January 27, 2001

James R. Benford of Easton, MD died on Saturday, January 27, 2001 at Genesis Elder Care - The Pines. He was 87.

Born December 9, 1913, in Schenectady, NY, he was the son of the late Frank G. and Georgia Rattray Benford. He was the second oldest of four brothers all of whom went into different fields of engineering. Their father was one of the physicists in the early days at General Electric.

Mr. Benford graduated from the University of Rochester, in Rochester, NY in 1935 and went to work for the Bausch & Lomb Optical Company. He started as an optical engineer and retired as Director of Visual Instruments Research & Development in 1970. Among the projects he designed were the Cinemascope movie lenses, telescopes, periscopes, binoculars, microscopes and binocular microscopes. He received many patents while working there, and an additional one in retirement for a multi-speed transmission for bicycles for smoother shifting. Prior to his retirement he wrote the section on Microscopes for the Encyclopedia Britannica.

On August 5, 1939 he married the former Margaret Baily, who died last summer, just a couple weeks shy of their 61st anniversary. They lived in Irondequoit, NY, a suburb of Rochester, from 1944 until 1970, where they enjoyed sailing on Lake Ontario.In 1970, he took early retirement, and they sailed from Lake Ontario to St. Petersburg, Florida. They bought a house on the water there and kept their sailboat in their back yard for almost two decades, making many cruises to the Bahamas and the Keys. Much of this time he also had a part-time hobby business making scale model reproductions of antique furniture pieces. He also volunteered with an organization that rebuilt bicycles for a youth program in St. Petersburg. He was an active tennis player until his early 80's. In 1998 they moved to St. Michaels to live with their son and his family at a time in their lives when they realized that they could no longer fully care for themselves.

Mr. Benford is survived by a son, Jay Benford and his wife, Dona of Easton; one daughter, Jean Benford Jordan and her husband Ray of Fort Lauderdale, FL; two brothers, Harry Benford of Michigan and Robert Benford of New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Joshua Benford of Southampton, England and Elizabeth and Lorena Benford, both of Easton.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 2, 2001 at 3:00 PM at Talbot Bible Church, Easton, MD.

Ethel Louise Conant of Crumpton, Md. died on January 27, 2001 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. She was 79.

Born in Wilmington, De. on April 27, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Alice Oldham. She was the wife of the late Clarence Conant who predeceased her on October 16, 1996. Mrs. Conant was a homemaker and resided with her husband in Crumpton, Maryland. She was a member of the Millington V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Conant's life revolved around her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by 2 sons: Bob Garvine of Townsend, De. and Jack Garvine of Newark, De.; a daughter: Bunny M. Pearson of Newark, De.; and a sister: Elizabeth Hayden of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 31, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service (10:00-11:00). Interment will be in Crumpton cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her name to: Crumpton Ambulance Fund c/o Crumpton Vol. Fire Dept. P.O. Box 68 Crumpton, Md. 21628.

January 26, 2001

Mary Gaede Mowbray, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, died on January 26, 2001 in Magnolia Hall. She was 94 years old.

She was the daughter of the late Dr. Anton Henry Gaede and Margaret MacNeil Gaede and the widow of Andrew Milton Mowbray, all of Philadelphia. When Mrs. Mowbray's health failed in 1995, she moved to Chestertown, MD to be with her stepdaughter Elaine and Robert Naper.

An avid bridge player and member and former officer of the Women's Bridge League of Philadelphia, PA. Mrs. Mowbray played on the LuLu Temple Country Club duplicate bridge team for many years. As a golfer, she was credited with not one hole-in-one but three and was a member of the Philadelphia Golf Association's Hole-in-One Club. She was a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer for 17 years.

In addition to her stepdaughter, she is survived by her step-granddaughters Susan Knight Caswell of Germantown and Barbara Knight of Sliver Spring, MD and her nephews Anton Henry Gaede 3rd and Thomas McKay Gaede and their families of Alabama.

A memorial service and interment will be held in Philadelphia, PA at a later date.

Alfred Henry Wooters Sr. of Easton, MD. died at the Maryland Veterans Healthcare center, Perry Point, MD. on Friday January 26, 2001. He was 75.

Born in Cordova, MD. on September 30, 1925 he was the son of the late Clarence W. and Anita Eberhard Wooters. He attended public School in Talbot County and in 1946 joined the U.S. Army. Following his release from active duty in 1947 he continued to serve with the Maryland National Guard of Easton until 1963.

In 1947 married the former Barbara Blann of Oxford and they made their home in various places in Talbot County. From the early 1950's until 1970 he worked at the Oxford Boat Yard as a boat builder- carpenter and then worked as a self employed carpenter until retiring in the mid 1990's.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Mr. Wooters is survived by three daughters; Laura Bishop of Queenstown, Joanna Harrison of Trappe, Sherrie Etchenbarren of Riverside CA. two sons; Carl L. Wooters of Easton and Alfred H. Wooters Jr. of Easton. six sisters; Gladys Stewart of Denton, Naomi LaBombard and Muriel Williams both of Cordova, Eleanor Plagge of St. Michaels, Patricia Baker of Greenwood De., and Hazel Natale of Vero Beach FL. 20 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Another sister Anita Bartholomy is deceased.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 31, 2001 at 1:00pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home P.A., Easton, where friends may call from noon until1:00PM. Burial will be at the Maryland Veterans cemetery- Eastern Shore, Hurlock, MD.

January 25, 2001

Mary Antoinette Lilly of Easton died on Thursday, January 25, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital in Easton. She was 64.

Born in Baltimore on June 28, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Sophie Goldy Clark. In 1953, she married Clyde D. Lilly and they made their home in the Dundalk area. She moved to Baltimore where she lived for over twenty years until moving to Bethlehem in 1975.

In 1999, she moved to Easton to live with her daughter. She enjoyed the outdoors especially fishing and gardening. Her greatest joy was her family.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by five daughters, Mary Walls of Edgemere, Luckie Elkhayat of Seaford, DE, Lena Hessey of Denton, Tina Wilson, and Hope Mollino, both of Easton; 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Saturday, January 27, 2001 at 2:30 PM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 3-5 and 7-9 PM and on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Jr. Order cemetery, Preston.

January 24, 2001

Allan Washington "Buckie" Price of Rock Hall, Maryland died on January 24, 2001 at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 92.

Born on September 11, 1908, he was the son of the late Frank C. and Nora M. Price and husband of 63 years to the late Eva Jacob Price. Mr. Price was employed many years as an electrician until his retirement in 1978.

He was a member of Rock Hall United Methodist Church , where he served in several church groups. He was also a member of Chester Lodge #115 in Chestertown, Md. Mr. Price was active in Rock Hall Lions Club for a number of years and served as King Lion from 1972 until 1973. His hobbies were boating and music.

He is survived by 2 sons: Allan F. Price of Silver Spring, Md. and Donald L. Price Sr. of Rock Hall, Md.; 2 grandchildren: Michelle Hardin of Rock Hall, Md. and Donald L. Price, Jr. of Worton, Md. along with 6 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday January 27, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Route #20 Rock Hall, Md. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday January 26, 2001 between the hours of 6:00-8:00. There will be a Masonic service at 8:00 pm. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel cemetery, Rock Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company, Ambulance Fund P.O. Box 577 Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

January 24, 2001

Eleanor Marietta Johnson Tobie, a former Research Parasitologist at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. died on Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at Heron Point in Chestertown, Md. She was 92.

Born November 11, 1908 in Latimer, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Marie Schonemann Johnson. Mrs. Tobie received a B.A. degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1930. From 1931 until 1942, Mrs. Tobie taught biology and physical education first in Iowa schools and, later (1937-1942) in Fort Morgan, Colorado. In 1942 she received a M.S. degree in Economic Zoology from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) in Ames, Iowa. Mrs. Tobie joined the National Institutes of Health in 1943, as a junior zoologist in the Division of Zoology.

In 1946 she assumed the position of Parasitologist, in the Division of Tropical Diseases and Laboratory of Tropical Diseases, where she worked until 1961. In that year she was transferred to the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, where she held the position of Research Parasitologist until her retirement in 1969. During those years her major research interests were parasite physiology, the development of media for cultivating the parasites known as haemoflagellates, the life cycles and biology of haemoflagellates, and the action of antibiotics on trypanosomes, a group of parasites that includes the one responsible for African sleeping sickness.

She was a member of several scientific societies, including the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, of which she was an emeritus member at the time of her death.

Mrs. Tobie and her husband, Dr. John E. Tobie, whom she married in 1947, made their home in Bethesda until 1991, when they moved to Chestertown, Md. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chestertown. Dr. Tobie predeceased his wife in 2000. Mrs. Tobie is survived by 2 sisters and 10 nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday February 1, 2001 at Wesley Hall, Heron Point. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Heron Point 501 E. Campus Drive, Chestertown, Md. 21620.

Patrick F. Whalen, beloved infant son of Kent and Donna Whalen, brother of Molly Whalen died January 24, 2001 at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Memorial services will be held 11AM Saturday, January 27, 2001 at the Living Water Lutheran Church, Stevensville, MD.

January 23, 2001

Charles W. Reynolds, Sr. of Worton, Md. died on January 23, 2001at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. He was 76.

Born on March 2, 1924 in Somerset County Maryland, he was the son of the late James Walter and Mattie Hatten Muterstaw Reynolds. In his adolescent years Mr. Reynolds worked on the family farm and later developed an interest in automobiles. He married Sylvia Edith Higgins on February 9, 1946. Mr. Reynolds worked as an automobile mechanic for many area businesses including: Osmond's Pontiac, Coopers, and Genos; from which he retired in 1986.

Mr. Reynolds, during his career as a automobile mechanic, participated in erecting Kent County High School. He was known for helping neighbors and friends on their vehicles and with their lawn care. He enjoyed playing cards and fishing. In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by 5 sons: Charles W. Reynolds, Jr. of Kennedyville, Md., James R. Reynolds Sr. of Sassafras, Md., David Michael Reynolds of Wilmington, De., Richard Bruce Reynolds of Millington, Md., and Randy Lee Reynolds, Sr. of Kennedyville, Md.; 2 daughters: Jo Ann Baker of Norfolk, Va. and Barbara Jean Miller of Chestertown, Md.; 2 sisters: Elma Currie of Deltona, Florida and Ruth Brittingham of Westover, Md.; one brother: Donald Reynolds of Starr, Md.; along with 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 27, 2001 at 12:00 (noon) at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service (11:00-12:00). Interment will be in Chester cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation 611 Executive Blvd. Suite 1010 Rockville, Md. 20852.
