September 18, 2000

Charles Elsworth Huddleston, Sr. of Easton died on Monday September 18, 2000 at the William Hill Manor in Easton. He was 94.

Born in Buffalo, NY, on March 23, 1906, he was the son of the late Thomas Harry and Marie Elsworth Huddleston. After graduating from The Franklin School in 1917, he attended The Nichols School in Buffalo and graduated in 1924. He entered Cornell University in 1924 and earned the Professional Degree of Mechanical Engineering in 1929. He began his career as Manager of Industrial Engineering for Alcoa from 1929 to 1944 and then as Director of Mechanical Engineering for Blaw-Knox from 1944 to 1948. He then served as Director of Research for Gorham Manufacturing Co. from 1948 to 1952 and then as Executive Vice President of Cleveland Punch and Shear Works from 1952 to 1962. He spent ten years as Principal Engineer for the Ford Foundation in foreign assignments in Pakistan, Egypt, Nigeria and Mexico until his retirement in 1972.

He was married to the former May Cosbey from 1937 until she died in 1974. He then married the former Bernice Kip Creswick from 1974 until her passing in 1988. He was a member of Talbot Country Club, Tred Avon Yacht Club, Poplar Islands Yacht Club and the T4C's.

Mr. Huddleston is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Burnett Watson whom he married in 1989; a daughter May Huddleston of Atlantic City, NJ; two sons, Thomas Huddleston of Easton and Charles Huddleston, Jr. of Denton; one stepdaughter, Edwinna Van Derzanden of Rochester, NH and four grandchildren. A son, Charles Huddleston, Jr., died in 1943. A family viewing was held at Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday, September 19, 2000. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at 11 AM at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Oxford, MD. Entombment will be at the church columbarium.

Sept. 16, 2000

Mary Elizabeth Kimbles of Price, MD died Sept. 16, 2000 at Memorial Hospital in Easton, MD at the age of 82.

Born near Centreville, MD. on April 4, 1918. She is the daughter of the late William Owen and Mary Tatman Mullikin. Mrs. Kimbles graduated from Centreville High School, class of 1938. She married Samuel James Kimbles of Church Hill, MD on May 6, 1944. During WWII she worked at the Defense Plant in Chestertown, MD. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for the Queen Anne’s county Liquor Board, Bo Jewell Contracting Company of Centreville, MD and 17 years as secretary for Queen Anne’s County High School. She retired in 1983. Her husband died in 1995.

Mrs. Kimbles was an officer of the A.A.R.P. of the Queen Anne’s county chapter, a member of the Price Community Club, Price, MD., Centreville High School Alumni, Queen Anne’s County Retired Teachers Association, Bethany United Methodist Church, Price, MD and a past member of Price Homemakers Club, Price, MD

A son survives Mrs. Kimbles: Samuel James Kimbles, Jr. , A granddaughter: Caroline Audrianna Kimbles and a grandson: Steven Robert Kimbles all of Queenstown, MD. A brother predeceases her: the late Jack Mullikin.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000 from 7 – 9pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Centreville, MD Funeral services will be Wrvices will be Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, 11:00am at the Bethany United Methodist Church in Price, MD Interment will be in Church Hill cemetery.

September 15, 2000

Allene Vereen Russ, of Virginia Beach, VA. died at Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville, MD. She was 82.
She was born in Little River, SC on August 3, 1918 and is the daughter of the late Samuel G. and Katherine Vereen. Mrs. Vereen graduated from Wampee High School in Little River, SC. and married the late William A. Russ, a contractor who built arsenals during WWII
She was a member of the Eastern Star in Hollidaysburg, PA where she lived from 1946 to 1969. She later moved to Virginia Beach, Va. where she has resided for the last 30 years.

Two sons survive her: William A. Russ of Redondo Beach, CA and James A. Russ and his wife Rita of Stevensville, MD. Four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Four brothers also predecease her: Rudolph Vereen, Samuel Mettlar Vereen, William Ulrick Vereen and Jeremiah Jennings Vereen.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, 11:00am at the Little River United Methodist Church, U.S. 17, Little River, SC. Inurnment is private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society P.O. Box 132 Queenstown, MD 21658.

September 14, 2000

James Franklin Robinson of Easton died at his home on Thursday, September 14, 2000. He was 94.

Born in Easton on June 25, 1906, he was the son of the late William Wilson and Emily Smith Robinson. After living in the Philadelphia area for 12 years, he returned to Easton in 1938 where he worked for T. Earle Ewing Hardware Store as a shop foreman for 45 years until his retirement in the early 1980's.

Mr. Robinson was a charter member of the St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Easton. He was also a member of several lodges: Miller Lodge #18 I.O.O.F.; Encampment #33; Miller Rebekah Lodge #65; Coats Lodge #102 AF & AM; the Royal Arch Masons; Eastern Shore Shrine Club of Boumi Temple, Baltimore; and 32nd degree of Scottish Rite Bodies of the Orient of Maryland. Mr. Robinson's first wife, the former Louise C. Harrington, whom he married in 1927, died in 1980.

He is survived by his second wife, the former Nettie Marie Clark, whom he married in December 1982; a daughter, Faye Robinson Hambridge and her husband, Frank L. Hambridge of Dubois, Wyoming; a sister-in-law, Bessie Robinson of , several nieces and nephews, six stepchildren and seven grand stepchildren. Two brothers, Albert E. Robinson and W. Paul Robinson are deceased.

Funeral services will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Easton on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial, with Masonic graveside services conducted by Coats Lodge #102, will be at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 100 Peachblossom Rd., Easton, MD 21601, Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Dr., Easton, MD 21601 or to a favorite charity.

September 11, 2000

Donald Wanamaker Smith, of Cokesbury Village and Centreville, MD passed away on Monday, September 11, 2000. He was 77.

He was born and lived in Bethlehem, PA and graduated from the U.S. Naval academy in 1945. He served in World War II on the USS Biloxi in the Pacific and on the Battleship North Carolina. He also taught at Annapolis during the Korean War. He joined the DuPont Company in 1948 and retired after 38 years. He was an enthusiastic member of the St. Albans Church choir and had served as treasurer of the Episcopal Diocesan Council of Delaware.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, the former Mary Morse whom he married in 1946; a daughter, Dana S. Tench of Cleveland, OH; a son, Daniel S. M. Smith of Denver, CO and a grandson, Matthew J.M. Smith of Denver, CO.

A Memorial service will be held in the auditorium at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin, Delaware on Saturday, September 16, 2000 at 2:00 PM.

Sara Catherine Roe Valliant of Centreville, MD, a lifelong resident of Queen Anne’s County died September 11, 2000 at the Peninsula Medical Center in Salisbury, MD. She was 84.

She was born near Centreville, MD. the daughter of the late Mary Ava Delahay and William Emory Roe, Jr. She was a graduate of the Centreville High School, class of 1933 and attended Washington College where she was a member of the Sigma Tau Delta Sorority. Later she was employed by the Bay and River Real Estate Company in Centreville, MD as a secretary. On May 18, 1940 she was married am=5495">married at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Centreville, MD. to Edwin Stephens Valliant, Jr. of Centreville who died in 1998.

Mrs. Vallaint was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and served on the Alter Guild from 1951 to 1991 where she arranged alter flowers. She was honorary member of the Queen Anne’s County Garden Club which she joined in 1941. She conducted many workshops on flower arranging and was also an ardent gardener.

Mrs. Valliant is survived by a son: Edwin S. Valliant, III and a daughter: Sara Catherine Valliant Hill both of Easton, MD. Two grandchildren: Jennifer Kate Hill of Annapolis, MD and Bradley Valliant Hill of Easton, MD. One Great-Granddaughter: Grace Catherine Hill. A brother William Emory Roe, III, predeceases her.

Services will be held friday, Sept. 15, 2000, 2PM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Centreville, MD. Burial will follow immediately in St. Luke’s cemetery, Main St. Church Hill, MD. A reception will follow in St. Luke’s Parish Fellowship hall. Contributions may be made to: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Centreville, MD.

September 10, 2000

Curtis Ray Lickliter of Grasonville died on September 10, 2000 aical Center in Baltimore. He was 65.

Born in Barbourville, KY on December 29, 1934, he was the son of the late William Ray and Annie Helton Lickliter. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1957-January 1959. On January 11, 1959, he married the former Phyllis Mosgrove and they made their home in Quincy, Massachusetts where he worked for the Kneelend Shellfish Company. In 1967, he moved to Grasonville where he went to work for Giant Foods as a truck driver. He retired in 1997.

Mr. Lickliter was a member of the Easton, Church of the Nazarene, he was also a member of Local #639 Teamsters.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William Ray Lickliter of Grasonville; two brothers, Michael Lickliter of Ohio and Blan Lickliter of Tennessee; two sisters, Betty Hale of Georgia and Elizabeth Saunders of Kentucky; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Easton Church of the Nazarene on Friday, September 15, 2000 at 11:00am. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 PM. Burial will be in the Maryland Veterans cemetery Eastern Shore in Hurlock. A Mass for the Dead will be celebrated for Dorothy Teresa Rauch, of Trappe on Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at 10:00 AM at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Easton. Mrs. Rauch died on Sunday, September 10, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 71.

Born May 24, 1929 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late John and Anastasia Devaney Cronin. She attended school in New York City and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1947, she then attended St. Johns University, Brooklyn Campus graduating in 1951. In 1955 she married Dale J. Rauch and they made their home in Long Island, New York. She worked as an accountant for a number of years for several firms including High Bar Food Service Corp from which she retired in 1987. She was also comptroller of the Catholic Charities of New York City for a number of years.

In 1997 they moved to Trappe, MD. She was a member of the St. Ignatius Catholic Church of Long Beach, NY and for 45 years she was also a member of the Blessed Sacrement Parish of Jackson Heights, Queens, New York.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Rauch is survived by two daughters, Alana C. Seebode of Odenton, MD and Laura Rauch Brownlee of South Belmar, NJ; three sisters, Anne Wald of Riverhead, NY, Helen Cronin of Long Beach, NY and Joan McGrade of Long Branch, NJ, also survi, NJ, also survived by five grandchildren. Burial will be private.

September 9, 2000

Frederick John Schnell, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was 76.

He was born May 27, 1924 in Curtis Bay, Maryland, and raised in Baltimore City by Albert and Helen Murphy Brazil. Mr. Schnell joined the U.S. Navy in 1941, and served until 1967. He retired after serving in WWII and the Korean Conflict as a Chief Petty Officer. Mr. Schnell worked in home improvements and in various fast food restaurants after his retirement from the Navy.

He was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, Chester, Maryland, the Kent Island American Legion Post 278, Stevensville, the Grasonville V.F.W., Grasonville and a past member of the Kent Island Yacht Club, Chester, Maryland.

Mr. Schnell is survived by two stepsons, Thomas William Bullen of Hanover, Maryland and Paul Chaplin Bullen of Hartley, Delaware, five sisters, Mary Helen Nelson, Nancy Adams, Patricia Blackstock, Barbara Ellis, and Lorraine Smith, all of Baltimore, one brother, Edgar Brazil, of Ocean City, four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2000at 11:00 a.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chester. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Maryland Veteran’s cemetery, Hurlock.

September 6, 2000

Dr. John Edwin Tobie, a former Assistant Scientific Director for Laboratory and Clinical Research at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases with the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, died on September 6, 2000 at Heron Point in Chestertown, Maryland. He was 88.

Dr. Tobie's scientific interests focused on microbiology and parasitology. He is best known for having developed the fluorescent antibody technique for detecting malarial antibodies. Born December 26, 1911in Collison, Illinois, the son of the late Reverend Edwin L. and Carrie Jane Mansfield Tobie. Dr. Tobie was a 1929 graduate from High School, a 1935 graduate with a B.A. from the University of Illinois, in 1936 he received his M.S. from Louisiana State University in Parasitology, and in 1940 he received his Ph.D. from Tulane University in Parasitology. His Thesis in 1940 was on the Experimental studies on the pathogenicity of human "carrier" strains of Endamoeba histolytica in the dog. Dr. Tobie's employment began in 1940 as Research Fellow in Tropical Medicine at Tulane University, where from 1941-1943 he served as Instructor in Tropical Medicine. In 1943 he moved to Bethesda, Md. and worked with the National Institute of Health as Assistant Protozoologist in the Division of Zoology. In 1943 to 1946 he worked as Chief of the Dept. of Parasitology in the 19th and 406 Medical General Laboratory, with the U.S. Army during WWII. He was honorably discharged as Major in 1946. Returning to the N.I.H. in 1946 he worked as a Parasitologist with the Laboratory of Tropical Diseases until 1957 when he transferred to the Laboratory of Immunology as a Biologist, he served in this capacity until 1959. From 1959 until 1960 he served as Assistant to the Chief and Acting Head of the Applied Immunology Section with the Laboratory of Immunology N.I.H. and from 1960-1963 he was Acting Chief and Head of the Applied Immunology Section. In 1963 he served as Chief of the Laboratory of Germfree Animal Research in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases with the N.I.H. until 1969 when he served as Chief of the Laboratory of Microbial Immunity and Assistant Scientific Director of Laboratory and Clinical Research for the N.I.A.I.D., N.I.H. in Bethesda, Maryland. A position from which he retired.

Dr. Tobie was a member of several societies including: American Association of Immunologists, The New York Academy of Sciences, Tropical Medicine Association of D.C., the Association of Gnotobiotics, and the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, of which he was an emeritus member at the time of his death. His honors and special scientific recognition include Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Teaching Fellow in Parasitology at LSU from 1934 until 1937, Superior Service Award with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in April of 1963, and a Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Tobie's research interests consisted of the basic studies on antibody production and immunoglobulin synthesis in hosts infected with living microbial agents or after introduction of antigenic fractions. The cellular localization of microorganisms and their antibodies by means of fluorescent antibody methods. Dr Tobie enjoyed woodcarving, gardening, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Eleanor Johnson, who was a research parasitologist at the N.I.H. They made their home in Bethesda, Md. until 1991 when they moved to Chestertown. Dr. Tobie was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chestertown.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday September 16, 2000 at 3:00 P.M. at Wesley Hall at Heron Point. Inurnment services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Heron Point 501 East Campus Ave. Chestertown, Md. 21620. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Chestertown, Md.
