Cromwell-Hughes, Barbara T.

BARBARA TRYPHENA CROMWEll-HUGHES was born May 10, 1989 in Havre de Grace, Maryland to Horace Elkins and Frances Joyner Cromwell. After a lengthy illness, she was called home on Tuesday, August 28, 2001.

Barbara's childhood was spent in Havre de Grace, Maryland, where she attended Havre de Grace Colored Schools. She matriculated at Bowie State Teachers College and received a Masters Degree at Coppin State Teachers College, along with additional studies at the University of Delaware.

Barbara entered marriage to Vernard Hughes in 1968. Even though no children were born of this union, there were many special children in their lives. Barbara and Sonny enjoyed many common interests.

Barbara had varied work experiences and touched the lives of many friends, professionals and associates. She never knew a stranger.

Her work experiences were Social Security Administration and Montgomery Wards in Baltimore; Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, (A&P) Store and Deli-Mart in Havre de Grace; Free State Pace Track, Laurel, Maryland; Recreational Specialist - State Hospital in Philadelphia - Barbara'-s teaching experiences expand thru the city and, County School Systems in Baltimore. She ended her teaching career in the Colonial School District, New Castle Delaware in 1992.

Barbara was a sensitive, caring and giving person. She was blessed with the gift of caring. Even through her own illness, she took great pride in caring for her mother, family members and others.

She leaves to mourn, her loving and caring husband, Vernard (Sonny) Hughes, Havre de Grace, MD; 3 sisters, Patricia Griffin (Oliver Charles) Forest Heights, MD, Dr. Saundra C. Brunson (William) Newark, DE, and. Thurl Brenda Snell, Indianapolis, IN; a brother, Emil Elkins Cromwell (Lelia) Havre de Grace, MD; and a special cousin, Carol Bruce, Aberdeen, MD; brother-in-law, Willard Hughes (Marva) Cokesbury, MD; loving aunts, Mamie Hawkins, and Elizabeth Sawyer (Thomas); an uncle, Peter Joyner all of Havre de Grace, MD; one niece; 8 nephews; and 3 grand nephews; 1 grand niece; a special niece, Barbara girl friend known as Kirtra Bruce, Havre de Grace, MD; very dear friends, Barbara Fauntleroy, Joe Ward both of Aberdeen, MD, Odessa Phillips, Havre de Grace, MD, Christina Tillet, Baltimore, MD, Evelyn Walley, especially Shirley Collins, Havre de Grace, MD and other relatives and friends.

Services will be held 10am, Tuesday, September 4,2001 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 615 Congress Ave, Havre de Grace, MD. Family and friends may visit 6-8pm Monday September 3,2001 at Lisa Scott Funeral Home, 552 Lewis Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Burial will be in the St. James United cemetery, Havre de Grace, MD.

Scott, Jr., Howard L.
Navy

HOWARD LESLIE SCOTT, JR. age 75, of Aberdeen, MD, died August 27, 2001 at Lorien Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Belcamp, MD. He was born on September 30, 1925 to Howard Leslie Scott Sr., and Mabel Lee, in Lexington, Virginia.

A navy veteran of World War II, and a Purple Heart recipient, he served for more than 35 years as a civilian employee of Kirk Army Hospital, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Known to everybody as "Scottie", his sense of humor and playful demeanor was well known with everybody from his Sunday School kids to the elders of the church. He loved to sing in the choir and he gave many years of hard work and dedication to contribute to the life of Mt. Calvary Church. No job was ever too big or too small for "Scottie ".

In his last years, "Scottie " suffered from Alzheimer's disease, but it never robbed him of always trying to give you a smile. The family takes great comfort in knowing his spirit rests in God's hands and he will suffer no more.

Preceded in death by both parents, a son, a daughter, he is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Virginia M. Scott, Aberdeen, Maryland; 3 daughters, Rita Scott Wainwright, Aberdeen, Maryland, Linda J. Scott, Washington, DC, and Carolyn Mason, Havre de Grace, Maryland; 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and many in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Services will be held 11am, Saturday, September 1,2001 at Mt. Calvary U.A.M.E. Church, Mt. Calvary Road, Aberdeen, MD. Where family and friends may visit 2 hours prior. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary cemetery, Aberdeen, MD.

Hughes, J. Claude

J. Claude Hughes, 63, of Cambridge, passed away on Thursday afternoon, September 6, 2001. Mr. Hughes has been in failing health for some time and since June has either been at Chesapeake Woods Center or Dorchester General Hospital.

He was born in Cambridge on January 1, 1938, the son of the late Joseph Franklin and Mary Corbman Hughes. He was raised and attended public schools in Cambridge and as a young man served in the Maryland National Guard. Mr. Hughes has worked as a waterman, a well driller, and an electrician. In the 1970’s he made his home in Piney Point over in St. Mary’s County.

He is survived by one son, Robert George Hughes of Piney Point, one brother and sister in law Franklin A. and Claribel Hughes of East New Market. Also surviving are nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother Everett H. Hughes.

A graveside service was held on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock at East New Market cemetery by Rev. Shirley A. Evans. Memorials may be made to the Heart Fund, c/o Lorraine Dickerson, 10 Harris Drive, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Middleton, Thomas L.

Thomas L. “Melbo” Middleton, Jr., of Cambridge, passed away at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore on Thursday September 6, 2001. He was 44. He was born in Cambridge on November 6, 1956 and was the son of Nina June Dickerson Middleton and the late Thomas LeRoy Middleton, Sr.

He had attended schools in Cambridge and had worked as a bricklayer for a number of years with Allen Tyler & Son and later with Dale McClain. He had been a patient at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore since July 7 where he passed away on Thursday afternoon.

He is survived by his wife, Penny A. Mills of Cambridge; one daughter, Shannan L. Middleton and her fiancée Christopher Bloodsworth, both of Cambridge, one son, Thomas L. Middleton III, and his fiancée Tara M Cannon both of Cambridge; two granddaughters: Carley Middleton and Crimzen Bloodsworth; his mother, Nina J. Middleton of Fruitland; one sister, Jacqueline D. Pusey of Salisbury, two brothers, William S. Middleton of Tampa, FL and Stephen R. Middleton of Cambridge; five nieces, Michele Harding, Nicole Hastings, Jacqueline Middleton, Stephanie Middleton, Brooke Greenhawk, two nephews William Stephen Middleton, Jr. and Stephen Robin Middleton, Jr., several great nieces and nephews and two godchildren, Tiffany Jo Tieder and Kevin Bryan Cook, Jr.. He was preceded in death by his father.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Shirley A. Evans officiating.

Ryan, Helen M.

Helen Margaret Ryan, 80, died Sunday, March 31, 2002 at the Edward McCready Memorial Hospital in Crisfield, Maryland.

Born in Union City, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late John Martin Ryan, Sr. and the late Anna Wilhelm Ryan.

Ms. Ryan lived in Weehawkin, N.J until her retirement from Beneficial Finance in 1987, when she moved to Manchester Township, N.J. She had been a resident of Hartley Hall Nursing Home in Pocomoke City just prior to her death. While living in NJ, she was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Union City and the American Legion Post Auxiliary of Weehawkin.

She is survived by two brothers and their wives, John M. Ryan, Jr. and Anne Marie of Captains Cove, Greenbackville, VA and Robert and Vivian Ryan of Springhill, FL and six nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, April 6, 2002 at 10:00 AM at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church Pocomoke City. The Father Raymond Weisman will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 1777 Reisterstown Rd., Suite 150, Baltimore, MD 21208.

John F. Lee

Age 95 of Wilmington, DE died Thursday, March 28, 2002 in the Brandywine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Lee was a machinist for the Pennsylvania Railroad, retiring in 1972. He was a member of St. Ann's Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen E. Lee, who died in 1992; and his daughter, Jacqueline Siekierda, who died in 1999. He is survived by his grandchildren Katherine L. Dow of New Castle, Cynthia A. Battisto and her husband, Robert of Sherwood Park, II, Peter J. Siekierda of New Castle and Jennifer L. Sierkierda of Elsmere; 8 great grandchildren; and 1 great great granddaughter.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ann's Church, Gilpin Ave. & Union St., Wilmington on Tuesday morning, April 2 at 10 am. Interment will be in All Saints cemetery. Friends may call the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 1900 Delaware Ave, Wilmington on Monday evening from 7-9 pm.

Jolliffe, Dorothy Smith

Dorothy Smith Jolliffe, age 89, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Calvert Manor Healthcare Center in Rising Sun. MD.

Mrs. Jolliffe was born in Mendham, NJ on December 23, 1912. She was a tax clerk in Basking Ridge, NJ and active in fundraising for Salvation Army Camps in New Jersey. She was a member of West Nottingham Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Joy Elling of Somerville, NJ; 2 grandchildren, Haan James Elling of Fairfield, CA and Jacqueline Marie Bartels of Green Bay, WI; and 3 great grandchildren, Hanna, Kyle and Ashley Bartels.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Eldridge “Jolly” Jolliffe, who passed away in January of 1995.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2002 at West Nottingham Presbyterian Church where friends may call one hour prior. A graveside service will be at Hilltop cemetery in Mendham, NJ on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 10:00 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Nottingham Presbyterian Church Building Fund c/o R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, PO Box 248, Rising Sun, MD 21911.

Watson, J. Morrison

J. Morrison Watson, 82, of Chesapeake City, died February 3, 2001 at home. He was born on June 24, 1918 in Chesapeake City, the son of the late James B. & Laura L. Watson.

Mr. Watson was a lifelong resident of Chesapeake City and he was a retired plumber.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Cooling Watson, who died in 1984.

Mr. Watson is survived by 2 nieces, Sandra F. Tracy of Forest Hill, MD and Pat Woodham of Dundalk, MD.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday February 6th at 2 PM in the Bethel cemetery, Chesapeake City with the Pastor Carol Svecz officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chesapeake City Historical Society c/o R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, P. O. Box 27, Chesapeake City, MD 21915.

McCoy-Johnson, Emma Kim

Emma Kim McCoy-Johnson, age 5, of Rising Sun, MD, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at A. I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington after a two year battle with leukemia.

She is survived by her parents, Bruce Johnson and Lori McCoy, a brother, Eli Shin McCoy-Johnson, and maternal grandparents, Lowell & Thelma McCoy, all of Rising Sun, MD; and a paternal grandmother, Ceil Johnson of Newark, DE.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to an educational scholarship fund created in her honor. Riley, Bobby T.

Bobby T. Riley, 68, of Cambridge, passed away on Monday night, May 20, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital.

He was born on February 6, 1934 in Squires, W. Va., the son of the late George Henry and Opel Shrader Riley. He was raised and attended public schools in the Tazewell, VA area. In the early 1950’s he served in the U.S. Army and in 1954 moved to Cambridge. He was employed by the Rob Roy Co. here for more than 20 years and later worked at Airpax. Mr. Riley retired at the age of 62 and later worked part time at K-Mart and Wal-Mart.

He was a member of Dorchester Post 91 American Legion, Choptank Memorial Post 7460, V.F.W. and the Cambridge Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing. He had not been ill and on Monday night was stricken at his home and taken to Dorchester General Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, the former Darlene Meyer, to whom he was married on August 14, 1970, two sons, Mark T. Riley and Russell “Rusty” Riley, Sr., both of Hurlock, four grandchildren; Laura Lynn Frey, Crystal Riley, Russell Riley, Jr., and Jennifer Riley, three great-grandchildren; Brenden Riley, Jayda Riley, and Eric North, four sisters; Pansy Bowman of Saltville, VA, Dorothy Bowman of Mudfork, VA, Ethel Howington of Tazewell, VA and Lilly Bowman of Dade City, FL, one brother; Jerry Riley of Marion, VA, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother Bennie Riley.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock by Rev. Joan P. Evans, pastor of the Immanuel United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Dorchester Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday during the hour before the service. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 114 Baptist St., Salisbury, MD 21801.

Pall bearers will be Larry Gootee, David Meyer, Josh Meyer, Bob Jones, Charles Thomas, and Alan Simmons.
