Martha A. Hensley, 71, of Hampstead

Martha Anne Welsh Hensley, 71, of Hampstead, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at home after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 28, 1932, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Walter J. Welsh and Helen E. Grove Welsh Reinhart. She was the wife of Russell I. Hensley, with whom she celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 13, 2001.

She was a 1949 graduate of Mount Airy High School, a 1969 graduate of Catonsville Community College Nursing Program and a 1979 graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing RN to BSN program. She also earned a master of arts degree in human sciences from Hood College in 1989. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and Sigma Phi Omega National Academic Honor and Professional Society of Gerontology.

She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Hampstead, where she once taught Sunday school. She had more recently been president of St. John's United Methodist Women.

She was an employee of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for nearly 30 years and for most of that time served as a Community Health Nurse at the Carroll County Health Department. She retired in 1992 as director of the Home Health Program. She continued to work part time at the Westminster Senior Center with developmentally disabled clients until September 2002.

She was active in community organizations and had been a member and past president of Hampstead American Legion Auxiliary Unit 200, a charter member and past president of Hampstead Homemakers Club, and past president and secretary of the Carroll County Family and Community Education Association.

Her other memberships included Carroll County Church Women United, Carroll County Chapter of AARP, the Historical Society of Carroll County, MCEA retirees chapter, A.C.S. Relay for Life and Reach to Recovery Programs, as well as serving as an election judge for the Hampstead District.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are brothers W. David Welsh of Reisterstown and Thomas D. Welsh of Upperco; seven nieces and nephews; 12 grandnieces and -nephews; and numerous relatives by marriage.

She was predeceased by a grandnephew.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead, with the Rev. Kimberly Brown-Whale officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Nellie W. Pickett, 98, of Woodbine

Nellie Walker Pickett, 98, of Woodbine, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Montgomery County General Hospital, Olney.

Born Nov. 7, 1904, in Unionville, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Calvin Walker and the late Lula Mae Beall Walker. She was the wife of the late James Edgar Pickett.

She retired as a licensed practical nurse at Springfield State Hospital after 25 years of service and later worked as a nurse at Sykesville Eldercare.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed working in her flower garden and shopping.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law James Ellsworth and Irene Pickett of Westminster; daughters and sons-in-law Nancy L. and Ernest Hand of Bella Vista, Ark., and Barbara J. and Donald Lewis of Thurmont; sisters Louise Metz of Damascus, Evelyn Haywood of Arbutus, and Helen Lueke of Catonsville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by daughter Doris Gosnell and brothers Earl Walker, Jessie Monroe Walker and Mike Walker.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Burrier-Queen Funeral Directors, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield, with the Rev. Tim Leaman, of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Lawrence E. Roberts, 70, of Union Bridge

Lawrence Earl "Larry" Roberts, 70, of Union Bridge, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at the Carroll Hospital Center.

Born May 2, 1933, in Tennessee, he was the son of the late Neal and Mary Collins Roberts. He was the husband of Linda Mary Roberts, his wife of 42 years.

He was a veteran of the Army.

He was retired as a heavy equipment operator and was the owner/operator of Roberts Excavating.

He enjoyed square dancing and helping his wife teach round dancing. He also enjoyed helping his wife with crafts and craft shows and was a baseball coach with the New Windsor Rec League.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter Mary Roberts Abbott of Owings Mills; sons and daughters-in-law Dale Allan and Karen Roberts of Taneytown, and David Eugene and Crystal Roberts of Westminster; brother Russell Roberts of Union Bridge; sisters Charlene Roberts and Jewel Kemp, both of Frederick, and Lucy Roberts of Sneedsville, Tenn.; grandchildren Tony Rodriquez, Lance Gibson, Natalie Roberts, Ashley Roberts, Amanda Roberts, Ana Rodriquez and Marissa Roberts; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by siblings Rankin Roberts, Louise Eyler, Helen Hatfield and Harold Roberts.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with the Rev. David Helfrich officiating. Interment will be in Meadow Branch cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Carroll County Unit, 1393 Progress Way, Eldersburg, MD 21784.

Anna T. Ryan, 96, of Westminster

Anna Theresa Ryan, 96, of Westminster, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 4, 2003, at the Westminster Nursing and Rehabilitative Center, after an extended illness.

Born Aug. 22, 1907, in Shamokin, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William J. and Bridget Gunn Ryan.

Before retiring, she was an English teacher at Westminster High School and also taught for a number of years in Pennsylvania.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church.

Surviving are brother Joseph Ryan; sister Helen Ryan; five nieces; six nephews; five great-nieces; three great-nephews; three great-great-nieces; two great-great-nephews; and devoted friends Marker J. and Eleanor Lovell of Westminster.

She was predeceased by brothers Ed, William and James Ryan; and sisters Mary Ryan and Marguerite Kreis.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster, with the Rev. Gerald Steffener as celebrant. Interment will be in St. John cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arc of Carroll County, 180 Kriders Church Road, Westminster, MD 21158.

Arrangements are by Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.

Kate M. Smith-Worrall, 79, of Westminster

Kate M. Smith-Worrall, 79, of Westminster, formerly of Sparks, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at the Westminster Nursing and Convalescent Center.

Born March 7, 1924 in Germany, she was the daughter of the late Max Otto and Rosa Grimm Uhlig. She was the wife of A. Roland "Van" Worrall, who died May 25, 1995.

She was a medical doctor in private practice and research. She was a 1950 graduate of Temple Medical School.

She loved traveling, gardening, horseback riding, boating, and water and snow skiing.

Surviving is son Vernon Smith Jr., M.D., of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; daughter Robin L. Smith of Finksburg; and granddaughter Elysia Smith of Highlands Ranch, Colo.

She was predeceased by sister Ilse Bruehsel, M.D.

Private interment will be in Philadelphia.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, William Black Medical Research Building, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, 650 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032-9982.

Robert R. Sokolinski, 33, of Sykesville

Robert Romulus Sokolinski, 33, of Sykesville, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at his home.

Born April 30, 1970, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Robert and Margaret Magier Leavitt. He was the husband of Katherine F. Sokolinski.

He was a deputy sheriff with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department. He was a former police officer with the town of Sykesville. He received numerous awards including recognition by the Maryland House of Delegates as the recipient of the 2002 Deputy of the Year Award for Carroll County. He was awarded the 2003 "Respect For Law" Award by the Optimist Club of Westminster.

He graduated from Shepherd College, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., where he had set many scoring records playing basketball.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Sykesville.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are son Luke Sokolinski of Sykesville; stepbrother Carl R. Crawford of Westminster; grandparents Wanda and Piotr Sokolinski of Westminster; and father and mother-in-law Louis and Betty Fischer of Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 7538 Main St., Sykesville, with his pastor, the Rev. Roland M. "Bud" Brown officiating. Interment will be in Springfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the church.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home & Monument Company, 6028 Sykesville Road, Eldersburg.

Mark R. Vincent, 86, of Parkville

Mark R. Vincent, 86, of Parkville, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Oak Crest Retirement Village, Parkville.

Born March 19, 1917, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Ross C. and Nellie C. Vincent. He was the husband of Betty P. Vincent of Parkville.

He had been an engineer with the C&P Telephone Co. for 37 years.

He was a veteran of the Army.

He was a member of Sharon Lodge 182 AF&AM and the Telephone Pioneers.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter Marlaine V. Helfenbien of Towson; son Mark A. Vincent of Berlin; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Lorraine Park cemetery, Baltimore, with the Rev. Clarence L. Roark officiating.

Earl R. Wilder Jr., 37, formerly of Sykesville

Earl Ray Wilder Jr., 37, of McKinney, Texas, formerly of Sykesville, died suddenly Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at his home, after a heart attack.

Born Feb. 28, 1966, he was the son of Ray and Linda Asbury Wilder of Eldersburg. He was the husband of Stephanie Anne Willson Wilder.

He was originally from the Gaither area of Sykesville.

He was a 1984 graduate of Liberty High School and a 1988 graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla., with a bachelor of arts degree.

Following college, he relocated to Texas and worked in the computer technology field throughout his entire career.

Surviving, in addition to his wife and parents, are grandmother Elizabeth Wilder of Catonsville; father and mother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Willson of Richardson, Texas; brother-in-law Spencer Willson of Richardson, Texas; sister-in-law Staccia Willson of Richardson,Texas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by grandfather Esty Wilder; grandparents Floyd and Virginia Asbury; aunts Ruby Lea Wilder Todd and Shirley Asbury Dampman; and uncle Raymond Asbury.

Interment was held Oct. 29 in Pecan Grove Memorial Park, McKinney, Texas.

Mildred J. Willinghan, 80, of Reisterstown

Mildred J. Willinghan, 80, of Reisterstown, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at her home.

Born March 6, 1923, in Marlinton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Rex and Lillian Thomas. She was the wife of the late Albert T. Willinghan.

She had been a keypunch operator for J. Schoenemans.

Surviving are sons Cecil Clark of Janlou, W.Va., and Howard C. Willinghan of Reisterstown; stepson Albert G. Willinghan of Severna Park; daughters Lamona R. Valtine of Baltimore and Therese S. Janezic of Reisterstown; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown, with the Rev. Stanley S. Waters officiating. Interment will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park, Elkridge.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
