November 25, 2000

Sherman Eldred Edgell, of Easton, died at his home on Saturday morning, November 25, 2000. He was 92.

Born in Baltimore, October 30, 1908, he was the son of the late Clarence Ray and Lulu Latshaw Edgell. As a child, he moved to Easton and was raised by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis K. Edgell. After graduating from Easton High School, he attended City College in Baltimore where he was manager of the golf team.

In 1928, he returned to Easton to the family grocery business where he was in partnership with his brother, Wilmer Edgell. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Coast Guard from 1941 until 1945. Following his release from active duty, he returned to the grocery business which was sold in the early 1950's. After a brief stay in Florida, he opened his own mobile home business, Easton Mobile Home Sales. After selling that business in 1972, he remained active in the mobile home industry until retiring in 1981. A member, past usher and past trustee of the First Baptist Church in Easton, he was also a member of Talbot Post #70, American Legion, the AARP and the Delta Ki Sima Fraternity at City College.

Mr. Edgell is survived by his wife, the former Bette Stevens whom he married in October of 1962; a son, Lewis Ray Edgell of Midlothian, VA and a brother, Wilmer Edgell, of Easton.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 28th, at 2 P.M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton. Burial will be at Oxford cemetery, Oxford, MD. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening, Nov. 26th, from 7 - 9 P.M.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, Idlewild Ave., Easton, MD 21601

James Earl Teat Sr. died Saturday November 25, 2000 at Kent General Hospital in Dover, Delaware after a long illness. He was 91.

James Earl Teat Sr. was born in Templeville, Md. the son of the late James Franklin and Etta Thompson Teat. After retiring from farming he worked at Campbell's Soup and Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown, Md. His life was dedicated to his farm and his family. He enjoyed going to the Crumpton Auction and talking with his friends. For several years he found pleasure in hitching the cart to one of his many ponies and going for a ride. In his last years at home, you could find him riding his moped or his tractor around the farm.

James Earl Teat Sr. is survived by one son, James Earle Teat Jr. and his wife Nancy of Millington, Md. two daughters, Anna Mae Starkey and her husband Jim of Dover, De. And Julia Etta Teat of Dover, De.; one sister, Evelyn Faulkner of Millington, Md. In addition he is survived by eight grandchildren, Ruby Schaffer and her husband Bill of Dover, De., Wayne Starkey of Milford, De., Gary Starkey and wife Dottie of Dover, De., Gene Teat and his wife Jennifer of Chestertown, Md., Karen Miller of Delaware, Joyce Pritchett and husband Jimmy of Church Hill, Md., Dean Teat and his wife Bonnie of Delaware, Dale Teat and his wife Stacy of Fredrica, De. He is also survived by 11 great grand children and 2 nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Rhoda Pauline Teat in 1984; a baby son Edward Franklin Teat and a grandson, Earle Autry (Bud) Teat.

Services will be held Thursday November 30, 2000 at 11 am at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. Friends may call 1 hour prior. Interment will be held at the Crumpton cemetery in Crumpton, Md. following the service at the funeral home.

November 24, 2000

Anna Johnson of Denton, Maryland formerly of Kent County Maryland died on November 24, 2000 at Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Denton. She was 75.

She was born in Kent County, Maryland on November 27, 1924, the daughter of the late Robert and Bertha Johnson. Graveside services will be held on Thursday November 30, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Mt. Zion Church cemetery in Still Pond, Maryland.

Kenneth H. Perry of Stevensville died on Friday, November 24, 2000 at his home. He was 54.

Born in Easton, Maryland on March 14, 1946, he was the son of Sara Mitchell Perry of Centreville, MD and the late Hugh M. Perry. He graduated from Centreville High School Class of 1964. He then received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland. In May of 1975 he married the former Charlotte Schultz. She predeceased him on March 19, 1991. Mr. Perry worked for the Anne Arundel Health Department as a Sanitarian. He was a member of Centreville United Methodist Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, John Mitchell Perry and a niece, Tiffany Lynn Perry, both of Queenstown, MD.

Services will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at 2:00 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Centreville. Burial will be at Chesterfield cemetery, Centreville. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

November 23, 2000

Ruth Stewart Orrell, of Wye Mills, died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Thursday, November 23, 2000. She was 98.

Born in Oxford, April 6, 1902, she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Cora Delahay Stewart. After graduating from Oxford High School, she attended Towson State Normal School, which is now Towson State University. After graduation, she began teaching in Wye Mills in 1923. In the late 1930's, she transferred to Longwoods where she remained until its close in 1963 and was the last teacher to teach in the Little Red School House in Longwoods. She completed her teaching career in a school at Cordova.

Following her retirement in 1965, she began full-time involvement in the family Maryland beaten biscuit business in which she had been engaged since 1934. Until her final illness, she remained active in the business, which is still run by the family today. A member of Wye Mills United Methodist Church where she had served as a Sunday School Superintendent and a member of the Board of Trustees, she was also a member of the Talbot County Public Schools Retired Teachers Association and the Queen Anne Rebecca Lodge # 94. Cited twice in the Congressional Record for her contributions to the State of Maryland, she was one of the principals responsible for the restoration of the Little Red Schoolhouse in Longwoods. Her husband, Herman M. Orrell, Jr. whom she married on June 17, 1925, died March 12, 1990.

Mrs. Orrell is survived by a son, Herman M. "Dick" Orrell, III of Wye Mills, three grandchildren, Bonnie O. Reichert of Hudson, N.H., Phillip S. Orrell of Easton and Betsy A. Skinner of Chestertown and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 27th, at 11 A. M. at the Wye Mills United Methodist Church, Wye Mills. Burial will be at Old Wye Church cemetery, Wye Mills. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, on Sunday, Nov. 26th, from 2 - 5 P.M.

Mrs. Mary "Ethel" Parsons Stokes, 90 years of Age, of Chestertown, Maryland died on Thursday, November 23rd at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown, Maryland.

Born in Chestertown, Maryland she was the daughter of the late, William Louis & Mary Elizabeth (Miller) Parsons. A life long resident of Kent County, she was brought up on the family farm. She married , the late Wilber Franklin Stokes. During her working career she worked as a food inspector for Campbell's Soup in Chestertown, Maryland. She enjoyed reading in her earlier years enjoyed baby-sitting for friends and family. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Wilber who died in 1980.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, November 26th at 2 PM from the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Maryland. A viewing will be held from 1 PM to 2 PM. Interment will be in Chester cemetery in Chestertown, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Worton United Methodist Church, Worton, MD, or to the Kent and Queen Anne's Rescue Squad, Inc. PO Box 126, Chestertown, Maryland 21620

November 22, 2000

Ethel Lee Groves of Rock Hall, Md. died Wednesday November 22nd. In her home of cancer. She was 84.

Mrs. Groves was born in Rock Hall, Md. the daughter of the late Lawrence O.and Blanche Carter Davis. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Groves enjoyed visiting friends and providing care for friends and neighbors who were unable to get out of the house. Mrs. Groves loved family get togethers and baking and cooking. Mrs. Groves enjoyed working in her yard and working with her flowers. Mrs. Groves loved animals, especially Max the family cat. Mrs. Groves was a member of Wesley Chapel Methodist church, Rock Hall, Md. and was a former member of the Rock Hall Homemakers Club.

Mrs. Groves was preceded in death by her 1st. husband Alfred LeCompte who died in 1946 and her husband of 47yrs. John A. Groves who died in 1996. Mrs. Groves is survived by 3- daughters, Barbara Standridge and her husband Melvin of Rock Hall, Md., Sandra Rust and her husband Robert of Chestertown, Md. and Tammy Stipek and her husband Donald of Perry Hall, Md., 1- Son John A. Groves of Rock Hall, Md. 7- Grandchildren and 3- Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday November 27th. 2000 at 2 pm. From the Wesley Chapel Methodist church, Rock Hall, Md. where friends and family may call 1 hr. prior to services. Friends and family are also invited to the church Sunday evening from 7-9pm for a time of visitation. Interment will be in the Wesley cemetery, Rock Hall, Md.

In Lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Kent Hospice Foundation 103 Dixon Dr. Chestertown, Md. 21620 or the Wesley Chapel Church, P.O. Box 626, Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

Clyde W. Powell, Sr. of Easton, MD died Wednesday, November 22, 2000 at his residence. He was 79.

Born March 20, 1921 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late John W. and Ella Sue Mills Powell. He resided in Baltimore, MD where he was a superintendent for the Allied Construction Company until his retirement in 1983. In 1985 he moved to St. Michaels, MD where he resided until 1996 when he moved to Easton. His wife, the former Betty Whitby whom he married in 1950 died June 2, 1993.

Mr. Powell is survived by three sons, Clyde W. Powell, Jr. of Key West, Fl, Andrew D. Powell, Georgetown, TX and Mark E. Powell, Easton, MD; four daughters, Betty Jean Shackleford of VA, Judith D. Chandler, Abington, MD, Tina M. Bayer, Finksburg, MD and Sarah E. Powell, St. Michaels, MD; two brothers, Okie Powell, Easton, MD and Harold Powell, Florida; three sisters, Eva Coleman, VA, Sweet Moore, VA and Vera Bigger, SC; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 25, 2000 at 2 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, Md. Friends may call Friday, November 24, 2000 from 7 to 9 PM and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton, MD.

November 21, 2000

Gladys Rebecca Aldridge Dudley formally of Chestertown, MD died on November 21, 2000 at her home in Louisville, Kentucky after struggling for more than twenty years to overcome the effects of several strokes. She was 85 years old.

Born November 14, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Grace Marian Walbert Aldridge and John Kennard Aldridge. Mrs. Dudley, usually known simply as Becky, graduated from Chestertown High School in 1932 and from Washington College with honors in 1936. She married Samuel Charles Dudley at Worton Manor on November 23, 1940.

She then became the consummate corporate wife, following him to various assignments and maintaining a comfortable and attractive home for him to return to at the end of the day. In many respects she (and other of her generation) may have lived through the end of a now-by-gone era where such traditional concepts of the marriage contract prevailed. Even so, there can be no doubt that she performed such a role in an exemplary fashion. She is survived by her two daughters, Suzanne Dudley Hoffa of State College, PA and Marian Dudley Friske of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and by three grandchildren, all of Virginia Beach, Parker Calvert, Clayton Kennard and Elizabeth Aldridge-Dudley Friske.

Burial services will be held for her and for her husband of sixty years (who survived her by only eight days) at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 8th at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and cemetery in Chestertown, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the names of Gladys Rebecca and Samuel Charles Dudley to Washington College, 300 Washington Avenue, Chestertown, Maryland 21620.

Rev. James Marion Griffin, Sr. of Easton, MD died Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at Genesis Eldercare-The Pines, Easton, MD. He was 85.

Born November 22, 1914 at Hollands Island, Dorchester County, he was the son of the late William and Sadie Duncan Griffin. After attending public school in Oxford, MD, he worked as a waterman until 1944 when he entered the ministry of the Wesleyan Church. His pastorates began in Tilghman, MD then Salisbury, MD, Gumboro, DE, Hopewell, VA, Baltimore, MD, Delmar, MD with his last being served in Mardela Springs, MD.

During his ministries and retirement he served on various boards and committees of the Wesleyan District. He was a member of First Wesleyan Church of Easton and Chesapeake Wesleyan District. Following his retirement in 1980, Reverend Griffin, or "Pop-Pop" as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, moved to Easton.

Rev. Griffin is survived by his wife the former Bessie Mae Sullivan whom he married June 18, 1937; four sons, Rev. J. Marion Griffin, Jr., Delmar, DE, Earl B. Griffin, Milford, DE, Rev. David P. Griffin, Easton, MD, and Rev. Paul W. Griffin, Asheboro, NC; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Dr. William G. Griffin who died September 15, 1995 and a brother, Edward Griffin.

Funeral services will be held at the First Wesleyan Church, Easton, MD on Saturday, November 25, 2000 at 11 AM. Burial will be at Oxford cemetery, Oxford, MD. Friends may call at the church on Friday, November 24 from 6 to 8 PM and one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to First Wesleyan Church, 620 Goldsborough St., Easton, MD 21601.

Vera F. Stover of Stevensville died Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at her home. She was 75.

Born March 17, 1925 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Melchoir K. and Mary Miller Weidman. She graduated from Western High School class of 1943. On October 15, 1946, she married Robert D. Stover Sr. of Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Stover worked for American Oil Company in Baltimore as a secretary. She then raised her family in Catonsville, Md. and in 1971 moved to Stevensville. She later worked for Friends Medical and Scientific Research with Dr. David Neirko as a stenographer.

Mrs. Stover then worked for the Kent Island United Methodist Church as a secretary before retiring in 1987. She was very active in the Women’s Circle for Kent Island United Methodist Church and acted as treasurer. She was currently a member of Eastern Shore Christian Fellowship Church, previously known as New Covenant Church, of Queenstown, Md. She received her Bachelor of Ministry from Chesapeake Bible College on June 28, 1992.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Stover is survived by two sons, Robert D. Stover Jr., and his wife Martha, of Parsonsburg, Md. and Mark D. Stover, and his wife Denise of Easton, Md., one daughter, Lisa Rosendale and her husband Christopher Jr. of Centreville, Md., three sisters, Ann McAvoy of Baltimore, Md., Doris Smith and Celeste Graf, both of N. Ft. Meyer, Fl. and five grandchildren, Cari, Christopher III and Rebecca Rosendale of Centreville, Maryland, and Summer and Daniel Stover of Parsonsburg. She is predeceased by a son, Carl M. Stover, a daughter, Patricia Stover, a brother, Melchoir Weidman, and a sister, Thelma Trogler.

Services will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2000 at 12:00 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Chester. Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday, November 24, 2000 from 3-5 and 7-9.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Avenue Queenstown, Md. 21658 or Chesapeake Bible College 14671 Fox Chase Circle Ridgely, Md. 21660.
