January 22, 2001

Norman Mott Shannahan, Jr. of St. Michaels, died at The Memorial Hospital at Easton on Monday, January 22, 2001. He was 88.

Born in St. Michaels, June 15, 1912, he was the son of the late Norman M., Sr. and Ethel Valliant Shannahan. After graduating from St. Michaels High School, he attended the Johns Hopkins University He then returned home where he joined the family artesian well business. During World War 11, he lived in Baltimore where he worked with Bethlehem Steel Company as a representative of the Shannahan Artesian Well Co, Inc. in drilling all the wells for the steel company.

Following the war, he returned to the company office in St. Michaels where he served as President of the company from 1952 until retiring in 1975. A resident of St. Michaels for the majority of his life, he was a member of Christ Church, St. Michaels and a former Vestryman of the church, a member of Granite Lodge #177, A. F. & A. M. and the Miles River Yacht Club. He was also a former Director of the St. Michaels Bank and a former member of the St. Michaels Rotary Club.

Mr. Shannahan is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Marion T. Ferguson whom he married at Christ Church in St. Michaels on April 9, 1938; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Shannon Wyant of Brecksville, Ohio; two sons and their wives, Norman M. Shannahan, III and his wife, Thelma and John T. Shannahan and his wife, Faye, all of St. Michaels; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Jane Shannahan and Ida S. Caulk and one brother, Samuel V. Shannahan, are deceased.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, January 25th, at 11:30 A.M. at Christ Church, St. Michaels. Inurnment will be at the Christ Church Columbarium.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Michaels Community Center, P. O. Box 354, St. Michaels, MD 21663 or to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

A funeral liturgy for John Arthur Wood, a retired public school educator, of Easton will be celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Easton on Friday, January 26, 2001 at 10:00 AM. Mr. Wood died on Monday, January 22, 2001 at Memorial Hospital, Easton. He was 92.

Born on May 30, 1908 in Easton, he was the son of the late William T. and Ida V. Leonard Wood. After graduating from Easton High School, he attended Maryland State Normal School, now known as Towson State University. He graduated in 1929. Later he received a BS degree in Education at Washington College and also did graduate work at the University of North Carolina and the University of Delaware.

During his teaching career he spent forty years in the Elementary schools of Talbot County, beginning in a one-room school at Matthewstown. For thirty-five years he was the Principal at elementary schools in St. Michaels, Easton, Idlewild, Cordova and Trappe. While at the Idlewild School in Easton he initiated one of the first programs for children with special needs in Maryland. He also pioneered the first program of general science in the county and wrote the course of study for it. He organized the first public school band in Talbot County at Idlewild Elementary in the 1950's.

A lifelong resident of Talbot County, he was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. His wife, the former Alice Hanks Webster, whom he married on November 2, 1929, died May 30, 1971. Mr. Wood is survived by three children, Joan Woodward of Cambridge, MD, Phyllis McCoy of Venetia, PA and John Wood, Jr. of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was predeceased by one grandchild, Sheila A. McCoy.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Thursday, January 25, 2001 from 7-9:00 PM, where a vigil for the deceased will be held at 8:30 PM. Burial will be at Oxford cemetery, Oxford, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul High School, High St., Easton, MD 21601.

January 21, 2001

June G. Glasgow of Stevensville, MD. died on January 21, 2001 at Arundel General Hospital in Annapolis, MD, she was 85 years of age.

Born in Charlotte, N.C. she was the daughter of the late Nicholas H. and Natalie [Tisi] Gill. She was a graduate of Central High School with the class of 1933. She attended Strayers School for Secretaries in Washington, D.C. On September 27, 1935 she married Francis L. Glasgow of Washington, D.C. During her working career she was an Administrative Officer for the Bureau of Power under the Federal Power Commission. She retired in 1975

Mrs. Glasgow had membership the Kent Island United Methodist Church, the Island Idlers, American Association of Retired People and the National Association of Retired Employees as well as being a member of the Kent Island Senior Center.

Preceded in death by her husband Francis Louis Glasgow, Sr who died in 1994 She is survived by her daughter June Ann Vaughn of Williamsburg, VA. a son F. Louis Glasgow, Jr., of Chester, MD, 4 brothers, Joseph Gill of Charlotte, N.C., Herbert Gill of Mint Hill, N.C., Howard Gill of Rock Hill, S.C., and William R. Gill of Charlotte, N.C. 6 Grandchildren, Michael Louis Glasgow and Nancy Elaine Harrison both of Chester, MD, David Craig Glasgow of Winston Salem, NC, Laura E. Peregoy of Queenstown, MD, Stacy Jean Curtis of Richmond, VA, Christine Ann Estes of Williamsburg, VA, 8 great Grandchildren Eric and Stephanie Glasgow of Winston Salem, NC, Dillon and Luke Glasgow of Chester, MD, Joseph and Shannon Peregoy of Queenstown, MD, Ryan Harrison of Chester, MD and Jack Estep, Jr., of Williamsburg, VA.

Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, January 25th at 11 A.M. form the Kent Island United Methodist Church, Kent Island, MD. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Kathryn Ford Kaufman of Betterton, Md. died on Sunday January 21, 2001 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville, Md. She was 84.

Born in Still Pond, Md. on October 17, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Wallace Herman and Helen Hackett Ford. Mrs. Kaufman was a 1933 graduate of Chestertown High School. Following her graduation she worked for many area businesses including: The Chestertown Defense Plant, Vita Foods, and C and P Telephone where she worked as an operator.

Mrs. Kaufman was the wife of the late William R. Kaufman whom she married in 1961. Together they owned and operated Kaufman's Restaurant in Betterton. She retired in 1980, and in 1986 her husband predeceased her. Mrs. Kaufman was a member of Kent County Senior Citizens (where she was very active), the Golden Age Club in Betterton, where she was President, and Shrewsbury Episcopal Church in Kennedyville, Md. She was also appointed by the County Commissioners to serve on the Commission on Aging for Kent County. Mrs. Kaufman enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, knitting, and painting.

She is survived by 4 sons: Allan Moore of Betterton, Md., Richard Kaufman of Kennedyville, Md., James Kaufman of Smyrna, De., and Wayne Kaufman of Betterton, Md.; 2 daughters: Carolyn Walls of Denton, Md. and Louise Cahall of Cordova, Md. along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday January 26, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service (10-11). Interment will be in Still Pond cemetery. Those serving as pallbearers are: J.W. Cahall, Jason Cahall, Kevin Kaufman, Richard Kaufman, Norman "Toppy" Hopkins, and Jeff Moore.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Shrewsbury Episcopal Church P.O. Box 187 Kennedyville, Md. 21645 or Kent County Senior Citizens 118 N. Cross Street Chestertown, Md. 21620.

January 19, 2001

Kathleen Alverta Patchett of Easton died at her home on January 19, 2001. She was 79.

Born in Crapo, MD on July 10, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Mildred Foxwell Kirwan. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1939. In 1940, she married Edward I. Patchett, Jr. and they made their home in Easton where she began working at the Idlewild Middle School as the cafeteria manager.

In 1986, she retired after 18 years of service. For several years, she was also the Welcome Wagon Hostess for the town of Easton. Mrs. Patchett was a member of the St. Mark's United Methodist Church where she was on the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Ladies of the Elks, Lodge #1622, Easton where she was head of the membership committee.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Crankshaw of Preston; a son, Edward Patchett III of Ocean City; three brothers, Phillip Kirwan of Trappe, Franklin Kirwan, and Russell Kirwan, both of Easton; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 7-9:00 PM. Burial will be in Jr. Order cemetery, Preston.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

Nancy Kresge Usilton of Chestertown, Md. died at her home Friday January 19, 2001. She was 73.

Mrs. Usilton was born in Stroudsburg, Pa., August 20, 1927. She married Herbert L. Usilton Sr., December 7, 1957. They lived together in Doylestown, Pa., and Killington Vermont before retiring to Chestertown, Md.

Nancy Usilton was a loving mother and wife of 43 years. She enjoyed many crafts especially quilting. Nancy K. Usilton is survived by her husband Herbert L. Usilton Sr. of Chestertown, Md., two sons, Herbert L. Usilton Jr. and wife Lisa of Woodstock, Vt. and Grover K. Usilton and wife Ellen of Cornwall, Vt., two sisters, Sarabel K. Ryan of Emmaus, Pa., and Patricia K. Buck of Chestnut Hill, Pa., and 5 grandchildren, Lawrence and Patrick Stack, Haley L. Usilton, Samuel G. Usilton, and Grace K. Usilton.

Memorial Services will be held Wednesday January 24, 2001 at the St. John's Catholic Church in Rock Hall, Md. at 11 am.

January 18, 2001

Beloved husband & pop pop Stephen “Murph” De Cubellis of Centreville died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Thursday, January 18, 2001. He was 83.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 11, 1917, he was the son of the late Antonio and Andelina Perotti DeCubellis. He attended George West Junior High School and the Blessed Sacrament where he played baseball. In 1939 he was signed by the Boston Red Sox for their Farm League and assigned to Centreville, MD. and played in the Eastern Shore Baseball League. In 1941 he was sold to the Baltimore Orioles.

On October 11, 1942 he married the former Helen Benton. Mr. DeCubellis then served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. On the Island of Saipan he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. Returning home to play with the Baltimore Orioles but, was unable to fulfill his major league contract due to his war injuries.

Residing in Centreville he began working with the Centreville Town Utilities and later worked for the Centreville Postal Office and, retired after 30 years. He is a member of the Survivors Club 4th Division, U.S. Marines, The Methodist Men, The American Legion Jeff Davis Post in Centreville, The Centreville Town Council, was a volunteer for the Centreville Ambulance and ran the Centreville Little League.

In addition to his wife, Mr. DeCubellis is survived by a son, Stephen DeCubellis of Lakeland, FL; a daughter, Helen Derwin of Eldersburg, MD; two sisters, Mary Gormley and Margaret Kirkwood. 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at 12:00 at the Centreville United Methodist Church, Centreville. Memorial donations may be made to the Goodwill Fire Company, c/o Ambulance Fund 212 Broadway Centreville, MD. 21617

Paul Fogle Mickey, Sr., 86, a longtime Washington lawyer, died at his home in Easton on January 18, 2001 from complications related to Parkinson’s Disease. Born on September 3, 1914 in Winston-Salem, NC, he was the son of the late Edward T. and Ada Fogle Mickey.

He received both his AB and LLB from the University of North Carolina. From 1937 to 1939, he worked as Assistant to the Attorney General of North Carolina. He came to Washington in 1939 and spent seven years as a Special Attorney with the Tax Division in the Department of Justice, interrupted in 1945 by service in the Office of Military Government in Berlin. He joined Steptoe & Johnson in 1947 and worked there for 31 years until his retirement in 1978. He served several years as the firm’s Managing Partner and specialized in tax, administrative, and international trade law, and worked during the latter part of his career on cases involving the American watch industry, the building of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and the importation of foreign steel.

Mr. Mickey was a member of the Metropolitan Club and the Chevy Chase Club, where he served as Vice-President of the Board. In Easton, he was a member of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club, the Talbot Country Club, and served on the board of the Historical Society of Talbot County. Mr. Mickey and his wife of 57 years, the former Margaret Stanley, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating, and lived for two years in the Outer Banks of North Carolina before moving to Easton, MD to live on the Tred Avon River.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Margo King-Steiner of Boulder, CO, Paul F. Mickey, Jr. of Washington, D.C., and Frank T. Mickey of Bethesda, MD; a brother, Joseph H. Mickey of Winston-Salem, NC; a sister, Mary Louise Simon of New York City, NY; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at Christ Church, 111 South Harrison Street, Easton, MD on Saturday, January 27, 2001 at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Church General Memorial Fund, or the YMCA of Talbot County, 202 Peachblossom Road, Easton, MD 21601.
