MARSHALL L. MONTGOMERY

Marshall Leon Montgomery, 68, Mt. Storm, W.Va., died Thursday, April 30, 2009.

Born Aug. 3, 1940, in Deer Park, he was a son of the late Isabelle Montgomery Grayson.

He was a 1959 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired after 27½ years with Consol Laurel Run Mining Company as a mechanic and dispatcher.

After his retirement, he worked part time at the Petersburg Social Security Office, and for Homeland Security as a security officer. He was a member of the Locust Grove Church of the Brethren and the Locust Grove men’s Bible study group.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Naomi (Whisner) Montgomery; one son, Leon Marshall Montgomery, Chapel Hill, N.C.; one daughter, Marsha Noel Montgomery Lyles, Billings, Mont.; one brother, Terry Grayson, Winter Park, Fla.; one sister, Aleta Fagan, Cumberland; and four grandchildren.

Friends were received at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, Mt. Storm, where a memorial service was held on Monday, May 4, with the Rev. John Walker officiating.

David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland, was in charge of arrangements.

CLIFFORD R. HUMBERSON

Clifford Ray Humberson, 90, McHenry, died Nov. 29, 2008, in Oak Manor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Largo, Fla.

Born March 15, 1918, in Friendsville, he was a son of the late William Talbert and Naomi Margaret (Frazee) Humberson. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mae (Evans) Humberson; two brothers, William "Bud" and John Wade Humberson; one sister, "Sis" Humberson; and one stepson, Kenneth Lee Penrod.

Mr. Humberson was a dispatcher for the U.S. Railroad for 30 years and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII.

He is survived by his wife, Rita M. (Timmons) Humberson; one daughter, Marian Humberson; one stepson, Jack Penrod; one stepdaughter, Susan Penrod; one brother, Robert Humberson and wife Betty; two sisters, Nell West and "Peg" Lipniskis; four grandchildren, Michele, Adam, Amanda, and Brian; and two great-grandchildren, Jersey and Jordan.

A graveside service will be conducted in Humberson cemetery on Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Nevin Umbel officiating.

Local arrangements were handled by Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville.

ALICE J. CHAPMAN

Alice J. Chapman, 68, Oakland, died on Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born Jan. 26, 1941, in Oakland, she was a daughter of the late Walter Simmons and the late Daisy (Blizzard) Simmons. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Blondell Chapman.

Mrs. Chapman was a homemaker.

She is survived by six sons, Donald and wife Betty Chapman, Mickey and wife Patty Chapman, Randy and wife Deb Chapman, Terry and wife Annette Chapman, Keith Chapman, and Tim and wife Julie Chapman, all of Oakland; one daughter, Jannie Chapman, Oakland; two brothers, Marshall Simmons, Courtland, Ohio, and Wilmer "Butch" Simmons, Oakland; one sister, Nancy Gordon, Kitzmiller; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted on Wednesday, May 6, with the Rev. David Moon officiating.

At Mrs. Chapman’s request, she was cremated. Her ashes will be buried at a later date.

WINONA R. ALEXANDER

Winona "Nonie" Ruth Alexander, 72, Mtn. Lake Park, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Mon General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

Born July 22, 1936, in Turner Douglas, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late George W. Alexander and Grace L. (Bowser) (Alexander) Martin. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Russell B. Alexander; and two sisters, Mary L. Rose and Freda V. Stout.

Nonie retired from the town of Oakland. She had also worked previously at Englander’s, worked as a governess for the John Luke family, and as a headmistress at Harvey’s School For Boys in New York.

She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Oakland. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad Auxiliary.

She is survived by three brothers, Dayton E. Alexander and wife Dorothy, Aurora, W.Va., Robert B. Alexander, Hagerstown, and Howard G. Alexander and wife Barbara, Smithsburg; four sisters, Gladys G. Flesher and husband Bill, Grafton, W.Va., Norma J. Gallagher, Morgantown, F. Juanita Shaffer and husband Adrian, Mtn. Lake Park, Charlotte M. Boggs and husband Herb, Smithsburg; several nieces and nephews; and two special great-nephews, Troy and Wyatt Deckman, whom she loved very much.

Friends were received at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland.

A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted on Wednesday, May 6, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Oakland, with the Rev. Fr. Martin Feild as celebrant.

Interment followed in Garrett Memorial Gardens, Oakland.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of memorial donations to the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550.

CHARLES B. LOVE

Charles Bruce "Huck" Love, 62, Estelline, S.D., died on Saturday, May 2, 2009.

Born Dec. 4, 1946, in Oakland, he was a son of the late James and Pearl (Whitacre) Love. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Jordan Gollin.

He is survived by his wife, Cleda (Welch) Love, Estelline; five daughters, Amy Love, North Miami Shores, Fla., Katheryn Love of Onalaska, Texas, Kelly Rea and husband Michael, Lincoln, Neb., Kerry Kothe and husband Ray, Volga, S.D., and Kami Alyn Love, at home; two sons, Charles Love Jr., Bluffington, S.C., and Michael Albert and wife Linda, Spaulding, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Mildred Minnick, Deer Park; and one brother, James Love, Pensacola, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Maryland.

FREDDIE R. BRANT

Freddie R. Brant, Clayton, Del., passed away peacefully Saturday, April 25, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover, Del. He was 67.

Freddie was born at Deep Creek Lake on May 28, 1941, to the late Gerald and Beulah B. (O'Brien) Brant.

Fred was a retired steel worker from Forbes Steel and Wire Corp., Wilmington, Del., where he worked for almost 40 years. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.

An avid hunter and proud card member of the NRA, he loved the outdoors and enjoyed feeding and watching his hummingbirds.

A devoted family man, Fred took great pleasure in spending time with his family and friends playing cards and drinking coffee. A deck of Phase Ten cards and Word Find were always close by.

The Church of the Nazarene, where he cut grass and helped out any way he could, was an important part of his life.

He will be truly missed by all.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Bobby Brant.

Freddie is survived by his wife, Patricia Brant, who was always by his side for 46 years; daughter Sharon Reider and husband John and their two sons, C.J. and Eric, Townsend, Del.; son Brian and wife Jenny, and their two daughters, Samantha and Danielle, Newark, Del.; daughter Angie Brant and her daughter, Sarah McMillan, Clayton; one brother, George E. Brant and wife Jeanie, Orrville, Ohio; and three sisters, Joyce A. Parker, Hockessin, Del., Doris Brant, Williamsburg, Va., and Sandra Corbin and husband Bill, Oakland.

Friends were received at Faries Funeral Chapel, Smyrna, Del., where a service was conducted on Thursday, April 30.

Burial was held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Faith Church of the Nazarene, 1010 Duck Creek Road, Smyrna, DE 19977.

HUMBIRD L. JOHNSON

Humbird Lynn Johnson, 61, died recently at his residence in Salisbury.

Born Oct. 23, 1947, in Cumberland, he was a son of the late William Howard and Helen Offutt Johnson.

He was a graduate of Severn School in Severna Park, where he lettered in lacrosse and football. He attended the University of Maryland College Park until he entered active duty with the U.S. Army. He served with the Military Police in Augsburg, Germany, where he obtained the rank of staff sergeant. Other MP assignments included West Point at the U.S. Military Academy, New York, and Ft. George G. Meade.

In civilian life, he worked in retail sales and store management. He managed Hacks Camera Shop in downtown Annapolis and was a skilled, free-lance photographer. Some of his clients included the U.S. Sail Boat and Power Boat shows in Annapolis, the Marine Trade Industry, and the Maryland State House Photo Department. For a time, he also worked in the marine trade industry at Whitehall Yacht Yard, Annapolis.

While raising his children in Easton, he was active in Scouting programs. His hobbies included model railroading, bicycle riding, and golf. He frequently played golf on numerous courses in Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, and Garrett counties.

Mr. Johnson was held in high regard by his fellow merchants, customers and friends. He is remembered for his cordiality and his eagerness to help satisfy customer needs.

He is survived by one brother, Offutt Johnson and wife Joan, Oakland; three sons, Drew Johnson, Kansas City, Kan., Billy Johnson and wife Heather, High Pointe, N.C., and Jeffrey Johnson, Ft. Worth, Texas; one niece, Jennifer Lynn Johnson Martin and husband Larry, League City, Texas; one great-nephew, Joshua Martin, League City; and one great-niece, Bethany Martin, League City; and numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Friends will be received at David A. Burdock Oakland, where visitation and a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. T. Patrick Kerr officiating.

Interment of ashes will follow in the Oakland cemetery.

In lieu of lowers, it is requested that memorial contributions be made to the Lynn Johnson Memorial Fund in care of Pat Warren, Manager and Pro, Oakland Golf Club, P.O. Box 32, Oakland, MD 21550.
