MARY F. LUCAS

Mary Frances (Streets) Lucas, 78, Mtn. Lake Park, died on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at Oakland Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born on Sept. 8, 1929, in Bloomington, she was a daughter of the late Delbert and Barbara Streets. She was also preceded in death by an infant sister in 1931; and two brothers, Delbert Jr. in 2000 and Richard Lee, in 2006.

She was Protestant by faith.

She is survived by her children, Janet Sanner, Atlanta, Ga., James Lucas, Grapevine, Texas, Thomas Lucas, Somerset, Pa., and Robert Lucas, Moorefield, W.Va.; two sisters, Alice Magruder, Midland, and Shirley Perando, Old Fields, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, where a service was conducted on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Internment was held in Bloomington cemetery, Bloomington.

TWILA D. GEORGE

Twila Delight George, 91, Cumberland, formerly of West Salisbury, Pa., died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Golden Living Center, Meyersdale, Pa.

Born Feb. 18, 1917, in the Cove, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Reba (Smith) Bowser. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert George; one son, John; one step-grandson; two brothers, Charles and Ernest Bowser; and one sister, Freda Reichenbecher.

She was a seamstress for Salisbury and Meyersdale garment factories. She was a member of the State Line United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Duane George, Watertown, Conn., and Delmas George, Salisbury; two daughters, Mary Albright, Salisbury, and Wanda Shumaker, Cumberland; one brother, Merle Bowser, Grantsville; three sisters, Edith May Yommer, Addison, Pa., and Donna Walker and Gloria Reckner, both of Salisbury; 18 grandchildren; two step-grand-sons; 32 great-grandchilddren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Newman Funeral Home, Salisbury, where a service will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Scott Shumaker officiating.

Interment will be in Addison cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to State Line United Methodist Church or a charity of choice.

RALPH WILLIAMS

Ralph Williams, 82, Bayard, W.Va., died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at his home.

Born Sept. 2, 1925, in Fairmont, W.Va., he was a son of the late Adolph and Mary (Martin) Williams. He was also preceded in death by one son, Thomas Williams.

Mr. Williams worked as a lineman for the B&O Railroad for 18 years and for the Dobin Coal Company, Bayard, W.Va., for the past 30 years.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Williams; two sons, Alexander Ralph Williams, Uniontown, Pa., and Russell Jonathan Williams, Baltimore; five daughters, Rose Mary Elizabeth Ruiz, Stafford, Va., Sharon Denise Kowalkoski, Bayard, Lisa Michelle Williams, Elkins, W.Va., Belinda Lynn DeWitt, Keyser, W.Va., and Melinda Ann Smith, Mt. Storm, W.Va.; two sisters, Nellie O'Callaghan, Glen Burnie, and Leatha Gee, Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; several half brothers and sisters; eight stepchildren; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

At. Mr. Williams' request, his body will be cremated.

A gathering to share remembrances with family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Mt. Storm fire hall, Mt. Storm.

JEREMY D. BERNARD

After a valiant battle with leukemia, Jeremy Douglas Bernard, 20, Oakland, went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 31, 2008, while hospitalized at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

Born April 22, 1988, he was a son of Doug and Vickie Bernard, Oakland.

After graduating from Southern High School in 2006, Jeremy began an automotive technology program at Allegany College of Maryland and took classes at Garrett College.

He attended Bethel United Methodist Church. Jeremy loved outdoor activities and farming and enjoyed going to antique car shows and restoring tractors.

In addition to his parents, Jeremy is survived by two sisters, Lisa and Kari, and one brother, Kevin, all at home; maternal grandparents George and Freda Rexroad; paternal grandparents John and Norma Bernard; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

Friends and relatives were received at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland.

A funeral service was held today, Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Bernard residence on Smouse Road, Oakland.

Jeremy's soul is with God – his final resting place will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.

Memorials may be made in Jeremy's name to the Rosenbaum Family House of Ruby Memorial Hospital or the Leukemia Foundation.

MADELENE C. SMITH

Madelene "Billy" Cutchall Smith, died on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in Rockville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cpt. Philip C. Smith Sr.

She was the loving mother of surviving children Janey Byram and fiancé Jeff Gwinn, Philip C. Smith Jr., and Richard B. Smith. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Thomas and Robert Baker, Barbara Vasquez, Christine Byram, and Stacy, Jessica, Lisa, Chuck, Katie, Michelle, Kyle, and Jennifer Smith; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

A service was held today, Thursday, Sept. 4, at Snowden Funeral Home, Rockville.

Interment was private.

FLORENE V. TICHINEL

Florene Virginia (Friend) Tichinel, 87, Kitzmiller, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at her home.

Born May 25, 1921, in Swanton, she was a daughter of the late John B. and Mabel (Chadderton) Friend. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Martin W. Tichinel; and her son, Archie E. Tichinel.

Mrs. Tichinel was a member of Walnut Bottom Assembly of God Church for over 50 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Maria Vicki Fletcher and husband Robert, Kitzmiller; one daughter-in-law, Sherri Tichinel, Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller.

A service was held on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Walnut Bottom Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. George H. Tichinel and Rev. John Friend.

Interment followed in Walnut Bottom cemetery.

WILLIAM A. CALLIS

William Andrew "Andy" Callis, 54, Mtn. Lake Park, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at his home.

Born Aug. 22, 1954, in Oakland, he was a son of the late Willoughby "Bill" McClellan and Marilyn "Mary Jo" Josephine (Posey) Callis. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Albert Callis.

Mr. Callis was head custodian at Dennett Road Elementary School, Oakland. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam.

He is survived by his loving wife, Frances Lee (Alvaro) Callis; two sons, Justin Thomas Callis, North Carolina, and Nicholas Callis, at home; three brothers, Richard Theodore Callis, Virginia Beach, Va., Michael Edward Callis, Wilmington, Calif., and John Lincoln Callis, Front Royal, Va.; two sisters, Lyn (Callis) Cummins and Virginia Patrice "Jenny Pat" (Callis) Tasker, both of Front Royal; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Friends were received at Newman Funeral Home, McHenry/Accident, where a service was conducted on Saturday, Sept. 13, with the Rev. Donald Forrester officiating.

Interment was held in Oakland cemetery, where military graveside rites were accorded by area veterans' service organizations.

DR. JAMES H. FEASTER

Dr. James H. Feaster Jr., 89, Oakland, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at his residence.

Born Aug. 23, 1919, in Keyser, W.Va., he was a son of the late James H. and Hattie (Cross) Feaster.

Reared in Piedmont, W.Va., he attended Piedmont grade and high schools and graduated in June 1937. He attended Potomac State School from 1937 to 1939 and West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va., in 1939 and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in June 1941.

Dr. Feaster attended the University of Maryland Medical School, Baltimore, from 1941 to June 1944, graduating with doctorate degree of medicine. He married Doris Louise Gerwig, Pine Orchard, on Sept. 23, 1944.

He served a rotating internship at Charleston General Hospital, Charleston, W.Va., for nine months and then a rotating residency in surgery for another nine months.

Dr. Feaster entered the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant and spent six weeks at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He was assigned to 130th Station Hospital, Heidelberg, Germany, where he spent 18 months before being discharged from the service as a captain.

He then returned for further training at Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, W.Va., as a resident in surgery, finished training in November 1948 and moved to Oakland to begin a general practice of medicine.

He maintained an office at 58 S. 2nd Street in the Oakland Pharmacy building. He then purchased the old Garrett County National Bank building, renovated the building, and maintained offices there until retirement May 15, 1987. Dr. Feaster served in all positions on the staff of the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, and he also served a number of times on the board of governors at the hospital. He served Garrett County as deputy medical examiner for 28 years until retirement.

Dr. Feaster was a member of the American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, Maryland Medical and Chirugical Faculty, American Academy of Family Physicians, Garrett County Medical Society, and a member of Garrett County Memorial Hospital medical and dental staff (emeritus).

He owned and operated a Christmas tree farm in Crellin. He was also a charter member of the Garrett County Christmas Tree Growers Association and a member of the Maryland and National Christmas Tree growers association.

He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Oakland, and a long-time member of the adult class of Sunday school at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Oakland.

He was elected to the board of directors at Garrett County National Bank on Jan. 12, 1960, and elected chairman of the board on April 16, 1970. He served in this position until retirement from the bank board in January 1990. He was elected president of the bank board on June 1, 1970, and served in this position until March 18, 1976.

Later on various occasions, he assumed this position again and last served until Jan. 13, 1983. He became an honorary director on Jan. 1, 1990, and he retired from the board in March 1991. Garrett County National Bank then merged with Liberty Bank, Cumberland, to become WmBancor Corporation. He served on this board until retirement in 1991.

Dr. Feaster was a member of the Garrett Lodge, K of P #113 for a number of years; 50-year member of Mt. Carbon Lodge #28 AF & AM, Piedmont, W.Va., which is now merged with the Keyser, W.Va., Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Doris G. Feaster, Oakland; one son, James H. Feaster III and wife Kathy, Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Janice L. Hudnall and husband Thomas, Lead Mine, W.Va., and Barbara Ann Fuller and husband Bill, Richmond, Va.; five grandsons, James Feaster and wife Shawna, Ohio, Robert Feaster, Anchorage, David Feaster and wife Christina, South Carolina, Patrick Hudnall and wife Michelle and Michael Hudnall and wife Sabrina, all of Lead Mine; and
two granddaughters, Amie, Winchester, Va., and Megan, Dublin, Ireland; eight great-grandchildren, Ben, Elizabeth, and Emma Feaster, Brandon and Alyssa Feaster, Aidan and Colin Hudnall, and Elaina Hudnall; and one sister, Jeanne Noel, Gaithersburg.

Friends were received at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland.

A service was held at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Oakland, on Monday, Sept. 15, with the Rev. Dr. Chip Lee officiating.

Interment followed in Oakland cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of memorial donations to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Garrett County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Hospice of Garrett County, or Southern Rescue Squad.

FREDDIE W. HOWELL

Freddie Warren Howell, 75, Swanton, died Friday Sept. 12, 2008, at the Oakland Nursing & Rehab Center, Oakland.

Born Sept. 21, 1932, in Swanton, he was a son of the late John and Martha (Brewer) Howell. He was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Deidre Friend DeBerry.

Mr. Howell retired from Westvaco and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Doris (Foy) Howell, Swanton; two daughters, Mary Lynn Friend, Swanton, and Ruth Elaine Hyde, Oakland; two grandchildren, Kelly Buckley and Jesse E. Howell; and two great-grandchildren, Abby Buckley and Holly Buckley.

At Mr. Howell's request, his body was cremated.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 18, at Swanton Otterbein Methodist Church, Swanton, with the Rev. Joyce Anderson officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of memorial donations to the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.

CATHERINE MILLER

Catherine Miller, 93, Oakland, formerly of Goshen, Ind., died at her daughter's home on Friday afternoon, Sept. 12, 2008.

Born in Topeka, Ind., on Nov. 21, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Daniel E. and Magdalena "Maude" (Bontrager) Yoder. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius Miller, on Nov. 27, 1990, whom she married on Nov. 30, 1933, in Topeka; two brothers, John E. and Orva Jay Yoder; and four sisters, Alta Yoder, Ida May Yoder, Ruby Wyse, and Elma Stauffer.

A Goshen resident from 1940 to 2002, Catherine managed the Waterford Community School cafeteria for 19 years and then the Little Eden Camp cafeteria for six years in Onekama, Mich. She was a charter member of Waterford Mennonite Church, Goshen.

She is survived by two daughters, Grace Slaubaugh and husband Marvin, Wellman, Iowa, and Mary Ellen Lichty and husband Ralph, Oakland; two sons, Maurice Glen Miller and wife Susan, Milwaukee, Wis., and John Stanley Miller and wife Rachel, Lawrence, Kan.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Maggie Yoder and husband Gerald, Lucille Blue and husband Ernest, and Mary Bontrager and husband Alvin, all of Goshen.

Friends were received at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Goshen.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Waterford Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Neil Amstutz of Waterford Mennonite Church and the Rev. Steve Sauder of Gortner Union Church, Oakland, officiating.

A graveside service was held at Maple Grove cemetery, Topeka.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Waterford Mennonite Church, Goshen, or Gortner Union Church, Oakland.
