November 1, 2000

Jake D. Lee, 11 years of age, of Sudlersville, Maryland died on November 1, 2000 at Anne Arrundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Maryland.

Born on May 10th, 1989, he was the son of Carl and Donna Lee. He has been a life long resident of Sudlersville, MD. Jake has been a student at the Benedictine School in Ridgley, MD for the past 3 years. Jake was very family orientated; he loved being with his mother, father, and brother. He particularly loved his Granny Annie. Jake love activities such as swimming, playing slinky, and doing "Theme Projects." "To know Jake, is to know unconditional Love".

Jake is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Joseph K. (January of 2000) and Elenette V. Beazley who died in August of 1996. Jake is survived by his parents, Carl and Donna Lee and his brother Kyle S. Register, of Sudlersville, MD, his parental grandparents, Jack M. and Anna Lee of Shrewsbury, PA. his Uncle and Aunt, Charles and Susan Christopher and his three cousins, John Cook, Karl and Clayton Christopher, all of Woodbridge, VA.

Memorial Services will be held on Monday, November 6th at 2 P.M. from the Chestertown Baptist Church in Chestertown, Maryland. Friends and Family may call 2 hours prior to church services. Officiating will be Pastor Mel Brindley. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Eleanor Clark Towers of Trappe died on Wednesday, November 1, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 65.

Born in Easton on January 21, 1935, she was the daughter of the late William Wallace and Mary Hammond Clark. She was a resident of Easton all her life until moving to Trappe nine years ago. In 1950 at the First Annual Delmarva Chicken Festival, she was awarded first place in the Junior Division cooking contest. For 25 years, she drove a school bus until retiring in 1992. Mrs. Towers was a member of the Easton Church of the Brethren, and of the Women of the Moose, Harrington, DE, Lodge #534.

Mrs. Towers is survived by a companion, James E. Davis of Trappe; a daughter, Deborah L. Towers of Hurlock: two sons, Kenneth L. Towers of Preston and Keith N. Towers of Easton; a brother, W. Franklin Clark of Trappe; five grandchildren, David Tyler, Jr., Timothy Anderson, Jr., Samantha Towers, Martina Elizabeth Towers, and Melissa Rose Towers; and a great-grandson, Ian Tyler.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Sunday, November 5, 2000 at 2:00 PM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 3-5:00 PM. Burial will be at Fairview cemetery, Cordova.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601 or the Moose Lodge 534, c/o Women of the Moose, P.O. December 31, 2000

Helen Arsenault of Chester died on December 31, 2000 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home, Centreville. She was 84.

Born on September 17, 1916 in Joliet, IL, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Sava Trkulja Radakovich. She graduated from Joliet High School in the class of 1938, then attended Joliet Junior College. She married Louis Arsenault on June 4, 1960, and he predeceased her on August 6, 1988. Mrs. Arsenault worked as an accountant at various locations to accommodate her husband’s career moves.

She was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, Chester, as well as the Outreach Program at the church. She was also a member of the Kent Island American Legion Post 278 Ladies Auxillary. She received awards for her hospital charity work while living in Florida. Everyone will remember her for her baking.

She is survived by one son, Eli Dabich of Chester, MD, a sister, Mary Padley of Joliet, IL, two brothers, Robert Radakovich of Joliet, IL and Louis Radakovich of Hagerstown, MD, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2001 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, Chester at 11:00 AM. Family and friends may call at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Chester on Friday, January 5 from 7:00 PM till 9:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association 212 W. Main St. Suite 202C Salisbury, MD 21801 or the American Heart Association C/O Sheila Bateman 501 Dutchman’s Lane Easton, MD 21601.

Jack W. Peddicord of Chester died on Sunday, December 31, 2000 of pancreatic cancer at his home. He was 69.

Born on October 29, 1931 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Elmer and Ella Loeshke Peddicord. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic High School in the class of 1950, and then attended the University of Maryland where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1957. On October 1, 1962, he went to work for National Aeronautical Space Administration (N.A.S.A.), in the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. He retired as a project manager in January 1993.

On September 17, 1955, he married Patricia Squires of Chevy Chase, MD. Mr Peddicord was a member of the Kent Island Yacht Club and Island Idlers of Kent Island. His interests included history, science, geneology, travel and gardening.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, J. Randy Peddicord and his wife Liz of Elkridge, MD and Kevin E. Peddicord and his wife Nanette of Raleigh, NC, one daughter, Melissa P. McCarthy and her husband Thomas of Stevensville, MD, one sister, Dorothy Stehli of Winter Park, FL, seven grandchildren, Scott and Caroline Peddicord of Elkridge, MD, Ian and Dane Peddicord of Raleigh, NC and Kate, Cee Cee, and Meghan McCarthy of Stevensville, MD. A brother, Elmer F. Peddicord died in 1987.

Services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2001 at 11:00 AM at the Living Water Lutheran Church, Stevensville. Family and Friends may call at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Chester, MD on Thursday January 4 from 7 till 9. Burial will be private.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Avenue Queenstown, Maryland 21658.

December 30, 2000

Martha Ann Biddle of Chestertown, Md. died at her home on December 30, 2000. She was 68.

Born July 2, 1932, she was the daughter of the late James Earl and Lola Carter Smith. Mrs. Biddle graduated from Sudlersville High School in 1949. She worked at Kent and Queen Anne's Petroleum, Granger and Faw C.P.A.'s, Kent County Health Dept. and retired from the Kent County Register of Wills office as Chief Deputy in 1994.

Mrs. Biddle was active in Sports, having managed a winning girl's softball team, played on a Basketball team, and enjoyed league bowling for many years. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Chestertown, Md.

Mrs. Biddle is survived by her husband of 43 years, William A. "Pat" Biddle of Chestertown, Md.; a son and daughter-in-law: Glen and Barbara Biddle, 3 grandchildren: Gabriela, Claudia, and Nathan Biddle all of Easton, Md. She is also survived by 6 sisters: Virginia Gill and Sue Hadaway of Annapolis, Md., Doris Plummer and Pearl Plummer both of Chestertown, Md., Mary Helen Bowers and Elevian Burris of Worton, Md., along with 3 brothers: James Earl Smith Jr. of Rock Hall, Md., Charles E. Smith of Chestertown, Md., and William T. Smith of North Carolina. One brother the late Carter Smith predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 3, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. where relatives and friends may call on Tuesday January 2, 2001 between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 P.M. Interment will be in Chester cemetery.In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Charity of your choice.

Pallbearers for Ann will be: Henry F. Dagenais, Francis H. Plummer, Frank A. Plummer, Landis Plummer, Ralph Plummer Jr., James A. Gill, and Ronald Lee Plummer.

May Shannahan Cecil, of Easton, passed away in Easton on Saturday, December 30, 2000.

Born at Llandaff, near Easton, January 29, 1914, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Kate Elliott Shannahan. She was a graduate of the Shipley School in Philadelphia. A long-time resident of Easton, she was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Easton. In Sept of 1939, she married Dr. Arthur Bond Cecil, Jr. and they lived in Easton where he passed away in May of 1993.

She loved animals and nature. In 1979, she took a writing course at Chesapeake College and began writing poetry, most of which was about life at Llandaff and her beloved animals.

Mrs. Cecil is survived by a son, Arthur B. Cecil, III of Baltimore, MD; a daughter, Kitty Cecil Calavita of San Diego. CA and five grandchildren, Joseph Alexander Calavita, Marco Piernicola Calavita, Kristin Cecil Teeters, Karen Cecil Sauers and Nancy Elliott Cecil. A brother, William E. Shannahan, died in 1966 and a sister, Jane S. Offutt, died in November of 2000.

Private family services will be held at the graveside at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton. Memorial donations may be made to the First Church of Christ, Scientist, P.O. Box 1717, Easton, MD or to the Talbot Humane Society, P.O. Box 1143, Easton, MD 21601.

December 29, 2000

Robert Richard Berdan of Easton, died at the Memorial Hospital on Friday December 29, 2000 from injuries he received in a motor vehicle-pedestrian accident. He was 19.

He was born in Colorado Springs Colorado May 19, 1981. At an early age he moved to the Kent Island area of Queen Anne's County where he attended public school. In 1998, he and his family moved to Easton where he graduated from Easton High School in June of 2000. At the time of his death, he worked as a painter for In-town Restorations of St. Michaels and as a part-time clerk for Movie-King in Easton. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol of Easton.

Robert is survived by his mother; Patricia A. Woodson and his step-father Ray Woodson of Easton; maternal grandparents; Fred and Audrey Newvine of Waterbury, Conn., paternal grandmother; Bella Berdan of Prospect, Conn., three brothers, Latharia Reid, Brice Reid, and Jerrad Reid all of Easton.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at the Queen Esther A.M.E. Church, Ivytown, Easton, at 10:00 A.M. where friends may call from 9-10. Burial will be at the Landing Neck cemetery, Trappe.

Memorial donations may be made to the Queen Esther A.M.E. Church Memorial Fund 5272 Manadier Road, Easton, MD. 21601.

Thelma M. Bryan, of Trappe, died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Friday, December 29, 2000. She was 83.

Born at Landing Neck, near Trappe, May 3, 1917, she was the daughter of the late William Shreve and Sara Mae Stevens Marvel. After graduating from Trappe High School , she married James A. Bryan in August of 1934. She and her husband owned and operated the Whispering Pines Liquors and Wines near Trappe for more than thirty years.

A lifelong resident of Talbot County, she was a life member of the Trappe Vol. Fire Co. An avid Bingo player, she attended bingo games at the Easton Fire House, the Easton Moose Lodge, as well as games in Denton, Federalsburg, Betterton and Church Creek. She also played at the Trappe Fire House when she was not calling the games there. She loved her great-grandchildren, going out to dinner and was a regular weekly customer at Betty's Beauty Salon in Cambridge for over 50 years.

Mrs. Bryan's husband died in Feb. of 1977 and her daughter, Shirley M. Spence, died in May of 1978. She was also pre-deceased by a brother, Edward C. Marvel Mrs. Bryan is survived by a granddaughter, Sharon S. Christopher and her husband, Buddy, of Trappe; a brother, W. Granville Marvel of Easton and three great-grandchildren, Buddy III, Corbin and Destiny Christopher. Other survivors include her aunt, Harriet Brooks of Easton with whom she enjoyed spending much of her time, a niece, Nancy Bradley of Trappe and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral home, Easton, on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001 at 2 P.M. The Rev. Alfred E. Taylor, minister of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Cambridge, will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to service. Burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton, with William T. Jones, Edward M. Jones, Howard W. Christopher, Sidney S. Campen, Jr., John O. Brooks, Jr. and George L. Carroll, Jr., serving as pallbearers.

Memorial donations may be made to the Trappe Vol. Fire Company, Trappe, MD 21673.

Sara Frances Peterson of Chestertown, Md. died at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital on December 29, 2000. She was 67.

Born in Crumpton, Md. on January 24, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Cora Teat Reed. On May 14, 1949 she married Daniel Webster Peterson, they lived in Chestertown, Maryland. Mrs. Peterson worked as a janitorial contractor for 27 years for C & P Telephone and later worked for the Goodall Family. Mrs. Peterson enjoyed crafts, crocheting, and making Christmas Wreaths.

In addition to her husband of 51 years, she is survived by a son Chris Peterson of Chestertown, Md., brothers, sisters, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday January 5, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service (10-11). Interment will be in Chester cemetery in Chestertown, Md.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Kent and Queen Anne's Rescue Squad P.O. Box 126 Chestertown, MD. 21620.

Mary Virginia Rada of Grasonville, MD. died Friday December 29, 2000 at the Memorial hospital in Easton, MD. She was 72.

Born on January 26, 1928 in Caroline County. She was the daughter of the late Ida Josephine Thomas (whom died when Ms. Rada was very young) She was raised in Caroline County by her three aunts Myrtle Rice, Mary Annie Taylor & Beulah Connelly. She attended school in Caroline County. Married Henry Andrew Rada in 1945 he predeceased her in 1996.

Mrs. Rada worked for Circle Restaurant in Chester, MD. as a waitress and later worked as a bookkeeper for her husbands business Magnolia Construction. She later took accounting classes at Chesapeake College and began working for Con Agra in Queenstown, MD. as a bookkeeper. She retired after 20 years.

She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Grasonville, MD. Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post #7464, Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Unit # 296 in Queenstown, MD. and Women of the Moose Bay Country Moose Chapter 1696.

She is survived by a daughter Barbara Ringgold of Denton, MD. two Sons C. Robin Rada of Jefferson City, TN. and Ronald E. Rada of Ocean City, MD. nine (9) grandchildren and five (5) great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on 11am on Wednesday January 3, 2001 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD. Interment will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery Eastern Shore near Hurlock, MD. Family & friends may call on Tuesday January 2, 2001 at the funeral home form 7PM to 9PM.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to VFW Post #7464 P.O. Box 175 VFW Ave Grasonville, MD. 21658 or American Lung Assoc. of Maryland 207 E. Market Street Salisbury, MD. 21801.
