JOHN H. UPDYKE

Major John Herbert Updyke, U.S. Marine Corps (retired), 61, a resident of Riviera, Texas, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2003, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Born Sept. 6, 1941, in Charleston, W.Va., to D. Updyke and Elizabeth Ford McComas, he moved from his birthplace with his parents to Oakland.

He attended the University of Maryland before becoming a U.S. Marine Corps A-4 Skyhawk pilot. John served several tours of duty in Vietnam. After 21 years of service with the U.S. Marine Corps, he retired with the rank of major. After his retirement he continued his aviation career as a simulator flight instructor at the Kingsville Naval Air Station.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby V. Updyke, Riviera; three sons, Randy (Tina) Johnson of Corpus Christi, James E. (Suzanne) Johnson of San Antonio, Texas, and John Herbert (Michele) Updyke Jr. of Corpus Christi; his mother, Elizabeth McComas, Oakland; one brother, Buzz (Carolyn) Updyke, Oakland; four grandsons, Brandon Johnson and John Christopher Johnson, both of Corpus Christi, John Herbert Updyke III, Corpus Christi, and Austin Heath Johnson, San Antonio; one granddaughter, Jessica Eliz-abeth Johnson, San Antonio; one nephew, Branden Updyke, Oakland; and one niece, Christa Updyke, Oakland.

Public visitation took place on Monday, May 26, 2003, from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, Kingsville, Texas.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the McFall Memorial Chapel, Kingsville Naval Air Station, with Michael L. Schutz, Chaplain Corps, USN, officiating. Burial with military honors followed in Kingsville at Chamberlain cemetery.

John was a cherished husband of 36 years, his three sons considered him an awesome father, and the grandchildren said he was the greatest grandpa.

Services were entrusted to Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., Kingsville.

ROBERT E. DODGE

Robert Elwood "Bob" Dodge, 83, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at his home.

Born Nov. 17, 1919, in Terra Alta, he was a son of the late Ezra Benson and Dessie Shaffer Dodge. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Virginia (Peg) Smith, in 1992; his second wife, Henrietta Warner Dodge, in 1994; three brothers, Harland, James, and Charles; and two sisters, Barbara Jean Dodge and Virginia (Dodge) Casteel Humph-ries.

He joined the CC camp in Elkins, W.Va., at the age of 16, and later moved to Baltimore, where he retired as maintenance supervisor of Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation. He was a member of the Bay Country Chevrolet Club since 1986, and an active Mason. He was also a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Terra Alta.

He is survived by his wife of nine years, Josephine Tasker Dodge; one son, Robert S. Dodge, Annapolis; two daughters, Ellen Joan Sullivan, Ellicott City, and Barbara J. Myrick, Baltimore; two stepdaughters, Carolyn F. Hill, Mtn. Lake Park, and Linda S. Powell, Terra Alta; one sister, Mary (Dodge) Groves, Terra Alta; one brother, George Dodge, Baltimore; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was a Human Gift Registry donor through West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Terra Alta, with the Rev. Ernest Metheny officiating.

A graveside service will held at a later date.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Hospice Care, P.O. Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520.

NORMA C. RINGER

Norma C. Ringer, 67, Windber, Pa., formerly of McHenry, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at her home.

Born March 5, 1936, in Albright (Valley Point), W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Warren and Erma Martin Miller. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Harland Gene Miller.

She attended the McHenry United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Crystal Varner, Stoystown, Pa., Yvette Penrod, Johnstown, Pa., and Carla Ringer, Thomasville, Pa.; two brothers, Ivon Miller, Albright, and William (Sonny) Miller, Bruceton Mills, W.Va.; six sisters, Shirley DeVall, Albright, Claudia Clark, Albright, Jane Kelly, Albright, Kay Fulk, Bruceton Mills, Linda Martin, Princeton, W.Va., and Patsy Miller, Kingwood, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at the Carl R. Spear Funeral Home, Bruceton Mills, and at the Centenary United Methodist Church, where a service was held on Wednesday, May 28, with the Rev. Gary Reed officiating.

Interment was in the Centenary cemetery, Bruceton Mills.

SARAH V. PIFER

Sarah V. Pifer, 82, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at the home of her daughter.

Born Oct. 2, 1920, in the Stemple Ridge community, she was a daughter of the late Mack and Ethel Moats Bohon. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Alice Bohon; one son, Joseph Bohon; one sister, Mary Rinehart; and one grandson.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Oakland.

She is survived by two daughters, Bertie Trembly, Terra Alta, W.Va., and Cindy Moats, Parsons, W.Va.; one son, Pete Pifer, Terra Alta; three brothers, Russell Bohon, Terra Alta, Glenn Bohon, Texas, and Roy Bohon, St. George, W.Va.; one sister, Ruby Lipscomb, Thomas, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Friends were received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, where a service was held on Wednesday, May 28, with Pastor Tom Hughes officiating.

Interment was in the Fairview cemetery, St. George.

MARY ELLEN WICKWIRE

Mary Ellen Wickwire, 86, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Monday, May 26, 2003, at her home.

Born April 13, 1917, in Grafton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Harvey Harsh and Katherine Belle Kelley Brown. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Warden "Popeye" and William "Bid" Brown; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Terra Alta. She retired from Hopemont State Hospital after working 27 years.

She is survived by her husband, Ben Wickwire, Terra Alta; five daughters, Mary Jo Collins, Kingwood, W.Va., Marti Nelson, Manassas, Va., Barbara Guthrie, Oakland, Elsie Blackburn, Darlington, and Debbie Reckart, Cranesville, W.Va.; one son, John Strawser, Terra Alta; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, today, Thursday, May 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A service will be at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Friday, with viewing from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., the time of the service. The Rev. Ernest D. Metheny will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Terra Alta cemetery.

RONALD C. CLARK

Ronald Coleman Clark, 64, Elk Garden, W.Va., formerly of Keyser, W.Va., and Cumberland, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at his residence.

Born Feb. 27, 1939, in Lynchburg, Va., he was the son of the late Robert and Anna M. (Beal) Clark. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Delores Ann Clark.

He was retired from Royal Dunlogan Dairy of Baltimore.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Clark, Cresaptown, and Jeffrey Clark, Cumberland; and six grandchildren.

At his request his body was cremated.

There will be no visitation or services.

The Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, is in charge of arrangements.

E. PAULINE HENLINE

E. Pauline Henline, 87, Oakland, formerly of Crellin, died on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born Dec. 17, 1915, in Terra Alta, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Ernest C. Calhoun and Anna (Winters) Calhoun. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore "Hank" Henline; one son, William E. Henline; and one grandson.

She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Shaffer, Oakland; three sons, Charles E. Henline,, Ijamsville, Gerald E. Henline, Jessup, and Thomas F. Henline Sr., Oakland; two sisters, Dorothy Jordan, Crellin, and Annabel Knotts, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home in Oakland, today, Thursday, May 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. C. David Shisler officiating.

Interment will be in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or the Crellin United Brethren Church.

SUSIE M. MILLER

Susie M. Miller, 67, McHenry, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born Jan. 9, 1936, in Accident, she was a daughter of the late Clarence A. Knox Sr. and Ida E. (Glotfelty) Knox. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, L. Annabelle Bittinger and Carrie E. Knox; and three brothers, James I. "Ted" Knox, Clarence A. "Junior" Knox Jr., and Carlton Knox.

She was a member of the Loch Lynn Church of God, the leader of the Thursday Morning Prayer Group, and worked with the church's tape ministry and prayer chain.

She is survived by her husband, Glenn C. Miller; one daughter, I. Denise Glascock, Richmond, Va.; and two grandsons.

Friends will be received at the temporary home of the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, across from Wal-Mart, from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, May 29, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday.

A service will be held at the Loch Lynn Church of God on Saturday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Robert Fletcher and Rev. Ivan Ackerman officiating.

Interment will be in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Loch Lynn Church of God Thursday Morning Prayer Group, P.O. Box 2027, Mtn. Lake Park, MD 21550.

JONATHAN J. ECKHART

Dr. Jonathan Jacob Eckhart, 73, Deep Creek Lake, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

Born Nov. 7, 1929, in Eckhart Mines, he was a son of the late Charles and Helen (Radcliff) Eckhart.

Dr. Eckhart was a 1947 graduate of Allegany High School, he graduated from Lincoln State Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, Ind., and did graduate work at Frostburg State University. He practiced as a chiropractor in the Cumberland area for 50 years and was in partnership with Dr. Audie Klingler at Allegany Chiropractic Center.

He served in the Korean War, 1952-1953, and served with the Maryland National Guard for 35 years retiring as a colonel; he was commander of the Green Beret Special Forces.

He was a member of the Mountain Lodge 99 AF&AM, the Valley of Cumberland Scottish Rite, and the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple. He was a lifetime member of the Cumberland Elks BPO Lodge 114 and served as a director on the foundation board at Frostburg State University.

He is survived by his wife Sue (Bartlett) Eckhart; two sons, J. Brad Eckhart, Orefield, Pa., and Jay L. Eckhart, Newport News, Va.; two daughters, Debra Simpson, Sugarland, Texas, and Penny L. Eckhart, Oakland; three stepchildren, Don R. Sensabaugh Jr. of Charleston, W.Va., David Sensabaugh, Clarysville, and Sheri Sensabaugh-Betz, Clarysville; 17 grandchildren; one brother, H. Edwin Eckhart, Barton; and one sister, Edith Elvee, Clarysville.

Friends were received in the Hafer Funeral Service, LaVale chapel, on Saturday, Aug. 9.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Interment was in Eckhart cemetery, with military rites accorded by the Combined Veteran Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Eckhart to the Shriner's Crippled Children, P.O. Box 1416, Cumberland, MD 21502; or to the Hospice of Garrett County, P.O. Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550.

REV. FENTON H. PLATTER

Rev. Fenton H. Platter, 92, Roanoke, Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, in Roanoke.

Born Feb. 16, 1911, in Jennings, he was a son of the late Henry and Anna (Handwerk) Platter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mable E. (Orendorf) Platter, in 1997.

Rev. Platter served as pastor of the following Churches of the Brethren, beginning in 1947: Frostburg; Front Royal, Va.; Green Hill in Salem, Va. and Cumberland. He also served as interim pastor at various Churches of the Brethren in the Roanoke area following his retirement.

Surviving are his children, Lowell, Roanoke, David, Fincastle, Va., Henry, Eagle Rock, Va., and Ruth Sullivan, Venice, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville.

A service was conducted in the funeral home on Monday, Aug. 11, with the Rev. J. Rogers Fike and the Rev. Timothy Monn officiating.

Interment was in Grantsville cemetery.

SHIRLEY R. DAVIS

Shirley Rose Davis, 66, Woodland Hills, Calif., died Thursday, July 31, 2003, in the West Hills Medical Center Hospital, after a long illness of emphysema.

Born Jan. 12, 1937, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late William Ewald Ruehl and Pearl Elizabeth (Hansrote) Ruehl.

She was a member of the Methodist Church. She was a homemaker, and retired from Lindberg Nutrition Stores in 1990. She was a Fort Hill High School graduate, class of 1955. She was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary and several other organizations.

Surviving are her husband, Howard A. Davis Sr.; three children, Ronald L. Wolfe Jr., Calabasas, Calif., one daughter, Melinda K. (Wolfe) Nelson, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Howard A. Davis Jr., San Luis Obispo, Calif.; six grandchildren; one brother, William Ruehl, Parkersburg, W.Va.; and one sister, Elizabeth (Ruehl) Friend, Oakland.

A funeral service was conducted Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park, Westlake Village, Calif.
