JOHNIE E. WILBURN
Johnie Eugene "Butch" Wilburn, 61, Grantsville, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at WMHS Braddock Campus, Cumberland.
Born Sept. 3, 1946, in Jennings, he was a son of the late Marshall and Eva (Hoover) Wilburn. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Luther Wilburn.
He was a road construction worker, and he attended Jennings Church of God.
He is survived by his wife of seven years, Viola "Tootie" (Bittinger) Wilburn; two sons, Robert Wilburn, Grantsville, and Philip Wilburn, Cumberland; five daughters, Catherine "Sis" McKenzie, Grantsville; Vivian "Toots" Miller, Hagerstown, Marlene Wilburn, Cumberland, Angie Platter, Grantsville; and Lilly Wilburn, Uniontown, Pa.; four brothers, Roy, Rocky, Lawrence, and Marshall Wilburn, all of Grantsville; 10 step-children; and numerous grandchildren.
Friends are being received today, Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service will be held on Friday, Aug. 29, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. George Plants officiating.
Interment will be in Bittinger cemetery.
DONALD L. STEWART
Donald L. "Slim" Stewart Sr., 76, Oakland, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Oakland Nursing and Rehab Center, Oakland.
Born Feb. 12, 1932, in Terra Alta, W.Va., he was a son of the late Lewis L. and Mabel V. (Heath) Stewart. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Duke Stewart and Albert Stewart; one sister, Geraldine Baker; and his infant twin brother and sister, Paul and Pauline Stewart.
He was a truck driver for 37 years with the Oakland Street Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
He is survived by one son, Donald L. Stewart Jr., Accident; three sisters, Ruth Nair, Oldtown, Betty Nair, Cumberland, and Mary Goss, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; one brother, Joseph Stewart, King of Prussia, Pa.; three step-grandchildren; and one step-greatgrandson.
At his request, his body was cremated.
A memorial inurnment service will be held at Pleasant Valley cemetery, Oakland, on Friday, Aug. 29, at 3 p.m., with Rev. Joe Spiker officiating.
Inurnment will follow.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans’ organizations in southern Garrett County and by a detachment from Camp Dawson, Kingwood, W.Va.
The Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, W.Va., is in charge of arrangements.
GERTRUDE G. SCHAEFFER
Gertrude G. Schaeffer, 100, Gormania, W.Va., died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at her home.
Born Aug. 15, 1908, in Dobin, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Edward R. and Laura C. Rager. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Schaeffer; two sons, Edward R. and David Lee Schaeffer; one grandchild, Edward Charles "Skip" Schaeffer; one great-grandson, Brandon Tiffany.
Mrs. Schaeffer was an active member of Gormania United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
She and her husband operated the Ft. Pendleton Service Station on Rt. 50. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and an active volunteer at the voting polls.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty Burton of Scottsboro, Ala.; one daughter-in-law, Nita Schaeffer, Gormania; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her very dear caregivers and friends.
The family will receive friends at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland, today, Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m.
A graveside service and burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, at Mt. Storm cemetery, Mt. Storm, W.Va., with the Rev. William McCallister officiating.
WINIFRED J. CALLIS
Winifred Juanita Callis, 78, Oakland, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 22, 1929, in Oakland, she was a daughter of the late Delphus and Nellie O. (Sisk) Callis. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin L. Callis and Carl Callis.
She is survived by one sister, Emma Catherine Beck, Oakland.
A memorial service was on Sunday, Aug. 24, at Oak Park Church of the Brethren, Mtn. Lake Park, with the Rev. Mel Menker officiating.
There will be a gathering for friends and family one hour prior to the service.

A joint inurnment service was held at Bayard cemetery on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, for Beatrice M. Beck, 90, Bayard, who died Wednesday, Aug. 6, and Jack N. Casteel, 86, Bayard, who died Sunday, Aug. 3, both at the Oakland Nursing and Rehab Center, Oakland.
Military honors for Mr. Casteel were accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans’ organizations in southern Garrett County and a detachment from Camp Dawson, Kingwood, W.Va.

MARK R. KIGHT
Mark Ryan Kight, 22, Oakland, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Preston County Hospital, Kingwood.
Born Sept. 20, 1985, in Oakland, he was a son of Carl and Marilyn (Colville) Kight.
Mark worked at Garrett Mine Supply.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Steven Aric Kight and wife Alisha, Oakland; two nieces, Kristen and Abbigale, Oakland; maternal grandmother Lorraine Colville, Oakland; and paternal grandfather Sheridan Kight, Kitzmiller.
Friends were received at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held on Tuesday, Sept. 2, with the Rev. Donald E. Matthews officiating.
Interment followed in Pleasant Valley cemetery.
MARVIN R. MURPHY
Marvin Russell Murphy, 63, Grantsville, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in his home.
Born Feb. 17, 1945, in Swanton, he was a son of the late Glen and Grace (Handwerk) Murphy. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Alvin.
He was a tire builder for Kelly Springfield Tires and a custodian for the Garrett County Board of Education, from which he retired. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Church of God.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beverly Ann (Sines) Murphy, whom he married
on Nov. 26, 1966; two sons, Marvin Glen Murphy and Michael Sean Murphy, both of Frederick; and one sister, Thelma Brant, McHenry.
Friends were received at Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 3, with the Rev. Owen H. Preston officiating.
Interment was held in Murphy cemetery.
AGNES A. GEOGHAN
Agnes A. Geoghan, 84, Conway, S.C., and formerly of Friendsville and Terra Alta, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at Conway Medical Center.
Born Jan. 16, 1924, in Glen Allen, Va., she was a daughter of the late Charles Robert and Grace Gertrude (Bellam) Kiser. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Roger Walter Kiser; and one sister, Dorothy Hope Taylor.
She was a homemaker and member of Laurel Run Church of God.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Philip Joseph Geoghan Jr.; three sons, Philip Joseph Geoghan III, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Charles Patrick Geoghan, Kearneysville, W.Va., and Timothy Earl Geoghan, Baltimore; four daughters, Donna Joyce Fournier, Crestview, Fla., Sharon Jean Nelson, Baltimore, Pamela Sue Treadaway, Conway, and Elizabeth Ann Hargett, Chambersburg, Pa.; one brother, Joseph Robert Kiser, Davidsonville; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville, where a service was conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 3, with the Rev. Dennis Dawson officiating.
Interment was held in Maryland State Veterans cemetery, Rocky Gap.
SAMUEL D. SHUGARS JR.
Samuel David Shugars Jr., 85, McHenry, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 26, 1923, in Shippensburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel David Shugars Sr. and Anna Zinn Shugars. He was also preceded in death by one son, Forrest Shugars; two sisters, Virginia S. Griffin and Helen Spence; and one sister-in-law, Gladys Wood.
Mr. Shugars grew up and attended school in Hancock. He served in the Army Air Force, 302nd Fighter Squadron, as a staff sergeant and air traffic controller in Iwo Jima. He also was a swim instructor while stationed in Hawaii.
He worked for 42 years as an engineer for Penn Central & Conway Railroad while living in Hagerstown. After retiring from the railroad, he moved to Deep Creek Lake, Oakland, in 1987. From 1987 until 2002, he was the property manager at Red Run & Ski Harbor condominiums. He loved to dance and travel.
He was a member of Christ Reformed Church, Hagerstown, the VFW Post 695, Redmen, the Eagles Club Inc., the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engine Men, and the United Transportation Union.
He is survived by his wife, Goldie M. (Wood) Shugars; one daughter, Susan M. Langenstein and husband Chuck, Hagerstown; one stepson, Mitchell Forsyth and wife Diane, Havre, Mont.; three granddaughters, Tammy S. Arnold and husband Rusty, Hagerstown, and Ashley Forsyth and Jennifer Forsyth, both of Havre; one great-grandson, Logan M. Arnold, Hagerstown; two brothers-in-law, James Wood, Hagerstown, and Robert Wood, Frederick; niece Veronica (Ronnie) Eighelberger; and four nephews, Paul Steven Griffin, David Ragan Griffin, David Spence, and Jeff Spence.
Friends were received at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland, and the Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown, where a service was held this morning, Thursday, Sept. 4, with the Rev. Greg Meserole officiating.
Interment with military honors was held at Cedar Lawn cemetery.
RAY V. McMANIS
A memorial service will be held for Ray V. "Rick" McManis, Calais, Maine, on Friday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Oakland.

EVA L. LANDON
Eva L. Landon, 72, Prince George, widow of Frederick W. Landon Sr., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008.
Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Russell P. and Gladys Gibson Skidmore.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hopewell, W.Va.
Mrs. Landon is survived by one son, Frederick W. Landon Jr. and wife Connie, Prince George; one daughter, Pamelia S. Henry and husband David, Prince George; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Landon-Neubauer and husband Jens, Germany, Jonathan F. Landon Sr. and wife Kimberly, Samantha J. Landon, Jessica C. Reiter, David R. Henry Jr., and Angela J. Henry, all of Prince George, and Jeremy W. Reiter, Hopewell; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Landon Sundbeck, Henrico, and Jonathan F. Landon Jr. and Ian P. Landon, both of Prince George; one sister, Hazel Nazelrod, Newport News, W.Va.; three brothers, Patrick Skidmore and wife Vonda, West Virginia, Russell P. Skidmore Jr. and wife Doris, Newport News, and Ronnie Skidmore and wife Darlene, Maryland; nephews Patrick and Richard DeWitt, Newport News; nieces Robin Clutter and Amy Thomas, Maryland; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life and "A Time to Remember" were held on Sunday, Aug. 31, at Greenfield Senior Living, Petersburg, Va.

THOMAS E. SAVAGE
Thomas "Woody" Elwood Savage, 78, Oakland, died Thursday, August 21, 2008, at his residence.
Born July 28, 1930, in Sang Run, he was a son of the late Thomas Ward and Della Ann (Rodeheaver) Savage. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Juanita R. "Teed" (Friend) Savage; an infant daughter, Juanita Marie; three brothers, William, Ward and Robert Savage; and one sister, Leota Ward.
Mr. Savage was a bridge foreman for the Garrett County Roads Department and a member of the Assembly of God.
He is survived by three sons, Dennis Savage and Eric D. Savage and wife Tracy, all of Oakland, and Steven Savage and wife Valerie, Swanton; three daughters, Connie L. Simmons and husband Dave, Mtn. Lake Park, Diane E. White and companion Shawn Strawser, Oakland, and Teresa A. Hamilton, Swanton; two brothers, Samuel G. and Donald L. Savage, both of Oakland; two sisters, Della Jean Barillo and Martha Jane Lawton, both of Oakland; 11 grandchildren, Johni, Jaime, Jay, Josh, Stephanie, Jonathan, Kati, Chelsea, Lane, Brynn, and Kade; 12 great-grandchildren, Zack, Olivia, Luke, Ian, Eli, Sophie, Jordyn, Justyn, Jimmy, Jackson, Tucker, and Colton; and a very special companion, Louise Peck.
At his request, his body was cremated.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. at Newman Funeral Home, Accident/McHenry, with the Rev. Randy Tichnell officiating.

CHARLES W. LINDEMAN SR.
Charles William "Bill" Lindeman Sr., 72, Jacksonville, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at WMHS Braddock Campus, Cumberland.
Born Aug. 16, 1936, in Meyersdale, Pa., he was a son of the late John W. and Maggie Mae (Fate) Lindeman. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, Paul, and John Lindeman; and three sisters, Alberta Brown, Mary Lindeman, and Betty Durst.
He was a truck driver for Jacksonville Water Co.
He is survived by two sons, Charles W. Lindeman Jr., Salisbury, Pa., and Roger Lindeman, Boynton, Pa.; one daughter, Rebecca Broadwater, Grantsville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends were received in Newman Funeral Home, Salisbury, Pa., where a service was conducted today, Thursday, Sept. 4, with the Rev. Alan Birkby officiating.
Interment was held privately.
