Joseph E. Kreft Sr., 76, of Finksburg

Joseph Edward Kreft Sr., 76, of Finksburg, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at St. Martin's Home in Catonsville, after complications from heart surgery.

Born July 14, 1927, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late John A. Kreft Sr. and Lucy B. Kreft. He was the husband of Elizabeth A. Hartlaub Kreft, his wife of 50 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran. He lived in Finksburg for many years.

He retired from the General Electric Co. after 34 years as a sales representative. He also owned an engraving business for 45 years.

He enjoyed family gatherings and working in his woodshop.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Joseph E. Kreft Jr. of Westminster, Stephen J. Kreft of Hampstead and Timothy M. Kreft and Christopher T. Kreft, both of Finksburg; daughters Karen M. Johnson of Ocean City, Judith A. Teta of Westminster and M. Ellen Carter of Gettysburg, Pa.; grandchildren Cody Kreft, Jaclyn and Tyler Kreft, Michael and Marcy Kreft, Patrick and Andrew Johnson, Allison, Christopher, Joseph and Grace Teta, and Lucy, John, Henry and Mary Carter; a brother, John A. Kreft Jr. of Randallstown; and a sister, Sister Laetitia, Little Sisters of the Poor, Louisville, Ky.

A brother, Robert A. Kreft Sr, predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glyndon, with Monsignor Lloyd Aiken officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Martin's Home, Little Sisters of the Poor, 601 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD 21228.

Margaret S.P. Reese, 93, of Union Bridge

Margaret Smith Pittinger Reese, 93, of 5 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, died Thursday, December 25, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born February 12, 1910, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Elmer W. Pittinger and Grace Smith Pittinger. She was the wife of the late Paul M. Reese who died in 1990.

She attended Hopewell School and was a 1927 graduate of New Windsor High School. She was a member of the Union Bridge United Methodist Church and the Union Bridge Lions Club.

She enjoyed playing bridge, trips to Atlantic City and spending time with her family.

Surviving are a daughter, Gretchen Kraft, Union Bridge; a grandson, Edwin R. Kraft and wife Rose, Frederick; 2 great-grandchildren, Melissa R. and Paul C. Kraft, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Gretchen Spoerlein, in 1983, and a son-in-law, Edwin E. Kraft, in 1998.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hartzler Funeral Home. 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, with the Rev. Dan Ceary, pastor of Linwood Brethren Church, and the Rev. Charles Slough, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Pipe Creek cemetery, near Linwood.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the Union Bridge Lions Club, c/o Rob Doan, 3329 Good Intent Road, Union Bridge, MD 21791 or to the Union Bridge United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 460, Union Bridge, MD 21791.

Diane Sapp, 48, formerly of Hampstead

Diane Sapp, 48, of Crownsville, formerly of Hampstead, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, after a battle with breast cancer.

She was the daughter of Elmer and Catherine Anderson of Hampstead. She was the wife of Donald Sapp of Crownsville.

She was a member of Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren, Westminster.

She had been employed at the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn.

Surviving, in addition to her parents and husband, are a son, Jonathan Sapp of Crownsville; brothers Elmer Anderson Jr. of Hampstead and Waino Anderson and Norman Anderson, both of Manchester; and a sister, Shirley Hampt of Westminster.

She was predeceased by a sister, Martha Dickinson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mercy Hospital Outpatient Chemo Clinic, 301 St. Paul St., Suite 409, Tower Building, Baltimore, MD 21202.

Marie G. Selvage, 86, of New Oxford, Pa.

Marie Garnet Selvage, 86, of New Oxford, Pa., died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at the Brethren Home in New Oxford, Pa.

Born Oct. 18, 1917, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Walter Crouse and Marie Kirby Crouse. She was the wife of the late Robert C. Marslett Sr. and William Selvage.

She was a retired stock person for Hutzler's Department Store.

Surviving are children Robert C. Marslett Jr. of Harveson, Del., Edward D. Marslett of Tampa, Fla., and Patricia Wallman of Manchester; a sister, Ann Grueninger of Glenarm; ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Marie G. Marslett, and one grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, with the Rev. Linda Gerber officiating. Interment will be in Gardens of Faith cemetery, Baltimore.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to The Brethren Home, P.O. Box 128, New Oxford, PA 17350.

Mary Straley, 78, of Reisterstown

Mary Straley, 78, of Reisterstown, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at her residence.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, Glyndon.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown, where a wake service will be held at 4 p.m.

Betty R. Thomas, 89, of Richmond, Va.

Betty Rex Thomas, 89, of Richmond, Va., died Dec. 24, 2003.

She taught art in the Richmond public schools.

She served as president of the Tuckahoe Artist Association, as a member of the Riverside Garden Club, St. Giles' Presbyterian Women of the Church, the Presbyterian Women of Tuckahoe Church and the Hamlet Woman's Club.

She taught Sunday school previously at Ginter Park Methodist Church and later at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church.

She graduated from the College of William & Mary and the Art Student's League in New York City. As a studio artist, she exhibited in many Richmond-area art shows including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Virginia Watercolor Society and the Richmond Watercolorist Show.

She is survived by her son, the Rev. Arthur Dicken Thomas Jr., of Taneytown, a daughter, Bettie Jefferson Thomas Guion of Richmond, and grandchildren David and Sharon Guion.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, 7000 Park Ave., Richmond, Va.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Strawbridge Shrine Association c/o A. D. Thomas, 25 Middle St., Taneytown, MD, 21787, for furnishing the John Evans House, where the first Methodist class meeting in America took place.

Karen L. Black, 31, of Woodbine

Karen Lee Black, 31, of Woodbine, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004.

Born March 16, 1972, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Emory Norval Stull Jr. of Woodbine and Barbara Ann Wareheim Foehrkolb of Westminster.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are sons Justin and Brandon Black of Westminster; brother Alan M. Stull of Sykesville; sisters Farrah M. Ader of Sykesville, and Melissa L. Foehrkolb and Margaret A. Foehrkolb, both of Westminster; grandmother Margaret L. Bowman of Howard County; and grandfather Emory N. Stull Sr. of Fulton.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, with the Rev. Roland "Bud" Brown officiating. Interment will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Marriottsville.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Victor A. Fazekas, M.D., 77, of Sykesville

Victor A. Fazekas, M.D., 77, of Sykesville, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Carroll Hospital Center.

Born March 4, 1926, in Bekes, Hungary, he was the son of the late Gyozo and Zsofia Fazekas. He was the husband of Alice B. Fazekas, who died in 2003.

He was a graduate of George Washington University and retired as a pathologist from Mercy Hospital.

He had resided at Copper Ridge for the past few years.

Surviving are brother Carl Fazekas of Las Vegas, N.V.; sister Violet Fazekas of Baltimore; and niece Lillian Ahmed of Arlington, Va.

He was predeceased by sister Ilonaf Baranyai.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairhaven Chapel, 7200 Third Ave., Sykesville. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Copper Ridge Institute, 576 Johnsville Road, Sykesville, MD 21784.

Harry C. Felter, 93, of Marriottsville

Harry Cory Felter, 93, of Marriottsville, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster.

Born Feb. 19, 1910, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John Harvey and Illona Young Felter. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Felter.

He had been a salesman with Nabisco for many years.

Surviving are grandchildren Kurt Cassell of Marriottsville and Terri Hoerl of Sykesville; great-grandchildren Jeffrey and Christine Hoerl of Sykesville and Cody, Tyler, Johanna and Garrett Cassell; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by daughter Joanne Cassell; and brothers George, William and Cletus Felter; and sister Hazel Lappe.

A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, with the Rev. Thomas Carter officiating. Interment will be private.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

James W. Lankford Jr., 88, formerly of Westminster

James W. Lankford Jr., 88, of Emmitsburg, formerly of Westminster, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at his home.

Born Nov. 30, 1915, in Petersburg, Va., he was the son of the late James W. Lankford Sr. and Laura E. Harris Lankford. He was the husband of Marguerite (Rita) M. Rosensteel Lankford, who died June 7, 1993.

He was a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and for most of his life worked in construction, supervising various construction projects.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmitsburg and a former member of St. John Catholic Church in Westminster.

He enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay.

Surviving are daughter Linda Ann Wright of Westminster; daughters and sons-in-law Kathleen and Wayne Warthen of Emmitsburg, and Marguerite and Charles Swope of Mount Airy; sister Helen Krichten of Baltimore; 15 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by brother Frederick Lankford.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Catholic Church, Westminster, with the Rev. Steve Trzecieski as celebrant. Interment will be in St. John's cemetery, Westminster.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, where a Christian wake service will be held at 8 p.m.
