Irene H. Bello

Irene H. Bello, 85, of Hagerstown, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at ManorCare Health Services in Chambersburg, Pa.

Born, July 7, 1921, in Rome, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John Clayton and Lillian Irene Westcott Johnson. Her husband, Joseph Michael Bello, died in 1977. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church, Hagerstown. She is survived by two daughters, Marie J. Meininger of Fayetteville, Pa., and Flossie C. Petracca of Rome; two sons, Joseph M. Bello Jr. and John R. Bello, both of Rochester, N.Y.; one sister, Edith McNamara of Rome; one brother, Erwin C. Johnson of Rome; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Florence D. Cole, Jessie C. Carey and Mary Jansen; and two brothers, Raymond Johnson and Everett Johnson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Hagerstown. The Rev. Kevin A. Mueller will be celebrant. Burial will follow in Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to REACH Caregivers, 140 Franklin St., Hagerstown, MD 21740; or to Saint Mary Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Leon Filip

Leon Filip, 95, of Boonsboro, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at 750 Dual Highway, Hagerstown.

Born Jan. 6, 1911, in Adancata, Romania, he was the son of the late Ioan and Ileana Carcu Filip. He was preceded in death by his wife, Domnica Daniliuc Filip. While in Romania, he was a farmer and a minister in the Romanian Pentecostal Church. He was a member of Maranatha Romanian Pentecostal Church in Hagerstown. He is survived by six children, Maria Filip of Dearborn Heights, Mich., Ilie Filip of Romania, Ioan Filip of Boonsboro, Constantin Filip of Hickory, N.C., Elena Enciu of Boonsboro and Lidia Filip of Atlanta; 33 grandchildren; and 85 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

Services will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown. The Rev. Iosif Franc will officiate. Burial will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at Rest Haven cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Maranatha Romanian Pentecostal Church, 10809 Lynn St., Williamsport, MD 21795.

Michael F. Bonefas

Michael F. Bonefas, 88, passed away peacefully at Homewood, on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006.

He was born July 10, 1918, in Bitburg, Germany, and was the son of the late Gregor and Luise Engleman Bonefas. He brought his family to the United States in 1953 and settled in Hagerstown, Md., where he worked for many years as a stone mason. He was proud of his craft and the house and fireplaces he had built. For 15 years, he taught masonry at the Maryland Correctional Facility in Hagerstown, retiring in 1983. He received his degree in education from the University of Maryland, and created programmed instruction courses for his masonry students, allowing them to learn and progress at their own pace. His students learned a useful trade, enabling many to turn their lives around after their release. Michael was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a past member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thilde "Tillie" H. Bonefas; three infant sons; and his sister, Margaret Schnerring. Michael is survived by his daughter, Inge Zamora and her husband, Jerry, of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Petra Stambaugh and her husband, Bob, of Hagerstown; son, Rudy Bonefas and his wife, Sally, of Baltimore, Md.; and his four grandsons, Michael Stambaugh of Hagerstown, who shares his birthday with his "OPA, " Matthew Vendito of Baltimore, Manuel Zamora of Fresno, Calif., and Samuel Zamora of Denver, Colo.; his brothers and sisters in Germany, August Bonefas and his wife, Hilde, Gunther Bonefas, Regina Bonefas and Marlise Duntzer and her husband, Hans; and five nieces, three nephews and sisters-in-law, Maria Wolters, Inge Robins and Annelise Wolters.

Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Christopher Moore officiating. A reception will follow in Riggie Hall at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 17630 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown. Burial will be private. Friends will be received Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home In lieu of flowers, Michael's family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in his memory.

Almeda M. Jordan

Almeda "Meda" Jordan, 71, formerly of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at Reeders Memorial Home in Boonsboro.

Born April 18, 1935, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Adelaide Hewett Kunkleman. She was preceded in death by one son, Terry Lynn Jordan, in 1980. She was a Christian. She attended Hagerstown High School. She last worked as a certified nursing assistant at Colton Manor Nursing Home in Hagerstown. She is survived by one daughter, Michelle Y. Krieg of Wasilla, Alaska; three sons, Gary P. Jordan Jr. of Cearfoss, Michael L. Jordan of Hagerstown, and Timothy L. Jordan of Florence, Colo.; three sisters, Alice Y. Flook, Sandra Johnson and Kay Kirk, all of Hagerstown; two brothers, Paul Kunkleman and Charles Kunkleman, both of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown. The Rev. Loyal Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will follow in Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Reeders Memorial Home, 141 S. Wanda M. Itnyre

Wanda Marguarite Cassidy Itnyre, 84, of Hagerstown, passed away at her home Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, in the company of family.

She was born July 2, 1922, in Mount Savage, Md., and was the daughter of the late Chauncey Andrew and Margaret Evelyn Dickel Cassidy Reger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross L. Itnyre, in 2004 after 64 years and nine months of marriage. She was a Protestant and attended Grace Brethren Church in Hagerstown. She retired from Howard's Art Supplies and Frames as a custom framer and manager after 38 years. Previously, she was employed by Fairchild Aircraft and M.P. Moller Inc. Mrs. Itnyre was a member of South Mountain Bowling League for 46 years, a member of AARP, a participant with the Potomac Fish and Game Club and a member of Williamsport Red Men Lodge 84. She is survived by her loving family, a daughter, Peggy Mongan and husband, George E., of Hagerstown; a son, Charles Ross Itnyre and wife, Marlene, of Falling Waters, W.Va.; sisters, Iona C. Hollander of Washington, D.C., and Evelyn L. Winebrenner of McHenry, Md.; a brother, Robert L. Cassidy of Mount Savage; and granddaughters, Jodi Ramsey, Dorinda Itnyre, Julie Harbaugh, Susan Mongan and Sandra Itnyre, all of Hagerstown, and Charity Lloyd and grandson, Matthew Pippin, of Falling Waters. She also is survived by nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 18, at noon at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastors Dean Pryor and Robert Dell officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. George F. Dieterich Jr.

George Fred Dieterich Jr., 89, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at Homewood of Williamsport.

Born Dec. 22, 1916, in Cearfoss, Md., he was the son of the late George Fred Dieterich Sr. and Katherine Lenore Schindel Dieterich. He was employed as a welder for 39 years with Fairchild Aircraft, and was a member of UAW Local 842 Retired Workers. He was a member for more than 60 years of Christ's Reformed Church in Hagerstown, serving as both an elder and an usher. He also was a member of the former Clever-Smith Sunday School Class. He was well-loved by his family and many friends. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Mae Bowman Dieterich, with whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage on Aug. 2, 2006. Also surviving are his daughter, Lois Dieterich Herchenrother and husband, Brian, of Hagerstown; his son, Ronald L. Dieterich and wife, Nancy, of The Woodlands, Texas; his sister, Mary Catherine Kitchen and brother, E. Odell Deiterich, both of Hagerstown; four grandchildren, Melissa C. Reed of Greencastle, Pa., Terry F. Cool Jr. of State Line, Pa., Lauren K. Dieterich of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Paul M. Dieterich of Houston, Texas; one great-grandson, Gavin C. Reed; and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by a sister, Helen J. Lawrence, a brother, Robert E. Dietrich and a grandson, Matthew F. Cool.

Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Christ's Reformed Church, 130 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Don R. Stevenson officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown. Gladys V. Boward

Gladys Virginia "Bea" Boward, 78, of Hagerstown, passed away Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 4, 1927, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Victor Daniel and Della Wolfe Mills. Mrs. Boward was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, and the Williamsport American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She had worked as a delivery person for the former Check In Pharmacy in Hagerstown. She is survived by one son, Guy L. "Pete" Boward III and wife, Linda Irene, of Hagerstown; two sisters, Edith Irene Beeler and Hilda M. Crilly; five brothers, William R. Mills, Elmer Mills, Edwin Mills, Lloyd A. Mills and Floyd Mills; two grandsons, Randall L. Boward and Gary W. Burger; and a special niece and family, Larry and Carolyn Dietrich, son, Gary and his daughter, Lauren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy L. Boward Jr.; two sisters, Jane Mills and Mary Martin; and eight brothers, Donald Mills, Harold Mills, Howard Mills, John Mills, Roger Mills, Daniel Mills, Raymond Mills and Harry Brewbaker.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Mike Henning officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 1020 Maryland Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

William K. Carbaugh

William "Ken" Kenneth Carbaugh, 85, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at his home.

He was born Sept. 14, 1920, in Hagerstown. He retired as masseur with the Jewish Community Center in Rockville, Md. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Willow Brook Seventh-day Adventist Church in Boonsboro. He was a member of Willow Brook Pathfinder Club and was a Catoctin Mountain Park Service equestrian volunteer. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris S. Carbaugh; twins, son Jack Carbaugh and daughter Sandra J. Wray, both of Hagerstown, and daughters Janet A. Chandler and Dawn E. Thompson, both of Hagerstown; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Jerome E. Carbaugh, and one sister, Christine Huntzberry.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Willow Brook Seventh-day Adventist Church, Boonsboro. Pastor Timothy Crosby will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Aetna Camp, 21905 Mount Aetna Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Scott C. Boward

Scott Carroll Boward, 44, of Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006.

Born April 20, 1962, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Wayne Carroll and Eva Nell Nelson Boward of Hagerstown. He attended North Hagerstown High School. He was employed by Mizell Music. He was of the Protestant faith. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Heidi R., Rebecca S. and Joy E. Boward of Hagerstown; two brothers, Timothy W. and Fred D. Boward of Hagerstown; three nieces; and three nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Kristi L. Boward.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Rest Haven Funeral Chapel.

Susan R. Gable

Susan Rowe Gable, of Hagerstown, Md., died, Aug. 28, 2006, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown after an eight-year battle with colon cancer.

Born Sept. 21, 1949, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Alma Rose Walker Rowe, father, Joseph Newcomer Rowe, and stepfather, Harry Edward Swartzbaugh of Hagerstown. Known primarily in the area as a professional pianist and theatrical accompanist, she also received her bachelor of fine arts from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1971 as a fashion illustration major. She worked as a freelance architectural illustrator and a theatrical set and costume designer in addition to her career as a private piano instructor and performer. Since 1994, she was a private piano instructor at Saint James School in Saint James, Md. She taught privately at Machen Music from 1987 until 1998 and for the Cumberland Valley School of Music in the early '90s. She was most recently known as personal accompanist to Corey Evan Rotz, of the Washington Opera in Washington, D.C. Together, Rotz and Gable presented a series of concerts and also produced "Keep the Music Playing, " a CD to benefit the renovation of the Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg, which is Rotz's hometown. As a theatrical accompanist, she played hundreds of productions for Tri-State area schools and community theater organizations since the early '70s. In 1971, she was co-founder of the area's first independent educational theatre company for young people with North Country Players, Company II Theatre Workshop and Henry's Dinner Theatre. In 1991, she co-founded Escapade Theatre Company with colleagues William Morris and Katherine Groh Fitzsimmons. Escapade gradually grew to become home to Tres School for the Arts, where she served as administrative director until her retirement, due to illness, in 1998. She is survived by daughter, Erin Elizabeth Smith, son-in-law, Thomas E. Smith II and grandson, Thomas E. Smith III of Smithsburg, Md.; son, Jeffrey Scott Fignar of Hagerstown, and grandsons, Sky Fignar of Whiteville, N.C.; Hayden Joseph Ruck of Waynesboro; Drake Fignar of Hagerstown; close friend and colleague, Corey Evan Rotz. Survivors also include mother-in-law, Deloris Gable of Short Gap, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Lisa Jamison of Hot Springs, Ark., and LeeAnn Gable of Atlanta, Ga.; brother-in-laws, Anthony Gable of Atlanta, and Arthur Jamison of Hot Springs; and aunts, Mildred Stambaugh of Phoenixville, Pa., and Martha Cerino of Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by husband, Brian Shawn Gable of Hagerstown in 2004, and first husband, Jay John Fignar of Portland, Maine.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of St. James School in Saint James, with Saint James Headmaster the Rev. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan officiating. Graveside services will be at the convenience of the family at Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint James School, Headmaster Discretionary Fund, 17641 College Road, Saint James, MD 21781 or to the American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Dora V. Harnish

Dora V. Harnish, 86, of Ravenwood Nursing Home, and formerly of 19103 Woodhaven Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006.

Born Oct. 31, 1919, in Chester County, Pa., she was married to Roy W. Harnish on June 20, 1942. The family moved to Hagerstown, Md., in 1958, where Dora became a fifth-grade teacher at Maugansville Elementary School for the next 20 years. She was a graduate of Millersville University and earned a master of education degree from Shippensburg University. A faithful member of the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, Dora was most recently an active participant in the New Horizon Seniors Group. Her hobbies included traveling, needlework, ceramics and bowling. She was a warm and friendly person who was deeply committed to her family and close friends. Dora was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Roy W. Harnish, who passed away June 30, 2002. She is survived by her three sons, R. Melvin Harnish of Hagers- town, Joseph E. Harnish of South Bend, Ind., and Merle D. Harnish of Greencastle, Pa.; their wives, Nola M. Harnish, Janet C. Harnish and Barbara J. Harnish; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, at the Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. There will be a private burial in Rest Haven cemetery on Saturday, Sept. 2. A memorial service will be held at the Rest Haven Funeral Chapel on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 2 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Ed Poling, pastor of the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 1500 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Charles E. Horn

Charles E. "Charlie" Horn, 91, of Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at Washington County Hospital.

Mr. Horn was born Oct. 9, 1914, in Hagerstown, and was the son of the late David C. and Emma (Staley) Horn. He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Hagerstown. He was a 1934 graduate of Hagerstown High School. Mr. Horn was self-employed as the owner of Horns Paint Shop and was a school bus owner/operator for the Washington County Board of Education. He was also a paint shop foreman at Fairchild Aircraft and known for his ability to refinish antique furniture. He is survived by his wife, Frances K. (Palmer) Horn, whom he married on New Year's Eve in 1940. He is also survived by his only child, a son, Donald H. Horn, and wife, Laura, of McDonough, Ga.; one grandson, Michael Horn of Wellington, Fla.; five granddaughters, Carolyn Noel of Atlanta, Ga., Donna Horn of Clearwater, Fla., Elizabeth Stevens of Atlanta, Melinda Fisher of Atlanta and Christina Hura of Atlanta; a great-granddaughter, Kathryn Carver of Atlanta; and a great-grandson, Chase Hura of Atlanta. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Nellie Horn, Frances Verovsky, Mabel Schildtknecht and Emma Barnhart; and five brothers, George, Ernest, Howard, James Sr. and Willy Horn.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel in Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison and Bishop Joseph Yeakle will officiate. Burial will follow in Rest Haven cemetery in Hagerstown. Friends and relatives will be received at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church, 108 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Elma M. Kretzer

Elma Mae "Sweetie" French Kretzer, 90, of Hagerstown, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 5, 1916, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Mary Sprecher French. She worked for many years as a floor supervisor with Hagerstown Shoe. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Harry W. Kretzer; one daughter, Donna J. Wells of Salt Lake City; one son, Brian Kretzer of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Loretta Hemphill; and one brother, Ervin French.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown. The Rev. Darrell Layman will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown. The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Virginia M. Gibney

Virginia Maye "Billie" Gluck Gibney, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, in Washington County Hospital after a three-month illness.

Born in Chambersburg in 1920, she would have been 86 on Monday, the 18th. Billie was the daughter of the late Paul Stickell and Mary (Rinedollar) Gluck, longtime residents of Indiana Avenue in Hagers-town. She was preceded in death by her sister, Pauline (Gluck) Healy. Survived by her three children, Sheila Hancock of Alameda, Calif., Sybil Sparrow (and spouse, Bill) of Richmond, Va., and Greg Gibney (and his spouse, Lois) of Hollymead Terrace in Hagerstown, she was the proud and devoted grandmother of eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. A 1938 graduate of Hagerstown High School, where she was a cheerleader, Billie was a lifelong active planner and participant in Class of '38 reunion activities. A skilled and lucky player, she enjoyed playing cards her entire life. She was a longtime member of Christ Reformed Church. During her last years, Billie lived on Bryan Place in Hagerstown's West End, but had been a longtime resident of Pangborn Boulevard, where she raised her children, and was for some time assistant manager of Oak Ridge Apartments in the South End.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the chapel. The Rev. Rebecca J.P. Hoover will officiate. Interment will follow in Spring Grove cemetery, Lemasters, Pa.
