Dean, Charles R.

Charles R. Dean, 75, of Cambridge, passed away at his home early Thursday morning, July 19, 2001. He has been ill for the past six months.

He was born at Ragged Point on February 11, 1926, the son of the late Ray Whitmore and Sadie Warfield Dean. He was raised and attended public schools in Cambridge and in February of 1944 joined the U.S. Navy. Most of his time in the Navy was served in the South Pacific and he was discharged in January of 1946. As a young man Mr. Dean worked at Maguires Grocery in Cambridge. In 1988 he retired from Wire Belts in Easton, where he had been a night shift supervisor since the early 1970’s. Prior to that he had worked as a welder at Cambridge Wire Cloth.

He was a member of Dorchester Post 91 American Legion, Honorary Member of Rescue Fire Co., Life Member of Choptank Memorial Post 7460, V.F.W. and the V.F.W. National Home, Associate Member of F.O.P. Lodge 27, and was a Past Commander of District 4, V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife, the former Katherine “Kitty” Todd, to whom he was married on April 28, 1946, one daughter Frances E. Kuhn of Cambridge, two granddaughters, Kay E. Schmidt of Pasadena, MD and Katherine “Kitten” Young of Cambridge, five great-grandchildren, Ashley Young, Scott Cheesman, John Young Jr., Katie Cheesman, and Brooke Young. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a sister Norma Lee Andrews and a brother George E. Dean.

A funeral service will be conducted in the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans cemetery on Monday morning, July 23 at 11 o’clock by Rev. Douglas M. Ridley. There will be no viewing. Memorials may be made to Easton Dialysis, 402 Marvel Court, Easton MD 21601.

Thomas, Hilda Matilda

Hilda Matilda Thomas of Vienna, MD, died Monday, June 18, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton, Easton, MD. She was 69.

She was born Oct. 23, 1931 in East New Market, the daughter of the late John and Hilda Knaack Tjaden.

She was the first class to graduate twelve years at East New Market High School, Class of 1949. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Gideons International Auxiliary and a member of the Cannon Mennonite Church in

Cannon, DE. She served thirty-five years in the Dorchester County 4-H.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Floyd E. Thomas, whom she married June 5, 1955, five children and their spouses, Everett and Debbie Thomas of Hurlock, John and Catrena Leigh Thomas of East New Market, Wayne and Trina Thomas of Vienna, Jane Thomas of Cambridge, and Nancy and Charles "Eddie" Bradford of East New Market, four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Tillie Frase and Minnie Frase, both of Preston, Agnes Rohrke of Vacaville, CA and Helen Jackson of East New Market, one brother,Jacob Tjaden of Tiffin, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews. Three brothers,

Hajo, Fred and John Tjaden preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 21, at 2:00 p.m. at the Cannon Mennonite Church in Cannon, DE, with Pastor Clinton Yoder officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg on Wednesday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Cannon Mennonite Church Building Fund, 12005 Woodbridge Rd., Greenwood, DE 19950 or the Gideons International, PO Box 1712, Easton, MD 21601.

Wallace, Beatrice McMullen

Beatrice McMullen Wallace of Federalsburg, MD, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at the Seaford Genesis ElderCare Center in Seaford. She was 77.

She was born Nov. 28, 1923 in Ridgely, MD, the daughter of the late Roland J. and Anna Buckle Smith. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Julian McMullen and Charles Wallace.

During her life she was employed by Campbell's Soup in Chestertown, MD.

She is survived by a daughter, Julia Bradley of Federalsburg, a son, Larry McMullen of Seaford, DE; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Smith of Crumpton, MD, and three sisters, Pearl Chaffinch of Seaford, Doris Marvel of Millington, DE, and Patricia Crew of Ellendale, DE. A son, William R. McMullen, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg with Rev. Ruth Tull officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows cemetery in Seaford, DE.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Bromley, Edith Virginia

Willards- Edith V. Bromley, 60, formerly of Salisbury, died Monday, June 11,2001 at the home of her daughter in Willards. Born in Deal Island, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Nellie Abbott Travers. Her husband George Bromley preceded her in death in 1991.

Edith was a homemaker. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Ann Scott and her husband Eugene of Willards, three granddaughters; Vanessa Jones of Salisbury, April Mansfield and Jennifer Scott, both of Willards, and three great-grandchildren, five brothers; Howard and Johnny Travers of Salisbury, Leroy Travers of DE, Bo Travers of VA. and Raymond Abbott of Federalsburg, three sisters; Loretta Mariner of Pocomoke, and Becky Travers and Dorothy Gray, both of Salisbury, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 2PM at Bounds Funeral Home on E. Main St in Salisbury. Friends may call Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM . The Rev. Howard Travers will officiate. Interment will be in Olivet Christian Church cemetery in Eden, Md.

Greenage, William G.

William G. Greenage, a prominent local farmer and Chairman of the Caroline Soil Conservation District, died of complications from diabetes on Saturday, June 23, 2001 at Memorial Hospital at Easton. He was 66 years old. He was born January 7, 1935 in Cheswold, DE to Thomas Greenage and Annabelle Sammons Greenage.

He began his farming career at the age of 13 working with Amish farmers in the Dover, DE area. His family moved to the Preston area in the early 1950's. When his family moved back to Dover, he remained in the Preston area, boarding with the Bailey family and working for C. Brooks Nagel. In the early 1960's, he began farming on his own. He married Joanne Meredith on January 26, 1963. In 1965, the family moved to Beechwood Farms in Preston, owned by Theodore and Helen Fletcher. He became a member of the Board of Supervisors at the Caroline Soil Conservation District in March of 1975. He was elected as Chairman of the Board on February 21, 1978 and retained that position until the present time. He was also a Director of the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts. He was very dedicated to agriculture and soil and water conservation and strived to have a solid working relationship with landowners and the many associated programs. One of his many accomplishments during his tenure was organizing the 50th anniversary celebration held in 1991. He was very supportive of the Public Drainage Association in Caroline County and instrumental in obtaining funding for the ditches. He retired from farming in 1999 because of health reasons.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne; one daughter, Claire Marie Bennett; one son, William Gordon Greenage, II; six grandchildren, Jonathan Ryan Noble, Samantha Renee Greenage, Warren Keith Bennett, Jr., William Matthew Bennett, Thomas Robert Greenage, and Michael Bannister Greenage, all from Preston, and one brother, John Reggs Greenage of Dover, DE. His parents and a brother, Harold Thomas Greenage, preceded him in death.

Funeral Services for him will be held on Friday, June 29, 2001 at 1pm at Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6- 9 p.m.The Reverend Denzil Cheek and David Nagel will officiate. Burial will be a Chestnut Grove Methodist Church in Federalsburg. Pallbearers will be William Greenage, II, David Nagel, Greg Russell, Michael Hubbard, Dawson Hubbard, R.J. Meredith, and Honorary pallbearers will be Tyler Horner and Wheatley Neal.

Memorial Contributions can be made to Chestnut Grove Methodist Church, 5170 Long Swamp Road, Federalsburg, MD 21632.

Gibbons, Kevin Alan

Mr. Kevin A. Gibbons, 21, of Ijamsville died on Sunday, June 24, as a result of injuries recieved from a motorcycle accident.

Born on November 28, 1979, in Silver Spring, MD he was the son of Michael J. and Linda S. Littlefield Gibbons of Ijamsville. Mr. Gibbons was a student at Devry Technologic Institute in Columbus, Ohio where he was studying to become an electronic technician. He was a 1998 graduate of Linganore High School.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother, William Gibbons and a sister, Tracie Gibbons both of Ijamsville; maternal grandparents Frank and Anna Littlefield of Annapolis and an uncle, Thomas Littlefield and wife Sandee also of Annapolis.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM on Wednesday, June 27, at Stauffer Funeral Home,

8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy

Inurnrment will be private at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Eck, Sandy S.

Sandy S. Eck, 40, of Colora, MD, died Saturday July 7, 2001.

Mrs. Eck, a homemaker, was born on October 6, 1960 in Santa Maria, California.

She is survived by her parents, Leo J. & Jean V. Tholl of Magnolia, DE; a daughter, Mandy Eck of Colora; and a brother, Jeffrey Tholl of Boca Raton, FL.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William B. Eck, III who passed away in 1998.

Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday July 13th at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 150 S. Queen St., Rising Sun. Family and friends may call Thursday evening from 7 – 9 p.m. at R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD. Burial will be in Brookview cemetery, Rising Sun, MD.

Jones, Carolyn V.

Carolyn V. Jones, 68, of Cambridge, passed away early Tuesday morning at Dorchester General Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Donald K. Jones.

She was born in Cambridge on August 7, 1932, the daughter of the late Edward Pursley and Verene Wirz Vickers. She was a lifelong resident of Cambridge and a 1949 graduate of Cambridge High School. She was affiliated with the Jones Implement Co., serving as Secretary/Treasurer for many years until retiring six years ago. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, to whom she was married on July 28, 1950, one daughter; Debbie Robbins of Woolford, three sons; Donald K. Jones Jr. of Church Creek, A. Dennis Jones of East New Market, and Michael R. Jones of Cambridge, nine grandchildren; Ritchie Robbins, Amy Robbins, Denny Jones, Leslie Tolley, Erica Jones, Christy Jones, Christopher Jones, Jenna Jones, and Ryan Jones, two sisters; Jean Foxwell (Maryanov?) and Barbara Wozny, both of Cambridge, and one brother Donald W. “Sonny” Vickers of Cambridge. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Foxwell and Rosalena “Nookie” Whiteley, and one brother Edward P. “Dinky” Vickers, Jr.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 o’clock Friday morning at Dorchester Memorial Park by Rev. Joan P. Evans. There will be no viewing. Memorials may be made to either the Immanuel United Church of Christ, 900 Peachblossom Ave., Cambridge MD 21613 or the American Lung Association, 209 East Market St., Salisbury MD 21801-4948. Arrangements are by Thomas Funeral Home, P.A.

Sier, Della V.

Mrs. Della Viola Sier, 74, of Mt. Airy died on Sunday, July 8, at Lorien Life Center, Mt. Airy. She was the wife of the late Maynard E. Sier who died in 1968.

Born on November 8, 1926, in LeGore, Md she was the daughter the late Lewis W. and Clara Viola Fockler Fritz Mrs. Sier was a homemaker.

Surviving are eleven children; Walter E. Runkles of Emmitsburg, Betty J. Nipper and husband Silas of Mt. Airy, Martha L. Sier of New Market, Beaver E. Sier also of New Market, Doris M. Veit of New Windsor, Maynard E. Sier, Jr. and wife Carol of Union Bridge, Wayne D.

Sier of Mt. Airy, Leonard E. Sier and wife Billie Jo of Walkersville, Della V. Leach and husband Mike of Parker, PA, Norman J. Sier of New Market and Claude F. Sier and wife Barbara of Mt. Airy; fourteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Norman Sier of Ijamsville; four sisters-in-law, Patricia Fritz of Mt. Airy, Lillian Sier of Mt. Airy, Madeline Hargett of Ijamsville and Claudia Fogle and Louise Duvall both of Frederick. Mrs. Sier was preceded in death by a brother, Lester W. Fritz.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Wednesday, July 11, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy where funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 12, beginning at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Wallace Lusk of Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, Mt. Airy will officiate.

Interment will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Frederick.
