September 30, 2000

Jonibel Trelease Blair born July 14, 1910 died peacefully in her sleep September 30, 2000. She was 90 years old.

She was the former Jonibel Trelease daughter of Sadie Mai Cornelius Trelease and Frank "Skipper" Johnson Trelease. Joniel was born in St. Louis, Missouri at the Presidents home in the Botanical Gardens (formerly Shaw Gardens). Jonibel spent her youth in many areas of the country including Buffalo, New York, Mont Claire, New Jersey and Hot Springs, Arkansas. Jonibel graduated from Mont Claire High School in 1929 and Hood College in Frederick, Maryland in 1933.

After graduation she moved with her family to Colorado Springs, Colorado where she enjoyed volunteer work with children and extensive travel with her family. One of her favorite trips was taking the Grace Line from Washington State to Mont Claire, New Jersey traveling through the Panama Canal. Jonibel married Arthur Dayton Blair in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1937. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Blair made their home in Seattle, Washington, St. Louis, Missouri, Evanston,Illinois and Reading, Pennsylvania until settling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1946 where she became the proud mother of Donald Dayton Blair.

In 1958 Jonibel and her son moved to Oxford, Maryland where she lived until 1970, when she moved to Easton for the remainder of her life. Jonibel was an Extension Agent in Talbot County for many years attending to the youth of the community. She was also a Social Worker with the AFDC program until retirement in 1975 . Jonibel was the owner of the 'Busy Hands Art and Crafts Store' in Easton from 1977 until 1989. She enjoyed many artistic hobbies. She studied bird carving with Ed Burns and considered it her favorite hobby. She was featured with many of her bird carving friends in the "Eastern Shore Women Magazine". She was a Past President and former member of the Soropitimist Club in Talbot County and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary.

Jonibel will be missed by her many friends and her devoted and loving son Donald D. Blair, Sr. his wife Kimberley S. Blair and her grandson D.Dayton Blair, Jr of Easton and her niece Sally M. Emery of New York. She is predeceased by her parents, brother Frank Trelease of Cheyenne, Wyoming and sister Jule T. Emery of Baltimore, Maryland. Memorial

Services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Saturday, October 7th at 2:00 PM. Burial will be private in Oxford cemetery, Oxford.

Edward (Ed) Brenneman Henry, of Easton, died at his home on Saturday, September 30, 2000. He was 69.

Born In Philadelphia, Pa, August 14, 1931, he was the son of the late J. Earle, Sr. and Mary C. Brenneman Henry. After graduating from Easton High School in 1948, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950. He served first on a PCE and then on the U.S.S. Menard APA 201. Following his release from active duty in June of 1954, he returned to Easton where, he married the joy of his life, Emily Louise Thom, on May 7, 1955.

They made their home in the Easton area where he worked for John Henry as a mechanic, for Talbot Sales as a Parts Manager and mechanic and finally, for Centreville Tag-A-Long Trailers where he was a welder and draftsman and then a consultant following his retirement in 1995.

A member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Cordova, where he served on the Vestry, the Church Council and as an usher, he was also a Life Member of the Talbot Post #70, American Legion and the E. E. Streets Memorial Post #5118, V.F.W., both in Easton. He was also a member of the Model "T" Club and the Tri-County Ruritan Club and Easton Elks Lodge #1622, BPOE. His Charter Memberships included the Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Association and the U.S.S. Menard APA 201 Reunion of which he was President at the time of his death.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 45 years, Emily, are a daughter Carolyn Lane and her husband, Roy, of Easton; a brother, James E. Henry, Jr., of Easton and a granddaughter, Karyn Ashley Lane of Easton.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 4th, at 11 A. M. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Cordova. Friends may call on Tuesday, October 2nd, from 7 - 9 P.M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton and one hour prior to the service at the church. An Elks Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 8 P.M. Burial will be at St. Paul's Church cemetery, Cordova. Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 368, Cordova, Md. 21625.

William Franklin Wintker of Easton died on September 30, 2000 in Shreveport, LA. He was 72.

Born on December 3, 1927 in Madison, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Albert J. and Delphine Marbut Wintker. Following his graduation from Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 to 1947. After his honorable discharge, he attended Loyola College in Baltimore where he received a degree in Business Administration in 1950.

He married the former Ruth Friedemann in August 1949 and they made their home in Baltimore. In 1954, he began working for the State of Maryland, Division of Parole and Probation as a Harford County agent and later as a warrant officer. In 1960, he received a promotion to Regional Administrator of the Eastern Shore, and he moved to Easton. He retired in 1982 after 28 years of service. Mrs. Wintker died in June 1996. Mr. Wintker was a member of the B.P.O. Elks, Lodge #1622, the E.E. Streets Memorial Post #5118, V.F.W., the American Legion Post 70, Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #1520, and the Loyola College Alumni Association.

Mr. Wintker is survived by two daughters, Cynthia W. Healy of Arnold, and Susan W. Poling of Easton; a sister, Celeste Martin of Minden, LA; and four grandsons. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Cathedral in Easton on Thursday, October 5, 2000 at 11:30 AM. Friends may call on Wednesday evening at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton from 7-9 PM where an Elks Memorial Service will be held at 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Spring Hill cemetery, Easton. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

September 29, 2000

Annabell P. Pinder of Dogwood Village, Sudlersville, MD. Died Friday, September 29, 2000 in her home of heart failure, she was 81 years old.

Mrs. Pinder was born in Blanco, DE. The daughter of the late George and Katie Ellingsworth Pinder. Mrs. Pinder worked in farming and was the store manger at Silco's Department Store in Centreville, MD and also in Chestertown, MD after Silco's closed Mrs. Pinder worked for K-Mart in Dover, DE.

Mrs. Pinder enjoyed needlepoint and crocheting; she loved collecting roosters, and taking pictures. She enjoyed working in her garden and her flowers. Mrs. Pinder is preceded in death by her husband William J Pinder in 1986.

She is survived by 1 daughter; Merita Ann Crew and her husband David of Sudlersville, MD, 1 son Robert W. "Shorty" Pinder and his wife Ginny of Henderson, MD, 3 grandchildren Justin Crew of Sudlersville, MD, Lora Robbins of Ridgley, MD and Julie Crew of Sudlersville, MD. 3 great grandchildren; Ryan and Megan Robbins and Bradley Cowing.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 4th, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. from the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress Street, Millington, MD, where friends and family may call on Tuesday Evening from 7-9 p.m. Interment will be in the Sudlersville cemetery, Sudlersville, MD.

September 28, 2000

Bertha Virginia Cox of Chesapeake City, died at the Laurelwood Nursing Home Elkton, MD on Thursday, September 28, 2000. She was 85.

Born in Earleville on October 30, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Hinson and Bertha Virginia Bailey. She had lived the majority of her life in Cecil County. She married Earl H. Cox and Mr. Cox died in 1970. During World War II she had worked at the National Fireworks Plant in Elkton and following the war had worked as a sewer at Nanette Manufacturing until her retirement in the 1970’s.She had been active in the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and the Town Point United Methodist Church and had a busy life raising her flowers and enjoying her family and loved ones.

Mrs. Cox is survived by a daughter and Joyce Stansfield and her husband, Thomas Stansfield of Elkton; a grandson, Andy Stansfield of Frostburg State University, two sisters, Helen Carnevale of Wilmington, DE and Viola Smith of Newark, DE. In addition to her husband, she had been preceeded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Cecilton, MD on Sunday, October 1, 2000 at 2:00 PM where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at St. Paul’s cemetery, Earleville, MD. Memorial donations may be made to Northern Chesapeake Hospice of Cecil County, 111 Howard Street, Elkton, MD 21921

September 27, 2000

James Leroy Whitlock of Middletown, DE, formerly of Cecilton died at the Christiana Medical Center, New Castle, DE on Wednesday, September 27, 2000. He was 62.

Born April 29, 1938 in Elkton, MD he was the son of the late George and Sophia Rose Whitlock. He was raised and schooled in Cecilton and later moved to Middletown where he had resided for over 40 years. He had worked on the assembly line at Chrysler in Newark, DE for 28 years, retiring in 1995. Mr. Whitlock was an avid hunter and loved baseball and football. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Middletown , a member of UAW Local #1183 and was a member of the Middletown Volunteer Fire Company. He was very devoted to his family and enjoyed his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Whitlock is survived by his wife of 33 years, Donna Mae Whitlock; three daughters, Lisa Aldridge and Carol Whitlock, both of Middletown, DE and Brenda Armstrong of Earleville, MD; three brothers, Charles Whitlock and Robert Whitlock, both of Middletown, DE and William Whitlock of FL; a sister, Mary Dixon of Middletown, DE; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was pre-deceased by two brothers and a sister.

Funeral Services will be held at the Zion Church on Monday, October 2, 2000 at 1:00 PM. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Cecilton, MD on Sunday, October 1, 2000 from 7:00 ­ 9:00 PM. Burial will be at Zion cemetery, Cecilton, MD.

September 26, 2000

Thomas L. "Tommy Turtle" Mercer of Rock Hall, MD formally of Millington, MD died on Tuesday, September 26, 2000 in the University of MD Hospital in Baltimore, MD of Heart Failure. He was 53 years old.

Mr. Mercer was born in Chestertown, MD. He is the son of the late Thomas H. and Mary C. Mercer. Mr. Mercer was a self employed paintin contrator and was most popular by his nickname "Tommy Turtle". Mr. Mercer enjoyed fishing and hunting, he also enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He was a life member of the National Rifle association.

Mr. Mercer is survived by his companion for 30 years Susan Price, 1 daughter; Tony Mercer of Rock Hall MD; 4 brothers John R. Patrick of Millington, MD, John Mercer and Mike Mercer both of Rock Hall, MD and Billy Mercer of Fairlee, MD, 2 sisters; Linda Chapman of Townsend, DE and Joan M. Bell of Church Hill, MD. 3 grandchildren his step-mother Ann Mercer of Rock Hall, MD and his devoted friend Sparky and a special friend Pop Pop Herbert Harbisen.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 29, at 1:00 p.m. from the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., where friends and family may call 1 hour prior to services. Friends and family may also call Thursday Evening from 7-9p.m. in the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress Street, Millington, MD. Interment will be at Wesley Chapel cemetery, Rock Hall, MD.

September 28, 2000

James Ralph Sharpe of Oxford, a former executive vice president of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, died of leukemia on Thursday, at Talbot Hospice House, Easton. He was 71.

Born on April 15, 1929 in Columbus, OH, he was the son of the late Leslie P. and Marion Hall Sharpe. After receiving an engineering degree from Ohio State University, he served for three years as a U.S. Navy minesweeping officer during the Korean conflict. Mr. Sharpe spent most of his professional career with Dravo Corp. of Pittsburgh, where he became senior vice president and president of the subsidiary company, Dravo Engineers and Constructors. He was responsible for the design and construction of large industrial, power and mining projects throughout much of the world. He later served nearly 10 years in the Reagan and Bush administrations in Washington as executive vice president of the Export-Import Bank of the United States.

He and his wife retired to their home in Oxford in 1992. He was a volunteer with the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels and the Oxford Community Center.

Mr. Sharpe is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sally Knorr Sharpe; their son, James Douglas Sharpe of Annapolis; and a younger sister, Carolyn L. Batty of Trumbull, Ct..

The family will receive visitors at the Sharpe home on Wilson Street in Oxford on Sunday, Oct. 1 from 2 to 4 PM. A Private graveside service will be held on Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Community Center, P.O. Box 308, Oxford, MD 21654.

September 25, 2000

A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated for Louis Kennard Rhodes, Jr., formerly of Queenstown, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Queenstown on Friday, September 29, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Mr. Rhodes died on Monday, September 25, 2000 in Hollywood, FL. He was 87.

Born January 10, 1913 near Queenstown, MD, he was the son of the late Kennard and Florence McConnor Rhodes. He was the second of six children and grew up on the farm of hard work, hard play, strong family ties and high values and discipline. He graduated from Queenstown Grammar School in 1926 and graduated from Centreville High School in 1930. While there he lettered in soccer, baseball and track. Having received a full four year scholarship to western Maryland College he graduated with a B.A. Degree in 1934, while there he lettered in soccer and tennis.

In 1935 he taught at Stevensville High School and in 1941 received a M.Ed. Degree from the University of Maryland. In 1942 he was drafted after refusing a Navy Commission. He served in the U.S. Army in Ft. Meade, Keesler Field, Biloxi, MS, Weather observer at Harlingen, TX, Gunnery School and then was ordered to Officer Candidate School in Miami, Fl and graduated as 2nd Lt. He was sent to Clarion State College to train students academically for Air Corps Flight Training, shipped to the South Pacific; New guinea and to Clark Field, Manila and was involved in the staging for invasion of Japan at Subic Bay when peace was declared. He was a Captain of the U.S. Army upon his discharge in 1946.

Following is release from active duty he returned to Maryland and taught at Montgomery Blair High in Silver Spring, MD, including the first psychology course in Maryland public schools. During his career he was Assistant Principal and worked closely with supervision and curriculum. In 1972 he retired and began running tours and cruises for the Teacher’s Association. He was a member of Holy Name Men’s club; Newman Club Advisor; Navy League, Kiwanis, where he received his pin for 41 years of perfect attendance. He was on the original Scholarship Committee of the Silver Spring Club of which he served as President in the Kiwanis 50th Anniversary Year. In 1978 he moved to Hollywood, FL.

Mr. Rhodes was pre-deceased by his wife, the former Mary Catherine Frey of Columbus, OH whom he married on November 4, 1950. Mrs. Rhodes died January 8, 1985. Mr. Rhodes is survived by two brothers, Dr. Harry C. Rhodes and J. Thomas Rhodes, Sr., both of Queenstown; a sister, Margaret Alice Rhodes Brantley of Grasonville and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be at St. Peter’s Church cemetery, Queenstown. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Peter’s cemetery Trust, P.O. Box 167, Queenstown, MD 21658 or the Mary and Ken Rhodes Hollywood Kiwanis Scholarship Fund, Inc., c/o Mr. Dennis Koffler, 3900 Hollywoood Blvd., Penthouse North, Hollywood, Fl 33021.

Gladys Ealer Young of St. Michaels died on Monday, September 25, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 83.

Born in Belfast, PA on January 22, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Lydia Ealer Nicholas. Following her marriage to Roy Clifford Young in April 1935, she made her home in Belfast, PA, until moving to Elkton in 1940. In 1946, she and her husband opened a restaurant called Hershey's Store, which remained open until 1970 when they moved to St. Michaels. She and her husband ran the Cove Restaurant, located inside the Hudson's Pharmacy until she retired in 1985. Mr. Young died in November 1988.

Mrs. Young was a member of the St. Luke's United Methodist Church in St. Michaels. She was also a member for over 50 years of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lodge #84, Elkton.

Mrs. Young is survived by a daughter, Sharon M. Young of St. Michaels; two sons, Donald R. Young of St. Michaels and Duane R. Young of Smyrna, DE; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Friday, September 29, 2000 at 2:00 PM. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Oxford cemetery, Oxford, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Michaels Ambulance Fund, 1001 South Talbot Street, St. Michaels, MD 21663 or the St. Luke's building Fund, P.O. Box 207, St. Michaels, MD 21663.
