Quillin, Marie Hill

Salisbury: Marie Hill Quillin, 93, of Salisbury died on Thursday March 8, 2001 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in Laurel, DE on June 11, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Hill and Maggie Ellis Hill. Two sons, Samuel M. Quillin and Edgar C. Quillin preceded her in death.

Mrs. Quillin graduated from Laurel High School an attended the University of Delaware. She was a longtime member of Wicomico Presbyterian Church and was a former member and past president of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Junior Auxiliary Board.

She is survived by her husband of sixty nine years, Benjamin P. Quillin of Salisbury, five grandchildren; Jill Quillin Baer of Towson, MD, Lyn Quillin, Leslie Quillin, and Danny Quillin, all of Reston, VA, and David Quillin of Salisbury, two great-grandchildren; Rachel Baer and Emily Baer, a caregiver; Claire Brittingham, and several nieces and nephews. Three sisters; Nellie Beach, Madelyn Rue, and Doris Marvel preceded her in death.

A graveside funeral service will be held today at 2:00 P.M. at Parsons cemetery in Salisbury. The Rev. W. Bruce Kirk will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wicomico Presbyterian Church, 129 Broad St., Salisbury, MD 21801. The staff of Bounds Funeral Home in Salisbury is handling arrangements.

Turcotte, Maurice G.

MSG Maurice G. Turcotte (US Army Retired) 58 of Prince George,Va. died Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond. He was born in Cornwall Ontorio Canada the son of the late Romeo and Rose Anna Desalette Turcotte. Mr. Turcotte retired after serving twenty-two years in the United States Army

He is survived by his wife, Baerbel U. Turcotte; two sons, Gerald S. Turcotte of Clarksville,TN, Andre M. and wife Karolyn Turcotte of Diamond Head MS; a granddaughter, Jessica E. Turcotte; two grandsons, Nicholas S. and Sebastian J. Turcotte; a brother, Paul Turcotte of Cornwall Ontario, Canada also several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, April 28,2001 from 3:00-4:30 P.M. at the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA. A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at Fort Lee Memorial Chapel with the Father Frank Borkowski officiating. The burial of his cremains with full military honors will be Friday, May 4,2001 at 1:00 p.m. at Quantico National cemetery, Quantico, VA.. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Virginia, P.O. Box 7065, Richmond Virginia 23221-0065 in his memory.

Barron, Sr., James David

James D. Barron, Sr. ,63, of Dinwiddie died April 19, 2001 at his residence. Mr. Barron was the son of the late Robert Lee and Florence Ella Wilson Barron. He was a member of Dinwiddie Moose Lodge.

Mr. Barron is survived by his wife, Elizabeth M. Barron; two sons, Michael Barron and David Barron, Jr., a step son, Joseph Golomb, four daughters, Cynthia Barron, Tammy Gibbs, Joyce Hill and Elizabeth Joyce, eight grandchildren, Lisa Barron, Sean Barron, Nichol Golomb, Eric Griffin, Elizabeth Hill, David Barron III, Todd Barron and Adam Gibbs, two sisters, Ella Pauline Randolph and June Deeds; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 23, 2001 at 1:00 P.M. at the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, with the Reverend Carl Weaver officiating. Interment will follow in Blandford cemetery, Petersburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, April 22, 2001` from 3:30 to 5:00 P.M.

Compton, Ann Page

Ann Page Rowe Compton, of Colonial Heights, died Friday, March 23, 2001 in Dinwiddie County. She was daughter of the late Harry Benjamin Rowe and Josephine Funk Rowe and widow of Lloyd H. Compton. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She and her late husband formerly operated Compton’s Amoco in Colonial Heights.

She is survived by a son, John R. Blaha, Jr. and his wife Amy of Colonial Heights; a daughter, Jonni Page Stirrup of Richmond; a sister Catherine Rowe Harrison of Petersburg; five grandchildren, Beatrice Ellen Blaha, John R. Blaha, III, Josephine Marie Blaha, Julianne Louise Stirrup and Jessica Page Stirrup; and a nephew, Vernon L Harrison, Jr.

A Christian Wake Service, with Fr. James Gallagher officiating, will held Sunday 7:30 p.m. in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights following which the family will receive friends. A Funeral Mass, with Fr. Robert Spencer officiating, will be held Monday 11:00 a.m. in Quinn Hall of St. Joseph Catholic Church, W. Wahshington St., Petersburg. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery.

King, Charles E

Mr. Charles King, 77, of Brunswick died on Monday, June 25, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Arlean C. Butler King who died in 1993.

Born on December 29, 1923, in Brunswick, he was the son of the late Elisha and Rosa King. Mr. King was a track man for the B&O Railroad retiring after 47 years service.He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance and Way as well as the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Brunswick. Mr. King was an avid baseball and horse racing fan. He enjoyed working in his yard accompanied by his dog, Nike. Mr. King also served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Surviving are four children; Charles E. "Turkey" King, Jr. and wife Beverly of Hagerstown, Evelyn V. King of Knoxville, Stanford L. King also of Knoxville and Margaret L. Holmes of Brunswick; eleven grandchildren; Tammy Sappington of Knoxville, Brent King of Frederick, Brianna King of Hagerstown, Greta M. Morehead of Knoxville, Gregory L. Lincoln of Knoxville, Stephen King of Olney, Kenny Mallory of South Carolina, Michelle Jackson of Gaithersburg, Treva Jackson of Hawaii, Quincy Sutton of Fairfax, VA and Darryl A. Wilson of Winchester, VA; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, William King and wife Nellie of Brunswick; his mother-in-law, Margaret Butler of Knoxville; a sister-in-law, Mary King of Frederick as well as numerous nieces and nephews including a devoted niece, Shirley Rowe. Mr. King was preceded in death by two brothers, James King and Joe King; and his son-in-law, Rev. Eugene Holmes who died on Feb. 7, 2001.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM on Thursday, June 28, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick where funeral services will held on Friday, June 29, beginning at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Sherman Lambert of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church will officiate.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Arlean C. King Memorial Fund, 202 Jefferson Pike, Knoxville, Md 21758.

FUNERAL NOTICE FOLLOWS:

Funeral services for Mr. Charles Edward King, 77, of Brunswick who died on Monday, June 25, were held on Friday, June 29, in the Stauffer Funeral Home Chapel, Frederick. The Rev. Kaye Coates of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Brunswick officiated and was assisted by Rev. Richard Dyson and Rev. Vivian Stanton. Rev. Eugene Wilson served as pianist and accompanied those in attendance in singing "When We All Get To Heaven". He also played while singing two solos; "Blessed Assurance" and "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" as well as offering words of encouragement. Verla Carter read the acknowledgements and Rev. Sherman Lambert gave the eulogy. Serving as pallbearers were: Clement Banner, John Monroe, Joseph Smothers, Earl Coates, James Morrison and Dennis Stockton. Interment was in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Goodman, Mattie Womack

Mattie Womack Goodman, began her new life on Friday, June 22, 2001 at 5:30 a.m. She was preceded in death by her husband Curtis B. Goodman, Sr. of 49 years; a son, Curtis B. Goodman, Jr. a daughter, Ann G. Clarke; and a son-in-law, James E. Clarke. She is survived by two sisters, Virginia and Pearl; one daughter, Betty; seven grandchildren, Perry, Kay, Cheryl, Pam, Sharon, Diane and Linda; nine great-grandchildren, Victoria, Logan, Nikki, Shana, Brandon, Travis, Amanda, Daniel and Derek. Mrs. Goodman was retired from Chesterfield County.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 25, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Salem Baptist Church, 5930 Centralia Road, Chesterfield with the Rev. Steven Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 24, 2001 from 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. at E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, Colonial Heights. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Salem Baptist Church Building Fund.

Phillips, Margaret S.

Margaret S. Phillips, 83, of Warwick, MD, died Sunday June 24, 2001 at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD.

Mrs. Phillips worked at Perry Point VA Medical Center as a nursing assistant for 20 years. She was a former member and past president of Charlestown Homemakers Club and former member of North East United Methodist Church. She served as a volunteer with social services at the Elkton Armory.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Sheila Van Den Heuvel of Earleville, MD and Marie Louise Phillips of Warwick; 1 brother, Thomas Walmsley of Warwick; 5 grandchildren, Annette Wilson, Carol Ann Hurtt and William Biggers all of Earleville, Kenneth Van Den Heuvel of Warwick and Jacquline Embon of Earleville; 4 great grandchildren, Matthew Wilson of Waynesville, MO, and Jeremiah Wilson, Brad Lee Biggers and Sarah Ashley Biggers all of Earleville; and 3 great great grandchildren, Ashley Wilson and Genevieve Wilson of Waynesville, MO and Jeremiah Wilson, Jr. of Earleville.

She is preceded in death by her husband, George W. Phillips who passed away in 1970.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 27, 2001 at North East cemetery in North East, MD.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association c/o R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, PO Box 248, Rising Sun, MD 21911.

Noble, Mary Jane

Mary Jane Roe Noble of Federalsburg, MD died Friday, June 22, 2001 at

The Talbot Hospice House in Easton, MD. She was 76.

She was born March 6, 1925 in Cambridge, MD, the daughter of the late

Harold Edward Roe and Althea Catherine Robinson Roe. Her husband, William Robert Noble, preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1980.

She was a graduate of Federalsburg High School Class of 1942, and graduated from Beauty College and attended Salisbury State College. She was a beautician and had been employed by Federalsburg Sportswear. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg where she was a member of the Rebekkah Circle. She was a member of the Circle of Homemakers. She also was Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Nanticoke Chapter #64. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 5246.

She is survived by a daughter, Gail Mink, of Elkton, MD.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, at 11:00 am at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P. A. in Federalsburg with the Rev. David Heistand officiating. Interment will follow in Hill Crest cemetery in Federalsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. An Eastern Star service will be held on Sunday at 8:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Talbot Hospice Foundation, Inc., 586 Cynwood Dr., Easton, MD 21601 or to the American Cancer Society Caroline Co. Unit, P.O. Box 505, Denton, MD 21629

Kenney, John David

Salisbury - John D. Kenney, 63, of Salisbury, died Tuesday, March 20,2001, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Clossie and Mary Louise Piche Kenney.

After graduating from Lewiston Porter Senior High School in 1955, he worked on the Niagara Power Project, and served in the US Army for two years. He was a Niagara County Deputy Sheriff and a former Fire Chief of the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Co. #1, in the village of Lewiston. Mr. Kenney was the first president of the Lewiston Tyro Football league in the 1960’s, and a former member of the Lewiston Kiwanis. Upon moving to Salisbury in 1973 he was a volunteer fireman at station 2, a member of the Kiwanis club, the East Side Men’s Club, and the Bayside football, basketball and baseball association. He was actively involved with youth at the Boys Club and Wicomico County Recreational Department. Until his death he was involved with the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Salisbury State University.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie Bates Kenney, two sons William Bates Kenney of Anacortes, WA, C. Matthew Kenney and his wife Gladys of Baltimore, and a daughter Mary Margaret Marshall and her husband 2nd lieutenant Eric Marshall of Oceanside, CA, two brothers Allen Kenney of Salisbury and Kenneth Kenney of Lewiston, NY, three sisters Joyce Cooper of Lewiston, NY Dorothy Ingram of Titusville, FL and Ruth Ann Pokrzyk of Sanborn, NY. He was preceded in death by a sister June Jarvis.

A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday at 3:30 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Salisbury., where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Father Ed Aigner will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army Youth Club, 407 Oak St, Salisbury, MD 21804.

Arrangements are being handled by the staff of Bounds Funeral Home.

Bell, Addie E.

Mrs. Addie E. Bell, 88, of Frederick died on Friday, June 29, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Shirley Bell who died in 1983.

Born on November 23, 1912, in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Gibson Cope. Mrs. Bell was a greenhouse worker for Kalmia Farm Nursery in Dayton, MD retiring after 20 years service. She enjoyed growing her own vegetables and tending to her flowers.

Surviving are six children; Georgia Wharton and husband Jim of Kissimmee, FL, Marjorie Edwards of Forsyth, GA, Lois James and husband Gerald of Lakeland, FL, Paul Bell and husband Delores of Frederick, Shirley Bell also of Frederick and Stella Bohler of Smyrna, GA; 25 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; three sisters; Hettie Sibley of Damascus, MD, Bobbie Cope of Jonesville, VA, and Bonnie Monard of Rockville, MD. Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by four children; Billy Gene Bell, Rodney Bell, Jerry Bell, Betty Jane Bell; three brothers; Harm Cope, Dick Cope and Robert Cope and a sister, Johnny Cope.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Monday, July 2, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick where funeral services will held on Tuesday, July 3, beginning at 1:00 PM. The Rev. Donald T. Hammond will officiate.

Interment will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Keene, John T.

John T. Keene, 86, of Golden Hill, passed away early Monday morning, July 2, 2001 at the home of his son in Trappe, Md. after a lengthy illness.

He was born at Golden Hill on February 14, 1915, the son of the late John Francis Chaplain and Zoe LeCompte Keene. He was raised at Golden Hill and attended public schools there, including the old Keene School on Smithville Rd. On April 17, 1938 he was married to the former Audrey Murphy, and for all of his life he has worked as a carpenter. During the early part of World War II Mr. Keene worked at the Bethlehem Steel shipyard in Baltimore and on December 1, 1944 he joined the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy he served in Okinawa and aboard the U.S.S. Ticonderoga. For most of his time in the service he was a Carpenters Mate in the newly formed Seabees. He was discharged on January 30, 1946. Mr. Keene had been self employed as a carpenter and worked for numerous local building contractors over the years. Mrs. Keene passed away on December 9, 1990. For a year prior to retiring in 1995 he worked as caretaker of the J.D. Williams estate at Golden Hill.

Mr. Keene was a member of Dorchester Post 91, American Legion, Choptank Memorial Post 7460, V.F.W. and was interested in the Oak Grove Foundation.

He is survived by one daughter, Judith Ann Jenkins of Roswell, GA, two sons, Ralph J. Keene of Cannon, DE and Daniel O. Keene of Trappe, seven grandchildren; Brent E. Keene, Mark E. Keene, Curtis Priestly, Teresa Priestly, John O. Bennett, Donald A. Keene, and Brandy A. Bradley, one great-grandson Corey Keene, one sister; Helen K. Warburton of Elkton, MD. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Three brothers, Francis C. Keene, Thomas Elzey Keene, and Donald Augustus Keene preceded him in death.

Rev. Pardee Bramble will conduct a funeral service at the Thomas Funeral Home on Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock. Burial will take place in the Oak Grove Churchyard at Golden Hill. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday night from 7:30 to 9. Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Foundation, P.O. Box 836, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Pall bearers will be Brent Keene, Mark Keene, John Bennett, Donald Keene, Alan Keene, and Ted Abbott. Honorary bearers will be Robert Keene, Joe Spicer, Bill Spicer, Larry Jenkins, Everett Simmons, Jr., Lin Spicer, John Huber, T.J. Abbott and Corey Keene.
