August 9, 2000

Carol Ann Richter. Carol Ann Richter, 53, died Wednesday August 9 after complications from a long struggle with pulmonary hypertension. While awaiting a double-lung transplant, Carol fought for insurance and regulatory reform and became involved in organ transplant research.

Born in Baltimore, Carol lived with her family in Chicago and Pennsylvania before settling on Kent Island. She enjoyed spending time with her family, tennis, reading, dancing, cooking and entertaining, especially at Christmas. She never missed an Oriole game and she never passed up a chance to sit by the pool or to read a book on the beach. Carol is survived by her husband Brian of 34 years, her son Matthew of Earlville, PA, her daughter Amy Reilly of Churchton, MD. her brother Michael of Old Lyme, Ct, and her two grandchildren Jackson and Patrick.

Family will receive friends and neighbors at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD on August 11, 2000 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in memory of Carol Richter be made to the Transplant Resource Center of Maryland, 1540 Caton Center Drive, Suite R, Baltimore, MD 21227.

August 8, 2000

Betty Mae Glenn of Rock Hall, Maryland died at home on August 8, 2000. She was 74.

She was born on January 14, 1926 in Skinners Neck Rock Hall, the daughter of the late Melvin L. "Knobby" and Mary S. Kelley Glenn. Mrs. Glenn was a homemaker who cared deeply for her family. She enjoyed cooking and reading religious articles.

She is survived by 2 brothers: Ronald Glenn and Kenneth Glenn both of Rock Hall, Md.; 3 sisters: Patsy Higgs, with whom she lived with, and Lucille Stokes both of Rock Hall, Md. and Shirley Palmatory of Millington, Md. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Friday August 11, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday at the home of Patsy Higgs 5865 Williams St. Rock Hall, Md. between the hours of 6:00 and 9:00 P.M. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Rock Hall Vol. Fire Department P.O. Box 577 Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

Charles E. Knell, Jr. Charles “Charlie” E. Knell, Jr. of Stevensville, died suddenly on August 8, 2000 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. He was 49.

Born on November 11, 1950 in Baltimore, MD. He was the son of Charles E. Knell, Sr. and Jean Fitzgerald. He graduated from Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore, MD. and later attended U.M.B.C. in Baltimore, MD. He married Linda M. Sterling on November 18, 1988. He was the owner of Allied Capital Mortgage Corp. and was also a settlement officer for Capital Title. Mr. Knell was an active member with A.A. and he enjoyed fishing at Cape Hatteras, N.C.

He is survived by his wife Linda Sterling of Stevensville, MD. His parents Charles E. Knell, Sr. and Jean F. Knell of Virginia Beach, VA a sister Cindy Franz of Virginia Beach, VA. And brother in law and sister in law Jim & Peggy Baker of Mechanicsburg, PA.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday 1PM at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville, MD. The family request that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to American Cancer Society P.O. Box 132, Queenstown, MD. 21658.

August 7, 2000

Mildred Lavina LeCates of Chestertown, Md. died at Magnolia Hall Nursing Center in Chestertown on August 7, 2000. She was 95.

Born near Chestertown, Md. on July 6, 1905, she was the daughter of the late George V. Hatcherson and the late Eva Downey Hatcherson Lee. Mrs. LeCates graduated from Chestertown High School and went to work for C&P Telephone Company in 1927. In 1929 she married Conrad "Simms" Le Cates. She worked for C&P Telephone Company as an operator for 40 years retiring in 1967. In 1994 her husband predeceased her.

Mrs. LeCates was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #86 for 55 years where she served as Past Worthy Matron, Deputy Grand Lecturer from 1961-1963, and Grand Representative to Utah from 1967 until 1971.

Nieces and nephews survive her. She was predeceased by a brother Robert R. Hatcherson, Sr. and a sister: Mabel Taylor.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday August 9, 2000 at 1:00 P.M. at Chester Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday prior to the graveside service, at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home from 11:30 until 12:15 when an Eastern Star Service will be held at 12:15.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Kent and Queen Anne's Rescue Squad P.O. Box 126 Chestertown, Md. 21620.

Mary Hicks Lawing of Easton died on Monday, August 7, 2000 at the William Hill Manor in Easton. She was 91. Born in Iredell County, NC, on March 26, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Janola Kellar Hicks. After graduating from high school in Iredell County, she graduated from the Cosmetologist School for Beauticians in North Carolina. As a cosmetologist and licensed electrologist, she worked for the House of Beauty in Maiden, NC until retiring in the early 1980's. Following the death of her husband, Alvin L. Lawing, Sr., in 1995, she moved to Easton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Easton, a past member of the First Baptist Church in Orlando, FL where she sung in the choir, and a past member of the First Baptist Church in Maiden, NC, where she was a soprano soloist and teacher. Mrs. Lawing is survived by a son, Alvin L. Lawing, Jr. of Easton; a granddaughter and a great-grandson. Graveside services and burial will be private in Maiden, NC.

Elizabeth B. Miller of Kennedyville, Maryland died on August 7, 2000 at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, Md. She was 93.

Born in Kennedyville she was the daughter of the late Samuel Hill and Emma Grantlin Beasten. She married Ralph E. Miller in 1923. Together they raised their family and farmed for the majority of their life, both were very active in the farming community.

Mrs. Miller was also active in her earlier years with both the Kent County Farm Bureau and the Ladies Aid of the United Methodist Church in Galena, Md. She later became a member of Shrewsbury Episcopal Church in Kennedyville, Md. She was predeceased by her husband on October 9, 1966. Mrs. Miller enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, and especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

he is survived by 3 daughters: Rebecca M. Startt and Hester M. Bryden both of Chestertown, Md., and Edna M. Brooks of Huntington, West Virginia; 1 brother: Albert Hill Beasten of Earleville, Md.; 1 sister: Edna Peaper Ferguson of Newark, De.; 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by 3 sons: Harold E., Roger B. and Ralph I. Miller along with one sister: Bertha B. Miller.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday August 10, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Road Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service (10-11am). Interment will be in Chester Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

August 3, 2000

Thomas Edward Spies, Sr. of Cordova died at his home on Thursday, August 3, 2000. He was 66.

Born in Easton on May 27, 1934, he was the son of the late Elmer and Doris Pardoe Spies. He received his GED and then served as an ammunition specialist in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-55 before enlisting in the U.S. Army from 1955-58. He re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1959 until his retirement from the military in 1972. He moved to Milford, DE and began working at the L.D. Caulk Company. In 1983, he moved to Kent Island and took a position as a Naval Police Officer at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. In the early 1990's, he moved to Cordova but continued to work at the Naval Academy as security at the David Taylor Research Center. For the past four years, he worked as a security officer at William Hill Manor in Easton.

His wife of 18 years, Patricia A. Spies, also died on August 3, 2000.

He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks, Easton Lodge #1622, the American Legion Post 70, Easton, and the E.E. Streets Memorial Post, V.F.W. Post #5118, Easton.

Mr. Spies is survived by three daughters, Valerie Willey of Abingdon, Sherrie Jackson of Milford, DE, and Teresa Bowman of Greenwood, DE; a son, Thomas Spies, Jr. of Orlando, FL; a step-son, C.W. Draper, Jr. of Goldsboro; two sisters, Dorothy Schauber and Shirley Dalton, both of Dover, DE; four brothers, W. Alfred Spies of Salisbury, Howard Spies of Seaford, DE, John Spies of Camp Springs, and Elmer Spies, Jr. of Cambridge; and 9 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton on Thursday, August 10, 2000 at 10:00 AM. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Monday, August 7, 2000 from 7:00 - 8:00 PM.

August 2, 2000

Clara Oddo Giarrusso of Chestertown, MD, formerly of Des Plaines, IL died on Wednesday, August 2, 2000 at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 98.

Born in Palermo, Italy on May 26, 1902, she was the daughter of the late Ross and Antoinette Domino Oddo. As a small child she and her family moved to the United States where they settled in Des Plaines, IL. In 1919 she married Mike Giarrusso and they raised their family in Des Plaines.

In 1980 she moved to Chestertown, MD following the death of her husband in 1976. She was a 50 year member with the White Shrine #43 and the Order of the Eastern Star #765, where she was Past Worthy Matron. She attended the First United Methodist Church in Chestertown and she was very accomplished in crocheting.

Mrs. Giarrusso is survived by a son, Carl O. Giarrusso of Spring Hill, FL; a daughter, Salvina Benjamin of Chestertown, MD; two sisters, Rose Good and Mary Kuna, both of Des Plaines, IL; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 7, 2000 at 1:00 PM at the Ridgewood Cemetery in Des Plaines, IL.

n lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 711 Washington Ave., Chestertown, MD 21620. Arrangements are by the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown, MD and by the Oehler Funeral Home, Des Plaines, IL.

Irene E. Roxburgh: Irene E. Roxburgh of Easton, died at The Memorial Hospital, Easton on Wednesday August 2, 2000.

She was 85. Born in Cheshire County, England on January 29, 1915 she was daughter of the late Alfred J. and Mary Turner Hand. She attended the Hunter Street Girls School in Cheshire County, England. In 1937 she married Robert Duncan Roxburgh they made their home in England. During WWII she held clerical positions with the N.A.A.F.I. (Army, Navy and Air Force Institutes in England and France.)

In the 1954 she moved to the United States and became a U.S. citizen, she lived on Long Island NY, Connecticut and Cambridge Md. and in the 1960's moved to Easton, where she worked as a nurses aide at the Memorial Hospital for a number of years.

She was a member of Trinity Cathedral, Easton.

Mrs. Roxburgh is survived by a niece; Leslie Dewhurst of London, England.

Memorial services will be held at Trinity Cathedral, 315 Goldsborough Street Easton, on Wednesday, August 16th at 11:00AM. Burial will be private.

August 1, 2000

Dudley Simpler, of Franklin, Kentucky, formally of Millington, Maryland, died at his home on August 1st 2000 as a result of lung cancer.

A native of Maryland's Eastern Shore, he was the son of the Late James A. and Nettie Teat Simpler. He worked in farming and in mechanical contracting in Maryland before moving to Tennessee. Since 1970, he worked as a manufacturer's representative for the Palz and Aer-Way Corporations.

Mr. Simpler is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Powell Simpler, his two sons Michael and Mark all of Franklin, Kentucky; his daughter Judy of Nashville, Tennessee, and by his granddaughters Kari (Dennis) Walters, Christa Simpler and Amanda Simpler and a great granddaughter Elizabeth Walters all of Galena, Maryland. He is further survived by a sister Charlotte (Jimmy) Henning of Harrington, Delaware and three brothers, Clifton (Virginia) Simpler of Frederica, Delaware, James (Tommie Jean) of Avenger, Texas and Carleslie Simpler of Delaware.

Memorial services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 Cypress Street, Millington, Maryland at 3 PM on Sunday, August 6th. A visitation will be held 2 hours prior to services. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made in his name to either the American Cancer Society or to the church of your choice.

On Aug. 1, 2000 Lillian Alice Whitby of Queenstown MD died at the Corsica Hills Meridian Nursing Center, Centreville MD. She was 95 years old.

Born in St. Michaels MD on July 24, 1905 the daughter of Vernon and Alice Porter. She attended school near Bennett Point MD. Mrs. Whitby married Samuel Whitby of Queenstown MD. He died June 27, 1977. Mrs. Whitby was a member of Wye of Carmichael United Methodist Church, Queenstown MD, and the Carmichael Homemakers.

She is survived by one son: Samuel Phillip Whitby of Grasonville MD, three grandchildren: David Whitby of Queenstown MD, Janet Wright of Glenwood MD, Jamie Whitby, of Queenstown, MD, Eight Great-grandchildren: Allyson and Brian Wright of Clarksville MD, David Whitby Who is serving in the US Air Force, Texas, Tyler Whitby of Queenstown MD, Courtney and Phillip Whitby of Queen Ann MD, Karen and Kelly Austin of Queenstown MD. She is also survived by one great great grand child.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Wye of Carmichael United Methodist Church in Queenstown, MD on Friday Aug. 4, 2000 from 10 am to 11 am. Funeral services in church at 11 AM. Interment in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton MD.
