J. WILLIAM OWENS

J. William Owens, 79, Cumberland, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.

Born July 25, 1924, in Oakland, he was the son of the late Joseph William and Pearl (Grindle) Owens. He was also preceded in death by his wife, June (Spear) Owens.

He was a retired supervisor for the Maryland Department of Employment Security. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Western Maryland Democratic Club, and AARP.

He is survived by one daughter, Christy L. Montgomery, Accident; and one grandson.

Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville.

A service was conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 8, with the Rev. Barry Maust officiating.

Interment was in the Oakland cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to either Cherry Glade Building Fund or the American Heart Association.

HERMAN H. STEIDING SR.

Herman H. Steiding Sr., 91, Swanton, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at his home.

Born Nov. 13, 1911, in Swanton, he was the son of the late Herman Steiding and Sue (Beckman) Steiding. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Freeda (Howell) Steiding; and one daughter.

He was a retired dairy farmer.

He is survived by one son, Herman H. Steiding Jr., Aurora, W.Va.; two daughters, Bonnie J. Sunny, Swanton, and Martha S. Slawter, Aurora; 11 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland.

A service was conducted at the funeral home today, Thursday, Oct. 9, with the Rev. Father Donald Parson officiating.

Interment was in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials take the form of contributions to Hospice of Garrett County or the Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad.

HAROLD E. DILLSWORTH SR.

Harold E. Dillsworth Sr., 63, Eglon, W.Va., formerly of Oakland, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at his home.

Born April 4, 1941, in Crellin, he was a son of the late Elmer H. and Pearl (Hixenbaugh) Dillsworth.

He was a retired mechanic for the Manheim Stone Quarry and was a self-employed timberman.

He is survived by two daughters, Jenny L. Johnson, Parsons, W.Va., and Dawn R. Gauthier, Hurst, Texas; four sons, Harold E. Dillsworth Jr., Red House, Steven D. Dillsworth, Aurora, W.Va., Shawn J. Dillsworth, Terra Alta, W.Va., and James A. Dillsworth, Oakland; one sister, Josephine Resh, Accident; two brothers, Howard F. Dillsworth and Michael S. Dillsworth, both of Oakland; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Friends will be received at the temporary home of the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, across from Wal-Mart along U.S. Route 219, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 9.

A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Donald Matthews officiating.

Interment will be in the Underwood cemetery, Oakland.

ELLAREE L. WHEELER

Ellaree L. Wheeler, 68, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born Feb. 14, 1935, in Brandonville, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Alden B. "Jack" and Jessie M. Moyers Copeman.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Terra Alta.

She is survived by her husband, James E. Wheeler, Alpine Lake; one daughter, Cindee Lou Wheeler, Alpine Lake; one brother, Edwin Copeman, Baltimore; and two sisters, Rosetta Rodeheaver, Oakland, and Rita Buxton, Bel Air.

Friends were received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta.

Friends were also received at the First United Methodist Church today, Thursday, Oct. 9, where a service was held with the Rev. Michael L. Daniels officiating.

Interment was in the Shady Grove cemetery, Bruceton Mills, W.Va.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Carl R. Spear Funeral Home, Bruceton Mills–Brandonville, W.Va.

BETTY E. SMALL

Betty Ellen Martin Small, 82, Roanoke, Va., died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, in Roanoke.

She was a daughter of the late Britten and Mary Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James G. Small; and one daughter, Mary "Molly" Shireen Small.

She graduated from St. Mary's College, St. Mary's City, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by one son, Marc James Small, Roanoke; two sisters, Emily Kutler, Annapolis, and Barbara Sweitzer, Roanoke; one brother, Leo Martin, Mtn. Lake Park; and one grandson.

There was no funeral or memorial service.

At her request, her body was cremated and the ashes will be scattered over the Chesapeake Bay.

GEORGE WATSON JR.

George Watson Jr., 78, of Dunbar Township, Pa., formerly of Mtn. Lake Park, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at his home.

Born Aug. 17, 1925, in Dunbar, Pa., he was a son of Bessie Humphreys Watson, Austin, Texas, and the late George Watson Sr. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jean Humberson Watson; a daughter, Betty Watson; and two sisters, Velma Hoover and Audrey Uhazie.

He had been living in Mtn. Lake Park for the last 20 years and had just recently moved back to Dunbar Township. Prior to his retirement he worked as a railroad engineer for the Western Maryland Railroad. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Elks, the Eagles, and the National Rifle Association, all in Oakland.

He was a member of the Selbysport United Methodist Church in Maryland. He did a lot of gunsmith work for several different companies.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by five sons, George Watson III, Alabama, Herb Watson, Connellsville, Pa., Scott Watson, Vanderbilt, Pa., Roger Watson, Dunbar, and Cullen Watson, Hope Mills, N.C.; five daughters, Audrey Maddas, Connellsville, Paula Porterfield, Connellsville, Georgia Brown, Dawson, Marynee Robaugh, Connellsville, and Alberta Chronowski, Mt. Pleasant, Pa.; one sister Ruby Uhazie, Austin; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Family and friends were received in the Brooks Funeral Home Inc., Connellsville.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 26, in the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert L. Wratchford officiating.

Interment was in the Humberson cemetery, Friendsville.

LeROY RILEY

LeRoy Riley, 81, Bloomington, formerly of Holden, Mass., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at his residence.

Born Dec. 14, 1921, in Shallmar, he was the son the late Charles E. Riley Sr. and Bessie E. (Nelson) Riley. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Fagan and Delores "Bo" Pettit.

He was a vice president of the Frank H. Miles Company Funeral Home, Holden, and a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II. He served in the Pacific theater of operations. He was past president and past district governor of the Holden Exchange Club, member of Massachusetts State Funeral Directors Association, past president of Aleppo Temple of the Greater Boston Area, past president of the Worchester County Shriners, 32nd Degree Mason, 1939 graduate of Kitzmiller High School, and a graduate of the New England Institute of Embalmers.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (Miles) Riley; two daughters, Marci A. Capone, Oakham, Mass., and Leah K. Freedman, Worchester, Mass.; former wife, Madelaine J. Riley, Worchester; two sisters, Frances Hardesty, Bloomington, and Norma Lee Cooper, Worthington, W.Va.; three brothers, Charles E. Riley Jr., Bloomington, Ernest A. Riley Sr., Cresaptown, and Darl T. Riley, Bloomington; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the chapel of Restlawn Memorial Gardens on Monday, Nov. 24, with the Rev. Charles Ronald Cooper officiating.

Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cumberland, was in charge of arrangements.

Military honors were accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

OSCAR M. LANTZ

Oscar Marion Lantz, 97, Aurora, W.Va., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born July 4, 1906, in Pendleton County, W.Va., he was a son of the late Isaac Mayberry and Carrie Mae Lawrence Lantz. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Viola E. Lantz; one brother, Ollie; and four sisters, Emma, Mary, Olive, and Eva.

He worked as a farmer.

He is survived by two sons, Richard Lantz, Oakland, and Ronald Lantz, Ridgeley, W.Va.; one daughter, Donna Duley, Independence, W.Va.; two sisters, Myrtle Smith, Brunswick, Ohio, and Eleanor Knotts, Akron, Ohio; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at the Hinkle Funeral Home, Davis, W.Va., where a service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 25, with the Rev. Ivan Ackerman officiating.

Interment was in the Buena cemetery, Canaan Valley.

OTIS K. WILLT

Otis Kelly Willt, 77, Huntsville, Ark., died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at his residence.

Born July 30, 1962, in Garrett County, he was a son of the late Charles W. and Freda I. Willt. He was also preceded in death by one son, Mark J., in 1990; one brother, William G., in 1986; and one sister, Ruth E. Harper, in 1992.

He was a graduate of Kingston High School, Kingston, N.Y. He served in the Air Force during World War II, and after the service he was self-em-ployed in the electrical business and H.M.S. Electrical Company, Fairfax, Va. He was also active in the American Legion and VFW in Arkansas.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia M. (Vansteenburg) Willt; two sons, Michael J. and Eric C. Willt, both of Fairfax; one daughter, Ellen Lee Gossin, Florida; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Friends were received at the Brasheare Funeral Home, Huntsville, where a service was held, with the Rev. James Harris officiating.

Interment was in the Big Sandy cemetery, Huntsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's local American Heart Association.

DORIS BAIRD

Doris Alexander Baird, 77, McMurray, Pa., died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at the Greenery in Canonsburg, Pa.

Born May 9, 1926, in Accident, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Sara (Frickey) Alexander. She was also preceded in death by one son, Gary E. Baird; one brother, Robert Alexander; and one sister, Mary Ann (Alexander) Peterson.

She was active in the Library Baptist Church, and was a member of the Sweet Sixties group.

She is survived by one son, James Baird, Eighty Four, Pa.; two daughters, Diane Baird, McMurray, and Donna Selph, Bradenton, Fla.; one sister, Shirley Sisler, Garrettsville Ohio; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Friends will be received at Beinhauers' funeral home, Peters Township, Pa., on Friday, Nov. 28, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A service will be held at the funeral home at Saturday at 11 a.m., with Pastor Albert Finney officiating.

Interment will be in Forest Lawn Gardens.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Library Baptist Church, 81 Walter Long Road, Finleyville, PA 15332.

OVERTON B. WALKER

Overton B. Walker, 83, Westernport, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.

Born Sept. 4, 1920, in Luke, he was a son of the late Robert L. Walker and Naomi (Brumback) Walker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, H. Louise (Spriggs) Walker, in 1983; one brother, Lee Walker; and one sister, Beatrice Hershberger.

He was Pentecostal by faith. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Victory Post 155 American Legion in Westernport and a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 52 in Piedmont. He was a life member of VFW Post 5280 in Lonaconing, and a member of Elk Lodge 2481 in Oakland, Moose Lodge 662 in Keyser, and Fraternal Order of the Police Lodge 40. He was a former member of Tri-Towns Fire Company 1 in Piedmont and the Luke Volunteer Fire Company.

He retired from Westvaco Corp. in Feb. 1986, with 45 years of service. He worked in machine coating and the outside department as truck driver at the time of his retirement. He served as the mayor of Luke from 1980 until 1982.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Hoopengarner of Keyser, W.Va.; one sister Mildred Moorehead, Westernport; four brothers, Joseph Walker, Eufaula, Ala., Ralph Walker, Rockingham, N.C., Robert Walker, Keyser, and Forrest Walker, Conneaut, Ohio; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

Friends were received at Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, W.Va., where a service was held Wednesday, Nov. 26, with the Rev. Gary Fazenbaker officiating.

Interment was in Potomac Memorial Gardens in Keyser.

The various local military service organizations provided military rites.
