HELEN BARBARA PETES

Helen Barbara Petes died Monday, May 31, 2010 after a brief illness. She was born on September 14, 1921 in New York City, to the late Susan and John Szalanczy and graduated from Queens College in New York. She was married on May 20, 1944 to her beloved husband, the late Joseph Petes. In 1946, she moved to Washington, DC and in 1956 moved to suburban Maryland where she lived for the rest of her life. After her last child left home, she worked for many years at the Naval Federal Credit Union in White Oak. She was devoted to her family and friends and will be remembered by everyone who knew her for her warmth, generosity, and sense of humor. She is survived by her three children (Tom and his wife Rosann, Ginger and her husband Ed, and Linda and Lefty), and four grandchildren (Melissa, Laura, Diana and Kristin). Her life will be celebrated at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD (Valet Parking) on Saturday, June 5 from 3 to 5 p.m. Her ashes will be buried with her husband at Arlington National cemetery on Friday, June 25 at 2 p.m. (Please assemble at the Administration Building by 1:30 p.m.) Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

ELVA JACQUELINE SIMON “Jackee” (Age 83)

Died peacefully at her home in Silver Spring, MD on Monday August 30, 2010. Mrs. Simon, a fifth generation Washingtonian and a graduate of Coolidge High School, co-operated the Meeting House Furniture Company with her father, Harry Leonard Edwards until joining her husband in the development of a District based beverage dispensing company, Sodibar Systems, in 1948, which continues to operate under the direction of two of their sons. Mrs. Simon is survived by her husband, Alvin Simon; her passing occurring on the eve of their 62nd anniversary of marriage; three sons, Brett Simon (Robin Battleman-Simon), Mark Simon (Nina M. Wilson) and Geary Simon (Summer Smith-Simon); seven grandchildren and one great grandchild and a beloved sister, Beverly June Edwards-Floyd of Fredericksburg, VA.
