Richard Keeney, 81, of Finksburg

Richard Keeney, 81, of Finksburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Mariner Health of Glen Burnie, Glen Burnie.

Born Sept. 8, 1923, in Finksburg, he was the son of the late Alvin and Blanche Mann Keeney. He was the husband of the late Loretta Gobrecht Keeney.

He was a whiskey barrel maker at Coopers. He was an Army veteran.

Surviving are daughter Sharon D. Keeney Burton of Glen Burnie; sisters Helen Ward of Finksburg, Bernice Frye of Pikesville, Louise Wittmyer of Baltimore, Hazel Gies of Reisterstown, Ruth Lippert of Landsdowne and Eurith Bower of Westminster; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown, with the Rev. Clarence L. Roark officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Evelyn M. Miller, 94, of Harrisonburg, Va.

Evelyn Marquerite Miller, 94, of Harrisonburg, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Oak Lea Nursing Home, Harrisonburg.

Born Sept. 19, 1910, in New Windsor, she was the daughter of the late Preston Baile and Nettie Brown Roop. On June 27, 1937, she married Elvert Franklin Miller, who died on April 2, 1999.

She was a member of Sanctuary United Church of Christ, Harrisonburg.

She was a 1930 graduate with a bachelor of arts from Bridgewater College and a 1931 graduate with a master of arts degree from Western Reserve Graduate School. She was a librarian in Washington, D.C., Bethany Divinity School and two schools in Connecticut before retiring in 1975 as the librarian at Quaboaq Regional Junior and Senior High School in Massachusetts.

Surviving are daughter Frances Sue Miller of Harrisonburg; sisters Julia Ann Cairns of New Windsor, Esther Hough of Frederick, Irene Roop of Emmitsburg and Doris Wege of Chevy Chase; brothers Charles Roop of Westminster and Louis Roop of Sebring, Fla.; granddaughter Jamie Weber of St. Charles, Mo.; and great-grandchildren Kelsey Weber and Richard Weber, both of St. Charles.

She was predeceased by son Michael F. Miller; brother John Preston Roop; and sister Kitty Obermiller.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the Strite Auditorium at Crestwood in the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg. The Revs. Marge A. Maust and Elaine Hartman McGann officiated. The body has been cremated and interment was held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, in the Beaver Creek cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Compassion Fund at Virginia Retirement Community, 1501 Virginia Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22802 or to the Sanctuary United Church of Christ, c/o Jane Mohr, 197 Pheasant Road, McGaheysville, VA 22840-2125.

Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Service, Bridgewater.

Helen R. Akers, 90 of Catonsville

Helen R. Akers, of Catonsville, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at her home after a long illness.

Born March 24, 1914, in Colora, Cecil County, she was the daughter of the late Gertrude Kirk Schoenfelder and Robert Gailey Reynolds. She was the wife of the late George Dawson Akers.

She graduated from Rising Sun High School, where she excelled in athletics.

After marrying, she moved with her husband to Catonsville. She worked at the election polls for 25 years and was a volunteer for the Heart Fund, area captain for the Cancer Association and many years for Leukemia. She was also a volunteer for the Catonsville Senior Center, where she won many blue ribbons for ceramics.

She was a Sunday school teacher at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church and a substitute teacher for six years. She also worked for the food department in Baltimore County for 11 years.

She was an avid gardener and shared her vegetables and flowers with her family, friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed surprising them with her cakes, pies, homemade apple butter and jams. Her hobbies were baking, bowling, gardening and antique collecting.

Surviving are daughters Iva Shipley, Eileen Haines and Nancy Row; grandchildren John Shipley, Deanna Shipley, Don Haines, Dean Haines, Michael Row and Jennifer Little; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 905 Frederick Road, Catonsville. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at MacNabb Funeral Home, 301 Frederick Road, Catonsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 905 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD 2122, or to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, MD 21784.

Albert L. Belt III, 50, of Hampstead

Albert Lylle Belt III, 50, of Hampstead, died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at his home from undetermined causes.

Born July 14, 1954, in Hanover, Pa., he was the son of May Bull Belt of Hampstead and the late Albert Lylle Belt Jr.

He was a truck driver for road construction.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are daughter Stacy L. Wells of Baltimore; and sisters and brothers-in-law Diana and Dave Grote of Millers, Sharon and Charles Eyler of Manchester and Bonnie Belt and fiance Wallis Hanson of Hampstead.

He was predeceased by brother John Belt.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, with the Rev. Jackson Day of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

William P. Farrell Sr., 83, of Manchester

William Patrick Farrell Sr., age 83, of Manchester, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Carroll Hospital Center after a brief illness.

Born May 7, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Edward and Emma Nell Farrell. He was the husband of the late Edith Bosley Farrell, his wife of over 50 years, who died in November.

He was a plumber for L.H. Cranston in Timonium for over 30 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2506 in Hanover, American Legion Post 200 in Hampstead and the Catholic War Veterans of Bonneauville, Pa.

He was a longtime member of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church, where he served on the parish council and was a lector and usher.

An athlete all his life, he served as equipment manager for the Baltimore Colts and was Scout master for the Manchester Boy Scouts. He also ran with the Westminster and Hanover Road Runners Club.

Surviving are children William P. Farrell Jr. of Bel Air and Patricia E. Clabaugh of Hellam, Pa.; grandchildren Nicole and Nathan Clabaugh, both of Gettysburg, Pa., and Christopher Farrell of Bel Air.

A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church, 3071 Park Ave., Manchester, with the Rev. Michael Roach as celebrant. Interment will be in Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, and from 10 a.m. until time of service Monday at the church.

M. Elizabeth Gilbert, 79, of Union Bridge

M. Elizabeth Gilbert, 79, of Union Bridge, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at Carroll Hospital Center.

Born Jan. 22, 1925, near Uniontown, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Florence Clingan Gilbert.

She was a member of the Union Bridge United Methodist Church. She worked as a machine operator at the Union Bridge Clothing Factory and then H.L. Hartz, retiring in 1991. She enjoyed crafts.

Surviving is niece Oneida Reaver of Gettysburg, Pa.

She was predeceased by half-brother Earl L. Myers.

Interment services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, Uniontown, with her pastor, the Rev. Charles Slaugh, officiating.

There will be no public visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to Union Bridge United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 460, Union Bridge, MD 21791.

Arrangements are by Hartzler Funeral Home, Union Bridge.

Gregory L. Hohl, 50, of Laurel

Gregory L. Hohl, 50, of Laurel, died of natural causes Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Resurrection Catholic Church, 3315 Greencastle Road, Burtonsville.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Fleck Funeral Home, 7601 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel.

Norman L. Long Sr., 81, of Westminster

Norman L. Long Sr., 81, of Westminster, died Thursday morning, Dec. 30, 2004, at the Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center after an extended illness.

Born Nov. 1, 1923, in Westminster, he was the son of the late Harvey Lee Long and Helen Marian Phelps Long. He was the husband of Gloria I. Long, who died April 19, 2001.

Before retiring, he was an administrative assistant for the U.S. Government and also managed the Carroll Theater for a number of years.

He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, a member of VFW Molleville Farm Post 467 and the Westminster United Methodist Church.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law Norman L. Jr. and Dolly Long of Westminster and Gary L. and Sally Long of Ellicott City; brother and sister-in-law Bernard L. and Maisel Long of Frederick; grandchildren Norman L. Long III, Christopher S. Long, Melinda Marie Long, Eric Thomas Long and Gregory Collin Long; and great-grandchildren Hailey, Casey and Ian Long.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, with the Rev. Jennifer Brown officiating. Interment will be in Meadow Branch cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Carl N. Rhoten, 80, of Finksburg

Carl Norman Rhoten, 80, of Finksburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Westminster Nursing and Convalescent Center, Westminster.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Finksburg cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown.

George R. 'Bobby' Shaw, 66, of Thurmont

George Robert "Bobby" Shaw, 66, of Thurmont, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at the College View Nursing Home, Frederick.

Born Jan. 20, 1938, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late George Oliver and Georgia Lee Craigie Shaw Hawkins. He was the husband of Betty Jane Shaw.

He was a retired truck driver for the Montgomery County Liquor Board. He was a volunteer at the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department in 1954. In 1960, he went to the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company, where he was a lifetime member and was responsible for dances for 25 years and their auctions for 29 years. He also drove the Mount Airy Prevention Queen to all parades for over nine years.

He was past president of the Mount Airy Lions Club, where he served in every office except secretary and treasurer. He was a charter member and past vice president of the Old Four County JC's. He was once vice president of the Carroll County Fire Police, a member and past vice president of the Damascus Travel Club, a member of the Frederick Moose Lodge 371 and a member of the Prospect United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men. He was instrumental in their many auctions and was in charge of a country music show to help rebuild the church after a 1975 fire. He was an avid bowler and dancer and enjoyed country music.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter Noralee Gochenour of Smithsburg; son Gerald Shaw of Mount Airy; grandchildren Melanie Gochenour and Karleigh Hubble; stepchildren Earl W. Staley Jr. and wife Candi of Frederick and Kevin B. Staley and wife Kristin of Germantown; step-grandchildren Kayla and Kristopher Staley; step-great-granddaughter Kayleigh Shuff; stepsister Alice May Fritz and husband Charles of Frederick; stepbrother Leroy Hawkins of Kissimme, Fla.; and special friends Dana Ferree and son Trevor, both of Mount Airy, and Kaycee Weddle.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Interment will be in Prospect cemetery, Mount Airy.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, where the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company will hold a memorial service at 8 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, where the Lions Club will hold a memorial service at 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company, 702 S. Main St., Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Helen P. Sledd, 91, of Westminster

Helen P. Sledd, 91, of Westminster, died Thursday morning, Dec. 30, 2004, at her home.

Born Aug. 11, 1913, in Adams County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Paul J. and Edna Bair Miller. She was the wife of the late Willis E. Sledd.

She was a farmer and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Littlestown, Pa. She graduated from Littlestown High School in 1931.

Surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by sister Martha Small and brother Earl Miller.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Little's Funeral Home, 34 Maple Ave., Littlestown, with her pastor, the Rev. Thomas E. Stellhorn, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Carmel cemetery, Littlestown.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 53 W. King St., Littlestown, PA 17340.
