampton, Va.

He is survived by his sister, Ruth Wilson of Long Beach, Miss.; and two brothers, John Hoover of Hagerstown and Frank Hoover of Franklin, Md.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, Norfolk. The Rev. Bryan Rafferty will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park.

A Christian wake service will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave., Norfolk.

Constance J. Maile

Constance J. "Connie" Maile, 63, of 17906 Daisy Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at her home.

Born June 5, 1935, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Russell C. Eardley and Catherine J. Silvers Garrish.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Maile, in 1995.

She was employed by Rae Lynn's Restaurant and Coffee Shop prior to her illness.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Rebecca Scott of Baltimore; four daughters, Linda J. Johnston of Hagerstown, Lori M. Stoner of Inwood, W.Va., Sandra L. Sneathen of Cumberland, Md., and Robin K. Maile of Frederick, Md.; two sons, Kenneth H. Maile of Gaffney, S.C. and David E. Maile of Chesapeake, Va.; a sister, Deloris Deitrich of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three brothers, Russell C. Eardley, Clifford E. Eardley and George T. Eardley, all of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kendra L. Johnston, in 1983.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond H. Shriver will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The viewing will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dorothy L. Pharr

RICHMOND, Va. - Dorothy LeRoy Pharr, 81, of Richmond, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998.

Born Oct. 7, 1916, in Tignall, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Lansing Burrows and Glennie David LeRoy Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Heard Pharr Jr., in 1982.

She was a graduate of Anderson College, Anderson, S.C.; and Emory University in Decatur, Ga.

She is survived by a son, Robert L. Pharr of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Linda H. Pharr of Richmond and Barbara P. Porterfield of Charles Town, W.Va.; a brother, Lansing B. LeRoy Jr. of Hendersonville, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, L. David LeRoy of Jefferson County, W.Va., on June 27, 1998.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Tignall (Ga.) Baptist Church Cemetery. The Revs. Albert W. Huyck Jr. and Dale Fincher officiated.

Pauline V. Little

Pauline Virginia Little, 74, of 15606 Deer Lodge Circle, Hagerstown, and a resident of Clearview Nursing Home, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at the home.

Born Oct. 6, 1923, in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late George Daywalt and Frances Gearheart.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Mount Calvary Church of God of Clear Spring.

Graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert E. Timmons will officiate.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Arrangements are by Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, Clear Spring.

Elsie M. Rhodes

Elsie Marie Seitz Rhodes, 90, of 644 N. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village, Hagerstown.

Born June 23, 1908, in New Freedom, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Eli and Bertha Hershey Seitz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Hartman Rhodes, in 1991.

She was a graduate of New Freedom High School in Pennsylvania and Thompson Business College in York, Pa.

She was a member of Zion Reformed United Church of Christ in Hagerstown.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverly A. Rhodes of York; three sons, Rodger D. Rhodes, James D. Rhodes and David S. Rhodes, all of Hagerstown; a sister, Mary Gemmill of Stewartstown, Pa.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jack Dale Cook will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Zion Reformed United Church of Christ, 201 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Corliss F. Shafer

Corliss Forkner Shafer, 76, of 914 Kenly Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Center.

Born Oct. 20, 1921, in Princeton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert Fred Forkner Sr. and Beulah Nevada Ashburn Forkner.

Her husband, Leonard Leon Shafer, died in 1985.

She was a 1940 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She was former owner and operator of Shafer's Tavern in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by a brother, Robert F. Forkner Jr. of Moorefield, W.Va.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Forkner and Lucille Detrow.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Revs. Rachel Black and David Eberly will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, 20402 Beaver Creek Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
