Mills, Mildred R.
Mildred R. Mills, formerly of Cambridge, passed away at the Harbor Hospital in Baltimore on Tuesday July 3, 2001. She was 84. She was born at Cornersville on June 29, 1917 and was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Mattie Edwards Hill.
Mrs. Mills had attended schools in Cambridge. She and Sydney G. “Bill” Mills were married
on April 6, 1933. He passed away on May 19, 1994. For a number of years she had worked in the cafeteria at Cambridge High School. Since 1998 she has made her home in Odenton at the Hearthome Assisted Living Center. She had been a patient at the Harbor Hospital in Baltimore since last Thursday where she passed away on Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. Mills is survived by three grandsons, Gary P. Mills of Odenton, Brady W. Mills of Alexandria, VA and Matthew M. Mills of Crofton. She is also survived by a great grandson, Ryan C. Mills of Odenton. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a son, J. Vernon Mills.
A Funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday afternoon in the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans cemetery with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, C/O Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam RD, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
Jackson, Sheila C.
Sheila C. Jackson, daughter of the late George F. and Mary E. Shackelford, was born on March 15, 1950 in Baltimore, MD. She departed this life on June 22, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
She attended public schools in Baltimore, MD. In 1968, she graduated from Edmondson High School with honors. Another milestone was when she graduated from Morgan State University with honors and obtained a degree in Chemistry in 1972. The occasion was the same commencement date for her husband, Dr. Howlett Jackson.
After college, she worked in her field of Chemistry for companies such as 3M, Allied Chemicals, and Hercules Corporation until the time of her illness.
She married
Dr. Howlett Jackson and from this union one son was born, Howlett Jackson, Jr. Her daughter, Sabrina Carter, was born prior to this union.
Sheila was extremely active in civic and community activities. She was a life member of the Harford County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Her various positions with the organization were, Education Chairperson, Member of Executive and Program Committees and sometimes Assistant Secretary. Another Civic involvement was as a member of the Harford County Small Business Resources Center. In addition, she was involved with Harford county Meditation Program, a volunteer for the Harford County Human Relations Office and a Member of the Superintendent of Harford County Schools Ad Hoc Committee.
During most of her life, she was a regular member of Douglas Memorial Church in Baltimore, MD. As a local resident, she and her family frequently attended Helping Hands Ministries in Harford County.
Sheila was an interior decorator who enjoyed arts and crafts. She especially liked to create her artistic and unique flower arrangements.
She had numerous lifelong friends from all over the United States. Her friends looked forward to tasting the delicious rolls she often baked. She also became known as the local “bargain expert” who always had an eye to spot and purchase a good “deal”.
She was extremely family oriented and cherished quality time with her husband, daughter, son, grandchildren, and other relatives. All who knew her will miss her great personality and beautiful smile.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Howlett Jackson of Havre de Grace, MD; two children, Sabrina Carter of Baltimore, MD, and Howlett Jackson, Jr. of Havre de Grace, MD; three sisters, Darnell Harper, Denise Shackelford, and Cassandra Shackelford; one brother, Howard Shackelford; five step sisters, Brenda Carney, Joan Swann, Mary Jane Surrette, Barbara Jean Shackelford, and Cheryl Strickland; two step brothers, George F. Shackelford Jr., and Ralph Shackelford; two grandchildren, Tyson Lin and Morgan Randall. She also leaves to cherish her memory many sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, as well as a host of friends.
Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday June 29, 2001 at Helping Hands Ministeries, 3237 Level Road, Churchville, MD where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in St. James cemetery, Havre de Grace, MD.
Nesbitt, Ellis C.
Ellis C. Nesbitt, 76, of North East, MD, died Wednesday July 4, 2001 in Elkton, MD.
Mr. Nesbitt, the son of the late Charley & Mary Nesbitt, was born on February 28, 1925 in Port Deposit, MD. He was a member of State Line Baptist Church and a U. S. Army veteran of WWII. He was employed as a carpenter for Amtrak.
He is survived by his son, Ellis Charles Nesbitt, Jr. of Quarryville, PA; a daughter, Patricia J. Reeves of North East, MD; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Pauline J. Nesbitt, who passed away in 1997 and a sister.
Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday July 10, 2001 at R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen Street, Rising Sun, MD where friends may call Monday evening from 7 – 9 p.m. Burial will be in Rosebank cemetery, Rising Sun, MD with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post 194 Honor Guard.

Nichols, Floyd Lynwood
Floyd Linwood Nichols of Preston, son of the late Edgar Clinton Nichols and the late Viola Hammond Nichols,w as born on December 30, 1923 in Denton (Concord-Smithville Area), Maryland.
He departed this life on Monday afternoon, July 2, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, Maryland.
Floyd received his education in the public schools in Caroline County. He attended Haynesville Elementary School and later Federalsburg School.
Floyd, also known as "Chief" was best was known for his warm personality, his willingness to help anyone, his bright smile and his "wavy hair". His favorite sayine was, How you gonna act?".
Floyd worked long and hard for over 30 years at Nagel's Mill in Harmony, Maryland. You could find him anywhere, working in the mill, on the tractors, plowing fields, planting, gardening, tending the animals. etc. but you would never find him resting. He worked until his health began to fail and even then worked accasionally at Nagel's Hardware Store.
*He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Katherine Adams Nichols; one step-daughter, Jean Brummell, Denton, MD; one step son-in-0law, Fred Burmmell, Sr., Denton, MD; one brother, Frank Nichols, Preston, MD; one sister, Alice Adams, Denton, MD; one brother-in-law, Lewis Adams, Denton, MD; one brother and three sisters preceded him in death, Kemp, Virginia, Alice, and Lennie. Floyd also leaves to mourn four grandchildren, Fred Brummell, Jr., Derick Brummell, Shelton Brummell, Kevin Brummell; 4 great-grandchildren, Orlando, Kevin, Sierra, Derick Jr., and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2001 at 1p.m. at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg. Firneds may call the Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. on Friday.
Pierce, Everett Lee
Everett Lee Pierce, 81, of Conowingo, MD, died Thursday July 5, 2001 at John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.
Mr. Pierce, the son of the late Steward & Elizabeth Pierce, was born on January 7, 1920 in Fairfield, PA. He was a member of the Local Carpenter’s Union #626 of Wilmington, DE for 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Lula I. Pierce of Conowingo; 2 sons, William Lee Pierce of Conowingo and Dennis Everett Pierce of Quarryville, PA; 2 daughters, Bertha Elizabeth Sheets of Conowingo and Arlene Alice Stemple of Rising Sun; 1 sister, Dorothy Holbrook of Rising Sun; 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday July 9, 2001 at R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun where friends may call one hour prior. Rev. Mack Arnold will be officiating. Burial will be in Brookview cemetery in Rising Sun.

Wongus, Jr., Leon Harrison
Leon Harrison Wongus, Jr., "Chestnut" son of the late Leon and Estella Goldie Wongus was born April 29, 1939 in Dorchester County. He departed this life, Sunday July 8th at his home in Seaford, DE.
He attended the public schools of Dorchester County. He was a farm contractor for many years going in various states to harvest crops.
He met and married
the former Annie Mae Grier in Rubonia, Florida in 1962.
Chestnut, as most people called him, was a happy go lucky person . He loved people and enjoyed laughing and talking with you whenever you saw him.
He leaves to mourn a son, Kevin Smith of Cambridge, MD, a daughter in-law, Monica, son Clifford Smith, of Seaford, DE, daughter -in-law Pauline, three grandsons, Tyrone, David and Lavor, children, Faye, Elenora, Helen, Jessie, Rachel, Ellawege, Gregory, Sherree, Freddie, Ethel and Niecie and a host of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, two sisters, Linda of Federalsburg, MD, and Joyce of Preston, MD, a god-son, James Sampson, ten uncles, Alexander Wongus (Geneva) of Mardela Springs, MD, Nathaniel Wongus (Alice), John Sampson, Jr. (Roberta), William A. Sampson (Bensacola), and Andrew Sampson all of Cambridge, MD, Gaines Webb, Rev. Raymond Taylor, and Wendell Jones, eight aunts, Elaine Stafford, Ella Mae Cornish, and Barbara Cummys, all of Cambridge, MD, Bessie Jones, Evelyn Waples, Elberta Waples, Hester Ann and Sara Taylor, a mother-in-law, Serleon Grier, a father-in-law, Kapus Paul Grier, a sister-in-law, Pamela, three brothers-in-law, Michael Lowe and Verbie Grier both of Florida, and James Grier of California, and a very close friend, Sherry, and a host of other relatives and close friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 14, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Refuge Temple Revivial Center in Seaford, Delaware. Reverend Raymond Taylor officiated. Interment was in Federal Hill cemetery in Federalsburg, Maryland.
Thompson, Josephine Mae
Sis. Josephine Mae Thompson known as "Mom Josie" as we called her, of Cambridge, MD, daughter of the late John Gaskins and the late Mattie Gaskins was born March 25, 1925 in Thomasville, Georgia.
She departed this life on Tuesday, July 14, 2001 at Mallard Bay Institute in Cambridge, MD.
Sis. Josie reeeivd her education in the public schools in Thomas County, Georgia.
Sis. Josie also was a missionary. She always was helping and giving advice to others.
She was always full of love. She gave lots of love to kids that didn't have a home. She took them in. Mom Josie worked hard in domestic work, but most of all she worked for God. She was saved by Grace in the 1970's and has been on the front line ever since.
She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, Robert L. Thompson of Cambridge, a brother John Gaskins, a sister, Rose Pettis, seven stepchildren, Willie Thompson of East New Market, Brannie Greene of Orlando, FL, Robert Thompson, Jr. of St. Michaels, MD, Agnes Barnett of Cambridge, MD, Toby Helen Freeman of Easton, MD, Hattie Boston of Orlando, Florida, and Eddie Thompson of Easton, MD. One son, Jimmy Pettis, Georgia and three brothers, Tommy Gabriel, James Gaskins, and Jessie Gabriel and four sisters, Sallie Mae Gabriel, Alberta Gaskins, Amy Talor, and Emma Sanders, all from Thomasville, Georgia preceded her in death.
Mom Josie also leaves to mourn many nieces and great-nieces, and family and freinds.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 14, 2001 at 1p.m. at the St. Lukes Church of God in Christ in Federalsburg, Maryland. Reverend Clarence Wallace officiated. Interment was in Federal Hill cemetery in Federalsburg.
Powers, Emma Frances
Emma Frances Powers, 61, of Rising Sun, MD, died Tuesday July 17, 2001 at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD.
Mrs. Powers was born on October 5, 1939 in Pulaski, Virginia.
She is survived by her husband, Guy Lee Powers of Rising Sun; mother, Hallie Reva Burnett of Rising Sun; 2 daughters, Sharon Lee Jenkins of Elkton, MD and Shelly Rae Barrett of Colora, MD; 2 brothers, Kenneth Leon Alley of Middletown, DE and Charles Norman Burnett of Richmond, VA; 4 grandchildren, Barry Jenkins, Jr., Chisa Jenkins, Tiffanie Barrett and Stefanie Barrett; and 1 great grandson, Adrian Darnell Wilmot, Jr.
She is preceded in death by her father, Walter Lee Alley and a daughter, Sandra Jo Powers who passed away in 1977.
Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday July 20, 2001 at R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun where friends may call Thursday evening from 7 – 9 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Baptist cemetery, Rising Sun, MD.
Torbert, Heather Covell
Heather Covell Torbert of Dover died Sunday, July 8, 2001 in Kent General Hospital. She was 66.
Ms. Torbert was born in Orange, New Jersey on January 5, 1935 to the late Leonard Augustus Covell and Elizabeth Milbourne Heather Covell. She grew up in Marydel, Maryland and had attended Dover High School. She graduated Fairfax Hall Junior College in Fairfax, Virginia. She had attended Goucher College in Baltimore for two years. She had lived in Dover since 1957.
Ms. Torbert worked as a secretary/receptionist for Catholic Charities in Dover. She also worked for and did volunteer work at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover.
She is survived by a son, William "Bill" Covell Torbert of Dover; a daughter, Lisa HeatherTorbert of Dover; a grandson, Christopher Schellinger of Dover; and a granddaughter, Elena Torbert of Dover.
Funeral Services will be held 11AM Thursday, July 12, 2001 in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd., Dover. Friends may call 7PM to 9PM Wednesday evening. Interment will be in Suddlersville cemetery, Suddlersville, MD.
