Dayton, Earl F.

Earl F. Dayton, of Queenstown, passed away at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Monday June 17, 2002. He was 77. He was born in Cambridge on May 12, 1925 and was the son of the late Charley and Nervenia Parks Dayton.

Mr. Dayton had attended schools in Cambridge, having graduated from Cambridge High school in 1942. He had served in the U.S. Army Air Force from September 8, 1943 until June 10, 1946. While he was in the military he was awarded the Army Occupation Medal (Germany), European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon as well as the WW II Victory Medal. After his discharge from the service he had worked for the Phillips Packing Co. in Cambridge and later had worked as a waterman and a carpenter. Later he had worked for the Chris Craft Corp. in Salisbury. He had also worked for the MD Natural Resources Police from 1960 until 1987. When he retired he had attained the rank of Captain, and was Commander of the Upper Eastern Shore Area. He was married to the former Ruth Stack on September 25, 1947. She passed away on June 17, 1968. Mr. Dayton was a member of the Retired Natural Resources Police Assoc. and the Chester River Yacht and Country Club, where he had enjoyed playing golf. He had been in failing health for the past three years and had been taken to the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Monday where he passed away.

He is survived by a daughter, Ruth D. Jeffries and her husband Barry W. Jeffries of Greensboro, a son Michael F. Dayton and his wife Diane Dayton of Hurlock, two grandsons, Matthew B. Jeffries of Greensboro and Brian Dayton of Hurlock, one sister, Ruth Marshall of Cambridge, one brother, Robert Dayton of Satellite Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Bradford, and four brothers, Charley Dayton, Herbert Dayton, Oscar Dayton and Edwin L. Dayton.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with David L. Kreek officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kent Island United Methodist Church Community Projects Fund, Chester, MD 21619.

Pallbearers will be members of the MD Natural Resources Police.

Lewis, Carroll J.

Carroll J. Lewis of Aireys Road near Cambridge, passed away on Monday June 17, 2002 at the Pines-Genesis Elder Care in Easton. He was 77. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 30, 1925 and was the son of the late Carroll F. and Beatrice Windridge Lewis.

He had graduated from DuPont High School in 1943. During WW II he had served in the U.S. Army from August 1943 until November 1945. He had served in the 95th Infantry Division and saw combat in France and Germany. He had been awarded the Bronze Star and the Rifleman’s Combat Badge. After WW II he graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA in 1948. From 1951 until 1962 he had worked for Westinghouse Electric Supply Company. He had worked for Sears Roebuck from 1963 until 1971. Carroll had operated a burglar alarm business in Ocean City from 1971 until 1973. He returned to Sears in August of 1973 until he retired in 1988. He was married to the former Florentine Johnson on July 21, 1961. She passed away on April 25, 1999. He was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church where he had served as Lay Leader and had served on the Administrative Board and various other offices, LAMDA CHI ALPHA Fraternity in College, Cambridge Lodge No. 1272 B.P.O.E., Cambridge Yacht Club and Dorchester Post # 91 American Legion. Carroll had worked as a volunteer for the Salvation Army for many years. For a number of years he had enjoyed traveling and had spent the winters in Florida. He had been in failing health since April, and had been a patient at the Pines-Genesis Elder Care in Easton for one week when he passed away on Monday evening.

Survivors include two sons, James Wayne Lewis of Wilmington, DE and Robert J. Murphy of Cambridge; three daughters: Maricarole Lewis Jones of Cambridge, Carole M. Jones of East New Market and Ann M. Sessoms of Cambridge. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and two nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a grandson Gregory W. Jones and a sister, Shirley L. Zigmont.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Shirley A. Evans officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Memorial Contributions may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, C/O Mrs. Roxanne Snelling, 5426 Chateau Road, East New Market, MD 21631 or to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 91, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Pallbearers will be Michael Fay, James Lewis, Jonathan Jones, RJ Murphy, Doug Tompkins, Robert J. Murphy, Jay Jones and Garland Jones.

Cox, Elizabeth M.

Elizabeth M. Cox, 78, , passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center on Friday morning, March 8, 2002. She was the wife of the late Charles H. Cox

She was born in Cambridge on January 25, 1924, the daughter of the late Joyce and Helen Bennett Bramble. She was a lifelong resident here and a 1942 graduate of Cambridge High School. In the mid 1940’s she was married to Mr. Cox and as a young woman she worked at McCrory’s . For a number of years she managed the Super 50 Drive-In Theater near Trappe, and she later worked at the local English’s Restaurant and Edgehill Pharmacy. Mrs. Cox had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church and taught in the Sunday School there. Mr. Cox passed away on November 7, 1984. In 1991 she became a resident of Stewart’s Care Home and since 1992 has resided at Mallard Bay.

She is survived by two sons; Charles Michael Cox of Salisbury and Daniel L. Cox of East New Market, four grandsons; David Cox of Secretary, Wesley Cox, Joseph and Nathaniel Cox, all of Salisbury, and two great-grandchildren; Nicole and Matthew Cox.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon at 1 o’clock by Rev. Barry L. Miller and Rev. Randall T. Blackmon. Burial will take place in the Maryland Veterans cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday night from 7:30 to 9. Memorials may be made to either The Alzheimers Association, Eastern Shore Chapter, 212 W. Main St., Suite 202 C, Salisbury MD 21801 or American Cancer Society, c/o Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Rd., Cambridge MD 21613.

Pall bearers will be Jerry Willey, Sr., David Elzey, Dennis Jones, Ron Meredith, Wayne Asplen, Wayne Potter, and Kenneth Wheatley.

Duvall, Richard Lee

Mr. Richard Lee "Rocky" Duvall, 37, of Harpers Ferry, WV died on Thursday, February 21, 2002, at his residence. He was the husband of Christina Dawn Stottlemyer Duvall, his wife of 5 years..

Born on June 20, 1964, in Frederick he was the son of the late Donald Eugene Duvall, Sr. and Betty Lou Furr Duvall of Frederick. Mr. Duvall worked as a truck driver for BFI for the past 6 years. He was a member of the Frederick Eagles Club. Rocky loved to go fishing and was an avid NASCAR fan especially of the late Dale Earnhardt.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son, Brandon R. Duvall of Pennsylvania; a sister, Tracie L. Duvall of Woodsboro; a brother, Donald E. Duvall, Jr. of Frederick; 4 nieces and nephews; Ashley Fisher of Frederick, Jesse Dalton, Emma Dalton and Brady Cooper all of Keedysville; 3 uncles; William Duvall, Gary Duvall and his very special uncle, Leroy Duvall all of Frederick; brother and sister-in-laws; Clayton and Dee Dee Dalton of Keedysville and Roy and Valerie Cooper also of Keedysville. Mr. Duvall will also be remembered by his wife Christina's parents; Scotty Stottlemyer and wife Cecelia of Harpers Ferry and Patricia Stottlemyer of Jefferson; his sister Tracie's friend Todd Sharrer of Woodsboro, his best friend Kevin King of Thurmont, as well as his special friends Gene Goodsell of Frederick and Jim Starner of Hagerstown.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, February 25, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick with Rev. Wendell McClellan of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Gapland, MD officiating.

Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to establish an educational fund for his son, C/O Scotty Stottlemyer, 1025 Cherrywood Court, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425

Baer, Shirley Jane Henry

Shirley Jane Henry Baer of Seaford, DE, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. She was 68.

She was born Feb. 17, 1934 in Preston, MD, the daughter of the late Levin J. and Christina Schevel Henry.

She was a homemaker, dedicated wife and an avid reader. She was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Preston.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, George Baer, whom she married on Nov. 9, 1951, a son, Robert Baer of Salisbury, a daughter, Deborah Street of Bridgeville, DE, one granddaughter and two grandsons; three sisters, Anna H. Lord of Seaford, Martha Hopkins of Easton, and Evelyn Tucker of Preston, and one brother, William Henry of Cookeville, TN. A brother, Levin Henry, Jr. preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg. Interment will follow in Bridgeville cemetery in Bridgeville, DE. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00-2:00p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, PO Box 39, Preston, MD 21655.

Wilkinson, E. Ronnie

E. Ronnie Wilkinson, 57, of Pocomoke City, MD, died suddenly, Tuesday, January 01, 2002.

Born October 22, 1944 in Maryland, he was the son of Virginia Pridgen Wilkinson of Pocomoke City and the late Alex “Buddy” Wilkinson.

Mr. Wilkinson served forty years as a meat cutter with the last eight years at the Food Lion in Fruitland, as manager of the meat department. He was an avid NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fan.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Baker Wilkinson of Pocomoke City, four children, Rochelle DelGuzzo and her husband David of St Clairesville, Ohio, Michele Littleton and her husband B.J. of Glen Burnie, MD, Cierra Wilkinson and Ronnie Wilkinson both of Pocomoke City, three grandchildren, Erica, Emily and Trey DelGuzzo all of St Clairesville, OH, one brother, Larry Wilkinson of Pocomoke City, a sister Sherri Bailey of Wallops, VA and two nieces.

A funeral service will be held, Saturday, January 5, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Holloway Melson Funeral Home in Pocomoke City, where family and friends may call Friday from 7-9:00 pm and one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Ken Elligson will officiate. Interment will follow in Spence Baptist cemetery in Snow Hill, MD.

Bradley, Annie Julia Horseman

Annie Julia Horseman Bradley of Riverton, near Sharptown died at Genesis Eldercare Center in Salisbury on Tuesday, January 1, 2002. She was 82.

She was born August 25, 1919 at Wetipquin the daughter of the late George and Eva Harner Horseman. Her husband, Fred T. Bradley preceded her in death on March 27, 1997.

She was a member of Riverton United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, Robert Bradley of Riverton and three grandchildren, Eva F. Bradley, Samantha P. Bradley and Will J. Bradley all of Riverton and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, George "Buster" Horseman and Bill Horseman and three sisters, Dorothy Jenkins and Hilda Insley and Martha "Jane" Finocchio preceded her in death.

Funeral services for her will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2002 at Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg with the Rev. John Nalley, officiating. Interment will follow in Riverton cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from noon to 2:00 p.m..

The family would like to express special thanks to Nicole Levin, Wanda Adshead, Debbie Coates and Joanne Walston for the care that they provided.

Sturgis, Woodrow Walker

Woodrow “Woody” Walker Sturgis, 85, of Pocomoke City, MD, died peacefully at his home of natural causes, Tuesday, January 01, 2002.

Born November 11, 1916 in Virginia, he was the son of the late Otho Linwood and Blanche Mae Littleton Sturgis. His wife of 53 years, Grace Pettit Sturgis preceded him in death February 23, 1995.

Mr. Sturgis was a longtime member of the Maryland Farm Bureau and a Past Pocomoke Ruritan member. He farmed most of his life and retired from Kellam, Inc. after nineteen years of service. He will always be remembered as a devoted family man and loving father and grandfather.

He is survived by four children and their spouses, Gloria and Bill Farlow of Pocomoke City, Diane and Tom Pusey of Salisbury, Don and Sharon Sturgis and Mike and Joy Sturgis all of Pocomoke City, seven grandchildren, Dustin and Dean Pusey, Brandon, Alan, Eric, Heather and Kristen Sturgis, two sisters, Helen Elliott of Salisbury, Juanita Quillen of Rehobeth, MD, two brothers Charles Sturgis and Parker Sturgis both of Fruitland and several nieces and nephews. A grandson, Zed Pusey and several brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held, Friday, January 4, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Holloway Melson Funeral Home in Pocomoke City, where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Kerry Hinton will officiate. Interment will follow in First Baptist cemetery on Old Snow Hill Road in Pocomoke City, MD.

If desired, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Gerry Harrison, 337 Winterquarters Drive, Pocomoke City, MD 21851 or to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733.

Bradshaw, Jr., Richard

Richard Bradshaw, Jr. of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Tuesday December 11, 2001. He was 71. He was born in Cambridge on April 29, 1930 and was the son of the late Richard Bradshaw, Sr. and the late Mary Elizabeth Price Dean.

He had graduated from Cambridge High School in 1948. Mr. Bradshaw had served in the U.S. Army from October 8, 1951 until October 8, 1953. On August 1, 1958 he was married to the former Rebecca Murphy. He had worked at the Cambridge Wire Cloth Co. for 28 years, and later worked as a cook at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center for 16 years until he retired several years ago. Mr. Bradshaw was a member of the Cambridge Wesleyan Church, and was also an exempt member of Rescue Fire Co. Inc. He was a Past President of the Cambridge Little League and also a Past President of the Cambridge Youth Bowling. He had been in failing health for several years when he passed away at his home on Tuesday.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca C. Murphy of Cambridge, one son, Ricky A. Bradshaw of Cambridge, two grand children, Ricky Anthony Bradshaw, Jr., Joshua Richard Bradshaw; one sister and brother in law Lorraine B. and Harold L. Willey of Cambridge, one brother, Benjamin F. Bradshaw of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. In additions to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary E. Ruark.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Cambridge Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Barry L. Miller officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday during the hour preceding the service. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Youth Center of the Cambridge Wesleyan Church, C/O Mrs. Paulette Meekins, 1108 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Active Pallbearers will be Richard Willey, Chuck Wright, Thomas Holotik, Johnny Holotik, George L. Murphy and Doug Abbott. Honorary Bearers will be: Herbert Moore, Leonard Meyer, Paul Pritchard and O’Neil Murphy.

Mercer, Edward J.

Edward J. Mercer, of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge on Saturday November 17, 2001. He was 82. He was born in Patterson, New Jersey on March 2, 1919 and was the son of the late Frederick and Anna Mercer.

He had attended schools in New Jersey and for a number of years had worked for the ITT Company in New Jersey. He had served in the U.S. Army during WW II and had served at Normandy, Northern France and also in the Rhineland. Mr. Mercer had made his home in Cambridge for the past 15 years. Mr. Mercer had been in failing health for the past three years and been a patient at Dorchester General Hospital for one day where he passed away on Saturday afternoon.

He is survived by two nieces, Joan Van Houston of Houston, DE and Pat Rizzo of New Jersey and one nephew Charles Lazzero of New Jersey.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans cemetery near Hurlock with the Rev. George W. Wheatley officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 91, Cambridge, MD 21613.
