BETTY A. SERENO

Betty Ann Sereno, 80, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at Cortland Acres, Thomas, W.Va.

Born March 24, 1928, in Hannahsville, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Dayton and Dona Shahan Lipscomb. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Irvin Sereno, in June 2005; and two sisters, Florine Phares and Gertrude Howell.

Betty grew up in Erwin, W.Va., and graduated from Rowlesburg High School with the class of 1946. She and her late husband owned and operated Sunny Hill Dairy Farm in the Freeland Settlement of Terra Alta for many years before retirement.

She was a very active community member and was involved in the VFW Auxiliary #578, Ladies of the Moose, TABC, Preston County Senior Citizens, 4-H, Girl Scouts of America, Youghiogheny Glades Chapter #2-049, DAR, and Freeland WSCS, and volunteered at local nursing homes.

She was a member of the Freeland United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn "Annie" Steyer and husband Larry, Oakland, and Janet Wood and husband Glen, Vero Beach, Fla.; three brothers, W. Blaine Lipscomb, Bruceton Mills, W.Va., George A. Lipscomb and wife Nila, Rowlesburg, and Kenneth C. Lipscomb and wife Judy, Anchorage, Alaska; sisters-in-law Marion Cordova and husband Harold, Elaine Roberts and husband Joe, all of Melbourne, Fla., and Martha Sereno, Terra Alta; one brother-in-law, Eugene Sereno and wife Sue, Lynchburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Amy Samek and husband Martin, Winston-Salem, N.C., Chelle Barrett and husband Chris, Annapolis, Vanessa and Joan Font Vela, Mongat, Spain, and Justin Hunter Steyer, Oakland; six great-grandchildren, Dylan, Ashton, Zoe, Cameron, Ivy, and Eden; two special nephews, Robert Lipscomb, South Amherst, Ohio, and William Lipscomb, Elizabeth City, N.C.; and an additional 48 nieces and nephews.

Friends were received at Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, where a service was conducted on Tuesday, Sept. 16, with Pastor Timothy J. Kelley and great-nephew Brad Friend officiating.

Interment followed at West Virginia National cemetery, Grafton, W.Va.

REV. JOHN D. CHAMBLIN

Rev. John Drummond Chamblin, 81, Seaford, Del., died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008.

Rev. Chamblin was born April 15, 1927, in Herndon, Va., to Ralph VanSickler Chamblin and Virginia Melson Chamblin. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea. A 1961 graduate of the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Kentucky, he was ordained deacon at St. Paul’s Church, Norfolk, Va., in 1961, and priest in February of 1962 by Bishop William A. Brown at Trinity Church in Portsmouth, Va.

In the Diocese of Southern Virginia he served Trinity Church as deacon, Church of the Good Shepherd, Norfolk, as assistant rector, and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, as its second rector.

He began his ministry in the Diocese of Washington in 1972, where he served as rector of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Silver Spring, until he retired in 1990. He was a continuing education fellow at the Virginia Theological Seminary, secretary of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Washington, and chair of the Commission on Ministry under Bishop John T. Walker.

Upon his retirement, he formed the winter congregation of St. Simons-by-the-Sea at Sandbridge Beach, Va., where he served as vicar until 1994. In recent years, he served as midweek celebrant at St. Phillip’s, Laurel, Del.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, Anne Bivins Chamblin, formerly of Newport News, Va., he is survived by their children, Virginia Chamblin Grochowski and husband John, Rocky Mount, N.C., John Drummond Chamblin Jr and wife Marcia, Manassas, Va., Rev. Anne S.C. Byrne and husband William, Oakland, and Randolph Melson Chamblin and wife Erika, Sterling, Va.; six grandchildren; his brother, Ralph VanSickler Chamblin, Albuquerque, N.M.; and his sister, Ann Chamblin Izlar, Durham, N.C.

A memorial service was held at St. Mary’s Church, Bridgeville, Del., on Wednesday, Sept 17.

JEFFREY P. BEITZEL

Jeffrey Paul Beitzel died on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at City of Hope Hospital, Duarte, Calif., following a bout of leukemia.

Born July 21, 1954, in Massillon, Ohio, he was a son of Eileen M. Beitzel, Oakland, and the late Paul N. Beitzel. He was also preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents.

He graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., in 1976. He then relocated to Detroit, Mich., where he established a career in the automotive industry.

He founded Wheel to Wheel Automotive and recently established Quantum Tech as he branched out nationwide. He spent the last several years living between Detroit and Los Angeles, Calif., pursuing a variety of business opportunities.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by three children, Jennifer, Jill, and Jake Beitzel, Livonia, Mich.; and two sisters, Judy Fike, Oakland, and Janice Grigg, Detroit.

Friends will be received on Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Harry J. Will Funeral Home, Livonia.

A service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Livonia. A luncheon will follow at the Northville Hills Country Club until 4:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 9026, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

ALVERTA W. BOWSER

Alverta Wilma Bowser, 87, Grantsville, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.

Born March 24, 1921, in Somerset County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Florence (Wright) Ringer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Russell Bowser, on July 31, 2006.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Maple Grove Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by one son, Ronald R. Bowser, Grantsville.

Friends will be received today, Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 19, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Owen Guengerich officiating.

Interment will be in Grantsville cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Hospice of Garrett County.

MARY E. HAUSER

Mary Elda Hauser, 92, Oakland, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.

Born Jan. 7, 1916, in Horse Shoe Run, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Cleve and Ina Mae (Wotring) Evans. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Guy William Hauser.

She is survived by her daughter, Almeda Lipscomb and husband Gerald, Horse Shoe Run; three grandchildren, Denise Reese and husband Steve and Carol Wilson and husband D.J., all of Oakland, and Sandra Gibson and husband Steve, Clarksburg, W.Va.; four great-grandchildren, Sheena and Brad Reese and Peyton and Kierra Wilson; one sister, Lena Mullenax, Horse Shoe Run; and three brothers, Brownie Evans and Grover Evans, both of Elkins, W.Va., and Orval "Stub" Evans, Horse Shoe Run.

Friends were received at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland.

A service was conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Interment followed in St. John’s Lutheran cemetery, Red House.

BLONDELL M. SISLER

Blondell M. Sisler, 89, Aurora, W.Va., died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at Cortland Acres, Thomas, W.Va.

Born March 20, 1919, in Kingwood, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Henry and Ethel Herndon Wolfe. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest L. Sisler, in 1978; one daughter, Mary Catherine Sisler; one grandson; three brothers; and one sister.

She was a member of Amboy United Methodist Church. She retired from the Terra Alta Garment Factory. She was a member of the Amboy Sewing Club for many years.

She is survived by two sons, Ernest S. Sisler, Terra Alta, W.Va., and William "Bink" Sisler, Aurora; two daughters, Patricia S. Myers, Fairmont, W.Va., and Carolyn S. Ball, Aurora; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at Amboy United Methodist Fellowship Hall, where a service was conducted today, Thursday, Sept. 18, with the Rev. Shelba J. Sisler officiating.

Interment followed in Terra Alta cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Ernest Lee Sisler to the American Cancer Society, 300 Scott Avenue, Morgantown, WV 26508.

PAULINE S. EWING

Pauline S. Ewing, 84, Rockville, passed away on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda.

She was the beloved wife of the late James Ewing; loving mother of James Ewing and wife Clarice and Bill Ewing and wife Tammy; and loving sister of Mary Schied and husband Robert and Michael Shaute. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan and wife Emily, Patrick, Jillian, and Tyler; one cousin, Janet Shaute; and other loving family and friends.

Friends will be received at Pumphrey Colonial Funeral Home, 300 West Montgomery Avenue, Rockville, (Rt. 28 just off I-270, exit 6-A) on Friday, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rockville, on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m.

Entombment will be held at Gate of Heaven cemetery Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, 5845 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22203.

BEULAH V. REXROADE

Beulah Viola (Metz) Rexroade, 94, Frostburg, formerly of New Germany, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home.

Born July 11, 1914, in Jennings, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Cora Belle (Sweitzer) Metz.

She was also preceded in death by her three husbands, Henry Wiland, George McGhee, and Thomas Rexroade; one son, Harry Wiland; one stepson, Robert Rexroade; one daughter, Ruth Jacobs; two children in infancy, Marshall Wiland and Sheridan David Wiland; three sisters, Annabelle McCollum, Dorothy Metz, and Bertha Metz; seven brothers, Roy, James, Bill, Robert, Lester, Blake, and Donald Metz; one grandson; one great-grandchild; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She retired in 1971 from Westinghouse, where she had been an electrical spot welder.

She was a member of the Jessup Baptist Church and attended the Brethren Church in Rawlings. She was a former member of the Cresaptown Senior Citizens and AARP.

She is survived by three sons, Charles Wiland, Grantsville, Willard Wiland, Baltimore, and Wendell Wiland, Frostburg; five daughters, Jeanne Kimery, Brooklyn Park, Karen W. Sines, Frostburg, Juanita M. Saville, Cresaptown, Wanda M. Garlitz, Sheffield Lake, Ohio, and Sandra M. Gardner, Middleburg, Ohio; seven sisters, Novella Femi, Cresaptown, Vianna Brown, Cumberland, Helen Klingebiel, Cumberland, Mary A. Wagner, Rawlings, Marlene Crowe, Hiller, Pa., Edna Gossett, Seattle, Wash., and Ruth Maciolek, Trenton, N.J.; 39 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at Hafer Funeral Service, LaVale, where a service was conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 17, with the Rev. Ken Korns officiating.

Interment was held in Mt. Beulah Methodist Church cemetery, New Germany.

ELIZABETH M. WINIGER

Elizabeth Malone Wininger, Oakland, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was a daughter of the late Jannes and Millie Shanabarger Nestor. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Malone Jr., in 1985; three sisters, Evna Nestor, Odie Chapman, and Mary Eleanor Nestor; and two brothers, Jannes Nestor Jr. and Lotus M. Nestor.

Elizabeth was an employee of Peoples Insurance and Monumental Insurance as well as having owned and operated the Mansfield Grocery in Philippi, W.Va., with her first husband Ralph.

She attended school in Barbour and Monongalia counties and was a member of the Blueville Church of the Nazarene for 15 years before moving to Oakland, where she belonged to the Oakland Church of the Nazarene.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband, William Wininger Sr., Oakland; two sons, Daniel R. Malone and Timothy W. Malone; five stepchildren, William Wininger Jr., Michael Wininger, Steve Wininger, Melissa Taylor, and John Wininger; four grandchildren, Ryan, Monica, Brandon, and Christian Malone; 12 step-grandchildren, Zackary, Joshua, Matthew, Chelsea, John Jr., Rebecca, Amanda, and Lacy Wininger, and Leah, Rachel, Sarah, and Tommie Taylor; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Waldo Nestor and wife Ruth, Coburn, Va., and Andrew Nestor and wife Jan, Parkersburg, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday evening at Bartlett Funeral Home, Grafton, W.Va., where a service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, with Pastor Art Evans officiating.

Entombment will follow in Grandview cemetery, Fairmont, W.Va.

JUNE I. THOMAS

June Ilean Thomas, 79, Oakland, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born April 5, 1929, in Turner Douglas, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Alvey and Bertha (Liston) Reckart. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Alvie E. Thomas, in 1990; an infant daughter, Penny Lorraine Thomas; eight sisters; and two brothers.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by four sons, Roger Thomas, Swallow Falls, Willis and Harry Thomas, both of Oakland, and Lucas Thomas, Horse Shoe Run, W.Va.; three daughters, Shirley Slaubaugh, Bayard, W.Va., and Nancy Hinebaugh and Rachel Hebb, both of Oakland; 16 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at Newman Funeral Home, Oakland.

A service was conducted at Fairview Church of the Brethren on Friday, Jan. 2, with the Rev. David C. Moon officiating.

Interment was held in Underwood cemetery.

WILLIAM L. GAY

William Lloyd Gay, 68, Henderson, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at his home.

He was a construction worker.

He was preceded in death by one son, William Lloyd Gay Jr.; his parents, John William and Mary Elizabeth Conaway Gay; and one sister, Melva (Gay) Steyer Cator.

He is survived by two daughters, Jeri Givens, Little Dixie, and Louise Shiflett, Oakland; three sons, Lloyd William Gay Davis, Henderson, Robert L. Gay, Little Dixie, and Paul E. Gay, Evansville, Ind.; two brothers, Joseph Gay, Bayard, W.Va., and Roy Edward Gay, Enterprise, W.Va.; one sister, Nancy L. Gay, Accident; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Interment was held on Friday, Jan. 2, in Bayard cemetery, Bayard.

Interment arrangements were made by Newman Funeral Home, Oakland.
