Mr. David Smith
Dated: Tuesday, June 11, 2002.
Mr. David Lee Smith, 51, of Front Royal, Va., died Saturday, June 1, at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.

Born Feb. 19, 1951, in Front Royal, he was a son of Archie Smith of Alabama, and the late Marjorie Marie Cooper Smith.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam and a lifelong truck driver.

Surviving in addition to his father are one daughter, Marjorie Marie Smith Midkiff and husband Brian of Front Royal; three grandchildren, Jacob Lee Smith, Alyssa Marie Midkiff and John Wesley Midkiff, all of Front Royal; one brother, Victor Lee Vermillion and wife Andrea Catherine of Brunswick; three nephews, Caleb James Vermillion, Gabriel Lee Vermillion and Kyle Alan Bogard, all of Brunswick; one niece, Jamee Catherine Harkins of Brunswick; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He will also be remembered by many friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Marie Smith.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 5, at Cool Springs Church of God, Browntown, Va.

Interment was in the Updike family cemetery in Browntown. Bearers were Ronnie Bell, Jess Bell, Ronnie Clegg, Wilbur Jones, Wes Bell and R.J. Cooper.

Honorary bearers were Chip Cooper and Billy Cooper.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cool Springs Church of God, 3705 Gooney Manor Loop, Browntown, Va. 22610.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.

Mrs. Patricia Miller
Dated: Tuesday, June 11, 2002.
Mrs. Patricia Hope Miller, 55, of Sioux Falls, S.D., died Sunday, June 9, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

She was the wife of H. James Miller.

Born June 26, 1946, in Stickney, S.D., she was the daughter of Gerrit Wolbrink and Agnes Nydam Wolbrink.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker.

Surviving in addition to her husband is one daughter, Melissa Walker of Frederick.

A memorial service will be held in Aurora Center, S.D., at a later date.

Interment will be in Aurora Reformed Church cemetery, Aurora Center.

Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Patricia H. Miller Fund, 2809 West Delrich Dr., Sioux Falls, S.D. 57107.

Mrs. Pansy Grossnickle
Dated: Wednesday, June 12, 2002.
Mrs. Pansy Detta Grossnickle, 86, of Middletown, died Tuesday, June 11, at Vindobona Nursing Home, Braddock Heights.

She was the wife of the late Chauncey M. Grossnickle, who died in 1992.

Born June 15, 1915, in Cherry Run, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late John and Viola Hummelsine Butts.

She was a member of Middletown United Methodist Church and the Middletown Volunteer Fire Co. Auxiliary.

She is survived by one son, Harold M. Grossnickle of Smithsburg; four grandchildren, Keith Grossnickle and wife Cheryl of Waynesboro, Pa., Crystal Ancarrow and husband Greg of Smithsburg, Kathy Keeney and husband Tim of Clear Spring, and Kimberly Lancaster and husband Joe of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight great-grandchildren, Scott and Matthew Ancarrow, Andria and Ashleigh Grossnickle, Sharaya Mobley, Heather Faulders and Brien and Daniel Lancaster; and three great-great grandchildren, Noah Grossnickle, Emelia Burke and Jonathan Mobley.

She was preceded in death by one son, Donald R. Grossnickle in 1996; her daughter-in-law, Shirley Funk Grossnickle in 2002; her sister, Margaret Oakes; and her brother, Sanford Butts.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Susan Halse will officiate.

Interment will be in Mount Zion United Methodist cemetery, Myersville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Middletown United Methodist Church, 7108 Fern Circle, Middletown, Md. 21769; or to Middletown Volunteer Fire Co. or Middletown Volunteer Fire Co. Ambulance Fund, Middletown, Md. 21769.

Mrs. Gladys Shumaker
Dated: Wednesday, June 12, 2002.
Mrs. Gladys Mae Shumaker, 94, of Sandy Hook, died Monday, June 10, at Vindobona Nursing Home, Braddock Heights.

She was the wife of the late C. Garland Shumaker.

Born July 31, 1907, in Sandy Hook, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Harrison and Ethel Culler Harrison.

She was a member of Sandy Hook United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Frances Shumaker of Alexandria, Va., and Mae West of Frederick; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Kendall Harrison.

The family will receive friends at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va., on Thursday, June 13, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 14, at 11 a.m. at Sandy Hook United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James K. Hamrick officiating.

Interment will be in Ebenezer cemetery, Loudoun Heights, Va.

Mrs. G. Melvina Stabler
Dated: Wednesday, June 12, 2002.
Mrs. G. Melvina Stabler, 76, of Inwood, W.Va., died Friday, June 7, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

She was the wife of Hugh V. Stabler.

Born Nov. 30, 1925, in Burdette, Kan., she was the daughter of the late Karl and Ruth Moore Sidebottom.

She was retired from the Howard County Board of Education.

She was a member of the Hopewell Friends Meeting in Clearbrook, Va., and Sandy Spring Meeting of Maryland.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Piece Makers Quilt Guild, Extension Homemakers Club, and founder of Heritage Crafts of the Eastern Panhandle.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, David Stabler of Woodbine, and Gordon Stabler and wife Andrea of Frederick; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and two sisters, Norma Jean Conn of Denver, Colo., and Dottie George of Royal Gorge, Colo.

She will also be remembered by her friend, Kathy Stabler of Frederick.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Services and interment will be private.

Family suggests memorial contributions be made to Heritage Crafts of the Eastern Panhandle, P.O. Box 1225, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25402.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Mr. William Bolyard
Dated: Wednesday, June 12, 2002.
Mr. William Richard "Dick" Bolyard, 72, of Bolivar, W.Va., died Saturday, June 8, at his niece's home.

He was the husband of Geraldine Wyonna Ridenour Bolyard.

Born Dec. 26, 1929, in Marquess, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ervin Hobart and Ruth Knotts Bolyard.

He was a Methodist.

He had retired from Alpha Portland Cement Co. and Essroc, as an equipment operator.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Barry Bolyard of Harper's Ferry, W.Va., and Gene Bolyard; and one brother, Donald L. Bolyard of Keyser, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Hoy H. Bolyard; and one sister, Avis Helen Owens.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va.

The family requests contributions be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401; or the American Cancer Society, Mid-Atlantic Division Inc., Berkeley Unit, P.O. Box 873, Charles Town, W.Va. 25323-8073.

Mr. Edward Campbell
Dated: Thursday, June 13, 2002.
Mr. Edward I. Campbell, 64, of Frederick, died Monday, June 10, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born on July 6, 1937, in Newburg, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret White Campbell of Plattekill, N.Y.

Mr. Campbell was the director of the Learning Resource Center at Frederick Community College from 1980-93 and was involved with their arts and theater department. Prior to 1980, he worked in those same two departments at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Mr. Campbell was also an attorney and a judge and was a member of the Judicial Administration Division of the American Bar Association.

He was active with the Fredericktowne Players and was a theater critic for both local and Washington, D.C. newspapers.

An avid reader, he wrote several books including "Outrage in Annapolis."

Mr. Campbell was also very musical Ñ he composed the music for Fredericktowne Centennial as well as the Washington Redskins song, "Hurray for the Redskins at RFK."

A long-time advocate for the homeless, he helped out at the Beacon House homeless shelter as well as area soup kitchens. He was also a volunteer at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He had attended St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Frederick.

Surviving are five brothers and sisters, Marilyn Veronica Nieto and Frederick Campbell, both of Plattekill, Carolyn Martinez of Ontario, Canada, Marcella Rose Cahill of Kingston, N.Y., and Robert Campbell of Landstuhl, Germany; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Farnum and Lucy Candelario; and one brother, Sam Campbell.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick .

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beacon House, 419 W. South St., Frederick, Md. 21701.

Mr. William Newkirk
Dated: Thursday, June 13, 2002.
Mr. William David Newkirk, 80, of 7045 Basswood Road, Frederick, died Tuesday, June 11, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home, Frederick.

He was the husband of Mary Fitzgerald Newkirk.

Born May 16, 1922, in Nashville, Tenn., he was a son of the late Ira Henry and Mary Katherine Skeen Newkirk.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the Navy with 20 years of service. From 1962 to 1978, Mr. Newkirk worked for the Naval Surface Weapons Center.

Mr. Newkirk was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick. Formerly, he was involved as a volunteer with the Crestwood Village Association.

He enjoyed playing cards, painting and photography. His true passion was traveling.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, William David Newkirk Jr. of Derwood; four daughters, Julia Anne Lewis and husband Paul of Livermore, Calif., Geraldine Elizabeth Jansen and husband Richard of Fenwick Island, Del., Mary Katherine Martinez and husband Richard of Folly Beach, S.C., and Annie Elizabeth Carroll and husband Ed of Asheboro, N.C.; one brother, Earl W. Newkirk of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Beatrice Jackson of Yards, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, on Thursday, June 13, from 2 to 9 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Christian wake service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 2 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at his church, St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, East Second Street, Frederick, at 10 a.m. Friday, June 14.. The Rev. Robert J. Jaskot will celebrate.

Interment will be in Arlington National cemetery at a later date.
