December 7, 2000

James P. Bright of Chestertown, Maryland died Thursday, December 7th 2000 in Christiana Medical Center, Newark, DE of Heart Failure. He was 58 years old.

Mr. Bright was born in Baltimore, MD. Mr. Bright was a graduate of the University of Maryland. He retired form the Maryland State Police in 1992 after 25 years service at the rank of 1st Sgt. Mr. Bright was a member of the Chester Masonic Lodge #115 A.F. & A.M Chestertown, MD, the Chester River Yacht & Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of the Maryland Troopers Assoc. and was very proud of his career in the Maryland State Police. Mr. Bright enjoyed woodworking, skiing and traveling. He was a devoted family man.

Mr. Bright is survived by his wife of 40 years Gabriele W. Bright, His Mother and Stepfather Dora & Eugene Miller of Chestertown, MD; 2 daughters Susan B. Walls and her husband Blaine, Gretchen B. Coppage and her Husband Ben all of Chestertown, MD; 1 brother, William T. Bright of Chestertown, MD and 1 sister Cynthia M. Ireland also of Chestertown, MD and 5 grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 13th 2000 at 1:00 p.m. from the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, MD where friends and family may call 1 hour prior to service. Interment will be in Chester cemetery, Chestertown, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest contributions in his memory to the Shriners's Hospital for children C/O Almos Temple 1315 K. St., N.W. Washington, DC 20005.

Olive Grace Mumford, of Chestertown, Maryland died December 7th, 2000 at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 93 years of age.

Born in Newark, MD, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Grace May [Slack] Mumford. She spent her formative years on Maryland's Eastern Shore. She was a graduate of State University of New York where she received both her Bachelors of Science and her Masters Degree as a Library Supervision Specialist. Ms. Mumford taught school for a period of time and later she worked for the City Library of Baltimore for many years and later for the Howard County Library.

She lived in the Reisterstown, MD area for 25 years and in 1992 she moved to Chestertown, MD. Ms. Mumford enjoyed handcrafts, and was an avid lover of the outdoors. She combined travel with camping as she and her sister Shirley traveled expensively throughout the United States and Canada.

Her sister Shirley D. Mumford of Chestertown, MD, 2 nieces, Lynn Short of Towsend, MD, Janet Shepherd of Iowa, City Iowa, and a nephew, Steve Smith of Atlanta, GA, survive Ms. Mumford. Memorial Services and Interment will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions be made to 1st United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 227, Chestertown, MD 21620

December 5, 2000

Edmund George Muehleck of Chester died at his home on Tuesday, December 5, 2000. He was 79.

He was the husband of Mary Margaret Muehleck. A memorial Mass will be held on Friday, December 8, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, Chester. Family and friends may call at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Chester, on Thursday December 7, 2000 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

Michael Stephen Touhey of Easton, died Tuesday, December 5, 2000 at his home. He was 68.

Born September 27, 1932 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Walter and Anna Touhey. He served in the Strategic Air Command, United States Air Force, during the Korean War and later worked in the aviation field.

In addition to his wife, the former Sheila Jones, whom he married in 1988, Mr. Touhey is survived by five sons, Michael S. Touhey, Jr., Walter Touhey and Eugene Touhey all of Florida, Patrick Touhey of Long Island, New York and Basil Touhey of Easton, MD; a step-son, Stuart Gohl of Long Island, New York; a step-daughter, Susan Gohl of Jessup, MD; a sister, Vera Nelson of Florida; five granddaughters, Shannon Touhey, Jill Touhey, Lisa Touhey, Christine Touhey and Alyson Touhey; eight grandsons, Steven Touhey, Bryan Touhey, Jason Touhey, Justin Touhey, Michael Touhey, Nicholas Touhey, Matthew Touhey and James Touhey and two great-grandsons, Bryan Touhey and Timothy Touhey.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 8, 2000 at 11 AM at the Maryland Veterans cemetery Chapel, Hurlock. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Friday morning from 9 to 10 am.

December 04, 2000

Connie Lynn Cox, (who was married but kept her maiden name), of Grasonville died Thursday, December 7, 2000 at her home. She was 49.

Born on November 8, 1951, she was the daughter of the late M. Virginia Burkey and Frederick W. Cox. She graduated from Reading High School in 1969, and then went to the University of Delaware, where she graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in German. She then obtained her Masters degree in education from the University of Delaware in 1976.

She taught reading at Wesley College in Dover, DE and Northern Michigan University at Marquette, MI and at American University. She was then the dean of continuing education at Montgomery College in Montgomery County. Most recently, she was a Senior Policy Analyst at the Maryland Higher Education Commission in Annapolis, MD. Before becoming ill, she was working on her dissertation for her Ph.D. in Higher Education Policy. She was involved with the McLain Choral Society in Northern Virginia, and the Annapolis Choral in Annapolis. She was also a member of Kent Island United Methodist Church and the National Reading Association.

She is survived by her husband, Michael King, whom she married on July 1, 1995, and a sister, Sandra S. Cox of Highlands Ranch, CO. Services will be held at Kent Island United Methodist Church on Sunday, December 10, 2000 at 3:00 PM. Family and friends may call at the church from 2:00 till 3:00. Burial will be at Laureldale cemetery, Reading PA.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Avenue Queenstown, Maryland 21658 or the American Cancer Society of Queen Anne’s County P.O. Box 132 Queenstown, Maryland 21658.

Calvin F. “Doc” Murphy, 86 of Rock Hall, Maryland died on Monday, December 04, 2000 at Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital in Chestertown, Maryland.

Born in Spencerville, Maryland, he was the son of the late Arlington & Lydia E. “Lehman” Murphy. He spent all of his formative years in Spencerville, Silver Spring areas of Maryland. He married Margaret V. Lehman and together they raised a family of two. He loved working with wood and went into carpentry as a trade. He worked for Hawkins Builders for many years and retired in 1985. When he and his wife moved to Rock Hall, Maryland where he enjoyed the treasures of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Being very family orientated, he enjoyed being with his family. He particularly enjoyed his children and grandchildren. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing. An avid sports fan he was fond of watching all kinds of sporting events. A lover of nature, he enjoyed watching the geese, deer, birds and other various forms of wildlife. During the growing months of the year, he loved working in his garden raising all kinds of vegetables.

Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margaret Murphy of Rock Hall, MD, 2 daughters Barbara Ann Slone of Damascus, MD, and Deborah Anne Wetzel of Severn, MD, 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 6th at 1 PM from the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Rock Hall, Maryland. Friends and family may call at the funeral home 1 hour prior to services. Interment will be in Wesley cemetery, Rock Hall immediately following services.

December 3, 2000

Myrtle Frances Townsend Bramble of Elkridge, MD died on Sunday, December 3, 2000 at the Delaware Hospital for Chronically Ill in Smyrna, De.

Born on May 21, 1916 in Cliff City, Chestertown, she was the daughter of the late George and Addie Fithian Townsend. After graduating from high school she spent many years in nursing, she owned and operated her own restaurant and later when she moved to Delaware, she worked for 14 years in the Delaware School System.

Mrs. Bramble is survived by four sons, Nelson Bramble, Jr. of Seaford, DE, Ronnie Lee Ross of Patuctuck, CT, Victor B. Ross of Spring Hill, FL and Wendell V. Ross, Jr. of Elkridge, MD; a brother, Oliver Townsend of Rock Hall; two sisters, Vire Williams of Worton and Irene Bland of Chestertown; three grandsons and two granddaughters, four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown, MD on Thursday, December 7, 2000 at 2:00 where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Chester cemetery, Chestertown, MD.

December 1, 2000

Josephine B. Gardner of Chester, MD. died Friday December 1, 2000 at her home in Chester. Beloved husband of William E. Gardner and mother of Debbie, Bobby and Billy, Jr.

A funeral mass will be held 11AM Monday December 4, 2000 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. Family & friends may call on Sunday December 3, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. from 6PM to 8PM. Interment will be in Stevensville cemetery in Stevensville, MD.

January 31, 2001

John Brice of Centreville, MD died at his home on January 31, 2001. He was 69.

Born on July 31, 1931 in Kent County he was the son of the late Harry Tylden & Amanda Thomas Brice. Raised in Kent County, he was a 1949 graduate of Chestertown High School. After high school Mr. Brice was recruited and signed by the Washington Senators American League Baseball Club as a pitcher. On March 13, 1951 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the Korean War. Returning home in 1954 he rejoined the Senators organization until being injured and leaving baseball. He returned to Centreville and began working for C & P Telephone and retired after 30 years in 1985.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Brice was also very interested in youth athletics in Queen Anne’s County. He coached various little league and pony league teams for 20 years. During his retirement he worked at Draper Brothers in Centreville, MD. He married Emily Emory in 1960 and has three children, Marjorie Brice, Footie Brice & John Brice, Jr. and fiancée Jane Boyle. In 1985 he married Elizabeth Carter Draper.

In addition to his wife and children he is survived by; John W. & Tricia Draper, Brian B. Draper and Edward C. & Mary Draper; brothers, Joseph T. Brice, Charles S. Brice and Wade Brice; sisters, Betty Robinson, Peggy Wheatley, Lavinia Slagle and Barbara Collins and an aunt, Nora Thomas. The grandchildren are; Ellen, Ben, Sam, Tom, Jack and Elaine Draper. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Nina Foote and two brothers, Tylden Brice and Richard Brice.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 3, 2001 at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Centreville, MD. The family will receive relatives and friends at their home on 112 South Liberty Street, Centreville, MD on Friday, February 2, 2001 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Interment will be at Old St. Paul’s cemetery on Sandy Bottom Rd, Chestertown, MD.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Jeff Davis Post #18, c/o The Athletic Fund, 2619 Centreville Road, Centreville, MD 21617 or the VFW Post #7464, P.O. Box 175, Grasonville, MD 21638.

Pallbearers will be John A. Covert, E. Weldon Kelley, William E. Young, James D. Edwards, James Leager, Edward C. Draper, Brian B. Draper and John W. Draper.

A Funeral Liturgy for Peter Martin Howard, of Easton, will be celebrated at St. Michaels Catholic Chapel, St. Michaels, MD on Saturday, February 3rd at 10 AM. Mr. Howard died at his home on Wednesday, January 31, 2001. He was 39.

Born in Easton, November 9, 1961, he was the son of Luke V. Sr. and Ann Hubbard Howard of Royal Oak. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul School and graduated from St. Michaels High School in 1979. He attended St. Mary's College. Over the years, Martin worked in the restaurant trade, as a postal employee and a butcher in the Village Shoppe in St. Michaels. At the time of his death, he was employed at Heartfields in Easton.

A lifelong resident of Talbot County, he was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Easton. His special interests included art, volleyball, fishing and crabbing.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are three sisters, Annette Mitchell of St. Michaels, Diana H. Johnson of Royal Oak and Angela M. Pugh of Easton; two brothers, Luke V. Howard, Jr. and Joseph R. Howard, both of Easton and his maternal grandfather, Sherwood M. Hubbard of Easton. Burial will be private. Friends may call on Friday, February 2, from 7-9 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton. A Vigil for the Deceased will be held at 8:45 PM.

Memorial donations, in his memory, may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul School, 900 High St., Easton, MD 21601 or to a favorite charity.
