DeMar, Betty Lee Brittingham

Betty Lee Brittingham DeMar, 80, of Pocomoke City, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at her residence of natural causes.

Born February 26, 1921 in Pocomoke City, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Webster and Ethel Lee Shreaves Brittingham.

Mrs. DeMar was a member of the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church in Rehobeth, MD where she was a Deacon and an Elder. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed her family and serving her Lord by arranging flowers for her church and church family.

She is survived by her husband, William H. DeMar; two children, Sharon DeMar Yeagle of Pocomoke City and William Arthur DeMar and his wife Kim of Snow Hill; two grandchildren, April DeMar of Crisfield and Brock DeMar Yeagle of Pocomoke City and one great-grandson, Adam Gibson of Crisfield. One brother, Victor Shreaves Brittingham, preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held Monday, May 21, 2001 at 2:00 pm at the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church in Rehobeth, MD where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

If desired, contributions may be made in her memory to the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church, c/o Robert Hess, 32203 Hess Rd., Marion Station, MD 21838.

Phillips, Carroll Stanford

Carroll Stanford Phillips, 86, of Pocomoke City, died Friday, May 18, 2001 at Manokin Manor Nursing Home in Princess Anne, MD.

Born in Snow Hill, MD he was the son of the late Clarence Alvin and Cora Griffin Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was a member of the First Baptist Church and the American Legion Post #93 in Pocomoke City.

He is survived by two sisters, Elma Phillips Taylor of Manokin Manor and formerly of Greenbackville, VA; Indiana Phillips Massey of Stockton, MD and a devoted friend, Claudia Lewis of Pocomoke City, MD. A sister, Mabel Phillips Pruitt and a brother, William Alvin Phillips preceded him in death.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist cemetery in Pocomoke City. The Rev. Paul Elligson will officiate.

Atkins, Sr., William Marvin

William Marvin Atkins, Sr., 65, of New Church, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born April 13, 1936 in West Virginia, he was the son of the late William Alvin and Beatrice Frazier Atkins.

He served in the United States Air Force for 14 years, and was a member of the Sign Post United Methodist Church. He was an avid collector of model trucks.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Irene Atkins of New Church; tow daughters and their husbands, Mary Helen and Elmer Johnson of Atlantic and Debbie and Allen Clark of Chincoteague; tow sons, Billy Atkins of Jacksonville, FL and Steven Atkins and his wife Laura of Parksley; one brother Don Atkins of Princeton, WV; two sisters, Phyllis Bernal of Nashville, TN and Pam Donithan of Bluefield, WV; 7 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter and 5 nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 2:00 PM at the Holloway Melson Funeral Home in Pocomoke City where friends may call Tuesday from 7-9:00 pm and one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Paul Elligson will officiate. Interment will follow in John W. Taylor Memorial cemetery in Temperanceville, VA.

If desired, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, 3120 Timanus Lane, Suite 106, Baltimore, MD 21244.

Parsons, Mabel Lynch

Mabel Lynch Parsons, 81, of Pittsville, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at Berlin Nursing Home. Born in Whiton, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Charles P. Timmons and Nora L. Littleton Timmons.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, John E. Parsons, of Pittsville; a daughter, Connie V. Hudson; two grandchildren, Lisa Hudson and Philip Hudson; two great-grandchildren, Brittany Hudson and Brandon Hudson; a brother and his wife, Percy and Virginia Timmons, all of Pittsville, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Parsons was preceded in death by three brothers: Ersel, Lester, and Lawrence Timmons, and a sister, Ethel Lewis.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2004 at 2:30 PM at Farlow cemetery, in Pittsville. The Rev. Paul H. Sherwood will officiate. Visitation will be from 1-2 PM at Holloway Funeral Home, in Salisbury.

Arrangements are being handled by Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Rd., Salisbury, MD 21804.

Travers, Lillian G.

Lillian G. Travers, 82 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Friday January 16, 2004. She was born in Cambridge on October 14, 1921 and was a daughter of the late Axel Rudolph and Esther Clausen Peterson.

She attended schools in Cambridge, having graduated from Cambridge High school in 1938. On April 29, 1942 she was married to P. Hamilton Travers of Madison. He passed away on October 8, 1967. For a number of years she worked as a bookkeeper and stenographer for the State of Maryland. She later worked at Airpax in Cambridge doing clerical work. Mrs. Travers was a member of the Madison United Methodist Church. She had been a resident at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge for several years, and was a patient at Dorchester General Hospital where she passed away early Friday morning.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lou Heintzelman and her husband Don Heintzelman of Woolford, two sons, Philip H. Travers of Wye Mills and Harold W. Travers of Madison; four grandchildren, Angela Travers Stone and her husband Paul Stone of Henderson, Nevada, Philip H. Travers III and his wife Val Travers of Stevensville, Harold W. Travers, Jr. and Chad H. Travers both of Madison; two great grandchildren, Ivy stone and Eden Stone of Henderson, Nevada. She is also survived by three sisters, Ellen McLane of Crisfield, Edna Lord of Laurel, DE and Betty Conkins of Crookston, Minnesota and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Peterson and a daughter in law Joyce Travers.

A Graveside service will be held on Monday afternoon at 2:00 PM at Dorchester Memorial Park with the Rev. Robert G. Kirkley officiating. Memorial Contributions may be made either to the Alzheimer's Assoc. 213 W. Main Street # 205, Salisbury, MD 21801 or to the Madison United Methodist Church, 1407 Taylors Island Road, Madison, MD 21648. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Hughes, Arnold

In the quietness and tranquility of his home, S/Sgt (Ret.) Arnold Hughes joined his wife of 26 years, Mary Hill Hughes after a two month interval of separation. God knew his pain, and Sunday, January 11, 2004, he was granted a path leading to her place in heaven. S/Sgt. Hughes was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 27, 1930, to the late Mabel Jones Hughes and Herman Hughes.

He was educated in the school system of that state receiving his primary and secondary studies. After completing his education, he became a member of the United States Army and faithfully served his country for 26 years. His assignments included Europe, Asia, and he was a Korean War Veteran. He was stationed at various post in the United States and was responsible for training enlisted servicemen. After his military duties, he was employed at American Cyanamid and Aberdeen Proving Ground as a leader of material and a classifier.

He was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church and sang with the male choir. He had the position as Men's Day president, which he enjoyed. He was also a member of the Trustee Board and church transportation. He was a life time member of the V.F.W, Chesapeake Lodge #314 and Chief Shop Steward at APG of Union 2424.

S/Sgt (Ret.) Hughes was always direct and precise in his every day demeanor. When he wanted the task done, he expected promptness and positive effects. He knew what he wanted and how to contact reliable sources. He always had an interest in sports for the youth and young adult Little League, and played an integral part in Harford County organizations.

He leaves to mourn 1 son; Jeffery Hughes, North East, MD; 3 brothers, Ray Hughes of Cerulan, KY, John Wesley Hughes (Sonora), and Herman Hughes, Chicago, IL; 2 sisters, Mary Hughes, Chicago, IL, and Barbara Anderson of Louisville, KY; 1 stepson Emory Crawford (Bernadine) of Las Cruces, New Mexico; 1 sister-in-law, Yvonne Wyatt (George) of Bel Air, MD; 2 brothers-in-law, Edward Stansbury (Emily) of Bel Air, MD; and Albert Johnson, Baltimore, Maryland; 6 grandchildren, Nikeshia Crawford of Bossier, LA, Aaron Crawford of Washington, DC, Yvonnne Thorton of Baltimore, Maryland, Emory Crawford, III, Michael Crawford of El Paso, Texas, and Amanda Matines of San Diego, CA; 1 Godson, Brad Menefee; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and his brother James Hughes.

Service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday January 17, 2004 at St. James AME Church, 617 Green Street, Havre de Grace, MD where friends may call two hours prior. Burial will be in Harford Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, MD.

BETTY LEE WASSER

Salisbury- Betty Lee Wasser, 82, of Salisbury died Monday, February 2,2004 at her home. Born in Clarksburg, WV she was the daughter of the late Herbert Norris Johnston and Jessie Lee Queen Johnston.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years Donald C. Wasser, five children; Kurt Wasser and his wife Jeanne of Spokane, WA, Rebecca Chappelle and her husband John of Salisbury, Adrienne Showker and her husband Ted of Manassas, VA, Irgrid Wasser of Herndon, VA, and Bradley Wasser and his wife Terri of Taluca Lake, CA, ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a sister Ruth Duncan of Lagrande, GA, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Buck Johnston.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 5:30 PM at the Wasser home, where friends may call from 4-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802 or the Wellness Community in Salisbury. Arrangements are being handled by the staff of Bounds Funeral Home.

Sloan, Bruce E.

Bruce E. Sloan, 43, of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away on Friday, February 20, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Washington D.C. on November 16, 1960 and was the son of James E. and the late Jean Whitney Sloan who passed away on November 25, 2003.

Mr. Sloan graduated from Largo Senior High School in 1978. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1978 until 1982. He worked as a collection agent for a telecheck company and last with T Mobile as a tech representative. He enjoyed camping and sports.

He is survived by his father, James E. Sloan of East New Market, a sister, Pamela Ferrante of East New Market, a niece, Lauren Ferrante of East New Market and two nephews, Jason Ferrante and Bryan Ferrante both of East New Market.

A memorial service will be at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at the Maryland Veteran's cemetery in Hurlock. Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge are handling the arrangements.

Messick, Edith Ellen Farlow

Edith Ellen Farlow Messick Age: 79

Edith Ellen Farlow Messick, 79, died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at her home in Hebron. Born October 6, 1924 in Salisbury, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Edith Livingston Farlow.

Mrs. Messick was a graduate of Wicomico High School and Salisbury State Teachers College. On July 7, 1947, she married Russell L. Messick. She was a member of the Springhill Post 237 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed substitute teaching for Wicomico County Schools for many years, gardening, and doll and bear collecting. She will be sadly missed by her friends and family.

Mrs. Messick is survived by her husband of 56 years, Russell L. Messick; her children, Carmen L. Cantrell, of Kentucky, Kent L. Messick and his wife Sarah, of China, Troy L. Messick and his wife Sally Ann, of Ocean City; her grandchildren; Ryan Cantrell and his wife Amy, of North Carolina, Heather Cantrell of Kentucky, and Bradley, Graham, and Brice Messick of Ocean City; and great-grandchildren Tyler and Zachary; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a special friend, Wayne Breeding, and faithful caregivers, Rosalie Chamberlin, Nikki Clark and Margaret Donalds. She was preceded in death by her sisters; Lottie Farlow Agnew and Gertrude Farlow Hotten.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 23, 2004, 2:00 PM, at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Paul Sherwood will officiate. Interment will follow at Springhill Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to Coastal Hospice, P. O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.

Arrangements are being handled by Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Rd., Salisbury, MD 21804.

ROBERT L. JUSTICE, SR.

Fruitland- Robert L. Justice, Sr., 64, of Fruitland died Wednesday, March 17,2004 at Salisbury Genesis Eldercare. Born in Sharon, West Virginia he was the son of the late James and Alma Stone Justice.

Mr. Justice served in the United States Marine Corps. He was employed by Food Lion as a meat cutter until he left due to illness.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years Lynn Justice of Fruitland, two sons Robert L. " Bobby" Justice, Jr and his wife Jody of Delmar, DE and Jimmy R. Justice of Rehobeth Beach, a daughter Donna J. Buckler and her husband Richard of Georgetown, a stepdaughter Heather Lynn Hill of Fruitland, five grandchildren; Brandon Lee Peek, Rachel Leigh Buckler, Ashley Lynn Justice, Jennifer Lynn Justice, and Jimmy Seward, a brother David T. Justice of Salisbury, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday evening at 7 PM at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury. The Rev. J. Harvey Dixon will officiate.

Contributions may be made in memory of Bob to Salisbury Zoo/ Bens Red Swings, 1110 Woodland Road, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Lang, Marcia Ardis

Marcia Ardis Lang, 84, of Pocomoke City, died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at Hartley Hall Nursing Home in Pocomoke City.

Born February 20, 1920, in Pocomoke City, she was the daughter of the late James and Mamie Mariner Ardis. Her husband, Lester "Tip" Norman Lang, preceded her in death April 27, 1980.

She is survived a nephew, Raymond Ardis, of Hampton, VA.
