Dorothy V. Wojcik, 79, of Westminster

Dorothy Virginia Wojcik, 79, of Westminster, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at the Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center.

Born March 9, 1924, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Nellie Carter Schuster. Twice married , she was the wife of the late John James Powers and William J. Wojcik.

She was retired from the Methodist Church Board of Education as a secretary and was a member of the Westminster United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughter Lynn Powers Taylor of Massachusetts; grandchildren and spouses Christiana and Donald Shea, Matthew and Kellie Turner, and Rebecca and Andrew Conti; and great-grandchildren Christopher and Benjamin Conti and Kaitlyn and Alexander Shea.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Westminster United Methodist Church, 162 E. Main St., Westminster, with the Rev. David Highfield officiating. Interment will be private.

There will be no public visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster United Methodist Church, 162 E. Main St., Westminster, MD 21157.

Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles T. Bostian, 86, of Middleburg

Charles Truman Bostian, 86, of Middleburg, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va., after an extended illness.

Born Jan. 12, 1917, in Union Bridge, he was the son of the late Horace A. and Lottie Biehl Bostian. He was the husband of Lois H. Bostian, his wife of 63 years.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He served in the Army during World War II, seeing action in the North African campaign through Sicily and Italy where he was wounded. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He was a garage mechanic for more than 50 years at Bostian's Garage, Middleburg, retiring in 1979. He had also been employed with Glenn L. Martin as an airplane engine mechanic.

He enjoyed going to sales and auctions and repairing broken articles.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Judy Eyler of Taneytown and Deborah White of Avondale, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law C. Douglas and Linda Bostian of Taneytown; grandchildren Kristy Erb, Jennie Brandt and Lottie Bostian; great-grandsons Billy Erb V and Derek Erb; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sister Mary Bostian; and brothers Raymond, Joe, Melvin, Donald, Bob and Gary Bostian.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, with the Rev. Charles Slaugh, pastor of Union Bridge United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Holly Slaugh, pastor of Middleburg United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Haugh's cemetery, Ladiesburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Middleburg United Methodist Church, 700 Johnsville Road, Middleburg, MD 21757; or to Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 1050, Union Bridge, MD 21791; or to VA Center, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

William E. George Jr., 82, of Owings Mills

William E. George Jr., 82, of Owings Mills, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown, with Chaplain Chris Mitchell from the Hospice of Baltimore officiating.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Gladys L. Haines, 91, of Westminster

Gladys Laura Haines, 91, of Westminster, died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 9, 2003, at her home.

Born Jan. 18, 1912, in Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maybelle Logue Arnold. She was the wife of David Andrew Levere Haines, who died March 25, 1995.

She was a housewife.

She was a member of Deer Park United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughter Reba Nancy Haines of California; son Joseph Lynn Haines of Hanover, Pa.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by sisters Dorothy B. Leister and Theresa E. Arnold.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 2800 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg, with her pastor, the Rev. Basil Day Jr., officiating.

Arrangements are by Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.

Joshua S. Hughes, 21, of Sykesville

Joshua Samuel "Josh" Hughes, 21, of Sykesville, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, in Sykesville.

Born April 30, 1982, in Baltimore, he was the son of Cynthia A. Hughes and Samuel H. Hughes, both of Sykesville.

He was a 2000 graduate of South Carroll High School.

He had been working at Russell Automotive, Catonsville.

He enjoyed basketball, video games and hanging out with his friends.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are sister Angela Marie Ingram of Sykesville; niece Logyn D. Ingram of Sykesville; grandmother Rose Marie Carter of Sykesville; aunts Sandra Rutter, Kimberly Ann Williams, D. Lisa Summers and Carol Lee Payne; and several aunts, cousins, loved ones and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. today at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, with the Rev. Theodore R. Miller Jr. officiating. Interment will be private.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 p.m. until time of service today at the funeral home.

Ruth E. Strevig, 94, Littlestown, Pa.

Ruth E. Strevig, 94, of Littlestown, Pa., died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at Hanover Hall Nursing Home, Hanover, Pa.

Born Oct. 15, 1909, in Littlestown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Violet May Stover Dixon. She was the wife of Paul M. Halter, who died in 1977, and Joe Strevig, who died in 1988.

She had been a member of St. Mary's United Church of Christ in Silver Run and the Littlestown Senior Citizens.

She had retired from the Westminster Manufacturing Co.

After becoming a grandmother, she opened a children's clothing store in Westminster.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Charlotte L. and Michael A. Iocona of Littlestown, Pa., and Marian E. and Henry E. Ramsey of Kissimmee, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Little's Funeral Home, 34 Maple Ave., Littlestown, Pa., with the Rev. Richard W. Scott officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Silver Run.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's United Church of Christ, 1441 E. Mayberry Road, Westminster, MD 21158.

Dulcie M. Whaley, 86, of Westminster

Dulcie May Whaley, 86, of Westminster, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at her home from a heart attack.

She was born Jan. 11, 1917, in Brisbane, Australia.

She came to America shortly after World War II and worked in the printing business at Oscar T. Smith Inc. until her retirement.

Surviving are sisters Bernice Dogget and Mavis Lofthouse; brother Keith Bridge; grandchildren Barbara Horn and Jeffrey Horn; great-grandchildren Lexus Horn and Skyler Mann; and several dear friends.

A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pauline M. Kelly, 81, of Hampstead

Pauline Mildred Kelly, 81, of Hampstead, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in Baltimore City.

Born Oct. 21, 1922, in Maspeth, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Frank B. and Pauline Mildred Schmidt Seabrook.

She was the wife of the late Thomas J. Kelly.

She had been employed in merchandising.

She had been a member of St. Bartholomews Catholic Church and was active in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are daughters and son-in law Janet P. and Kevin Cooke of Westminster, Dori A. Kelly of Baltimore and Evelyn M. Nance of Stockton, Calif.; brother Frank P. Seabrook of Mahwah, N.J.; sister Florence A. Griffis of Valley Center, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service and interment will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead.

Herbert M. Marquess, 75, of Owings Mills

Herbert Milford Marquess, 75, of Owings Mills, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at the Levindalle Center in Baltimore.

Born July 2, 1928, in Garrison, he was the son of the late Herbert Vincent Marquess and Ruth Virginia Helming. He was the stepson of the late Joseph C. Eckert. He was the husband of Theresa Catherine Kreiner Marquess.

He was a Navy veteran.

He was a retired truck driver.

He was a member of the Bucs Club and a former member of the Reisterstown Moose.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children Herbert Vincent Marquess of Owings Mills and Jo Ann Billet of Pasadena; sisters Jane Allen of Garrison, Lucille Houck of Arbutus and Virginia Gardener of Pennsylvania; stepbrother Robert Eckert of Pennsylvania; and stepsisters Lorraine Diehl of Pennsylvania and Pat Wilson of Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills.

Interment will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park, Elkridge.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Janet J. McDowell, 61, of Westminster

Janet J. McDowell, 61, of Westminster, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at her home.

Born June 16, 1942, in Gettysburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Mildred Dimerling Johnson of Gettysburg, Pa. and the late Lester Johnson.

She was the wife of Peter McDowell, her husband of 38 years.

She was a 1960 graduate of Gettysburg High School and a 1964 graduate of Gettysburg College, receiving a bachelor of arts in psychology.

She received her masters of education from Shippensburg College.

Before retiring, she had worked for the Carroll County Board of Education, teaching at Westminster Elementary for 25 years.

She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she served on the church council, sang in the choir and was on multiple church committees.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and mother, are daughters and son-in-law Jane and Keith Smith of Tampa, Fla. and Susan McDowell of Westminster; son Michael McDowell of Denver, Colo.; brothers and sisters-in-law Rolf and Genie Johnson of Martinsburg, W.Va., David and Alison Johnson of Los Altos, Calif.; and grandsons Brennan and Parker Smith of Tampa, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St., Westminster, with her pastor, the Rev. David Helfrich, officiating.

Interment will be private in Evergreen cemetery, Gettysburg, Pa.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, Ministry and Mortar Fund, 21 Carroll St., Westminster, MD 21157.
